Best 2-Day Trip Destinations in Tamil Nadu
Last updated: April 2026 · 12 min read
I lived in Chennai for four years, in a flat off Velachery, and I used every Friday-night-to-Sunday-night window I had. Tamil Nadu has the most useful weekend-trip cluster I've found anywhere in India. From Chennai you can be on a beach by 9 PM, in a hill station by sunrise, or in a Chola-era temple courtyard before lunch. From Bangalore the western edge opens up - Hogenakkal, Yelagiri, Yercaud , all within four to five hours. From Hyderabad, an overnight train delivers you to Salem or Madurai before breakfast.
This is the list I wish someone had handed me my first month in the south. Real INR prices, the road numbers I drove (NH-32 to Pondicherry is the one I know best), and trips that fit a two-day window. I've left out places that need three days minimum (Madurai-Rameshwaram, the Western Ghats interior) - those deserve their own write-ups.
TL;DR: My top picks for a 2-day Tamil Nadu trip - Pondicherry (3 hr from Chennai, French Quarter and Promenade), Mahabalipuram (1 hr, UNESCO Shore Temple), Yelagiri (4 hr from Chennai / 3 hr from Bangalore, low-key hill), Kodaikanal (8 hr but worth it), Yercaud (5 hr from Chennai), Thanjavur (5 hr, Brihadeeswarar Temple), and Kanyakumari (10 hr, the southern tip . Overnight train is better than driving).
How to think about a Tamil Nadu weekend
The state is roughly 380 km tall and 320 km wide, so distances matter. I plan trips around three modes:
- Self-drive or cab: Best for Pondicherry, Mahabalipuram, Yelagiri, Yercaud, Hogenakkal. Tamil Nadu's national highways (NH-32 to Pondy, NH-44 down the spine, NH-179 to Yelagiri) are well-maintained four- and six-laners. A Swift Dzire from Zoomcar runs around INR 2,200/day plus fuel, which works out cheaper than a one-way cab if you're going somewhere remote.
- Train: For Thanjavur, Kanyakumari, Madurai, and Coonoor. The Vaigai Express, Pandian Express, and Kanyakumari Express are overnight options that save you a day. Sleeper class is INR 350-450, 3AC is INR 950-1,100.
- Flight: Only worth it for Madurai (1 hr from Chennai) on a tight schedule. Kanyakumari has no airport - fly to Trivandrum and drive 90 minutes.
For two-day trips I default to the car. You leave Friday night around 9 PM after work, sleep at the destination, get a full Saturday and most of Sunday, and drive back Sunday evening. And the math just works.
#1 Pondicherry , the easiest weekend in south India
Pondicherry (officially Puducherry, but nobody calls it that) is the trip I've done the most , probably eight or nine times. From Chennai it's 165 km on NH-32. At 4 AM on a Saturday I've made it in 2 hours 40 minutes; normal traffic, three hours.
What I actually do there:
- French Quarter walk at 7 AM before the heat. So rue Romain Rolland, Rue Suffren, the yellow-walled houses around Bharathi Park. Coffee at Café des Arts (INR 180). - Promenade Beach in the evening , closed to traffic from 6 PM. Gandhi statue, lighthouse, vendors selling sundal for INR 30. - Auroville next morning . 12 km north. Matrimandir viewing pass is free, booked the day before. Cafeteria thali INR 220. - Le Café on the Promenade for breakfast , eggs and toast INR 280, sea view, open 24 hours.
Where I've stayed: La Villa (heritage boutique, INR 8,500-12,000/night, courtyard pool), Palais de Mahe (INR 9,000+), or Hotel de l'Orient (mid-range, INR 4,500-6,500). Bunkyard Hostel is INR 800 a bed.
Skip the booze runs - Pondy alcohol is cheaper due to UT tax structure, but traffic on Sunday evening between Pondy and Tindivanam is brutal because of it.
#2 Mahabalipuram . UNESCO heritage in 1 hour
Mahabalipuram (or Mamallapuram) is 60 km south on the East Coast Road - under an hour from Chennai's southern suburbs. Most people do it as a half-day trip and miss what makes it worth an overnight.
The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/249/), with rock-cut temples from the 7th-century Pallava dynasty. The combined ASI ticket is INR 40 for Indians, INR 600 for foreign visitors.
Over a 1-night stay:
- Shore Temple at sunrise (gates open 6 AM). Empty until 8 AM. Two granite shrines facing the Bay of Bengal, 1,300 years old. - Krishna's Butter Ball , a boulder that has not rolled down a slope for centuries. Free. - Five Rathas . Five chariot-shaped temples cut from single boulders. Arjuna and Bhima rathas are the standouts. - Arjuna's Penance bas-relief - 96 ft long, possibly the largest in the world. Free.
