Best Family Holiday Destinations in South India

I started taking my niece and nephew on South India trips when they were six and four. They're now twelve and ten, and we've done some version of this circuit every winter break. The south is, in my opinion, the easiest part of India to travel with kids , distances are reasonable, hotels have working pools, food is mild enough for fussy eaters, and the weather between October and March stays around 18 to 28 degrees.

This piece walks through twelve places I keep going back to with family, with real prices from 2024 and 2025 trips and the kid-friendly properties we've actually stayed at. For overlap, see my seven-day Kerala itinerary for travellers and the season guide for Kerala.

1. Kerala Backwaters , Alleppey Houseboat

Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the place I send first-time families to. And you board a private kettuvallam houseboat around noon, and it cruises Vembanad lake and narrow canals while a cook prepares karimeen fish and rice on board. Kids spend the afternoon spotting kingfishers and water buffalo.

A one-bedroom AC houseboat for two adults and two kids ran me INR 18,500 last December for a 22-hour overnight (noon check-in to 9 a.m. drop-off). A premium two-bedroom upper-deck boat was INR 31,800. Plus all meals included. Book through Kerala Tourism approved operators only.

For a hotel base, Coconut Lagoon at Kumarakom (CGH Earth) is my pick . Rooms from INR 19,500 a night, reached by their own boat from a jetty 12 km away. Kids loved the butterfly garden and the resident water buffalo. Alleppey is two hours by road from Kochi airport. The official portal is kerala.gov.in.

2. Munnar - Tea Hills, Chocolate Factory and Eravikulam

Munnar sits at 1,600 metres in Idukki district, and the four-hour drive up from Kochi climbs past Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls. January 2025 had morning fog the kids called dragon breath.

Eravikulam National Park, 13 km from town, is the only place to see the Nilgiri tahr, a stocky mountain goat that walks right up to the path. Entry is INR 200 per adult, INR 65 per child (5 to 12), plus a mandatory shuttle bus at INR 90. The park closes February and most of March for tahr calving , check the Kerala Forest Department site first.

The Munnar Chocolate Factory on Mattupetty Road lets kids taste warm samples; a 200g slab is INR 280. Tea Museum entry (Tata-run) is INR 110 adult, INR 65 child. Spice Tree Munnar has family suites at INR 12,000 a night. Stay November to February. Pack jackets - January nights drop to 8 degrees.

3. Wayanad , Edakkal Caves, Kuruva Island and Banasura

Wayanad is lush north Kerala, six hours from Bangalore or four from Kozhikode. The Edakkal Caves have rock carvings dated to around 6,000 BCE. The catch , there's a one-kilometre uphill climb on rough steps. My nephew managed it at seven; toddlers need to be carried part of it. Entry INR 50 per person plus camera fee.

Kuruva Island is a 950-acre river delta reached by bamboo raft. Closed June to mid-October. Entry INR 90 per adult, raft included. And banasura Sagar, India's largest earthen dam, charges INR 600 for a 30-minute speedboat ride for a family of four.

Vythiri Resort, in the rainforest 14 km from Kalpetta, has tree-house family rooms at INR 22,000 a night. Heated pool, free guided nature walks for kids.

4. Coorg , Abbey Falls, Dubare Elephants and Coffee

Coorg (Kodagu) is in Karnataka, 5.5 hours from Bangalore. Madikeri sits at 1,200 metres. October to February is the cleanest season . Coffee bushes flower in November and the smell across the hills is something the kids still talk about.

Abbey Falls, 8 km from Madikeri, drops 21 metres; the iron bridge gives a clear view. Entry INR 30 adult, free under 10. Dubare Elephant Camp on the Kaveri river is a working Forest Department camp. Morning interaction (9 to 11 a.m.) is INR 750 adult, INR 380 child, including feeding and bath time. But madikeri Fort and Raja's Seat viewpoint round out a day in town.

Orange County Coorg, near Siddapur, has family villas at INR 28,500 a night including breakfast, with a kids' club, plantation walks and a pet farm. Bookings open six months ahead and fill for Christmas.

