Anguilla, Saint Martin & Saint Barthélemy: My Complete Caribbean Twin Islands & Luxury Heritage Guide for 2026
I spent three weeks island hopping across this triangle of the northeastern Caribbean. Anguilla is a flat, quiet British Overseas Territory with 33 of the calmest beaches I have ever walked. Saint Martin and Sint Maarten share a single 87 square kilometre island, half French and half Dutch, joined by the oldest peaceful international border in the world, signed in 1648. And Saint Barthélemy, just a 10 minute flight from Princess Juliana, is a 21 square kilometre French overseas collectivity where yachts the size of village schools park outside Gustavia harbour each Christmas.
This is my full 2026 guide. If you are reading from India, the good news is that all three territories let Indian passport holders in visa free for short stays.

1. Why Visit in 2026
The answer for 2026 is unusually clear.
First, paperwork is friendlier than ever. Indian passport holders get 30 days visa free on arrival in Anguilla, 30 days in Saint Martin and Sint Maarten, and 30 days under Schengen overseas collectivity rules in Saint Barthélemy. The only new requirement is the UK ETA for Anguilla, mandatory since 8 January 2025 at about £10 online.
Second, the islands have finished the rebuild after Hurricane Irma, which struck on 6 September 2017 as a Category 5 storm. Anguilla lost roughly 90 percent of built structures, Princess Juliana International Airport was wrecked, and Saint Barthélemy reported about 25 percent damage. By late 2023, every major hotel and the SXM terminal had reopened.
Third, the Treaty of Concordia, signed 23 March 1648 between France and the Netherlands, turns 378 years old in 2026. It remains the oldest peaceful international border in the world.
Fourth, the dollar is strong against the Eastern Caribbean Dollar and reasonable against the Euro, making Saint Barts day trips accessible if you self cater.
2. Background and Heritage
Long before Europeans arrived, the Arawak and then the Carib peoples lived across the northern Leewards. Christopher Columbus sighted Anguilla in 1493, and the British settled it in 1650 from Saint Kitts. Anguilla was administered with Saint Kitts and Nevis for centuries, with the Federation formalised after 1882. In 1967 the Anguillan Revolution saw islanders push out the Saint Kitts police force. Full separation came in 1980, and the British Overseas Territory of Anguilla has been autonomous since, with The Valley as its capital and a population of about 13,500.
Saint Martin was sighted by Columbus in 1493 and named after Saint Martin of Tours. By the early 1600s, both French and Dutch settlers wanted the salt ponds at Great Bay, and they signed the Treaty of Concordia on 23 March 1648, dividing the 87 square kilometre island roughly 54 percent French and 46 percent Dutch. Tradition says the border was drawn by sending two walkers, one French and one Dutch, in opposite directions from Oyster Pond. The Frenchman, fortified with wine, outpaced the Dutchman, who had been given gin, which is why the French portion is slightly larger. The border has held for 378 years without a shot fired, making it the world's smallest peacefully divided island. Marigot is the French capital with about 35,000 residents across the collectivity, and Philipsburg is the Dutch capital with about 1,000 in town, though Sint Maarten holds about 32,000.
Saint Barthélemy has the most unusual heritage. Discovered by Columbus in 1493 and named after his brother Bartolomeo, it was sold to Sweden in 1784. For 94 years, until 1878, Saint Barts was Swedish, and Gustavia is named after King Gustav III. France bought it back in 1878, attached it to Guadeloupe, and only in 2007 was Saint Barthélemy made a separate French overseas collectivity. The population today is about 9,000. The Rockefellers built a holiday home in the 1950s, Pierre Cardin established Le Moulin de Bretagne, the Eden Roc hotel became a fashion favourite, and Russian oligarchs joined American billionaires in Gustavia harbour at Christmas. Michelin starred dining sits beside lolo barbecue shacks.
Hurricane Irma struck on 6 September 2017. Recovery ran from 2018 through 2023, with Princess Juliana's new terminal opening in late 2024. In 2026 the islands are noticeably better built than before.
3. Best Time to Visit
The dry, cool, low humidity season runs from mid December through mid April. I went in late February with strong trade winds, minimal rain and restaurant availability with a week's notice.
May, June and early July are the shoulder, with daily highs around 30 Celsius and prices down 30 to 40 percent. Diving visibility around Tintamarre and the Prickly Pear Cays is excellent.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, with the riskiest window mid August to mid October. Visit then only with comprehensive insurance and flexible flights.
The Anguilla Summer Festival, the island's Carnival, falls in early August. Saint Martin's Concordia Day is around 11 November. The Saint Barts Music Festival runs through January, with classical and jazz performers in the Anglican church in Gustavia.
