Best India Destinations to Visit in February in One Week

Last updated: April 2026 · 13 min read

I've spent four straight Februaries travelling around India , Rajasthan twice, Kerala once, Andaman in 2023, and a Mumbai-Aurangabad-Hampi loop in 2024. February is the one month I tell friends to actually book flights for. The monsoon is long gone, the cold wave that bothers north India in December has loosened, and the summer heat that turns Delhi into a furnace from late March is still weeks away. Hotels aren't at peak Diwali or New Year prices, trains run on time, and you can plan an outdoor day without checking five weather apps.

This guide covers nine 7-day itineraries, real INR budgets I've actually paid, weather data by region, the Holi 2026 timing question (March 4), and the regions to avoid. If you've one week and a flight already booked, this is how I would spend it.

TL;DR: My top seven 7-day February picks, in rough order: Rajasthan Golden Triangle (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur-Udaipur), Kerala backwaters plus Munnar tea hills, Andaman Havelock and Neil islands, Goa plus Hampi combo, Khajuraho-Orchha-Gwalior heritage loop, Varanasi plus Bodhgaya pilgrimage circuit, and Mumbai plus Aurangabad for Ajanta-Ellora. Add Rann of Kutch and a wildlife trip if you've flex on dates. Skip the Himalayas, Ladakh, Sikkim, and most of the Northeast - it's still too cold and several roads remain closed.

Why February is India's Prime Travel Month

Short answer: dry weather, cool nights, shoulder pricing. The longer version is layered.

In the south - Kerala, Karnataka coast, Goa, Andaman , humidity is at its lowest of the year and sea conditions are calm. You'll sweat at midday but mornings and evenings are genuinely pleasant.

In the north and west - Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra, Madhya Pradesh , the bone-cold mornings of December back off in the second week of February. Day temperatures climb to 22 to 26 degrees, sweater-weather perfect for fort walking. So smog over Delhi clears versus November, and you can actually see the Taj Mahal at sunrise without haze.

Two windows where February has zero competition: desert tourism (Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Rann of Kutch - too hot every other month), and tiger safari season (Ranthambore, Tadoba, Pench , peak sighting probability before April heat).

February Weather by Region . What to Actually Pack

I keep a notebook of what I wore where. Here are the ranges I've logged:

  • Delhi: 8 to 22 degrees Celsius. Mornings are cold, afternoons mild, nights brisk. Pack a fleece and a light jacket.
  • Mumbai: 18 to 32 degrees. T-shirt weather all day. A light shawl for late dinners on Marine Drive.
  • Bangalore: 16 to 29 degrees. Famous for being pleasant, and February delivers.
  • Goa (both north and south): 22 to 32 degrees. Beach weather. Sea is swimmable, jellyfish are minimal.
  • Munnar (Kerala hills): 14 to 26 degrees. Tea-plantation cool. A fleece for early morning plantation walks.
  • Alleppey backwaters: 22 to 31 degrees. Houseboat nights are mild, no AC needed if you sleep with the windows open.
  • Andaman (Port Blair, Havelock): 24 to 30 degrees. Sea temperature around 27 degrees. Diving visibility is at its annual best.
  • Jaisalmer desert: 8 to 26 degrees. Dunes get cold at night . Proper jacket essential for camel safari sleep-outs.
  • Jaipur: 10 to 24 degrees. Layer up in the morning, peel off by lunch.
  • Hampi (Karnataka): 17 to 32 degrees. Hot by 11 am. Boulder hopping is a sunrise-and-sunset activity.
  • Varanasi: 11 to 24 degrees. Misty ghats at sunrise, almost mystical.
  • Khajuraho/Orchha: 12 to 27 degrees. Comfortable temple-walking weather.
  • Aurangabad/Ajanta-Ellora caves: 14 to 30 degrees. Caves are naturally cool.

If you're flying in from Europe or North America, expect to swap your winter coat for layers. India in February isn't tropical sweat-storm and it isn't skiing weather either , it sits in the goldilocks zone for most of the country.

#1 Rajasthan Golden Triangle . Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur (7 Days)

The most-asked-about itinerary for first-timers, and February is the best month to walk Amer Fort, Mehrangarh, and the Taj without melting or shivering.

Split: Delhi 2 nights, Agra 1 night, Jaipur 3 nights, Udaipur or Pushkar 1 night. Use the Gatimaan Express to Agra (100 minutes from Delhi Hazrat Nizamuddin), private car or train to Jaipur (4 to 5 hours), domestic flight to Udaipur if pushing for a fourth city.

