Best Destinations in Himachal Pradesh for Travelers

I've been travelling around Himachal Pradesh on and off for almost a decade, and the question I get asked most by friends planning a first trip is "where should I actually go?" The state has more good destinations than any single trip can cover. Twelve places I keep returning to, grouped by region, with real INR prices I've paid in the last two seasons. So drive times are from Delhi, and there's a seven-day route at the end.

How I Think About Himachal Geography

It helps to picture the state as four loose clusters because that's how trips actually get planned.

The North cluster centres on Manali . Solang, Rohtang, the Kullu valley, and the Parvati side roads off it. The Central cluster is Shimla with satellites like Kufri, Chail, and Narkanda. The West cluster covers Dharamshala, McLeodganj, Dalhousie, Khajjiar, and Bir Billing. The East cluster is the high-altitude desert side . Spiti, Lahaul, Kinnaur , open mostly June through September because of snow on the passes.

Picking a cluster matters because moving between them eats driving days. Manali to Dharamshala is a full eight-hour day. Shimla to Spiti is two days minimum. So I tell people: pick one cluster, maybe two if you've ten days, and stop trying to cram everything. My 5N6D Himachal birthday trip writeup covers a shorter version of the same logic.

1. Manali - The Default First Trip

Manali is where almost everyone starts. It packs snow access, river views, decent food, paragliding, and Old Manali's backpacker strip into one walkable area. Delhi drive is 12 to 14 hours by road, or 11 hours on the HRTC overnight Volvo.

Top three things I do here:
1. Half-day at Solang Valley for paragliding - joyrides INR 1,800 to 3,000 depending on flight length.
2. Drive up to Rohtang Pass when permits open mid-May . Taxi day-rate INR 4,500 to 6,500 plus permit fee.
3. Walk the Old Manali strip at evening , riverside cafes, German bakeries, second-hand bookshops.

Hotel range: Hostel beds INR 500-800. Mid-range guesthouses in Old Manali INR 1,500-2,800. Riverside hotels in New Manali or Vashisht INR 3,500-6,500.

Drive from Delhi: 12-14 hours by car, 11 hours by Volvo bus.

Best months: April to June, then mid-September to early November. Avoid July-August unless you genuinely enjoy landslides and traffic.

2. Shimla , Toy Train and Pine Forests

I've a soft spot for Shimla because of the Kalka toy train, which sounds touristy until you actually do it. The colonial bones . The Mall, Christ Church, Gaiety Theatre , feel intact if you walk past the souvenir shops.

Top three things I do here:
1. Take the Kalka-Shimla narrow-gauge train, five hours, INR 350-800 by class.
2. Walk Mall Road end to end at sunset and grab momos at side stalls (INR 80-150 a plate).
3. Day-trip to Naldehra or Mashobra for pine air without the Mall Road crowds.

Hotel range: Budget rooms near Lakkar Bazaar INR 1,200-2,200. Mid-range Mall-area heritage hotels INR 3,000-5,500. Top-end colonial properties INR 8,000-14,000.

Drive from Delhi: 7 to 8 hours by car. HRTC overnight Volvo runs INR 800-1,100.

Best months: March to June and October to early February (if you want the snow).

3. Dharamshala / McLeodganj - Tibetan Quarter

McLeodganj sits on a ridge above Dharamshala proper, treated as one destination. The Dalai Lama lives here, the thukpa is excellent, and you can sign up for a ten-day vipassana if that's your thing. The crowd mixes Tibetan monks, Israeli backpackers, Punjabi weekenders, and retreat retirees.

Top three things I do here:
1. Walk to Bhagsu waterfall and the small temple beside it , free, an hour round trip.
2. Visit Tsuglagkhang (the main temple) and the Tibetan museum next door.
3. Eat at Lung Ta or Nick's Italian , meals INR 250-450.

Hotel range: Backpacker hostels INR 450-800. Mid-range guesthouses with views INR 1,400-2,800. Boutique forest cottages above town INR 4,000-7,500.

Drive from Delhi: 10 to 11 hours by car. HRTC Volvo overnight INR 900-1,400.

Best months: March to June and September to November.

4. Kasol and Tosh - The Parvati Valley

Kasol along the Parvati river is where I send anyone wanting riverside cafes and easy walks without Spiti's elevation. Tosh, an hour further up, is the village I prefer for quieter mornings. The valley is sometimes called Mini-Israel - shakshuka and hummus on most menus.