4. Tier 1 Anchors: The Five Places You Cannot Miss
Shoal Bay East, Anguilla
Travel magazines have repeatedly named Shoal Bay East the world's top beach, and it lives up to the noise. Three kilometres of fine white sand on the north coast, water grading from clear to deep blue, a reef offshore that breaks the waves, and only a handful of small bars rather than concrete resorts. I walked the full length at 7 am with two other people and a stray dog, and had grilled crayfish at Uncle Ernie's.
Sandy Island, Anguilla
A 30 minute boat from Sandy Ground brings you to this 0.04 square kilometre speck with exactly 10 palm trees and one beach bar. It is uninhabited and photogenic. Boat fare in 2026 is about 65 US dollars round trip, lunch with one cocktail adds 50, and the snorkelling on the reef just south is some of the cleanest I have ever seen.
Maho Beach, Sint Maarten
Princess Juliana International Airport's runway ends 50 feet above the sand. Wide bodied jets descend so low you can read the rivets, and the jet blast on takeoff has knocked over tourists who ignored the warning signs. The Sunset Bar and Grill posts the day's incoming flights; the 3 pm KLM Boeing 777 from Amsterdam is the classic shot.
Gustavia, Saint Barthélemy
A working harbour, cobbled streets, the small Swedish era Anglican church, and yachts that cost more than my entire town. Walk up to Fort Karl for the sunset view, eat at a lolo for under 30 Euros, and budget one big meal at L'Isola or Bonito.
Marigot, Saint Martin
The French capital has a Wednesday and Saturday market at the harbour, the ruins of Fort Louis on the hill above, and bakeries serving pain au chocolat at French prices. I based here four nights.
5. Tier 2 Stops: Five More Worth the Detour
The Concordia Treaty Border
The land crossing between Bellevue on the French side and Cole Bay on the Dutch side is marked by a small stone monument noting the 23 March 1648 Treaty. There is no passport check, no booth, no soldier. I walked across it twice for the novelty.
Pinel Island
A 10 minute open boat from Cul de Sac on the northeast French coast lands you on Pinel, a 0.5 square kilometre nature reserve with two beach bars, calm shallow water and a one hour walking trail. Boat tickets in 2026 are about 12 Euros return.
Tintamarre
A larger uninhabited island further offshore, often combined with Pinel on a day trip. The southern beach has fine grey sand, and the reef off the western point is excellent for snorkelling. Many tour boats include a 'mud bath' stop where you scrape mineral clay from the cliff and slather it on for a face mask, which is sillier and more enjoyable than it sounds.
Anse de Colombier, Saint Barts
Reached only by a 25 minute coastal hike from the Petite Anse car park or by boat, Colombier is the wildest beach on Saint Barts. No bar, no road, just sea grape trees, white sand and turtles that occasionally swim into the shallows. Bring water and snorkel gear.
Saline Beach, Saint Barts
Behind a salt pond on the south coast, Saline requires a five minute walk over a low dune, which keeps the crowds light. The waves are bigger than the rest of the island, the sand is fine white, and there are no facilities at all, which is precisely the point. Reef sandals are useful.
6. Detailed Cost Table
Anguilla uses the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD), which is pegged at 2.70 XCD to 1 US dollar. Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy use the Euro. Sint Maarten officially uses the Netherlands Antillean Guilder, but US dollars are accepted absolutely everywhere at roughly 1.80 ANG to 1 USD. I have converted to Indian rupees at the May 2026 rate of approximately 83 INR to 1 USD.
| Item | Anguilla (XCD) | Saint Martin (EUR) | Saint Barts (EUR) | USD | INR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget guest house per night | 270 | 90 | 220 | 100 to 250 | 8,300 to 20,750 |
| Mid range hotel per night | 540 | 160 | 450 | 200 to 500 | 16,600 to 41,500 |
| Beach bar lunch with one drink | 65 | 22 | 38 | 24 to 42 | 1,990 to 3,490 |
| Sit down dinner main course | 110 | 28 | 55 | 41 to 61 | 3,400 to 5,060 |
| Cappuccino | 14 | 4 | 6 | 5 to 7 | 415 to 580 |
| Litre of bottled water from shop | 5 | 1.50 | 2.50 | 1.85 to 2.75 | 153 to 228 |
| Car hire small economy per day | 135 | 35 | 65 | 39 to 72 | 3,240 to 5,980 |
| Ferry Anguilla to Saint Martin one way | 80 | n/a | n/a | 30 | 2,490 |
| Flight Sint Maarten to Saint Barts return | n/a | n/a | 380 | 140 to 420 | 11,620 to 34,860 |
| Sandy Island boat round trip | 175 | n/a | n/a | 65 | 5,395 |
| Pinel Island boat round trip | n/a | 12 | n/a | 13 | 1,080 |
| UK ETA for Anguilla one off | 27 | n/a | n/a | 10 | 830 |
A frugal solo traveller can do the triangle on roughly 180 US dollars a day if they stay on Saint Martin and take day boats to Anguilla and a single overnight to Saint Barts. A comfortable mid range trip runs 300 to 400 a day. Genuine luxury on Saint Barts starts at 1,200 a day and is functionally unlimited at the top.
