Best Hill Stations in India for Summer Vacations

I've been climbing into the hills every summer since I was a kid in Andhra, when my parents hauled me out of 44 degree Vijayawada heat onto a Volvo bus to Ooty. Plus over the last seven summers I've been to fourteen Indian hill stations on a real budget. This guide is what I wish someone had handed me the first time, region by region.

Why April to June Is the Window, and When to Actually Go

April through June is the summer-escape window because the plains hit 42 to 47 degrees Celsius while the Himalayas and Western Ghats sit at 14 to 26. The catch: everyone else figured this out too.

May 20 to June 30 is the worst stretch for crowds. School summer holidays run through May, family bookings double, and you'll see traffic jams on the road into Manali at 11 pm. A room I paid INR 2,400 for in late March cost INR 6,800 the same week in June.

If you can swing it, go in mid-March to mid-April or the first week of July when the school term restarts. Late April is my sweet spot: warm enough that high passes are open, cool enough that Munnar is still misty. For month-by-month thinking, see the best India destinations to visit in February in one week.

Manali: My Default Pick

Manali is what I send first-timers to. The Beas roars through town, deodars hang over Old Manali, and within 14 km you can be sledding in Solang Valley at 2,560 m. But from Delhi the cheapest reliable way is the HRTC Volvo AC sleeper from Kashmiri Gate at around INR 1,500, leaving 5 pm and pulling into Manali by 7 am.

I stay in Old Manali at a guesthouse like Drifters Inn. Doubles in late April run INR 1,800 to 2,500. Mid-tier Vashisht hotels with hot springs sit at INR 3,500 to 5,500. And resorts push INR 8,000 to 15,000. Solang paragliding is INR 2,500 to 3,500 for a 15-minute tandem ride. For Atal Tunnel and Sissu in Lahaul, hire a Sumo from Mall Road, INR 4,500 round trip. Longer route piece: best destinations in Himachal Pradesh for travelers.

Shimla and the Toy Train From Kalka

Shimla is the heritage stop: Christ Church on the Ridge, Jakhoo Temple at 2,455 m with its 33 m Hanuman statue. The smart way in is the Vande Bharat from New Delhi to Kalka, four hours, around INR 800 in chair car, then the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge toy train. First Class on the Shivalik Deluxe Express is INR 905, takes about 5 hours through 102 tunnels. Plus book 30 days ahead on IRCTC.

Hotels on the Mall like Clarkes run INR 6,500 to 11,000. I usually book Lower Bazaar at INR 2,200 to 3,500. Channa bhatura at Sita Ram and Sons is INR 120 a plate. Day trips: Kufri (16 km), Naldehra golf course, Chail at 45 km. For a weeklong itinerary, see my 5n6d birthday trip best visiting place in Himachal Pradesh post.

Mussoorie: The Easy Weekend From Delhi

Mussoorie is 290 km from Delhi, about 7 hours by road via Dehradun. The Nanda Devi Express to Dehradun (INR 350 sleeper, INR 1,500 chair car) plus a INR 800 to 1,200 cab up the 33 km hill is what most weekend travelers pick.

The town sits at 2,005 m. Camel's Back Road is a flat 3 km loop I walk every evening; the sunset over the Doon Valley is worth the trip alone. Gun Hill cable car is INR 150 round trip. Skip Kempty Falls in May, go to Jharipani instead. Stays: Cloud End Forest Resort INR 6,500 to 9,000, Hotel Padmini Nivas INR 3,500 to 5,000, Mall Road budget rooms from INR 1,500. Char Dukan in Landour does bun-omelette and ginger-lemon-honey tea, INR 220 combo.

Nainital and the Kumaon Lakes

Nainital is built around a 1,400 m glacial lake shaped like an eye. The Naina Devi temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. From Delhi: Ranikhet Express overnight to Kathgodam (INR 380 sleeper, INR 1,250 3AC), then a shared cab the last 35 km up for INR 250 a seat or INR 1,500 reserved.