Top three things I do here:
1. Walk the Kasol-Chalal trail along the river , flat, free, 90 minutes round trip.
2. Hike to Kheerganga from Barshaini for the hot springs . Three to four hours each way, INR 50 entry.
3. Stay a night in Tosh for the silence, in a wooden guesthouse with valley views.

Hotel range: Riverside guesthouses in Kasol INR 800-2,000. Tosh wooden cabins INR 1,000-2,500. Mid-range boutique places INR 3,000-5,000.

Drive from Delhi: 12 to 14 hours by car or overnight bus to Bhuntar then a shared cab onward.

Best months: April to June and September to mid-November.

5. Dalhousie , Old Hill Station, Less Crowded

Dalhousie is the Shimla you wished Shimla still was. It's built around five small hills with colonial bungalows, churches, and pine walks, and stays quieter because it's harder to reach. And works best as a slow two-night stop.

Top three things I do here:
1. Walk Subhash Baoli and the Garam Sadak / Thandi Sadak loop - free, 90 minutes.
2. Visit St John's Church and St Francis Church for the wooden interiors.
3. Day-trip to Khajjiar (next on this list).

Hotel range: Budget rooms INR 1,000-2,000. Mid-range hotels with hill views INR 2,500-4,500. Heritage colonial bungalows INR 6,000-10,000.

Drive from Delhi: 10 to 12 hours by car. HRTC bus INR 800-1,300.

Best months: March to June and October to November.

6. Khajjiar - The Saucer-Shaped Meadow

Khajjiar is technically a day trip from Dalhousie (about an hour's drive), but spending a night changes the experience. The meadow is a flat green saucer ringed by deodar forest with a small lake in the middle. Mornings before the day-trippers arrive are the reason to stay overnight.

Top three things I do here:
1. Walk the meadow perimeter at 7 a.m. before tourist buses arrive.
2. Pony ride around the lake - INR 200-400.
3. Eat parathas at the dhabas on the meadow edge - INR 80-150.

Hotel range: HPTDC Hotel Devdar and similar INR 2,500-4,500. Few private cottages INR 3,500-6,000.

Drive from Delhi: 11 to 13 hours, usually via Dalhousie.

Best months: April to June and September to October.

7. Bir Billing , Paragliding Capital

Bir is the launch point for some of the best paragliding in the country. Billing is the takeoff at 2,400 metres, Bir is the landing site below. Even without flying, the Tibetan colony, Chowgan cafes, and deodar forests around Sherabling make it worth two nights.

Top three things I do here:
1. Tandem paragliding flight . 20 to 30 minutes airtime, INR 2,500-3,500, video extra INR 800-1,200.
2. Visit Sherabling Monastery, 30 minutes away.
3. Cafe-hop around Chowgan - Avva's, July Cafe, 4tables.

Hotel range: Hostel beds INR 600-900. Cottage stays INR 1,800-3,500. Boutique forest stays INR 4,500-7,500.

Drive from Delhi: 11 to 12 hours direct.

Best months: Mid-September to mid-November is prime paragliding season. April to June also flies but with weaker thermals.

8. Kufri - Family Snow Day From Shimla

I don't love Kufri the way I love other entries here, but it earns a spot as the easiest snow access for families with kids or older parents. It sits 16 km from Shimla on a paved road. Plus peak winter is a zoo, but a weekday in late February or early March works.

Top three things I do here:
1. Walk to Mahasu peak viewpoint , pony INR 500-800 or hike free.
2. Visit Himalayan Nature Park . Entry INR 50.
3. Snow tubing or sled rides in winter , INR 200-500 a session.

Hotel range: Budget rooms INR 1,500-2,500. Mid-range INR 3,000-5,000. Most people stay in Shimla and day-trip.

Drive from Delhi: 8 to 9 hours via Shimla.

Best months: Late December to early March for snow. April to June for greenery.

9. Manikaran - Hot Springs and Gurudwara

Manikaran is 35 minutes beyond Kasol in the Parvati valley, and the headline is the hot spring complex inside the gurudwara. The langar is famous because the rice and dal are cooked in the natural hot spring water. Costs nothing to eat.

Top three things I do here:
1. Eat langar at Sri Manikaran Sahib - donation only, all day.
2. Soak in the hot springs (separate sections for men and women) - included with the gurudwara visit.
3. Cross the iron bridge and walk the bazaar for Kashmiri shawls.

Hotel range: Basic dharamshala rooms INR 500-1,000. Private guesthouses INR 1,200-2,500.