7. Planning and Logistics
I planned this trip over six weeks. The hard ceiling is flight availability into Princess Juliana, because SXM is small and seats sell out in peak season.
A clean plan: fly into SXM on the Dutch side, spend two to three nights on Saint Martin, take the public 20 minute hourly ferry from Marigot to Anguilla, spend four to five nights, return to Saint Martin, take a 10 minute Winair flight or 45 minute Voyager ferry to Saint Barts, spend two to three nights, fly back to SXM and home.
The common mistake is basing on Saint Barts and day tripping. Flights are short but expensive, SBH closes after sunset, and you lose half a day per transfer. Either overnight or skip it.
8. Visa, Entry and Onward Travel
For Indian passport holders in 2026, the entry picture is friendly.
Anguilla allows visa free entry for 30 days. The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation became mandatory on 8 January 2025 at about £10. Apply online at least 72 hours before travel with a passport valid for six months, a return ticket and proof of accommodation.
Saint Martin falls under Schengen short stay rules, with 30 days visa free on arrival. Saint Barthélemy uses the same rules. Sint Maarten also offers 30 days visa free, although immigration occasionally asks to see your onward booking.
There is no internal border between Saint Martin and Sint Maarten, but you pass full immigration by air. Try to exit by the same side you entered.
Carry the address of your first hotel, printed travel insurance, and at least one credit card. Anguilla has been known to request proof of funds for longer stays.
9. Getting Around the Triangle
On Anguilla, hire a car. There is no public bus, taxis are pricey, and the island is 26 km long. A small car costs about 50 US dollars a day. Drive on the left. An International Driving Permit from India plus a 25 US dollar Anguilla temporary visitor licence through the rental agency are required.
On Saint Martin and Sint Maarten, drive on the right. The loop road takes under three hours. Cars from SXM start around 35 Euros a day. Taxis are metered by zone, so confirm before boarding. A blue French side bus runs hourly between Marigot, Grand Case and Orient Bay for about 2 Euros.
On Saint Barts, hire a Mini or Suzuki Jimny for about 65 Euros a day. The roads are steep and the airport runway crosses the only access road to Saint Jean beach, so traffic stops for incoming flights. No public transport.
The Anguilla ferry from Blowing Point to Marigot runs every 30 to 45 minutes at about 30 US dollars one way plus departure tax. The Voyager ferry from Marigot to Gustavia is about 75 Euros one way. Winair's 10 minute hop from SXM to SBH is about 190 Euros one way and is one of the most scenic short flights in the world.
10. Where to Stay
On Anguilla, I split my time between a guest house near Sandy Ground at 95 US dollars and a beachfront cottage at Shoal Bay at 220.
On Saint Martin, Marigot has mid range hotels at 120 to 200 Euros, and Grand Case is the gourmet capital. On the Dutch side, Simpson Bay is near the airport and the casinos.
On Saint Barts, the cheapest legitimate option is a studio rental at 220 Euros, mid range hotels run 450 to 700, and the Eden Roc at Saint Jean and the Cheval Blanc at Flamands start north of 2,000.
Book December to April three months ahead. May to November allows two week lead times.
11. Food and Drink
Anguillan food is Caribbean. Grilled crayfish, conch stewed in pepper and onion, johnny cakes for breakfast, and local rum. Smokey's at Cove Bay and Tasty's near The Valley were solid. Expect 40 to 60 US dollars for a beach lunch with one cocktail.
Saint Martin's French side eats above its weight. Grand Case has around 30 restaurants in one street. Lolos serve grilled ribs, plantains and rice for about 18 Euros. Marigot's Wednesday market sells baguettes, goat cheese and Pyrenees sausage.
Sint Maarten leans Dutch and international. Bobotie near Philipsburg, bitterballen in Simpson Bay, and American steakhouses near the casinos.
Saint Barts is Michelin starred dining meeting lolo barbecue. The lolos at Saline charge 25 Euros for grilled fish, L'Isola in Gustavia charges 180 Euros for a tasting menu.
Tap water is officially safe across all three territories. Tipping is 15 percent in Anguilla, 10 percent on the French side where service is often included.
12. Cultural Notes and Etiquette
Anguillans are formal in the British Caribbean way. Greet before asking questions, dress modestly off the beach, and keep voices low in shops. Sundays are quiet outside resorts.
