Best Month to Visit Kerala: Season Guide
Last updated: April 2026 · 12 min read
I've been travelling through Kerala since 2017, and the question I get asked most is some version of "when should I go?" The honest answer: there's no single best month . There are three completely different Keralas depending on when you arrive. Backwaters in July look nothing like backwaters in January. Munnar in May is empty and warm. Munnar in December is cold, fogged-in, and packed with honeymooners paying triple rates.
The state runs on a tight monsoon calendar , southwest from June, then northeast rains returning in October. Layered on top is Onam, the harvest festival that pulls the whole state into ten days of feasts, snake-boat races, and Kathakali. So then the Ayurveda industry, which prefers the rainy months. Below is the month-by-month breakdown I wish someone had handed me on my first trip.
TL;DR: November to February is the sweet spot for backwaters and tea hills , perfect weather, peak prices. August to September is for Onam (September 4, 2026 is the main day) and cultural travel. June to July is the contrarian's window: monsoon Ayurveda treatments at roughly half the winter rate, with rain you'll either love or hate. Skip March to May unless you're heading straight to Munnar's tea estates, which stay 8 to 10 degrees cooler than the coast.
How to Think About Kerala by Month
Pick a month using four levers: temperature, rainfall, crowd density, and price. And the coastal belt , Kochi, Alleppey, Varkala, Kovalam , sits between 23 and 33 degrees Celsius most of the year, with humidity swinging from 65 percent in January to 90 percent in July. The Western Ghats, where Munnar and Wayanad sit at 1,500 to 1,700 metres, run 8 to 12 degrees cooler.
Rainfall is the dominant variable. Kerala receives roughly 3,000 mm annually per the IMD, and 70 percent of that arrives between June and September. Plus crowd and price track inversely with rain , when the sky clears in late November, hotel rates climb sharply, peak around Christmas, then ease in late January and February before the summer slump kicks in by mid-March.
January - The Peak Month
January is the cleanest, driest, most photogenic month in Kerala, and the prices reflect it. Coastal temperatures sit around 22 to 31 degrees, Munnar drops to 5 degrees overnight, and the backwaters are glass-flat. Plus i paid INR 17,500 for a Brunton Boatyard heritage room in early January 2024 , the same room costs INR 7,500 in July. Houseboats out of Alleppey run INR 18,000 to 22,000 per night for a premium one-bedroom unit. Book six to eight weeks ahead or accept whatever's left. This is the month for first-timers who want every photograph to land.
February . The Peak Shoulder
February holds January's weather without January's holiday markup. So kochi runs 23 to 32 degrees, Munnar starts warming into the mid-20s during the day. Hotel rates drop 15 to 20 percent from January. I think February is the single best month for a balanced two-week itinerary - clear weather, thinner crowds at Periyar and Munnar, prices that don't make you flinch.
The Attukal Pongala festival in Thiruvananthapuram lands on February 27, 2026 , over a million women cook rice offerings on temple street altars. If you're routing through the capital, time it.
March . Hot Starts
By mid-March the coast is hot. Daytime temperatures climb to 34 degrees and humidity creeps up. Munnar stays comfortable at 14 to 26 degrees, but Alleppey houseboats become uncomfortable without strong AC, which most non-premium boats don't have. Prices drop 20 percent versus February. March works for tea-estate trips and Periyar wildlife. For backwaters and beaches, it's already past prime.
April - Mango Season Hot
April is when Kerala's mangoes hit the markets , Mulgoba, Neelam, Kilichundan - and the heat becomes the trip's defining feature. Coastal temperatures hit 35 degrees with 75 percent humidity. Vishu, the Malayalam New Year, lands on April 14, 2026. Temples decorate with the Vishukkani arrangement of fruits, flowers, and a mirror, and families set off firecrackers at dawn. Munnar in April is exactly right - 13 to 27 degrees, dry, and noticeably less crowded than December. If you only want hill stations, April is a contrarian win.