Drive from Delhi: 13 to 14 hours, almost always via Bhuntar then Kasol.

Best months: April to June and September to mid-November.

10. Spiti Valley , High-Altitude Cold Desert

Spiti is the trip I save for a second or third Himachal visit, not the first. Roads are rough, elevation is real (Komic and Hikkim sit above 4,500 metres), and the season is short . June to mid-September because the Kunzum and Rohtang passes are snowed in the rest of the year. Once you're in, Key Monastery, Chandratal lake, and the Hikkim post office feel like nowhere else in India.

Top three things I do here:
1. Stay a night at Key Monastery guesthouse for morning prayers.
2. Camp at Chandratal lake (June-September) , tents INR 1,500-3,000 including meals.
3. Send a postcard from Hikkim , world's highest post office at 4,400 metres.

Hotel range: Homestays in Kaza, Tabo, Kibber INR 800-1,800 with meals included. Heritage Tabo Monastery guesthouse INR 1,500-2,500.

Drive from Delhi: Two days minimum. Usually Delhi to Shimla day one (8 hours), Shimla to Kalpa or Sangla day two (8 hours), then Kalpa to Kaza day three (7 hours).

Best months: Mid-June to mid-September only, unless you've winter Spiti experience.

For altitude-acclimatisation context that translates well to Spiti, my Leh-Ladakh 6 to 7-day guide has the AMS notes I rely on.

11. Lahaul Valley , The Other Side of Rohtang

Lahaul opens the moment you cross Atal Tunnel from Manali, and has become much more accessible since the tunnel opened in 2020. Earlier you needed Rohtang to be open, June to September only. Now Lahaul is reachable almost year-round, though Keylong and beyond can still snow up. Sissu, Jispa, and Keylong are the main bases.

Top three things I do here:
1. Drive through Atal Tunnel to Sissu - day-trip from Manali, taxi INR 4,000-6,000.
2. Stay overnight at Jispa beside the Bhaga river.
3. Visit Trilokinath temple near Udaipur on a third day.

Hotel range: Sissu homestays INR 1,200-2,500. Jispa riverside camps INR 2,000-4,000. Keylong PWD rest house INR 1,500-2,500.

Drive from Delhi: 14 to 15 hours, usually broken at Manali.

Best months: June to October. Atal Tunnel keeps Sissu and Koksar accessible most of the year, but the wider valley needs summer.

12. Tirthan Valley , The Quietest One

Tirthan is what I save for repeat visitors who want to skip crowds entirely. It sits at the edge of Great Himalayan National Park (a UNESCO site), and the whole valley has maybe a dozen homestays over 30 km. No nightlife, the road past Aut tunnel narrows to a lane and a half, and that's the point. My cheap and quiet Indian cities list pairs well with Tirthan.

Top three things I do here:
1. Trout fishing with a local permit - INR 500 per day plus rod hire INR 200.
2. Walk into Great Himalayan National Park from Gushaini - entry INR 50, guide INR 800-1,500.
3. Sit on a homestay verandah and read a book. That's genuinely the agenda.

Hotel range: Riverside homestays INR 1,500-3,000 with home-cooked meals. Boutique forest stays INR 4,000-7,500.

Drive from Delhi: 11 to 12 hours via Mandi and Aut tunnel.

Best months: April to June and September to November. Closed-feeling in winter due to thin road traffic.

Getting There - HRTC Buses From Delhi

The Himachal Road Transport Corporation runs the most reliable overnight service from ISBT Kashmere Gate. Sleeper Volvo coaches to Manali, Dharamshala, Shimla, and Dalhousie cost INR 600 to 1,500 depending on class and date. And booking opens 30 days ahead on the HRTC online portal, and weekend departures sell out fast in May, June, and October peak. The safety record is genuinely better than the unmarked private operators around Majnu Ka Tila.

A self-drive car from Delhi runs INR 2,500-4,500 per day plus fuel, but mountain driving , narrow lanes, altitude, sudden goat traffic - isn't for first-time hill drivers. I usually take a bus in and a taxi inside the state.

