Plus plus plus fly if you've got 3-5 days for Cairns and the Reef alone. Drive if you've got 7-10+ days and you actually want to see the Whitsundays, Hervey Bay, Bundaberg's sea turtles, and the long stretch of Queensland coast in between. I've made the Brisbane-Cairns drive once with proper stops, and I've flown the route three more times since. Both are valid. Neither is universally "better." I'd only recommend the drive with 7+ days to spare, and even then with a caveat I'll get to. TL;DR: Fly for a 3-5 day Cairns-only trip (AUD 120-380 RT advance). Drive for a 7-14 day East Coast road trip with proper stops. Take the Spirit of Queensland train for atmosphere, not speed (24+ hours). Greyhound is the cheap-and-painful option.
