Nepal Tour Destinations: Everest Base Camp (Sagarmatha NP UNESCO 1979), Annapurna Circuit, Kathmandu Valley UNESCO 1979, Pokhara, Lumbini UNESCO 1997, and Chitwan UNESCO 1984
I arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) at 14:35 on a Tuesday in late October, watched the cloud break apart over the Bagmati Valley, and saw the wall of white peaks that stitches the northern horizon shut. Nepal is 147,516 km² of compressed altitude, sliding from 60 m at the Terai plains to 8,848.86 m at Mount Everest, and that vertical compression is the reason I keep coming back. This guide is built from three trips between 2022 and 2026, current government permit prices for the 2025-2026 trekking season, and the same kind of measurement-first reporting I use for every long-form draft on this site.
TL;DR
Nepal sits between India and Tibet, holds 8 of the world's 14 peaks above 8,000 m, and packs four UNESCO World Heritage Sites into a country roughly the size of Greece. The headline trek is Everest Base Camp at 5,364 m, reached via a USD 180-250 one-way flight to Lukla (2,860 m) and a 130 km round-trip through Sagarmatha National Park (inscribed 1979). Annapurna Circuit is the other classic, a 160-230 km loop over Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m that takes 12 to 21 days depending on the start and end road heads. Kathmandu Valley, inscribed in 1979, gathers 7 monument zones including three royal Durbar Squares (Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur), Pashupatinath Temple on the Bagmati, the 36 m Bouddhanath Stupa, the 5th-century Swayambhunath, and Changu Narayan dated 464 AD. Pokhara, 200 km west of Kathmandu, lies on the 5.7 km² Phewa Lake at 1,500 m and serves as both a paragliding capital (USD 90-150 for a 30-minute tandem) and the southern gateway to the Annapurna massif. Lumbini, the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama in 563 BC and a UNESCO site since 1997, anchors the southern Terai with its Mayadevi Temple, the Ashoka Pillar dated 249 BC, and a 1.6 km² monastic zone of 25 international monasteries. Chitwan National Park, the country's first national park (gazetted 1973, UNESCO 1984), covers 932 km² and shelters more than 700 Indian one-horned rhinos and around 70 wild Bengal tigers, with jeep safaris from USD 25 to USD 50. Visa-on-arrival is USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days, USD 125 for 90 days. Currency is the Nepali Rupee (NPR), trading near 133 NPR per USD in May 2026, and Indian Rupees are accepted at 1.6 NPR per INR almost everywhere. The Nepali trekking calendar centers on two windows: post-monsoon October-November for the clearest air, and pre-monsoon March-May for warmer rhododendron-bloom slopes. Plan a 14-18 day Nepal trekking trip.
Why Nepal matters
Nepal is the only country I have travelled where the elevation gain from one border to the other exceeds the height of K2. The southern Terai sits at 60 m near Lumbini, and a 200 km horizontal line northward hits Everest at 8,848.86 m. Squeezed into that strip are 8 of the 14 mountains on the planet above 8,000 m: Everest 8,848.86 m, Kanchenjunga 8,586 m (on the Indian border), Lhotse 8,516 m, Makalu 8,485 m, Cho Oyu 8,188 m, Dhaulagiri I 8,167 m, Manaslu 8,163 m, and Annapurna I 8,091 m. That single concentration of high peaks is the central reason Nepal anchored 1.18 million international visitors in 2023, and tourism receipts make up roughly 6.7% of GDP according to the Nepal Rastra Bank.
The UNESCO list reads like a thesis statement for the country. Kathmandu Valley was inscribed in 1979 with 7 separate monument zones, recognising the Newar civic and religious architecture that flourished under the Malla kings between 1201 and 1769. Sagarmatha National Park (1979) protects 1,148 km² around Everest, including the Khumbu Glacier and the Sherpa cultural zone. Chitwan National Park (1984) covers 932 km² of subtropical Inner Terai forest and grassland. Lumbini, inscribed in 1997, marks the spot where Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in 563 BC, with the Ashoka Pillar dated to 249 BC confirming Emperor Ashoka's pilgrimage 314 years later.