Couple budget, mid-range, all-in (excluding international flights): INR 60,000 to 90,000 for clean 3-star hotels with breakfast. INR 90,000 to 1,50,000 for boutique heritage stays (Samode Haveli style, City Palace adjacent). February rates are 20 to 30 percent lower than late December.

Highlights I would not skip: Taj Mahal at sunrise (INR 1,300 foreign nationals, INR 50 Indians), Amer Fort, Udaipur's City Palace, and a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola. See my Jaipur sightseeing days guide. Pickpocketing around Agra and Pushkar can be a problem - see most dangerous places in Rajasthan to avoid.

#2 Kerala Backwaters Plus Munnar Tea Hills (7 Days)

Kerala in February is the trip I push hardest on couples and anyone who wants quiet over crowds. Houseboats in Alleppey aren't booked solid the way they're in late December.

Split: fly into Kochi, 1 night Fort Kochi, drive to Munnar (4 hours) 2 nights, drive to Thekkady-Periyar (3 hours) 1 night, Alleppey 1-night houseboat, finish with 2 nights at Marari beach. Fly out Kochi.

Couple budget, mid-range: INR 50,000 to 75,000 for clean homestays and a standard houseboat. INR 75,000 to 1,00,000 for premium houseboat plus beachfront Marari cottage. Private car runs INR 14 to 16 per km , full week around INR 12,000 to 15,000.

February-specific: Munnar mornings are cool enough for plantation walks without sweating, Periyar elephant sightings are reliable, and the Arabian Sea at Marari is calm enough for actual swimming. See best time to visit Munnar Kerala and best 7-day Kerala itinerary for travelers.

#3 Goa Plus Hampi Combo (7 Days)

For travellers who want beach and history without choosing. North Goa is the party-and-shack scene, South is the sleeper resort scene. Split 4 nights Goa (2 in each, or all 4 in South if calmer), then overnight train or 6-hour drive east to Hampi for 3 nights.

Couple budget, mid-range: INR 40,000 to 65,000 for beach huts and Hampi homestays. INR 65,000 to 90,000 for South Goa resorts plus Evolve Back Hampi or similar.

Hampi is a UNESCO site with Vijayanagara ruins across 26 square kilometres of granite boulders. February afternoons get warm , boulder-hop at sunrise and sunset, rent a bicycle or moped for INR 400 to 600 per day.

Goa transport: most travellers arrive at Madgaon (South) or Thivim (North) , see Goa train station for Coimbatore travelers. For stays see best affordable resorts to stay in at Goa and broader beach options at best beach destinations to visit in India.

#4 Andaman Islands - Port Blair, Havelock, Neil (7 Days)

February is peak Andaman season . Peak prices but peak conditions: 28 to 30 degree water, coral visibility 25 to 30 metres, lowest jellyfish frequency of the year.

Split: fly into Port Blair (connect via Chennai, Kolkata, or Bengaluru), 1 night Port Blair for Cellular Jail, ferry to Havelock for 4 nights, ferry to Neil for 2 nights, ferry back for departure.

Couple budget, mid-range: INR 70,000 to 1,00,000 with Makruzz ferries booked 30 days out and mid-range beach resorts. INR 1,00,000 to 1,40,000 for premium properties like the Taj resort on Havelock or Barefoot. Single-tank scuba dive runs INR 4,000 to 6,000 per person.

Ferries fill up. Makruzz Gold and Green Ocean from Port Blair to Havelock run INR 1,200 to 2,000 per person and sell out 2 to 3 weeks ahead in February. But book before you fly. See are Andaman and Nicobar islands worth visiting. Flights Bangalore or Chennai to Port Blair run INR 9,000 to 14,000 round trip at 8 weeks out; last-minute is INR 22,000-plus.

#5 Khajuraho, Orchha, and Gwalior Heritage Loop (7 Days)

The underrated pick. Khajuraho's Chandela-era UNESCO temples get a fraction of Agra's foot traffic, Orchha is a ghost-medieval town on the Betwa river, and Gwalior fort towers over a city most foreign tourists fly past.

Split: fly Delhi to Khajuraho (direct), 2 nights Khajuraho, drive to Orchha (4 hours) 2 nights, drive Gwalior (2.5 hours) 2 nights, Shatabdi back to Delhi (3 hours).

