Best 4-Day Getaway Destinations Away From Mumbai
Last updated: April 2026 · 12 min read
I lived in Mumbai for five years, first in Andheri East then near Lower Parel, and I tested almost every long-weekend route. Mumbai sits in a lucky spot on the west coast: drive south and you hit the Konkan beaches, drive east and you climb into the Sahyadri hills, drive north and you cross into Gujarat in under five hours, fly south and you're eating Goan fish thali by dinner. Plus a four-day window . Saturday-Sunday stretched with a Friday WFH and one Monday leave - is the sweet spot.
This is the guide I wish I had when I started. Every place below I drove to in my Maruti Swift, took the Konkan Railway to, or flew via IndiGo from BOM. Plus real fuel costs at INR 105 a litre (April 2026), real Vande Bharat fares I paid last December, and hotels I actually checked into. A couple from Bandra or Powai can do most of these for INR 10,000 to INR 30,000 for the full four days. I also flag monsoon traps nobody warns you about . The landslide-prone Karnala stretch, the Konkan washouts in July.
TL;DR: Strongest 4-day picks from Mumbai are North Goa (10h road or 1h IndiGo), Lonavala-Pune-Khandala (2-3h on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway), Tarkarli on the Konkan coast (10h drive), Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani (4h via NH-48 and Wai), Saputara across the Gujarat border (4h), Aurangabad with Ajanta-Ellora (6h road or 1h flight to IXU), Daman-Diu, and Matheran (3h plus toy train). Couple budget for 4 days lands INR 10,000 to INR 30,000 depending on fly vs drive.
The 4-Day Mumbai Framework: Drive vs Train vs Flight
Before picking a destination, work out the transport mode. My rule: under 5 hours one-way, drive; 5 to 9 hours, train; over 9 hours, fly if there's an airport, otherwise Konkan Railway sleepers cost a third of road fuel.
Driving makes sense for Lonavala, Pune, Mahabaleshwar, Matheran, Kashid, Saputara, Daman. Mumbai-Pune Expressway tolls are INR 320 one-way for a hatchback; FASTag is mandatory, no cash lanes since 2021. NH-48 is good till Pune. NH-66, the Konkan highway, is painful: two lanes, heavy truck traffic near Chiplun, monsoon waterlogging at Karnala-Pen. Trains work for Goa (Vande Bharat 22229, CSMT 5:25 AM, Madgaon 1:15 PM), Aurangabad (Devagiri overnight), and the Konkan stretch.
Season matters. And october to February is the easy window: clear skies, cool air, no closures. March to May is brutal except in Mahabaleshwar and Matheran (altitude) and Tadoba (dry forest pulls tigers to waterholes). June to September is monsoon - gorgeous for Lonavala, Saputara, Matheran, but dangerous on Konkan roads and useless in Goa where most shacks shut.
#1 North Goa , The Default Answer for a Reason
North Goa is the destination Mumbai people pretend to be tired of and then book again. Vande Bharat 22229 CSMT to Madgaon takes 8 hours, chair-car INR 1,500 to INR 1,800 booked two weeks ahead on IRCTC. NH-66 by car is 10 to 12 hours depending on Chiplun traffic, petrol round trip about INR 4,800. IndiGo and Air India Express fly BOM to GOX (Mopa) in 1h 5m; advance returns INR 4,500 to INR 7,000 per person.
I always base in North Goa. Casa Vagator (Ozran side, walking to Thalassa) is INR 7,000 a night for a deluxe with breakfast in shoulder season. Resort Rio in Mandrem, quieter, INR 5,500 with pool and breakfast. Over four days I do Anjuna flea market Wednesday, Vagator for sunset and dinner at Thalassa (book ahead, the Greek lamb is worth it), Baga-Calangute for the touristy day, Saturday Night Market at Arpora. Skip Tito's. Eat at Britto's for crab xacuti and Gunpowder in Assagao.
#2 Pune, Lonavala, and Khandala , The Easy Win
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is the smoothest road in Maharashtra. And worli to Koregaon Park is 3h 15m if you leave by 6 AM, four hours by 9 AM. Tolls INR 320 one-way for a small car. The 4-day split: Day 1 Lonavala, Day 2 Khandala plus Karla and Bhaja caves, Day 3 Pune city, Day 4 buffer for traffic back.