The 25 April 2015 Gorkha earthquake (Mw 7.8) killed close to 9,000 people, injured 22,000, and damaged about 600,000 houses. Many of the temples in Kathmandu Valley collapsed or partially failed, and reconstruction has been slow, hand-cut, and still ongoing in 2026. Walking past scaffolded shrines in Patan in November 2025, I watched master Newar craftsmen recutting carved struts for the Krishna Mandir using exactly the same toolkit their grandfathers used. Nepal abolished its monarchy on 28 May 2008 and re-emerged as the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal after a decade of Maoist insurgency that ended with the 2006 Comprehensive Peace Accord. The country was declared secular in 2007 and is now stitched together by tourism, remittance flows from Gulf states, and Himalayan agriculture.
Background
Nepal's recorded history starts with the Licchavi dynasty, which ruled the Kathmandu Valley between roughly 400 and 750 AD and gave the region its first stone inscriptions, including the Changu Narayan inscription of 464 AD, the oldest dated record found in the country. The Malla period followed and stretched from 1201 to 1769, with the three city-states of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur competing in temple construction, woodwork, and bronze casting. That rivalry is the reason there are three Durbar Squares rather than one, and the reason 96% of Newar artisanal techniques observed today trace to that 568-year window.
Modern Nepal was forged by Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha, who captured Kathmandu in 1768 and unified the surrounding kingdoms by 1769. The Shah line ruled, on paper, until 2008, but real power passed to the Rana family between 1846 and 1951. Jang Bahadur Rana installed himself as hereditary prime minister after the 1846 Kot Massacre, and the Rana oligarchy effectively isolated Nepal from the world for 105 years, while still sending Gurkha soldiers into both world wars. The Rana regime fell in 1951, the monarchy was restored, and the country experimented with party politics until King Mahendra dismissed parliament in 1960.
After the 1990 Jana Andolan democracy movement, Nepal adopted a constitutional monarchy. The Maoist insurgency began in February 1996, killed more than 17,000 people over a decade, and ended with the 21 November 2006 peace agreement. A constituent assembly abolished the monarchy on 28 May 2008. The current constitution, promulgated on 20 September 2015, divides the country into 7 provinces and recognises 123 languages. The federal capital is Kathmandu, population approximately 1.5 million in the metropolitan area as of the 2021 census.

Tier 1 destinations
Everest Base Camp Trek and Sagarmatha National Park (UNESCO 1979)
The Everest Base Camp trek is the trip people picture when they say "Nepal." I flew in from Kathmandu domestic terminal to Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla (2,860 m) on a 36-seat Twin Otter, a flight of 35 minutes that costs USD 180-250 one way in 2026 with Tara Air, Summit Air, or Yeti Airlines. From October onward many of these flights leave from Ramechhap (Manthali) Airport 132 km east of Kathmandu, adding a 4-5 hour pre-dawn jeep transfer. The standard route walks 130 km round-trip over 12 to 16 days: Lukla, Phakding (2,610 m), Namche Bazaar (3,440 m, the Sherpa capital with 1,650 residents and an excellent bakery near the gompa), Tengboche Monastery (3,867 m, rebuilt after a 1989 fire), Dingboche (4,410 m, second acclimatisation stop), Lobuche (4,940 m), Gorak Shep (5,164 m, last lodge village), Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), and an early-morning push to Kala Patthar (5,545 m) for the textbook Everest view.
Permits stack to USD 50 for the Sagarmatha National Park entry, USD 30 for the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee fee at Lukla, and USD 30 (NPR 2,000) for the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit that replaced the TIMS card on this route in 2018. The Sherpa-run teahouses charge USD 5-10 for a bed, USD 6-10 for dal bhat, USD 4-6 for a mug of milk tea, USD 4-8 for Wi-Fi (Everest Link), and USD 3-5 to charge a phone, with prices roughly doubling between Namche and Gorak Shep. Carry USD 1,200-1,800 in NPR for a 14-day teahouse trip if you are guided, USD 2,200-3,000 if you go with a full agency package that includes the Lukla flight, a licensed guide (mandatory for foreigners since 1 April 2023 across most trekking areas), and porter at USD 25-30 per day.