May - Very Hot, Very Empty
May is the hardest month on the coast. Pre-monsoon humidity, daily highs near 36 degrees, and brief evening thunderstorms that don't actually cool anything down. The second week of May tends to be the worst. Hotel rates bottom out, but the experience suffers enough that the savings aren't worth it. Munnar and Wayanad still work; the coast really doesn't.
June . Southwest Monsoon Arrives
The southwest monsoon hits Kerala around June 1, give or take three days. The IMD onset declaration is treated like a national event. The first week is dramatic: torrential rain, wind, lightning over the Arabian Sea. So by mid-June the rhythm settles into heavy morning showers and clearer afternoons.
This is when serious Ayurveda travellers start arriving. Traditional Panchakarma protocols specify Karkidakam (mid-July to mid-August) as the optimal window - humidity opens skin pores, the body is more receptive to oil therapies. I did a seven-night programme at Vana Resort Malabar in June 2023 for INR 1,40,000 inclusive of accommodation, three Sattvic meals daily, and twice-daily treatments. The same package books at INR 2,50,000 for December.
July - Heavy Rain
July is the wettest month , Munnar can record over 700 mm. Roads to high-elevation tea estates close occasionally for landslides, and houseboat operations shrink. If you go, you commit to the rain. Athirappilly waterfalls are at their fullest. Karkidakam begins mid-July; Ayurveda centres are at their busiest. Pricing is the lowest of the year . Kumarakom Lake Resort villa runs INR 12,000 to 14,000 versus INR 32,000 over Christmas. Houseboats fall to INR 8,000 for a basic one-bedroom.
August - Onam Season Begins
Onam dominates August and early September. The 10-day festival starts with Atham and ends with Thiruvonam. In 2026, Thiruvonam falls on Friday, September 4. And celebrations begin around August 26.
The Aranmula Uthrattadi snake-boat race runs the day before Thiruvonam , long chundan vallams, 100-plus oarsmen each, paddling in unison along the Pamba River. The Champakulam Moolam race earlier in August is the older sibling. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race at Punnamada Lake runs the second Saturday of August. Sadya feasts . 26-plus dishes on banana leaves , appear at every restaurant. Rain still falls in August but tapers compared to July. The cultural payoff is the highest of any month if you time it correctly.
September , Post-Onam Quieter
Once Thiruvonam passes, the state takes a collective breath. Domestic travel drops sharply. Rain continues into the second week of September then thins out. So international photographers I know target this window - wet earth, mist on the tea hills, soft light, almost no crowds. Hotels run 30 to 40 percent below winter rates with better availability.
October . Northeast Monsoon Variable
October is the toss-up month. The southwest monsoon retreats, but the northeast monsoon , locally called Thulavarsham , arrives with afternoon thunderstorms. It's lighter than June-to-September but unpredictable. First two weeks lean wetter, last two weeks lean drier. By the final week, conditions are usually settled enough that hotels begin raising rates.
Theyyam season starts in mid-October in northern Kerala (Kannur and Kasaragod). These ritual performances run nightly through May. If you're aiming at Theyyam specifically, serious enthusiasts target January to April.
November , Post-Monsoon Ideal
November is the most underrated month. Land is still green from the rains, air smells washed-clean, temperatures sit at 23 to 30 degrees on the coast, and prices haven't hit December peaks. From November 15 onwards the weather is essentially identical to January at 25 to 30 percent lower rates. I've done two of my best Kerala trips entirely in late November - backwaters, Munnar, Periyar, Marari - and paid roughly what March costs.
December , Peak Holiday and Christmas Premium
The first three weeks of December offer excellent weather and reasonable prices. So then Christmas hits and rates jump 60 to 100 percent for December 22 to January 5. Brunton Boatyard's INR 7,500 monsoon room is INR 17,500 in early December and INR 22,000 over New Year. Houseboats hit INR 22,000 to 28,000. Fort Kochi books out four months ahead. The Cochin Carnival runs December 30 to January 1 with the pappanji burning at midnight on December 31.