Stay at Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay (INR 6,500-9,500, beachfront pool) or Ideal Beach Resort (INR 4,500-6,500). For seafood, Le Yogi and Moonrakers on Othavadai Street do tiger prawns for INR 600-800.
#3 Yelagiri - the easy hill trip
Yelagiri sits at 1,410 m in the Eastern Ghats, in Vellore district. From Chennai it's 230 km on NH-46 then NH-179, about 4 hours. From Bangalore it's 160 km, 3 hours via Hosur and Krishnagiri. The trip I send people on when they want a hill weekend without the Kodaikanal commitment.
Things to do:
- Punganur Lake . 7-acre lake, pedal boats INR 100/30 min, paddle boats INR 150. - Velavan Temple at the top of the hill , 2 km uphill walk from the town centre. - Paragliding at Yelagiri Adventure Sports - INR 2,500 for a 10-minute tandem flight. April-May and October-November are most reliable. - Swamimalai Hills trek - 3 km one way, easy gradient, sunrise point at the top.
Hotels: Sterling Yelagiri (INR 4,500-5,500, full board, pool), MGM Hill View Resort (INR 3,500-4,800), or Hotel Cottage at INR 2,500/night. Two days is the right dose.
#4 Kodaikanal , worth the 8-hour drive
Kodaikanal at 2,133 m is 520 km from Chennai, 460 from Bangalore. Driving is 8 hours from Chennai (NH-44 to Dindigul, then ghat road), 6 hours from Madurai. I usually fly or train to Madurai and pick up a cab (INR 3,500 one way).
For a two-day trip, fly Friday night and you'll get a full Saturday and Sunday morning.
What to do:
- Kodai Lake . 60-acre star-shaped lake. Pedal boats INR 200/30 min, rowboats INR 300. Cycling the 5 km loop is INR 80/hour. - Coaker's Walk - 1 km cliff-edge promenade, INR 10 entry. Best at sunrise on a clear day. - Bryant Park , 20-acre botanical garden next to the lake. Annual flower show in May. - Pillar Rocks , three granite pillars 122 m tall, 8 km from town. INR 30 entry. - Berijam Lake - 23 km from town, requires a forest permit (INR 100 plus vehicle charge, 50 vehicles per day cap).
Hotels: The Tamara Kodai (INR 14,000-22,000, restored heritage convent, my one splurge here), Carlton (INR 9,500-15,000, lakefront colonial), Villa Retreat (INR 5,500-7,500). Budget: Greenlands Youth Hostel at INR 1,200 dorm. Bring layers - April nights drop to 12°C.
#5 Yercaud , Salem's hill station
Yercaud is 50 km from Salem city via a 20-hairpin ghat road that climbs to 1,515 m. From Chennai it's 360 km on NH-44, about 5.5 hours. From Bangalore 220 km, 4 hours. Smaller and quieter than Kodai, busier than Yelagiri. So coffee plantations all around , Coorg without the Karnataka prices.
What to do:
- Emerald Lake - 25 acres, boating INR 100-200, walking paths. - Pagoda Point . Sunrise viewpoint with Shiva temple, 5 km from town centre. - Killiyur Falls , 3 km trek through coffee plantations, water October-February. - Lady's Seat and Gent's Seat , viewpoints over the Salem plains. Plus free.
Hotels: Sterling Yercaud Salem (INR 4,500-6,500), Grand Palace Hotel (INR 3,800-5,200, infinity pool), GRT Nature Trails (INR 6,500-9,000). Filter coffee in town: INR 25.
#6 Thanjavur (Tanjore) , the Chola capital
Thanjavur is 320 km from Chennai (5.5 hours by road via NH-32 and NH-36), or you can take the overnight Pallavan Express to Kumbakonam and drive 40 minutes. From Bangalore, fly to Trichy and drive 1 hour.
The reason to come: Brihadeeswarar Temple, also called the Big Temple, built by Rajaraja Chola I and finished in 1010 CE. It's part of the Great Living Chola Temples UNESCO World Heritage Site (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/250/). The vimana (tower) is 66 m tall, all granite, no foundation cement. The shadow of the tower never falls on the ground at noon . The apex is positioned so the shadow falls on itself.
Two-day plan:
- Day 1: Brihadeeswarar Temple morning (free entry, open 6 AM-12:30 PM and 4 PM-8:30 PM, leave shoes outside). Saraswathi Mahal Library afternoon (INR 50, one of the oldest libraries in Asia, Maratha-era manuscripts). Royal Palace and Museum next door (INR 50). - Day 2: Drive to Kumbakonam (40 km) for Airavatesvara Temple (also UNESCO, smaller but more detailed Chola carvings). Plus tanjore painting workshop in the afternoon - Sri Selva Ganapathi Art Studio does 2-hour beginner sessions for INR 1,500.