Couple budget, mid-range: INR 35,000 to 50,000 for clean 3-star hotels. INR 50,000 to 70,000 for heritage stays (Bundelkhand Riverside Orchha, Taj Usha Kiran Palace Gwalior). Private car for the loop runs around INR 11,000.

February gives 22 to 27 degree days for unhurried temple walking - Khajuraho's open-air complex is brutal in summer and foggy in December. The Western Group light-and-sound show is worth the INR 200 ticket.

#6 Varanasi, Bodhgaya, and Sarnath Pilgrimage Circuit (7 Days)

Varanasi in February imprints. The Ganges sunrise mist, the boat aarti, the cremation ghats . Heavier than the others on this list, but it stays with you.

Split: fly to Varanasi, 3 nights Varanasi (half-day to Sarnath, 12 km), train or car to Bodhgaya (5 to 6 hours), 2 nights Bodhgaya for Mahabodhi Temple, return via Patna or Varanasi (2-night buffer).

Couple budget: INR 30,000 to 45,000 for budget homestays and standard hotels. INR 45,000 to 65,000 for Brijrama Palace ghat-front in Varanasi. Boat rides run INR 200 to 800.

The lanes around Vishwanath temple get crowded , pickpocketing happens, keep wallets in front pockets. February ghat mornings are 11 to 14 degrees at 6 am, so I wear a fleece for the sunrise boat. See best temples to visit around Kashi Varanasi.

#7 Mumbai Plus Aurangabad . Ajanta and Ellora Caves (7 Days)

This combo punches above its weight. Mumbai is a heritage city in its own right; Aurangabad is a 1-hour flight away with two UNESCO cave complexes . Ajanta (Buddhist, painted, 2nd century BCE to 6th century CE) and Ellora (Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, with the jaw-dropping Kailasa rock-cut temple).

Split: 3 nights Mumbai (Colaba, Marine Drive, Bandra, Elephanta day trip), fly Aurangabad (INR 4,000 to 7,000 return), 4 nights with a day each to Ellora (30 km) and Ajanta (100 km).

Couple budget: INR 40,000 to 60,000 mid-range. INR 60,000 to 80,000 for Trident Mumbai and Vivanta Aurangabad. Mumbai hotels are pricier per night than anywhere else here.

February Mumbai is the city at its best - 18 to 32 degrees, low humidity, and December-January wedding-season pricing has eased.

#8 Rann of Kutch . White Salt Desert (7 Days)

Rann Utsav runs roughly mid-November to late February. If your dates overlap the closing weeks, this is the most photographable trip on this list.

Split: fly Bhuj (via Mumbai), 2 nights Bhuj for Aina Mahal and old town, transfer to Tent City Dhordo (80 km, 2 hours) for 3 nights, return Bhuj for 2 nights with a Mandvi beach side trip.

Couple budget: INR 50,000 to 80,000 for standard Tent City package (meals, performances, camel cart to salt flats). INR 80,000 to 1,00,000 for premium tents.

February: salt flats are at their crispest white, daytime is warm but not punishing, and full-moon nights produce the photos people travel for. Late February is the last solid window before Utsav wraps.

#9 Wildlife Combo , Ranthambore, Pench, Tadoba (7 Days)

For tigers, February is the sweet spot - leaf cover is thinning so cats are easier to spot near water. Split: 3 nights Ranthambore (fly Delhi-Jaipur, drive 3.5 hours), train or drive to Nagpur, 4 nights split between Pench and Tadoba (both within 3 hours of Nagpur).

Couple budget: INR 60,000 to 1,20,000 depending on lodge tier. Safari permits run INR 1,500 to 3,000 per person per drive. Better lodges include 2 drives daily - 12 chances across 6 days, odds are very good in February. Forest lodges (Taj Sawai Madhopur, Aman-i-Khas, Pench Tree Lodge) book 4 to 6 months out.

Where NOT to Go in February

  • Ladakh, Spiti, Lahaul , most passes (Khardung La, Baralacha) snowed shut. Leh has flights but you'll spend it in 4 to 6 layers indoors.
  • Sikkim and Darjeeling above 8,000 feet - Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La often closed. Gangtok doable but cold.
  • Auli, Mussoorie, Manali mid-February , usable for snow tourism but roads ice over.
  • Northeast above mid-elevations , Tawang, upper Arunachal, upper Meghalaya . Too cold, logistics uncertain.
  • Andaman Nicobar outer islands , permits and ferries less reliable than the main triangle.