Boating on Naini Lake is INR 210 for 30 minutes. The ropeway to Snow View is INR 300 round trip. Lake stays go from INR 2,800 to INR 12,000. Plus i prefer Sattal or Bhimtal, 22 to 26 km out, for forest stays in the INR 4,000 to 6,500 range. Day trips: Mukteshwar (51 km), Kainchi Dham (17 km, the Neem Karoli Baba site Steve Jobs visited in 1974).

McLeodganj and Dharamshala

McLeodganj sits at 2,082 m above Dharamshala, where the Dalai Lama has lived since 1959. The Tsuglagkhang complex is open 9 am to 7 pm, no entry fee. Public teachings require registering with passport details a week ahead at the Branch Security Office, free.

Get there via Pathankot: Jammu Mail from Delhi (INR 410 sleeper, INR 1,400 3AC, 9 hours) plus a INR 1,800 taxi for the 90 km onward. Or HRTC Volvo Delhi-Dharamshala direct, INR 1,200 to 1,600.

Stay in upper Bhagsu or Dharamkot for INR 1,500 to 3,000 doubles, or splurge on Norbu House at INR 4,500 to 6,500. Eat thukpa at Lung Ta on Jogibara Road, INR 350. The Triund trek (9 km, 4 to 5 hours, 2,875 m) is the day hike everyone does. INR 100 forest entry, carry 2 L of water.

Auli: Skiing in May, Trekking in June

Auli at 2,800 m in Chamoli has India's longest cable car (4 km from Joshimath) and a 3 km ski slope. April still has skiable snow on upper slopes; rentals run INR 1,500 a day for skis, boots, and a 1-hour instructor session. By late May the snow is gone and alpine meadows green up.

From Delhi: train or flight to Dehradun, then a 9-hour drive (270 km) via Rishikesh and Joshimath. A reserved Innova for 4 days costs INR 18,000 to 22,000. But gMVN runs basic hostels for INR 1,200 to 2,500. Cliff Top Club is the comfort option at INR 8,000 to 14,000. The Roopkund trek has been restricted since 2023 due to ASI excavation; the Kuari Pass trek (33 km, 4 days, max 4,264 m) is the legal alternative.

Kasauli: The Quiet Alternative

Kasauli is a small cantonment town at 1,927 m, 77 km from Chandigarh, with no honking horns (military rules), pine forest walks, and a sunset point at Monkey Point that earns its name. From Chandigarh, a cab is INR 2,500 for the 2-hour drive. HRTC bus from Kalka costs INR 95. Christ Church (1853) and the Kasauli Club anchor town. Stays: Hotel Ros Common INR 6,000 to 9,000, Baikunth Resort INR 5,500 to 7,500. No malls, no nightlife. That's the point. I bring books.

Lansdowne: The Cantonment Cousin

Lansdowne in Pauri Garhwal at 1,706 m is the Uttarakhand version of Kasauli. So from Delhi it's 270 km, 6 hours via Kotdwar. Trains to Kotdwar (Garhwal Express, INR 320 sleeper) and a INR 1,500 cab for the 41 km climb work for budget travelers. Tip-in-Top viewpoint, St. Mary's Church (1895), Bhulla Tal lake (boating INR 100), Tarkeshwar Mahadev at 38 km. Hotels limited by design: GMVN Tourist Rest House INR 1,800 to 3,000, Vinayak Mahal INR 4,000 with breakfast.

Darjeeling and the Tea Estates

Darjeeling sits at 2,042 m, with Kanchenjunga (8,586 m, the world's third-highest peak) visible at sunrise from Tiger Hill on clear mornings. Get there via Bagdogra airport (INR 5,000 to 8,000 from Kolkata) or NJP railway station (Vande Bharat from Howrah is INR 1,800 chair car, 7.5 hours). From either, a 3-hour shared jeep up costs INR 300 a seat, or INR 3,500 reserved.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (1881, UNESCO) runs the Joy Train, a 2-hour return loop to Ghum (highest railway station in India at 2,258 m). And diesel is INR 800, steam INR 1,600. Stays: Glenburn Tea Estate INR 25,000+ all-inclusive, Windamere (1839) at INR 12,000 to 18,000, Mayfair at INR 6,000 to 9,500. Don't miss tea tasting at Happy Valley (INR 250 entry), Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park with snow leopards, and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute museum.