5. Mysore - Palace, Chamundi Hill and Brindavan

Mysore (Mysuru) is three hours by train or road from Bangalore. Mysore Palace, the Wadiyar dynasty residence, is lit by 97,000 bulbs every Sunday evening (7 to 7.45 p.m.) and during Dasara. Entry INR 70 adult, INR 30 child, free under 10. So photography inside not allowed; lockers available.

Chamundi Hill, 13 km out, has 1,008 steps; most families drive up. The Nandi statue at step 700 is the halfway photo. KRS Dam and the Brindavan Gardens behind it run a musical fountain at 7 p.m. , INR 50 adult, INR 20 child.

Radisson Blu Plaza Mysore has family rooms at INR 11,500. The Royal Orchid Metropole (1920s heritage) is INR 9,800, walking distance from the palace.

6. Bangalore , Innovative Film City, Wonderla, Cubbon, Bannerghatta

Bangalore is a strong family base , airport connections and mild year-round weather. Innovative Film City on Mysore Road has a wax museum, mirror maze, dinosaur park and a Wild West town; combo ticket INR 999 adult, INR 799 child (under 12). Full-day visit. Wonderla, 28 km out, has 60+ rides and a wave pool , INR 1,499 adult, INR 1,199 kid on weekdays, higher weekends.

Bannerghatta Biological Park has a 20-minute lion and tiger safari in a caged bus - INR 400 adult, INR 250 child, plus INR 80 entry. Cubbon Park is free and its toy train runs Tuesday-Sunday at INR 30 a ride. See family places to visit in and around Bangalore.

7. Mahabaleshwar , Strawberry Farms and Pratapgad

Mahabaleshwar is technically Maharashtra but sits on the same Sahyadri range and is on the south India circuit. The hill station is at 1,353 metres, known for strawberries December to February.

Mapro Garden charges INR 350 a kilo for strawberry picking; the cafe's strawberry-and-cream is INR 220. Pratapgad Fort, 24 km away, has a steep 30-minute climb , the Konkan coast view is the reward.

Le Meridien Mahabaleshwar has family suites at INR 16,800 a night. The MTDC resort is INR 4,500 for budget. Venna Lake paddle boats are INR 250 for 30 minutes.

8. Pondicherry , French Quarter, Auroville and Beaches

Pondicherry (Puducherry) is a former French colony on the Tamil Nadu coast, three hours south of Chennai. The French Quarter, called White Town, is a grid of mustard-yellow walls and bougainvillea-lined lanes. We rented bicycles for INR 100 a day from a shop on Rue Suffren and the kids could keep up , the streets are flat and traffic is calmer than most Indian cities.

Auroville, 12 km north, is the experimental township founded in 1968. Visitors can't enter the Matrimandir interior without a prior booking, but the viewing point is open daily. Entry is free, but you need to register at the visitor centre. Paradise Beach is reached only by a 20-minute boat ride from Chunnambar Boat House . INR 250 per adult, INR 200 per child, return ferry included.

We stayed at Palais de Mahe (CGH Earth) in White Town. But family rooms were INR 14,200 a night. Le Pondy, on the beach 10 km out, has a kids pool and is INR 11,500 a night. For day trips around the area, see two-day trip destinations in Tamil Nadu.

9. Ooty , Toy Train, Boating and Doddabetta

Ooty (Udhagamandalam) is a Tamil Nadu hill station at 2,240 metres. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO heritage line, runs from Mettupalayam at the foothills to Ooty over five hours via Coonoor. The full trip is INR 270 per adult in first class and INR 145 in second; kids 5 to 12 are half. Booking opens 120 days ahead on IRCTC and weekends fill within minutes , book early.

Ooty Lake has pedal boats at INR 220 for 30 minutes (two-seater) and a four-seater rowboat at INR 380. Doddabetta, the highest peak in the Nilgiris at 2,637 metres, is a 10 km drive from town. Entry is INR 12, telescope use INR 18.

We've used Hayfield Resort in Coonoor (20 km from Ooty proper, less crowded, better gardens) for two trips. Family cottages were INR 13,500 a night including breakfast and a campfire on request. April mornings can hit 4 degrees so pack accordingly.

