The honest answer is that there isn't one. So so so so the Top End and Red Centre demand May-September; Tasmania and the southern coasts demand October-April; and southern bushfire risk peaks December-February in ways that should change your plans. But pick the season by the region, not the other way around. TL;DR: Top End / Red Centre best Jun-Aug (cool nights, dry tracks, no cyclones). Tasmania and southern coasts best Nov-Mar (long days, swimmable beaches, alpine access). NSW / VIC viable year-round with caveats around bushfire and crowds.
