MP sits at the geographic centre of the country, covers 308,252 square kilometres, holds roughly 85 million people, and rarely shows up on first-time India itineraries. That is why I wanted to go. The crowds are thinner, the food is excellent, the temples are older than most European cathedrals, and the tigers are real. Flagship sights split into three clusters. In the north: Khajuraho, where 22 of the original 85 Chandela temples (950 to 1050 AD) survive intact; Orchha, a 16th century Bundelkhand capital with riverside cenotaphs; and Gwalior, anchored by Man Singh Palace and the Sas-Bahu temples.