Onam Festival 2026 , The Cultural Anchor
Thiruvonam 2026: Friday, September 4. The Onam season runs from Atham on August 26 through Thiruvonam.
Snake-boat race calendar for 2026 (subject to committee confirmation):
- Champakulam Moolam , third week of July or early August
- Nehru Trophy Boat Race . Saturday, August 8, 2026
- Aranmula Uthrattadi . September 3, 2026 (day before Thiruvonam)
- Payippad - three-day event around early September
Watch for sadya menus at Dakshin (Crowne Plaza Kochi), Kashi Art Cafe in Fort Kochi, and traditional homestays throughout Alleppey. Kathakali performances at Kerala Kathakali Centre run nightly, with extended programming during Onam week. And for Onam-focused travel, fly into Kochi August 28 to September 6, base in Alleppey or Kumarakom, and day-trip to Aranmula for the boat race.
Munnar Tea Hills, Month by Month
Munnar sits at 1,600 metres in the Western Ghats and runs cooler than the coast year-round. January days hit 22 degrees with overnight lows around 5; bring layers. February to March warm into the high 20s. Plus april to May runs 14 to 27 degrees - the most pleasant window for trekking Eravikulam grasslands and Anamudi peak (forest department permits required).
June to August brings heavy rain and mist that lingers all day; routes through Devikulam can close after landslides. September to October is wet but workable. November to January is peak , clear skies, cool nights, tea estates at their visual best.
The Neelakurinji bloom is the once-every-12-years event. Next bloom: 2030. Outside that year, Munnar's regular circuit (Top Station, Eco Point, Kundala Lake, Tata Tea Museum) holds up across most months. So for granular monthly detail, see best-time-to-visit-munnar-kerala-for-tourists.
Backwaters - Alleppey and Kumarakom by Month
The Vembanad Lake backwaters change personality across the year. November to February is the textbook experience: glass-flat water, golden hour light, houseboats moving slowly past coir villages. March to May the heat makes daytime cruising tiring even with AC. But june to September brings rain on the houseboat - atmospheric in its own way, but if you booked expecting sunset photographs, you'll be disappointed.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race in August is the backwaters at peak energy. October water levels are still high from monsoon runoff. Pricing tracks the season: INR 8,000 to 10,000 in June to September, INR 14,000 to 16,000 in March and October, INR 18,000 to 24,000 November to February. Plus for a full coast-and-backwaters loop, see best-7-day-kerala-itinerary-for-travelers.
Periyar and Thekkady Wildlife by Month
Periyar Tiger Reserve runs distinct dry-season and monsoon-season experiences. October to March is dry , animals concentrate at the lake (the only reliable water source), boat safaris run multiple slots daily, and bamboo rafting operates at full schedule. February and March are highest-probability months for elephant herds and gaur sightings. June to September the forest is dense, foliage limits visibility, and many trails close. Bird photographers actually prefer this window , the canopy is full and rain creates moody light.
Beach Destinations by Month
Varkala's red cliff and beach are best November to March. Swimming is safe, the cliff-top cafe strip is fully open, surfing schools run from December. By April the heat hits hard and waves get rougher.
Marari, north of Alleppey, runs November to February as peak. Marari Beach Resort lists rooms at INR 16,000 in November rising to INR 28,000 over Christmas. Kovalam works September through April . Its protected crescent means it's swimmable through the lighter monsoon months. Bekal in north Kerala is best December to February, when the fort sits clear against blue skies and the beach empties out.

The Monsoon Ayurveda Argument
Ayurveda tradition points to Karkidakam (mid-July to mid-August) as the prime treatment month. The reasoning: monsoon humidity opens pores, cooler temperatures reduce metabolic stress, and dietary discipline is easier when the body craves warm spiced food. Authentic Panchakarma centres supervised by registered physicians shorten winter calendars and concentrate intensive programmes in monsoon months.