Gangtok and the Sikkim Gompas

Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim at 1,650 m. Plus what sets it apart is the cleanliness, road discipline (almost no honking), and easy access to monasteries like Rumtek (24 km) and Enchey. For Tsomgo Lake (35 km) and Nathula Pass (54 km), Indian citizens need an inner-line permit, which the Sikkim Tourism office at MG Marg issues in 30 minutes for free with a passport-size photo and ID.

Bagdogra is the gateway, 124 km and 4 hours by shared cab (INR 350 a seat) or reserved Innova (INR 4,500). So stays: Mayfair Spa Resort INR 14,000 to 22,000, Summit Norling at INR 7,500 to 11,000, Sonam Delek at INR 3,500 to 5,500, hostels on Tibet Road at INR 700 to 1,200 a bed. Try momos at Taste of Tibet, INR 280 for a full meal.

Mahabaleshwar and Lonavala for Mumbai and Pune

Mahabaleshwar sits at 1,353 m in the Sahyadris, 263 km from Mumbai (5.5 hours by car) or 120 km from Pune. And the MSRTC Shivshahi from Mumbai is INR 600. Strawberry season is Feb to May; Mapro Garden sells strawberry-and-cream for INR 180.

Pratapgad Fort, where Shivaji killed Afzal Khan in 1659, is 24 km out. Cab there and back is INR 1,800. Hotels: Le Meridien at INR 11,000 to 18,000, Brightland at INR 6,000 to 9,500, MTDC Resort at INR 3,500 to 5,000.

Lonavala at 622 m is closer and lower, basically Mumbai's standard weekend. Trains from Mumbai CST on the Deccan Express are INR 90 in second sitting, 2.5 hours. But pune local trains are 1.5 hours, INR 30. Tiger's Leap, Bhushi Dam, Karla and Bhaja Buddhist caves (2nd century BCE, INR 25 entry), and chikki shopping at Maganlal cover most days. Stays from INR 1,800 budget to INR 8,000 mid-tier.

Munnar, Ooty, Kodaikanal, Coorg: The Southern Run

The Western Ghats give you four hill stations in a triangle from Bangalore to Kochi to Madurai, all between 1,200 and 2,300 m, green year-round.

Munnar in Idukki, Kerala is at 1,600 m. From Kochi airport it's 110 km, 4 hours by KSRTC bus (INR 220) or 3 hours reserved cab (INR 3,500). So eravikulam National Park (Nilgiri tahr, INR 200 entry plus INR 65 shuttle, closed Feb to March for calving) sits 13 km from town. Stays: Tea County KTDC at INR 6,500 to 9,500, Joy's Palace at INR 3,200 to 5,500, Chinnakanal homestays at INR 1,800 to 3,000. I go deeper in best 7-day Kerala itinerary for travelers and best hill stations to visit in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Ooty at 2,240 m is the Tamil Nadu classic. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam (UNESCO, 1908 rack-and-pinion) is INR 545 First Class, 4.5 hours, the only way I'll travel up. Coonoor 19 km below is quieter with better tea estates. But stays: Sterling Fern Hill INR 7,500 to 11,000, Hotel Lakeview INR 3,800 to 5,500, Coonoor homestays INR 2,500 to 4,500.

Kodaikanal at 2,133 m is the quieter cousin of Ooty. Coaker's Walk is a 1 km cliffside path with views over the Vaigai plains; entry INR 30, go at 6 am for cloud cover. Pillar Rocks and Guna Caves are 8 km out. And stays: Le Poshe at INR 5,500 to 8,500, Carlton at INR 9,500 to 14,000, Astoria budget at INR 1,800 to 2,800. From Madurai it's 120 km, 3.5 hours.

Coorg in Karnataka centers on Madikeri at 1,170 m, lower but compensating with thick coffee plantations. From Bangalore, 250 km and 6 hours by Volvo (INR 750). Abbey Falls, Raja's Seat (INR 10), Talacauvery, and the Tibetan settlement at Bylakuppe (Namdroling Monastery, free) cover most days. Coffee estate stays: Tata Plantation Trails INR 14,000 to 22,000 with meals, smaller homestays INR 2,500 to 4,500.