Saint Martin is bilingual French and Patois, with English widely spoken. Lunches are long and shops close 12 to 2 pm. The Concordia Treaty heritage is a point of pride.
Sint Maarten feels Dutch Caribbean, with English as the working language and a casino and cruise economy.
Saint Barts is French and quietly status conscious. Greet shopkeepers with bonjour. The Music Festival in January and the Bucket Regatta in March bring high society.
Key festivals: Anguilla Summer Festival in early August, Saint Martin Carnival in late February and Concordia Day on 11 November, Sint Maarten Carnival in April, Saint Barts Music Festival in January.
13. Useful Phrases in English, French, Dutch and Patois
English is universal across all three territories, but a little French goes a long way on the French side, and a few words in Patois will earn you genuine smiles.
- Hello, English
- Bonjour, French
- Goedendag, Dutch
- Bon jou, Saint Martin Patois
- Thank you, English
- Merci, French
- Dank u wel, Dutch
- Tangki, Patois
- Please, English
- S'il vous plait, French
- Alstublieft, Dutch
- Where is the beach, English
- Ou est la plage, French
- Waar is het strand, Dutch
- Goodbye, English
- Au revoir, French
- Tot ziens, Dutch
- How much is this, English / Combien ca coute, French
- Excuse me, English / Excusez moi, French / Pardon, Dutch
- Cheers, English / Sante, French / Proost, Dutch
14. Pre Trip Preparation Checklist
Power plugs differ. Anguilla uses British Type G at 110 V. Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy use European Type C and E at 220 V. Sint Maarten uses American Type A and B at 110 V. Carry a multi adapter.
Sun protection is non negotiable. The reefs around Pinel and Tintamarre are protected, so use reef safe zinc sunscreen. A hat, polarised sunglasses and a rash vest save your shoulders on long boat days.
No vaccinations are required from India. Bring prescription medicines in original packaging and travel insurance with air evacuation cover. Saint Barts has a small hospital, Saint Martin a larger one, Anguilla a clinic. Serious cases fly to Martinique or Puerto Rico.
For hurricane season travel (June to November), set flight cancellation alerts and screenshot your hotel's storm policy.
Driving switches between left in Anguilla and right in Saint Martin within one week. Take the first 20 minutes slowly.
Bring US dollars for Anguilla (accepted everywhere alongside XCD). Use cards on the French side. ATMs charge per withdrawal.
A Saint Martin SIM works on both sides and roams to Saint Barts. Anguilla needs its own SIM or roaming.
15. Three Tested Itineraries
Five Day Sampler
Day 1, fly into SXM, transfer to Marigot, walk the harbour and eat lolo at Sunset Cafe. Day 2, drive the French side loop including Orient Bay and Grand Case. Day 3, ferry to Anguilla, base at Sandy Ground, sunset at Sandy Ground beach. Day 4, full day at Shoal Bay East with lunch at Uncle Ernie's. Day 5, ferry back to Saint Martin and fly home.
Eight Day Standard
Add to the sampler a Saint Barts overnight via Winair on day 5, lunch at Saline beach and dinner at a Gustavia lolo on day 6, morning swim at Anse de Colombier on day 7, and fly back to SXM late afternoon for the final night near the airport.
Twelve Day Deep Dive
Take the eight day plan and add three nights on Anguilla including Sandy Island, Prickly Pear Cays and Little Bay; one extra night on Saint Barts for Eden Roc and Fort Karl; and a slow final day on the Dutch side with Maho beach plane spotting and a sunset at Simpson Bay.
16. Frequently Asked Questions
Do Indians really get visa free entry to all three islands. Yes, 30 days each for short tourism, with the additional UK ETA required for Anguilla since January 2025.
Is it safe after Hurricane Irma. Yes. All major infrastructure was rebuilt by 2023, the airport at SXM has a new terminal, and hotels are at full operation. Insurance is still wise during hurricane season.
Which side of Saint Martin is better. I prefer the French side for food and beaches, and the Dutch side for nightlife and the airport. Many travellers split the trip.
Is Saint Barts affordable on a budget. Day trips by ferry plus a lolo lunch can keep a day under 100 Euros. Overnights start at 220.
How many days do I need on Anguilla. Four full days are enough for the main beaches and Sandy Island. A week is better if you want to slow down.
Can I cross the Concordia border easily. Yes, by road or on foot, with no passport check. The monument is small but worth a photo.
Do I need to speak French. No, English works everywhere, but a polite bonjour and merci will improve service noticeably on the French side.
Which airport should I fly into. Princess Juliana SXM on the Dutch side handles all major intercontinental routes. Anguilla AXA is smaller and best for regional connections, Saint Barts SBH is tiny and only for the 10 minute hop from SXM.