A 14-day classical Panchakarma at Somatheeram (Kovalam) runs roughly INR 2,40,000 in July versus INR 3,80,000 in December. Vana Resort Malabar's seven-night programme runs INR 1,40,000 in June against INR 2,50,000 in December . Same treatments, roughly 40 percent off.
If your trip is structured around treatment, monsoon is the right answer. If you want to combine Ayurveda with backwater cruising and Munnar, November works better , you sacrifice traditional alignment for usable weather.

- Onam / Thiruvonam - September 4, 2026; August 25, 2027
- Christmas / Cochin Carnival - December 25 to January 1
- Theyyam season (north Kerala) . Mid-October to mid-May

Combining Months for Trip Type
- Backwaters + tea hills classic , November 15 to February 28. Best balance of weather, photography, reasonable rates outside Christmas week.
- Wildlife and Periyar focus , December to March. Lake-edge concentration peaks February and March.
- Ayurveda and Panchakarma , June 15 to August 31. Karkidakam alignment plus 40 percent savings.
- Photography and culture - Late August through late September. Onam, post-monsoon green, fewer tourists.
- Hill stations only , March to May for Munnar without crowds.
- Beach honeymoon - December for guaranteed weather, March for value. See best-month-for-india-beach-honeymoon-trips for Kerala vs Goa vs Andamans.

When NOT to Book
Two windows I'd actively avoid:
- First two weeks of December - rates are climbing toward Christmas premium, but waters are still settling from October northeast monsoon. You pay near-peak prices for shoulder-quality conditions.
- Second week of May - pre-monsoon humidity at its worst, daytime highs hit 36 degrees, relief showers haven't started. Munnar still works in May; the coast really doesn't.
If your dates are flexible, shift by a week or two and the trade-off improves dramatically.

FAQ
Q: Are flights into Kochi reliable during monsoon?
A: Mostly yes, with delays. I've sat through one-hour-plus tarmac waits in July. Build four hours of buffer for connecting flights. Air India Express, IndiGo, and Akasa serve Kochi (COK) heavily.
Q: Are leeches a problem in Wayanad and Munnar during monsoon?
A: Yes, in forested treks June through September. Tuck pants into socks, use Dettol or rock salt prophylactically. Hotels in trekking areas usually have leech socks for sale.
Q: Is monsoon Ayurveda actually authentic, or marketing?
A: Traditional , Karkidakam is named in classical Ayurveda texts. Registered medical centres genuinely schedule courses around monsoon. Spa-massage operations market it more aggressively than they should.
Q: How crowded does Onam get for tourists?
A: Less crowded than you'd think for foreigners. Onam is primarily a domestic family festival , locals travel home rather than to tourist destinations. Book the boat-race spectator side at least a month ahead.
Q: Is alcohol available across the year?
A: Yes, but Kerala restricts retail sales to government beverage corporations and bar-licensed hotels. Houseboats can serve with operator license. Three-star-plus hotels generally have full bars. Dry days apply on Vishu, Thiruvonam, and certain festival days.
Q: Can I do Munnar and the backwaters in May realistically?
A: Munnar yes, backwaters no. Munnar at 1,600 metres stays comfortable while Alleppey hits 36 degrees and 80 percent humidity. If locked into May, build a Munnar-Thekkady-Munnar loop and skip the lake.
Q: What happens to houseboat operators in July?
A: Roughly 40 percent of the fleet ties up for maintenance. Premium boats keep operating but routes are shortened. Avoid bottom-tier operators in July , they cut corners further.
Q: Is northeast Kerala (Kannur, Kasaragod, Bekal) different from the south?
A: Climatically similar, slightly drier, culturally distinct , Theyyam, Mappila Muslim cuisine, quieter beaches. Best window December to February. Worth a separate trip.

Pick a month that matches the trip you want, not the one Google returns first. December is famous because December is famous, not because December is universally right. Go in November for the same weather minus the markup. Plus go in August for Onam. Go in July if Ayurveda is the point. Kerala rewards travellers who match their month to their goal.