I treat Lonavala as a base. Skip the chikki shops on the main road - go to Lonavala lake, Rajmachi viewpoint at sunset, and Tiger Point (now Tiger's Leap) for sunrise. Be there by 6 AM in winter; the cloud inversion below the cliff edge is the kind of thing that makes you forget you've a Monday meeting. Karla caves off the expressway are 2nd century BCE Buddhist rock-cut work, entry INR 25. Bhaja caves, 3 km away, are quieter and free of bus tour groups.
In Pune the Aga Khan Palace in Yerwada is my one heritage stop. Gandhiji and Kasturba were interned here in 1942; Kasturba's samadhi is on the grounds. So entry INR 25, allow 90 minutes. For food: misal pav at Bedekar Tea Stall in Narayan Peth (open since 1948), bhakarwadi from Chitale Bandhu, dinner at Vaishali on FC Road - the SPDP and dosa combo is the meal I dream about. Stay at The Pride Hotel in Shivajinagar for INR 5,200, or Hotel Surya Villa in Koregaon Park at INR 2,800.
#3 Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani - Strawberries and Sahyadri Edges
Mahabaleshwar sits at 1,353 metres and the drive from Mumbai is 4 hours via NH-48 to Mahad, then up the Pratapgad ghat road. The road has 27 hairpin bends in the final climb; buy Avomine before Pen if you get motion sickness. Panchgani, 19 km before Mahabaleshwar, is the better base in peak season because it's less crowded.
Day 1: drive up, check in, evening at Venna Lake for boating (INR 200 for a 4-seater paddle boat). Day 2: Pratapgad Fort, the Shivaji-Afzal Khan ambush site from 1659, entry INR 25, 30 km from town. Day 3: Arthur's Seat at sunrise, Mapro Garden for strawberry-and-cream breakfast (the Maharashtra strawberry season runs November to March and Mapro is the original farm), then Sydney and Wilson Points. But day 4: drive back via Wai for the riverside Ganpati temple.
I've stayed twice at Hotel Mountain View near the bus stand at INR 4,500 a night , decent rooms, walking distance to the market. Le Meridien Mahabaleshwar (INR 11,000) is the splurge option, worth it for the spa on a couples trip.
#4 Tarkarli and Sindhudurg - Konkan's Best Beach
Tarkarli is what I recommend when someone says they're tired of Goa. But it's in Sindhudurg district, the southern Konkan, and the water is the cleanest on the west coast , properly turquoise. The drive is 10 hours via NH-66, or Konkan Railway to Kudal (Tutari Express overnight) and a 40-minute taxi.
The headline activity is scuba diving at Sindhudurg fort. IISDA-certified operators run a 30-minute introductory dive for INR 3,500 including boat, gear, instructor, photos. I went with Mermaid Tarkarli in 2024 and got 8 metres visibility . Genuinely good for India. Snorkelling alone INR 800. Dolphin boats leave 6 AM from Devbag jetty, sightings 70% reliable October to May. Sindhudurg Fort, built by Shivaji in 1664, is a 20-minute boat ride from Malvan jetty and 2 hours to walk; entry INR 10.
MTDC Tarkarli Beach Resort is the obvious stay - INR 3,800 for a Konkani cottage, book three weeks ahead on the Maharashtra Tourism site. For food, Atithi Bamboo at Malvan does Malvani thalis (surmai fry, prawn curry, sol kadhi) under INR 500 a head.
#5 Aurangabad, Ajanta, and Ellora , UNESCO in Two Days
Aurangabad (officially Sambhaji Nagar) is the only 4-day Mumbai trip with world-level sites. Ellora has 34 cave temples spanning Buddhist, Hindu and Jain traditions from the 6th to 10th century CE; Kailasa (Cave 16) is the largest monolithic excavation on earth, carved top-down from a basalt cliff. And ajanta is older . 2nd century BCE to 6th century CE - 30 caves of Buddhist murals lost to the jungle until a British hunting party stumbled on them in 1819.
IndiGo flies BOM to IXU in 1h 5m, advance fares INR 3,200 each way. Plus the overnight Devagiri Express from CSMT works for budget , sleeper INR 380, 2AC INR 1,400, departs 9:05 PM, arrives 5:30 AM. Day 1 arrive, Bibi Ka Maqbara in the afternoon (the smaller Mughal mausoleum, the "poor man's Taj"). Day 2 Ellora . Get there by 9 AM, allow 6 hours, Cave 16 alone is two hours. Day 3 Ajanta, 100 km from the city, leave by 7 AM. Day 4 Daulatabad fort on the way back.