10. Kodaikanal - Coaker's Walk, Bryant Park, Pillar Rocks

Kodaikanal sits at 2,100 metres in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu. The drive from Madurai airport is 3.5 hours and the last 60 km is winding ghat road - give kids prone to motion sickness a tablet 30 minutes before.

Coaker's Walk is a one-kilometre paved path along the cliff edge, fenced and stroller-friendly. Entry is INR 10 per person. Bryant Park, named after a British forest officer, charges INR 30 entry and has a horticultural setup the kids enjoyed feeding-the-koi at (fish food is INR 20). Pillar Rocks, 7 km out, are three vertical granite columns; the viewpoint has a small mist garden.

The Carlton Kodaikanal is the heritage option - family suites are INR 17,800. Villa Retreat, on the lake side, is INR 9,500 with a smaller pool. Boating on Kodaikanal Lake is INR 280 for a pedal boat, 30 minutes. Plus october to early March is best; July sees heavy fog and limited views.

11. Mahabalipuram , Shore Temple, Five Rathas and Crocodile Bank

Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Tamil Nadu coast, 60 km south of Chennai. And the Pallava-era Shore Temple, built around 700 CE, is the standout monument. ASI entry is INR 40 for Indian adults, free for children under 15. The Five Rathas (Pancha Rathas) are monolithic rock-cut chariots a short walk away - same ticket covers both.

Arjuna's Penance, a 27-metre bas-relief carved into a single granite face, is in the open and free to visit. The beach itself is good for paddling but the surf is strong - older kids only. The Madras Crocodile Bank, 14 km north on the ECR, has 17 species of crocodiles and is home to the largest captive saltwater croc in India. Entry is INR 60 for adults, INR 25 for kids, plus a small camera fee.

We've stayed at Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay (family villa with private pool, INR 24,000) and InterContinental Mahabalipuram Resort (INR 18,500 family suite). But for more coast options, see top beaches in South India for first-time visitors. Tamil Nadu's official tourism site, tamilnadutourism.tn.gov.in, lists certified guides for the monument complex (INR 800 for two hours).

12. Hampi - UNESCO Ruins, Bouldering and Anegundi

Hampi is in north Karnataka and is the only UNESCO site on this list that doubles as a kid-friendly geology playground. The site is the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara empire (1336 to 1565 CE). What makes it work for families is the landscape - giant pink-orange granite boulders that look like a giant set them down, and kids can climb them safely under supervision.

Virupaksha Temple is a working temple at the river end and free to enter (camera fee INR 50). Vittala Temple, with the famous stone chariot, is INR 40 entry; the musical pillars no longer ring (preservation), but the kids enjoyed counting them. Hampi Bazaar runs along the temple street.

A coracle ride across the Tungabhadra to Anegundi village, the older capital, is INR 150 per person and feels like a small adventure. Hire a local guide for INR 1,000 a half-day - the ruins make far more sense with one.

Evolve Back Hampi (formerly Orange County) has family villas at INR 32,000 a night, the most kid-friendly option in the area. Hampi's Boulders, on the river, is INR 18,000 with boat-only access. October to February is the only sensible season; April to June is too hot for kids to walk the ruins. The closest airport is Hubli (143 km) or the new Vidyanagar (40 km).

When to Travel . A Quick Calendar

October to March is the peak family season for almost every spot above. Summer (April to mid-June) works only for the hill stations , Ooty, Kodaikanal, Coorg, Munnar, Wayanad, Mahabaleshwar , and even those get crowded. But the southwest monsoon (June through September) waterlogs Kerala and coastal Karnataka and shuts down boating and several treks; Tamil Nadu's east coast gets its own monsoon in October to early December.

For broader cross-India ideas, see family tour destinations in India. If you're weighing south India against an overseas trip, my comparison the best Asian country for an Indian family vacation covers the trade-offs.

How I Plan a Two-Week South India Family Trip

A version that has worked twice for us , Bangalore (2 nights) - Mysore (2) , Coorg (3) , Wayanad (2) , Munnar (2) . Alleppey houseboat (1) - Kochi airport. So that's 12 nights, all by car or pre-booked taxi (INR 16 a km for a Toyota Innova in Karnataka and Kerala in 2025 rates). Total cost for a family of four came to INR 2.1 lakh, including flights to Bangalore from Mumbai and out of Kochi.

