Dakar is louder, kinder and more architecturally layered than I imagined. Gorée Island, fourteen kilometres offshore, is one of the most emotionally heavy places I have ever visited. Saint-Louis is faded French colonial elegance on a river island, Lac Rose still turns rose-pink in dry-season sun, and Sine-Saloum's mangrove channels feel like a soft secret. Add Touba's mosque, Niokolo-Koba's wildlife, Lompoul's pocket Sahara and Joal-Fadiouth's shell island and you have more depth than one trip can drain.