I keep a running safety list at most dangerous place in India travel warning , worth a scan before booking anywhere remote.

Holi 2026 Timing , March 4

Holi 2026 falls on Wednesday, March 4 (Holika Dahan night of March 3). If your week stretches into early March, expect Holi-area pricing , Vrindavan and Mathura go nuclear, but Delhi, Jaipur, and Pushkar see 30 to 60 percent uplifts in the 5 days before.

Two options: end by February 28 (cleanest, standard rates), or lean in and book Pushkar or Jaipur for March 3 to 4 and accept the premium because the experience is unlike anything else. Book 90 days out either way.

Republic Day (January 26) creates a long-weekend ripple , Delhi flights that Friday-Saturday are 20 to 30 percent more. By week two of February, prices normalise.

Practical Logistics - Flights, Visas, Trains

Flights: Book international 10 to 14 weeks out for best February fares. Domestic (Delhi-Mumbai, Bangalore-Goa, Mumbai-Aurangabad) books best 6 to 8 weeks ahead. IndiGo is the largest network; Vistara merged into Air India in 2024-2025; Akasa is growing.

eVisa: Most foreign nationals (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, Japan among 160-plus countries) apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Apply at least 4 days ahead; most issued in 72 hours. Tourist eVisa runs USD 25 to 80. Some countries still need consulate visas.

Trains: IRCTC is the only legitimate booking portal. AC chair car and 2AC are the sweet spot. Tatkal opens at 10 am (AC) the day before - useful if you missed the 120-day window. See best train in India for long distance travel.

Local transport: Uber and Ola work in 50-plus cities. Elsewhere, prepaid taxi stands at airports and stations are safe and capped. Auto-rickshaws are negotiable; demand the meter where it exists.

FAQ - Eight Real Questions I Get

1. Is February really better than November or December?
For most of the country, yes. November has some monsoon hangover in the south. December has thicker Delhi smog and fog that delays trains. February gives the best weather-to-price ratio. Exception: Himalayan foothills - November is better there.

2. How does Holi affect a February trip?
Holi 2026 is March 4. End by February 28 and you avoid Holi-related hikes. Run into early March and expect 30 to 60 percent uplifts near Mathura, Vrindavan, Jaipur, Pushkar, and Udaipur. Book early or pivot south where Holi is quieter.

3. Do I need an eVisa?
For 160-plus countries (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, Japan), yes - apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in. USD 25 to 80, issued in 72 hours. Some nationalities still need consulate visas.

4. How variable is February weather?
Very. Delhi morning 8 degrees, Mumbai afternoon 32, Andaman water 27, Munnar evening 14 . All in one week. Pack layers and a fleece even for warm regions - the fleece is for early ghats, plantation walks, and desert nights.

5. Is solo female travel safe in India in February?
Depends on where. Kerala, Goa, Karnataka coast, and Himachal hills are generally relaxed. Delhi after dark, small-town Rajasthan, and rural UP need more caution. Use registered Uber and Ola, avoid late-night solo train compartments, use women-only metro coaches where available. Guided operators (Intrepid, G Adventures, local women-led) are a defensible middle ground.

6. I'm vegetarian. Will I eat well?
Better than in almost any country on Earth. South Indian (idli, dosa, sambar), Gujarati thali, North Indian dal-roti-sabzi. Goa and Kerala have full vegetarian menus everywhere. Vegan is trickier (paneer and ghee are everywhere) but doable.

7. Should I book trains in advance or use Tatkal?
Both. AC classes open 120 days out and February dates fill 30 to 60 days ahead on Delhi-Agra, Delhi-Jaipur, Mumbai-Goa. Tatkal opens 10 am the day before for AC , works in a pinch at 1.5x. IRCTC is the only legitimate portal.

8. What about cold-weather gear?
For everything on this list a fleece, light jacket, and warm socks are enough. The exception is side trips to Auli, Manali, Gulmarg, or Leh - those need proper insulation. Altitude (Leh, Tawang, Spiti) also needs 2 to 3 days of acclimatisation, hard to fit in 7 days.

Final Take

If I had one February week and no other constraints, I would pick Kerala in years I want to slow down, Rajasthan in years I want sights and forts, and Andaman when I want water and silence. There's no wrong answer in February . The wrong answer is showing up in May.

For more background see Wikipedia's India page and the Wikivoyage India guide for crowd-sourced practical tips.

Safe travels. Pack the fleece even for Goa.