Hotels: Svatma (INR 12,000-18,000, restored heritage mansion, one of the best stays in Tamil Nadu), Hotel Sangam Thanjavur (INR 4,500-6,500, business hotel), Hotel Gnanam (INR 2,800-4,000, central, decent value).
#7 Kanyakumari . The southern tip
The land's end of India. 700 km from Chennai (12+ hours by road, don't drive), 270 km from Madurai (5 hours). But i always take the Kanyakumari Express (train 12633) that leaves Chennai at 5:25 PM and reaches Kanyakumari at 8:15 AM. 3AC is around INR 1,250.
The trick that makes it work as a 2-day trip: you can see sunset over the Arabian Sea and sunrise over the Bay of Bengal from the same beach, on the same day. April through October the moon also rises over the bay while the sun is still setting over the Arabian Sea - you get all three in 30 minutes.
What to see:
- Vivekananda Rock Memorial - ferry from the mainland, INR 75 round trip plus INR 50 entry. The rock where Swami Vivekananda meditated in 1892. - Thiruvalluvar Statue , 133 ft tall, on a separate rock, accessed by the same ferry. - Sunrise at Sunrise Point , east-facing pier, no entry fee, 5:45-6:15 AM in summer. - Sunset at Sunset Point - west-facing, same beach, 6:00-6:30 PM. - Kanyakumari Amman Temple - the temple to the virgin goddess, on the seafront.
Stay at The Seashore Hotel (INR 4,500-6,500, ocean view), Sparsa Resort (INR 5,500-8,500, 3 km from the point but quiet), or budget Hotel Tri Sea at INR 2,800.
#8 Coonoor - better than Ooty
Locals say Ooty is overcrowded and the climate isn't even cold any more. Plus coonoor, 18 km below Ooty on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, is what Ooty was 30 years ago. From Chennai it's 540 km (10+ hours), so this is a fly-to-Coimbatore-and-drive trip , Coimbatore to Coonoor is 65 km, 2 hours up the ghat. From Bangalore 270 km, 6 hours.
What to do:
- Sim's Park , 12-hectare botanical garden, INR 30 entry, 1,000+ plant species. - Dolphin's Nose - viewpoint with 1,500 ft drop, 10 km from town. INR 15 entry. - Nilgiri Mountain Railway - UNESCO site, toy train from Mettupalayam to Ooty stops at Coonoor. Book the Coonoor-Ooty leg (INR 270 first class, 1 hr 15 min). - Tea estate visit - Highfield, Glendale, or Tranquilitea. Tours INR 300-500.
Hotels: The Gateway Hotel Church Road (INR 8,500-12,000), Acres Wild Cheesemaking Farm (INR 7,000, working dairy farm), or YWCA Wyoming Guest House (INR 2,200, basic but central).
#9 Hogenakkal , the Cauvery falls
Hogenakkal sits on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, on the Cauvery River. So from Bangalore it's 180 km (4 hours via Hosur and Dharmapuri), from Chennai 350 km (6 hours). Technically a day trip but the drive is long enough that one night makes sense.
What to do:
- Coracle ride (parisal) - round basket boats of bamboo and buffalo hide, INR 750 for two people, 1 hour to the base of the falls. Bargain hard. - The falls , water level varies hugely. June-September is full flow (and dangerous). January-March is calmer and safer for swimming. - Fish fry - Mahseer grilled on the riverbank stalls. INR 250-400 a plate.
Stay at Hotel Tamilnadu Hogenakkal (TTDC, INR 1,800-2,800, right at the falls), or drive 30 minutes back to Dharmapuri for Hotel Roy (INR 2,500-3,500).
#10 Tranquebar (Tharangambadi) , the Danish fort
For travellers who've done Pondicherry and want something quieter. Tranquebar is 285 km south of Chennai on NH-32, about 6 hours. The Danish East India Company set up a trading post here in 1620 and Fort Dansborg still stands on the Coromandel Coast.
What's there:
- Fort Dansborg , INR 25 entry, small museum, beach below the ramparts. - Masilamani Nathar Temple , 14th-century Pandya-era temple on the beach. Damaged by the 2004 tsunami, restored. - Danish Cemetery and Zion Church , oldest Protestant church in India (1718).
Stay at Bungalow on the Beach (Neemrana, INR 8,500-13,000, restored 17th-century mansion) or The Gate House (INR 4,500-6,000). Bring a book.
The 2-day combinations that actually work
Some of these can be doubled up if you've stamina:
- Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram: Drive Chennai → Mahabalipuram (1 hr), spend 4 hours, drive on to Pondicherry (2 hrs), overnight. Sunday morning Auroville, drive back via ECR. The classic.