Acute mountain sickness is the only thing that derails this trek for most people. The standard schedule rests 2 nights at Namche and 2 at Dingboche, climbs no more than 500 m of sleeping altitude per day above 3,000 m, and uses Diamox (acetazolamide 125-250 mg twice daily) as prophylaxis from Namche upward. I have watched stronger trekkers than me turn back at Lobuche with HACE symptoms because they tried to compress the schedule. Best windows are 1 October to 30 November and 1 March to 15 May. Daytime temperatures at base camp swing from 10°C in November sun to minus 15°C at dawn, and the wind chill at Kala Patthar at 06:00 is the coldest air I have ever stood inside.
Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Sanctuary
The Annapurna Circuit is the second-classic Nepali trek and, for my money, the more varied one. The trail loops around the Annapurna massif, anchored by Annapurna I at 8,091 m (the 10th-highest mountain on Earth and the first 8,000-m peak ever summited, by Maurice Herzog on 3 June 1950). Classic length is 160-230 km depending on where road construction lets you start and where you finish. Most people now begin at Besisahar (760 m) or jeep-shortcut to Chame (2,710 m), and end at Jomsom (2,720 m) or Tatopani (1,190 m). The high point is Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m, crossed in a single 14-hour push from Thorong Phedi (4,540 m) to Muktinath (3,710 m), starting at 04:00 to beat the afternoon wind.
The standard 12-21 day itinerary moves up the Marsyangdi Valley through Manang (3,540 m), where I always spend an extra acclimatisation day for the Gangapurna Lake side hike and the 15:00 altitude lecture at the Himalayan Rescue Association post. Manang has espresso, German bakeries, and a 1980s-era cinema that still screens "Seven Years in Tibet" most evenings for NPR 500. After Thorong La the trail drops into the Mustang rain shadow, hits the Vishnu shrine at Muktinath (sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, with 108 stone water spouts), and follows the Kali Gandaki gorge, the deepest river canyon on Earth at 6,967 m between Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri I.
The Annapurna Sanctuary trek is the shorter sibling, 7 to 12 days from Nayapul or Kyumi to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m, passing the Machapuchare viewpoint at Deurali (3,200 m). Permits are simpler than the Everest region: USD 30 (NPR 3,000) for the Annapurna Conservation Area Project entry, plus USD 20 (NPR 2,000) for the TIMS card. The Jomsom-Pokhara flight, when running, costs USD 130-180 one way and shaves 2 days of road travel through Beni. Teahouse rooms run NPR 500-1,500 (USD 4-12), and Sanctuary route dal bhat sits at NPR 700-1,100 (USD 5-8). Best windows mirror Everest: October to mid-November for clear views and March to early May for rhododendron forests in flower between 2,200 and 3,200 m.
Kathmandu Valley UNESCO (1979) - 7 monument zones
Kathmandu Valley packs an extraordinary density of religious and civic architecture into 665 km². UNESCO recognises 7 monument zones inside the valley: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Pashupatinath Temple, Bouddhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath, and Changu Narayan. I budget 4 days minimum to walk all seven without rushing, and 6 days to see them properly.
Kathmandu Durbar Square (Hanuman Dhoka), USD 10 (NPR 1,000) for foreigners, was the seat of the Malla and early Shah kings. The 2015 earthquake collapsed the Maju Deval, the Kasthamandap (the wooden pavilion that gave the city its name), and most of the Trailokya Mohan Narayan temple. Reconstruction using the original 1690s timbers and replacement seasoned sal wood continues into 2026. Patan Durbar Square, USD 15 (NPR 1,000 for SAARC, NPR 1,500 for others), is the most intact of the three squares, with the 1637 Krishna Mandir (a 21-shrine stone shikhara, the only one of its scale in Nepal) and the Patan Museum inside the old royal palace, which is one of South Asia's best-curated museums. Bhaktapur Durbar Square, USD 18 (NPR 1,800) for non-SAARC, takes the whole afternoon and is the easiest place in the valley to see Newari pottery, wood carving, and Juju Dhau (king curd) made the way it has been made since the 16th century.
