The Palais des Papes in Avignon is UNESCO listed (1995), seat of the Avignon Papacy from 1309 to 1377. Pont du Gard, a 1st century Roman aqueduct, is UNESCO listed (1985) and measures 49 metres high by 275 metres long. The Roman and Romanesque monuments of Arles received UNESCO status in 1981. The Verdon Gorge runs 25 kilometres long and drops 700 metres deep, which is why people call it the Grand Canyon of Europe. Best window: May to June, then September to October.