Practical Notes Before You Book

Book hotels 30 to 45 days ahead for May-June. I use MakeMyTrip and Booking.com side by side and call the property direct for a 10 to 15 percent discount. IRCTC opens 60 days in advance. For HRTC use hrtchp.com directly.

Driving: I've driven my own car to Mussoorie, Nainital, Lonavala, Ooty, and Coorg. So i would not drive to Manali, Auli, Gangtok, or Darjeeling: the last 100 km is narrow with no shoulders. Hire a local driver. Cash: Manali, Mussoorie, and Munnar have UPI everywhere, but Auli, Lansdowne, and Sikkim and Garhwal villages need INR 5,000 to 8,000 cash on hand.

FAQ

When do school summer holidays hit, and how badly does it spike prices?

Most CBSE and ICSE schools close from May 10 to June 25. Hotel rates double or triple during these six weeks. If you're not bound to school dates, travel April 1 to May 5 or July 5 to 25 for similar weather and 40 to 60 percent lower rates.

I am worried about altitude sickness. Should I be, for Auli or Sikkim?

For Auli at 2,800 m and Tsomgo Lake at 3,780 m, AMS is a real but manageable risk. Ascend gradually: spend a night in Joshimath (1,875 m) before Auli, and a night in Gangtok (1,650 m) before driving up to Tsomgo. Drink 3 to 4 L of water a day, skip alcohol for 48 hours, avoid heavy exertion on day one. Carry Diamox (250 mg twice daily, prescription needed, INR 80 a strip) if you've a history. Symptoms: headache, nausea, sleep disturbance. If those persist, descend.

Will the July monsoon ruin a hill station trip?

It depends. Mahabaleshwar, Lonavala, Munnar, and Coorg get 2,000 to 5,000 mm of monsoon rain between June 15 and September 15, and many roads close. Lonavala is beautiful in July with green ghats and full waterfalls, but pack rain gear. Manali, Shimla, and Mussoorie get 800 to 1,200 mm, lighter but with landslide risk. Darjeeling and Gangtok get mid-July leeches and are best avoided.

Do I need to worry about mosquitoes at hill stations?

Above 1,500 m, mosquito-borne disease risk is low. Manali, Shimla, Mussoorie, Auli, and Darjeeling are basically mosquito-free in May. Lower stations like Lonavala, Coorg, and parts of Munnar can have evening mosquitoes; carry Odomos. Dengue is a real risk in lower Maharashtra and Karnataka through monsoon, less so in summer dry weeks.

How is mobile network coverage?

Jio and Airtel cover town centers at all 16 stations on this list. Out on hikes (Triund, Kuari Pass, Dzongri), expect zero coverage. BSNL works in some remote Himachal valleys where Jio and Airtel don't. Download offline Google Maps before leaving the metro.

Should I drive my own car or take the train?

Drive yourself if you've hill driving experience, the destination is under 350 km, and you want flexibility for day trips. Take the train if the route has a Vande Bharat (Delhi-Kalka, Howrah-NJP), or you're going to Manali, Gangtok, or Darjeeling where the last leg is grueling. Hybrid works: train to the foot of the hill, reserve a local cab for the climb.

Is it safe for solo women travelers?

Yes for all 16 destinations on this list. McLeodganj, Manali, Munnar, Ooty, and Coorg have established solo female traveler scenes with women-only hostels (Zostel, The Hosteller, Moustache). But avoid arriving in any town after 10 pm by road; book day buses or arrive by 8 pm and pre-arrange pickups.

What should I pack that I might forget?

Layers: a fleece, a windbreaker, and a cotton T-shirt all in the same bag. But mornings are 10 C, afternoons 25 C. Sunscreen SPF 50, sunglasses, a wide-brim hat, lip balm. Trekking shoes if you plan any walks. A reusable water bottle, a first-aid kit with paracetamol and Imodium, and a power bank because hotel sockets in old hill towns are unreliable.

Closing Notes

The hills have been my reset every summer for as long as I can remember. Pick one cluster, go for at least four nights, and don't chain three hill stations into a single week. A week in Manali beats five days bouncing Manali-Shimla-Mussoorie. I've made that mistake.
