For 2026 my recommended route is Mexico City for five nights, then a flight or Tren Maya ride east to Mérida, Chichén Itzá, Valladolid and Tulum, and finally Oaxaca for mezcal, Monte Albán and the Día de Muertos rituals that UNESCO inscribed on its Intangible Heritage list in 2008. If you have two weeks I add Palenque and San Cristóbal de las Casas in Chiapas, or swing west to Puerto Escondido on the Pacific.