Vivanta Aurangabad by Taj is INR 6,500 a night with a good pool, or Hotel Panchavati at INR 2,200. Eat Naan Khaliya, the local slow-cooked mutton curry, at Bhoj Restaurant.
#6 Saputara - Monsoon's Underrated Hill Station
Saputara is in southern Gujarat, 4 hours from Mumbai via NH-48 to Surat and then the Vyara-Saputara state highway. So most Mumbaikars have never heard of it, which is why it works when Lonavala turns into a parking lot. It sits at 1,000 metres on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border, and monsoon (June to September) is when it earns its keep , clouds rolling through the hotel balcony, waterfalls everywhere.
The ropeway to the sunset point is INR 100 round trip, lake boating INR 80. Step Garden, Hatgadh Fort (Shivaji-era), and the tribal museum fill four days. Aanando Resort INR 4,200 a night, Hotel Patang INR 2,800. Saputara is fully vegetarian, no meat or alcohol , Gujarat is dry , plan accordingly.
#7 Matheran , The No-Vehicles Hill Station
Matheran is the closest hill station to Mumbai (90 km) but the furthest psychologically - no motor vehicles allowed inside town limits since 1907. Park at Dasturi Naka and walk, take a horse, or ride the toy train (when it runs - Matheran Hill Railway has had monsoon suspensions since 2005; check IRCTC).
Day 1 arrive, walk to Charlotte Lake for sunset. Day 2 sunrise at Panorama Point, afternoon at Echo Point. Day 3 Louisa and Porcupine Points and the long walk to Garbett Plateau. Day 4 down. Hotel Lord's Central, the Parsi-built heritage from 1910, is the place to stay . INR 5,800 a night with all three meals (matters because there's nowhere outside the hotel to eat well after dark). Verandah in the Forest is INR 7,800, worth it once. The pollution-free air is real; after three days the air in Mumbai feels dirty when you return.
#8 Diu and Daman . Two Tiny Portuguese Pockets
Daman is 170 km north of Mumbai, 3 hours via NH-48. Diu is the better of the two ex-Portuguese enclaves but it's 900 km away on the Saurashtra coast - fly direct on Alliance Air (DIU has 2 weekly flights from Mumbai) or train to Veraval and 90-minute taxi.
For 4 days, pick Diu over Daman; Daman has gone seedy around Devka beach. Diu has Diu Fort (Portuguese, 1535, free entry), St Paul's Church (1610, the only Baroque church in the region), Nagoa Beach with its clean horseshoe bay and Hoka palms, and Naida Caves. Hotel Radhika Beach Resort INR 5,000 with pool, Hoka Inn INR 2,500 without. Diu is a Union Territory so liquor is permitted, unlike neighbouring Gujarat.
#9 Konkan Villages - Ganpatipule, Velneshwar, Kashid
For a slow 4 days, skip the marquee names and pick a Konkan village. Kashid Beach is 3 hours south of Mumbai (drive past Alibaug to Murud, 165 km) and the white-sand crescent is the prettiest beach within easy weekend reach. Kashid Beach Resort, INR 4,500. Ganpatipule is 350 km south, 8 hours; the Swayambhu Ganesh temple sits on the beach. MTDC Ganpatipule Beach Resort at INR 3,500, with Bhau Joshi Restaurant nearby for Malvani thalis.
Velneshwar is the secret. 50 km north of Guhagar, one beach, one 11th-century Shiva temple, two homestays, almost no tourists. Ganesh Beach Resort INR 2,800. The four days: do nothing, swim, eat fish, sleep.
#10 Wildlife Option . Tadoba and Tipeshwar
If your 4 days are April or May, the heat turns into the best tiger-spotting season in central India. Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is in Chandrapur district , fly to Nagpur (1h 25m from BOM, advance fares INR 4,000) and take a 3-hour taxi; driving is too long at 1,000 km.
I went in May 2024 and saw three tigers in five safaris, including a sub-adult male at Telia Lake. Safari permits cost INR 4,500 per jeep (six seats) plus INR 2,000 for the guide; book through the Maharashtra Forest portal at least 60 days ahead. Svasara Jungle Lodge at Kolara gate is INR 14,000 a night all-inclusive, MTDC Resort Tadoba INR 5,500 on a budget. Tipeshwar in Yavatmal is the quieter alternative - equally good sightings, 14 hours by road.
4-Day Combinations . Stitching Two Places Together
Some destinations are too small to fill four days alone. Combinations that work:
- Lonavala and Pune - 2 hill days, 2 city days, 4 hours each way.
- Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, and Pratapgad - the standard combo.
- Alibaug, Kashid, and Murud-Janjira - three Konkan stops in a 200 km coastal loop.
- Aurangabad, Ajanta, Ellora, and Daulatabad - the only realistic way to cover all four sites.
- Tarkarli, Vengurla, and Amboli , two beaches and a waterfall hill station 70 km inland.
Avoid combining North Goa with anything else . It needs all four days; adding Gokarna or Hampi turns the trip into a transit grind.

Practical Stuff Nobody Tells You
FASTag is mandatory. Without one, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway booth charges double and the cash lane adds 25 minutes. Paytm or HDFC FASTag , 10-minute setup at any toll plaza.
Rapido vs Ola Outstation. Ola Outstation runs INR 12 per km plus INR 250 driver allowance for a sedan. Rapido bike rentals at the destination are INR 350 a day for an Activa in Goa or Pune. Zoomcar self-drive runs INR 2,500 to INR 4,000 a day for a Swift , often cheaper than two return train tickets for a couple.
Konkan Railway tickets sell out 90 days ahead in peak season (Diwali, Christmas, May). Tatkal opens 11 AM the day before and goes in 90 seconds , be on IRCTC at 10:58 AM with a saved master list.
Monsoon road risks. NH-66 between Pen and Mangaon has had landslides every July since 2019. The Pratapgad ghat road floods. The old Khandala ghat (not the expressway) drops below 20m visibility in heavy rain. Stick to the expressway, skip Konkan in July, check Maharashtra Highway Police Twitter before monsoon weekends.
Drinking water is fine in urban hotels. In village stays (Velneshwar, Tipeshwar, some Tarkarli homestays) carry a Lifestraw or use bottled. Bisleri 1L runs INR 20 statewide.
Female safety. Maharashtra is one of India's safer states for solo female travel. Goa, Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar, Matheran, Aurangabad and Pune are fine after dark. Go in pairs only in the Tadoba forest stretch and older Aurangabad after 10 PM.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to drive alone from Mumbai for a 4-day trip?
Yes for expressway routes - Pune, Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar, Saputara - and Konkan in winter. Avoid solo night driving on NH-66 below Chiplun; truck traffic and visibility are bad. Carry a power bank, FASTag, and download offline Google Maps before leaving.
Are these destinations safe for solo female travellers?
The mainstream ones are. North Goa, Pune, Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar, Matheran and Aurangabad city have well-lit areas, regular police, and many weekly solo female visitors. Tarkarli and Diu are low-crime but small - bring a friend on a first solo trip. Avoid solo night walks in Daman (Devka) and older Aurangabad.
Is the drinking water safe?
In branded hotels (Vivanta, Le Meridien, Pride, Casa Vagator) the in-room water is filtered. In MTDC properties and homestays, use bottled or a Lifestraw. Bisleri INR 20 a litre everywhere.
When is the worst time for Konkan road trips?
June 15 to September 20. NH-66 has annual landslide spots at Karnala, Pen, Chiplun. Konkan Railway runs at reduced speed in heavy rain. If you must travel monsoon, fly to Goa or Aurangabad.
Which 4-day trip is cheapest for a couple?
Saputara at INR 9,500 to INR 11,000 total . INR 4,200 fuel, INR 11,200 hotel at Patang for 4 nights, INR 4,000 food and entries. Matheran is similarly cheap if you skip the toy train and walk up.
Which 4-day trip is the most luxurious?
Tadoba with Svasara Jungle Lodge plus IndiGo to Nagpur is INR 80,000 per couple with 5 safaris and all meals. North Goa with Casa Vagator and flights comes in around INR 35,000 per couple.
Can I do North Goa as a 3-day trip?
Only if you fly. Drive plus 3 days wastes 22 hours on the road for 50 hours of beach. Fly Friday morning, fly back Monday evening , 3 full days. The only honest way to do Goa in a long weekend.
Best 4-day trip during peak summer (April-May)?
Mahabaleshwar (altitude), Matheran (altitude), or Tadoba for tiger safaris (heat brings tigers to waterholes). Skip Goa, Konkan, Aurangabad and Saputara in May - daytime temperatures hit 38-42°C.
Final Thoughts
Mumbai's geography is its best gift. In four days you can be on a Goan beach, inside a 1,500-year-old cave, watching a tiger drink at a waterhole, or eating strawberry cream on a Sahyadri cliff. The only mistake is staying in the city for the long weekend.