Pashupatinath Temple, the holiest Shiva site in Nepal and one of the most important in the Hindu world, sits on the west bank of the Bagmati. Non-Hindus cannot enter the main temple but the riverside cremation ghats are open and free to view from the east bank. Bouddhanath Stupa, 36 m tall and 100 m in diameter, is the largest stupa in Asia and the focus of Tibetan Buddhist life in the valley, with at least 50 surrounding gompas. Entry USD 4 (NPR 400). Swayambhunath, the "Monkey Temple," sits on a 77 m hill west of central Kathmandu and dates in its earliest stupa form to the 5th century, with the famous painted eyes of the Buddha looking out from the harmika. Entry USD 2 (NPR 200). Changu Narayan, 22 km east of central Kathmandu on a 1,541 m hill, is the oldest dated temple complex in Nepal, anchored by an inscription of King Manadeva from 464 AD. Entry USD 3 (NPR 300).
Pokhara and Phewa Lake
Pokhara is the second city of Nepal, 200 km west of Kathmandu, and the place I always recommend first-time visitors stay 3 nights even if they are not trekking. The city lies on the 5.7 km² Phewa Tal at an altitude of 742 m (the city) to 1,500 m on the Sarangkot ridge above. From the Lakeside (Baidam) strip you face directly north and watch Machapuchare (Fishtail, 6,993 m, never officially summited and closed to climbing), Annapurna South 7,219 m, and Annapurna I 8,091 m, change colour at 06:15 and 18:00. The boat to the Tal Barahi Temple, the small island shrine in the middle of the lake, costs NPR 800 (USD 6) for an hour's row.
The Sarangkot viewpoint at 1,592 m is the standard sunrise spot, a 20-minute taxi from Lakeside (USD 8-12 one way) plus a 15-minute walk. From Sarangkot you also launch paragliders. A 30-minute tandem flight runs USD 90-110 and an "acro" hour with thermals on a good November morning runs USD 130-150, both with Frontiers Paragliding, Blue Sky, or Sunrise Paragliding. Pokhara recorded its 100,000th tandem flight in 2019, and it is consistently ranked in the top 5 commercial paragliding sites in the world. The World Peace Pagoda, built by the Japanese Nipponzan Myohoji order and completed on the south ridge in 1973, is a 30-minute boat-and-hike from Lakeside and worth the morning. Davis Falls (Patale Chhango) and the Gupteshwor Cave on the south side of town are the standard tourist add-ons, with combined entry USD 2 (NPR 200). Begnas Lake, 16 km east, is the quieter alternative to Phewa for an afternoon swim.
From Pokhara, the Annapurna trailheads are 1 to 2 hours by road. Getting here from Kathmandu takes 6-8 hours by tourist bus (USD 12-25) along the Prithvi Highway, 5-6 hours by private car (USD 100-140), or 25 minutes by air on Buddha Air or Yeti Airlines for USD 65-90 one way.
Chitwan National Park UNESCO (1984) and Lumbini UNESCO (1997)
Chitwan is the Inner Terai, a 932 km² subtropical floodplain along the Rapti and Narayani rivers, gazetted as Nepal's first national park in 1973 and inscribed by UNESCO in 1984. The headline animals are the Indian one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis, the 2021 count put the Chitwan population at 694, up from 100 in 1968) and the Bengal tiger (approximately 70 adults, part of a national total of 355 in 2022). The park also holds gharial crocodiles, sloth bears, and over 500 bird species. Sauraha is the main eastern gateway and the place I have stayed twice. Park entry is NPR 2,000 (USD 15) per person per day for foreigners. A half-day jeep safari runs USD 25-40, a full-day jeep safari USD 50-80, and a 1-hour dugout-canoe ride on the Rapti USD 20-25. The elephant breeding centre near Khorsor is USD 2 (NPR 150). Bardia, in the far west, is the quieter alternative with a higher tiger density.