If your kids are under five, swap Wayanad and Munnar for one extra night at Coorg , fewer drives, fewer climbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which of these destinations work for toddlers (under 3)?
Alleppey houseboats, Coorg resorts, Mysore (city-based), Bangalore and Pondicherry are the easiest. Stick to ground-floor rooms and avoid Hampi, Edakkal Caves, Pratapgad and the toy train (it's a long ride). Prefer resorts with pediatrician-on-call (Coconut Lagoon, Orange County and the Radisson properties have this).

Are these places fine during Indian school holidays (May-June and December)?
December and Christmas week are peak . Book three months out and expect 25 to 40% surcharges. May and June are off-season for the plains but peak for hill stations; Ooty, Kodaikanal and Munnar fill up. For coast and backwaters, May to early June is too hot and humid (35 to 38 degrees with high humidity).

What about Onam in August-September? Should we plan around it?
Onam (Kerala's harvest festival, falls late August to mid-September) is culturally beautiful . Sadya feasts, snake boat races at Aranmula. But it overlaps with monsoon. If your kids are 8+ and you've rain gear, a 4-day Kochi-Alleppey trip during Onam is worth it. Younger kids will be miserable in the rain and trapped indoors.

Is monsoon (June-September) safe for travel with kids?
Coastal Tamil Nadu and inland Karnataka (Hampi, Mysore, Bangalore) stay manageable with 1 to 2 wet days per week. Kerala and Wayanad get heavy rain and landslide risk on ghat roads , avoid with kids. Mahabaleshwar gets fog so thick you can't see the next car. If you must travel, Bangalore-Mysore-Coorg in early June (just before peak monsoon) is the safest.

Do we need to worry about malaria or dengue?
Malaria risk is low across the south India tourist belt but not zero. Mosquito repellent (DEET 20% or picaridin) is essential at dusk in Wayanad, Hampi and Bannerghatta. Dengue cases peak in late monsoon (September-October) in Bangalore and Chennai , full sleeves at sunset, mosquito plug-ins in hotel rooms. Skip standing water near accommodation. No vaccinations are required for Indian travellers.

Are the AC trains comfortable enough for an overnight family trip?
Yes - third AC (3A) is the standard family choice, with curtained berths, clean linen and charging points. Two AC (2A) gives more space and is worth the upgrade for kids who don't sleep well. The Bangalore-Mysore Shatabdi (chair car, AC) is excellent for a 3-hour day trip. Avoid sleeper class (non-AC) with kids , overcrowding and limited toilets. Book through IRCTC at least 60 days out for the best berths.

What about food allergies and fussy eaters?
South Indian breakfast is dosa, idli and uttapam , universally kid-approved and gluten-free if avoiding wheat. Coconut and curry leaves are everywhere; ask hotel kitchens to skip both for nut-allergic kids. All major resorts (Orange County, Coconut Lagoon, Radisson chain) have separate kid menus with pasta, sandwiches and french fries. Bottled water only , INR 20 a litre is the standard rate.

How do we handle long road trips without cranky kids?
Break drives into 2-hour segments and stop at MTDC, KSTDC or KTDC government rest houses for clean toilets and snacks. Download offline videos before - mountain passes have patchy 4G. Book a Toyota Innova or Crysta (INR 14 to 18 per km in 2025) over a sedan; the higher seating reduces motion sickness. Pack ginger candies and oral rehydration salts. Avoid late-evening drives on ghat sections . Visibility drops and animal crossings happen.

Wider Reading

For background context on the region, see the Wikipedia page on South India and the Wikivoyage South India travel guide. Both are kept current by volunteer editors and useful for high-level facts. Tamil Nadu's official tourism site is tamilnadutourism.tn.gov.in and Kerala's is kerala.gov.in.

If you do one trip from this list, make it the Bangalore-Mysore-Coorg loop . It's the lowest-effort introduction to the region. But if you want one signature experience that the kids will tell their classmates about, it's the Alleppey houseboat overnight. We've done it three times and it still feels new every winter.