- Salem and Yercaud: Train to Salem Friday night, taxi up to Yercaud Saturday morning, two nights, train back Sunday evening.
- Madurai and Kodaikanal: Fly Friday evening to Madurai, sleep there, drive up to Kodai Saturday morning (3 hrs), Kodai overnight, drive back Sunday afternoon, evening flight from Madurai.
- Trichy and Thanjavur: Fly to Trichy, see Rockfort Temple in Trichy (Saturday morning), drive to Thanjavur (1 hr), Big Temple and museum, overnight, Kumbakonam temples Sunday, fly out from Trichy.
Practical info I wish I had
- TNSTC buses: Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation runs Volvo and Scania AC sleepers from Chennai's Koyambedu (CMBT) to almost every town listed here. Online booking through tnstc.in. Sleeper Pondy is INR 350, Kodai is INR 950.
- Tamil Nadu Tourism: TTDC (https://www.tamilnadutourism.tn.gov.in/) runs Hotel Tamilnadu government hotels in most destinations . Basic, clean, INR 1,800-3,500, often the only option in smaller towns. Reservations through their site.
- Roads: NH-32 (Chennai-Pondicherry) is excellent four-lane. NH-44 (the spine) is six-lane mostly. Ghat roads to Kodai, Yercaud, Coonoor are well-paved but narrow , avoid driving them at night.
- Fuel: Petrol around INR 102-104 per litre as of April 2026. Pumps every 25-30 km on NH routes.
- Toll: Chennai to Pondicherry is INR 240 one way in a car. Chennai to Madurai is INR 580 one way.
- Wikipedia and Wikivoyage: the Tamil Nadu Wikipedia article and Tamil Nadu Wikivoyage page both have decent overview info if you want background reading.

FAQ
Q: Do I need to speak Tamil to travel in Tamil Nadu?
A: No. English works in all hotels, restaurants, and tourist sites. Hindi is hit-or-miss outside Chennai. Bus conductors and small shops may only speak Tamil - keep Google Translate handy. "Vanakkam" (hello) and "nandri" (thank you) go a long way.
Q: Is the tap water safe to drink?
A: No. Stick to bottled water (INR 20 for 1 L) or carry a Lifestraw / Grayl filter. Even at five-star hotels I drink bottled. Ice in roadside drinks is the bigger risk than the water itself.
Q: Is it safe for solo female travellers?
A: Generally yes for the destinations on this list , Pondicherry, Mahabalipuram, Kodaikanal, and Coonoor are very used to solo women. Hogenakkal and Tranquebar are quieter and I'd suggest going with one other person. Avoid arriving at small bus stations after dark. Hotels insist on ID, which is normal procedure not harassment.
Q: Where do I eat? I'm vegetarian / non-vegetarian.
A: Tamil Nadu is exceptionally easy for vegetarians . Saravana Bhavan, Sangeetha, Murugan Idli Shop are reliable chains in every town. For non-veg, look for "military hotels" (a Tamil term for non-veg dhabas) or coastal towns for seafood. Avoid roadside food on the first day until your stomach adjusts.
Q: When is the best time to visit?
A: November to February is cool and dry across the state. March to May gets brutal in the plains (40°C+) but is fine in the hills. June to September is monsoon , Kanyakumari and the coast are wet, the hills are misty and beautiful. October is shoulder season and excellent.
Q: How much should a 2-day trip from Chennai actually cost?
A: Mid-range, two people, including fuel/cab, mid-range hotel, and meals: Pondicherry INR 12,000-18,000. Kodaikanal INR 18,000-25,000. Yelagiri INR 9,000-13,000. Thanjavur INR 14,000-20,000. Halve those for budget travel using TNSTC buses and TTDC hotels.
Q: Can I do these on a motorcycle?
A: Pondicherry, Mahabalipuram, and Yelagiri yes , I've done all three on a Bullet. The ghat roads to Kodai and Coonoor are technically fine but tiring, and rain makes them slick. Hogenakkal road has trucks. Use a full-face helmet and don't ride at night.
Q: How do I book TTDC government hotels?
A: Through https://www.tamilnadutourism.tn.gov.in/ or by walk-in. They rarely sell out except during Pongal (mid-January) and Tamil New Year (April 14). Phone bookings are accepted but call between 10 AM and 5 PM IST.
Q: Are temples open to non-Hindus?
A: Brihadeeswarar in Thanjavur and most temples on this list are open to everyone. A few inner sanctums (the Meenakshi Amman in Madurai, Padmanabhaswamy in Trivandrum) restrict non-Hindus from the innermost shrine but allow you in the outer courtyards. Dress modestly , covered shoulders, knees covered. Leave shoes outside.