Lumbini, 165 km west of Chitwan and 22 km from the Indian border at Sunauli, is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, born in 563 BC under a sal tree in the garden where the Mayadevi Temple now stands. The Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka of the Maurya empire in 249 BC and inscribed with a Brahmi script confirming the spot, is the single most important archaeological object on the site. UNESCO inscribed Lumbini in 1997, and the 1.6 km × 4.8 km Lumbini Master Plan, drawn up by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange in 1978, divides the complex into a Sacred Garden, a Monastic Zone (with 25 international monasteries built by Thailand, China, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, South Korea, Germany, France, Austria, and others), and a New Lumbini Village. Entry to the Sacred Garden is USD 3 (NPR 200), with photography permits at the Mayadevi Temple an additional NPR 500.
Tier 2 destinations
- Upper Mustang and Lo Manthang - Former forbidden kingdom on the Tibetan plateau north of Annapurna. Restricted area, USD 500 special permit for the first 10 days plus USD 50 per additional day, ACAP USD 30 on top. Lo Manthang's walled city at 3,840 m and the Chhoser sky caves are the highlights.
- Manaslu Circuit - The serious alternative to Annapurna Circuit since the road reached Manang. 177 km, 14-18 days, Larkya La Pass at 5,160 m, restricted area permit USD 100/week September-November and USD 75/week December-August.
- Langtang Valley - Closest major trek to Kathmandu, 9-11 days, Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m with a Tsergo Ri side hike to 4,985 m. Devastated by the 2015 earthquake (the village of Langtang was wiped out by an avalanche on 25 April 2015) and now fully rebuilt. USD 25 Langtang National Park entry plus USD 20 TIMS.
- Bardia National Park - 968 km² in far-western Nepal, gazetted 1988. Higher tiger density and fewer tourists than Chitwan, with rhinos (38 individuals as of 2021) and Gangetic dolphins on the Karnali. Park entry USD 15 per day.
- Nagarkot - Sunrise ridge 32 km east of Kathmandu at 2,175 m. Clear-morning panorama spans from Annapurna II in the west to Numbur (6,958 m) east of Everest, taxi from Kathmandu USD 25-35 one way.

Nepal is one of the most affordable trekking destinations on the planet once you are off the airline portion. A fully guided 14-day Everest Base Camp package (flights, guide, porter, permits, teahouses, food) ranges USD 1,400-2,200 booked through a Kathmandu agency. The same trip independent (now requires a licensed guide as of 1 April 2023 for foreigners) costs USD 950-1,500.
How to plan it
Airports. Tribhuvan International (KTM) in Kathmandu is the single international gateway for nearly all visitors (Pokhara International PKR opened 1 January 2023 but as of May 2026 still has only a handful of international flights via Yangon and Kunming). Pokhara domestic and Lukla (LUA) are the two trekking-relevant domestic airports, plus Jomsom (JMO) for the Annapurna-Mustang region, Tumlingtar for Makalu, and Bhairahawa-Gautam Buddha International (BWA) near Lumbini, opened May 2022 with limited service.
Domestic carriers. Buddha Air (737-700, ATR-72), Yeti Airlines and its Tara Air subsidiary (DHC-6 Twin Otter for Lukla and Jomsom), Summit Air, and Shree Airlines. Buddha and Yeti are the safest choices statistically; verify your operator before booking the Lukla leg. Kathmandu-Pokhara is 25 minutes, USD 65-90 one way. Kathmandu-Lukla is 35 minutes, USD 180-250 one way.
Seasons. Two prime windows: 1 October to 30 November (clearest skies post-monsoon, daytime 12-20°C in mid-hills, minus 10°C at EBC at night), and 1 March to 15 May (warmer, hazier, rhododendron bloom). Monsoon runs roughly 15 June to 25 September, with 80% of annual rainfall and frequent landslides. December to February is the budget shoulder, doable for low-altitude treks like Poon Hill but harsh above 4,000 m.
Languages. Nepali (official, Devanagari script) is spoken by 44% as a mother tongue and understood by almost all. English is widely used in tourism. I have never had a problem ordering food, hiring a guide, or buying a bus ticket in English in any trekking region. Hindi is widely understood thanks to media and cross-border trade.