A Seven-Day Route I Actually Use

The route I send first-time visitors with one week and a fair sample in mind:

  • Day 1 (overnight): Delhi to Manali on the HRTC Volvo, 11 hours, arrive 7 a.m.
  • Day 2-4 (Manali, 3 nights): Old Manali day one, Solang paragliding day two, Atal Tunnel and Sissu day three.
  • Day 5-6 (Kasol, 2 nights): Manali to Kasol via Bhuntar, 4 hours. Chalal trail, day-trip to Manikaran.
  • Day 7 (Bir, 1 night): Kasol to Bir, 5 hours. Tandem paragliding in the afternoon if winds allow.
  • Day 8 (Dharamshala, 1 night): Bir to Dharamshala, 90 minutes. Bhagsu waterfall, dinner at Lung Ta.
  • Day 9 (return): Overnight HRTC Volvo Dharamshala to Delhi, 11 hours.

That covers four destinations across two clusters with no single drive over five hours. To slow it down, drop Bir and add a third night somewhere. But my budget destinations in India list covers cheaper alternatives outside the hills, and the low-budget India places guide shows which states stretch INR best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need an Inner Line Permit for Spiti?
Indians don't need an ILP for the Shimla-Kinnaur-Spiti route, but you do for the restricted areas near the Tibet border like the Nako-Chango stretch. Issued free at the SDM office in Reckong Peo or Kaza, takes about an hour, needs two passport photos and an ID copy. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit through a registered travel agent in Shimla or Reckong Peo.

Q: How real is altitude sickness in Spiti and Lahaul?
Real enough to take seriously. Komic, Hikkim, and Kunzum Pass sit at 4,400 to 4,590 metres, and AMS hits people who go up too fast from Manali. Ascend via Shimla-Kinnaur-Kalpa-Nako so your body has three days to acclimatise. From Manali side, sleep at Sissu or Jispa the first night. Carry Diamox (consult your doctor), drink three to four litres of water daily, skip alcohol the first two days.

Q: What about monsoon road closures?
July and August are landslide season, worst on the Kullu-Manali highway around Mandi and the Chandigarh-Shimla NH-5. Closures from a few hours to two days are normal. Build buffer days and check the Himachal Tourism site and HRTC notices before you leave. Spiti and Lahaul sit in the rain shadow, drier in summer, but the approach roads pass through monsoon zones.

Q: HRTC bus or private taxi , what should I pick?
HRTC for the Delhi-to-state leg, almost always. Sleeper Volvos are clean, drivers union-licensed, tickets INR 600-1,500. Inside Himachal, taxis make sense for tight itineraries , Bhuntar airport to Manali INR 1,800, day trips INR 3,500-6,500. For Spiti and Lahaul, shared taxis from Manali or Shimla run INR 1,200-2,500 per seat.

Q: Will my mobile network work everywhere?
Jio and Airtel work in Manali, Shimla, Dharamshala, Kasol, Bir, and Dalhousie. BSNL is the only network reliable in Spiti, Lahaul, and parts of Kinnaur - east of Kalpa, get a BSNL postpaid SIM in advance because prepaid doesn't activate at altitude the same way. Tirthan has spotty Jio at best.

Q: Is Himachal good for solo female travellers?
Yes, broadly. Manali, Kasol, Bir, Dharamshala, and Tirthan have established backpacker scenes with female-friendly hostels, and the state has a low petty-crime rate. Standard precautions apply - share live location, avoid late-night taxi rides on remote roads, prefer reviewed homestays over walk-ins.

Q: When does Rohtang Pass open and close each year?
Rohtang typically opens around 10 May and closes around 15 November, depending on snowfall. Atal Tunnel under Rohtang is open year-round (though Keylong beyond Sissu still closes in heavy winter). Rohtang access needs an online permit from rohtangpermits.nic.in, INR 550 per vehicle, Tuesdays closed for maintenance.

Q: How does Himachal compare to other Indian destinations for the same dates?
For April-June, Himachal beats most of the country because plains are 40°C+ and hills sit at 18-28°C. For September-November, trekking and clear-sky photography are at their best. For February, send people to Kerala or Goa , see my February India destinations guide and the Kerala season guide.

Final Notes Before You Book

Book return transport before your first hotel , peak weekend Volvos from Manali and Dharamshala sell out two to three weeks ahead in May, June, and October. Carry INR 5,000 cash because ATMs in Kasol, Tirthan, and the Spiti circuit run dry routinely. Don't plan more than two destinations in three days . You'll spend the trip on the road instead of in the place. And if anyone says Rohtang is open in March, they're either lying or talking about Atal Tunnel.

For background, the Himachal Pradesh Wikipedia page is reasonably current, the Wikivoyage Himachal article has practical notes, and the HPTDC official site is the place to book government rest houses in Khajjiar, Keylong, and Sangla where private options are thin.

Pick a cluster, book HRTC ahead, leave room in the schedule.