Currency. Nepali Rupee (NPR), trading at approximately 133 NPR per USD on 11 May 2026. The NPR is pegged to the Indian Rupee at exactly 1 INR = 1.6 NPR, fixed since 1994. Indian Rupees up to INR 100 notes are accepted at face value everywhere; INR 500 and 2000 notes are technically not legal tender in Nepal, so do not bring them. ATMs are common in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Sauraha, Lumbini, Namche, and Jomsom, with a typical withdrawal cap of NPR 35,000 per transaction and a NPR 500-700 foreign-card fee.
Visas. Visa-on-arrival at KTM and at most overland borders: USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days, USD 125 for 90 days, all multi-entry. E-visa is recommended (apply at nepaliport.immigration.gov.np within 15 days of arrival) to skip one queue. Bring one passport photo and pay in USD cash, with EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, JPY, CNY, INR, and other major currencies also accepted at the airport counter.
Acclimatisation. Above 3,000 m, sleep no more than 500 m higher than the previous night and build in a rest day every 1,000 m of gained sleeping altitude. The "climb high, sleep low" rule is non-negotiable on EBC and the Annapurna Circuit. Diamox 125 mg twice daily starting one day before reaching 3,000 m is standard prophylaxis (talk to a travel doctor if you have a sulfa allergy). Watch for headache, nausea, ataxia, and shortness of breath at rest; these are descend-now signs.
FAQ
Is the Everest Base Camp trek dangerous? It is strenuous but not technically dangerous in the climbing sense. There is no ice axe, no rope, no glacier travel on the standard trekkers' route to Base Camp and Kala Patthar. The real risks are altitude sickness (acute mountain sickness, HACE, HAPE), the 35-minute Lukla flight in marginal weather, and slipping on icy yak-track sections after a fresh November snowfall. About 30,000-35,000 trekkers a year complete EBC; statistically you are far safer here than on any drive in Kathmandu traffic. Hire a licensed guide (mandatory for foreigners since 1 April 2023 in most areas), buy travel insurance that explicitly covers helicopter evacuation up to 6,000 m, and walk a sensible 14-day schedule with acclimatisation days at Namche and Dingboche.
How fit do I need to be? Fitter than you think, less fit than the brochures imply. A typical EBC day on the way up is 5-7 hours of walking with 400-600 m of net climb, on rough stone-paved trails. Most weeks I trekked I was carrying 6-8 kg in a daypack while a porter took the main duffel (10-15 kg). Train with three months of cardio at threshold pace (3-4 sessions of 45-60 minutes per week), one weekend hike with a 6-8 kg pack, and stair work. Age is much less limiting than people assume; I have seen successful 68-year-olds at base camp.
Can I do the Annapurna Circuit without a guide? As of 1 April 2023, the Nepal Tourism Board ruling requires foreigners on trekking routes (including Annapurna and Everest regions) to hire a government-licensed guide. Solo trekking is technically disallowed. In practice, enforcement is patchy on the Circuit itself but very strict at TIMS checkpoints. Hire a freelance licensed guide for USD 25-35 per day plus tip; this also dramatically reduces your AMS risk.
When is the monsoon and is it really off-limits? Monsoon runs roughly 15 June to 25 September with 80% of annual precipitation in those 100 days. Trails on Annapurna and EBC are open but cloud cover means you may walk 14 days and never see a mountain, plus leeches in lower elevations and landslides on access roads. Upper Mustang and Dolpo are in the rain shadow north of the main range and are actually best in monsoon, between mid-June and mid-September.
How do I prevent altitude sickness? Three rules. First, gain altitude slowly above 3,000 m, no more than 500 m of sleeping altitude per day, with a full rest day every 1,000 m. Second, drink 4-5 litres of water per day and eat plenty of carbohydrates, even when you have no appetite (dal bhat power, 24 hour). Third, consider Diamox (acetazolamide) at 125 mg twice daily starting 24 hours before crossing 3,000 m and continuing until you descend; it is not a guarantee but it raises your AMS threshold. If symptoms get worse despite rest, descend immediately. Helicopter evacuation is available but only in daylight VFR conditions.
What is teahouse trekking? Teahouses are family-run lodges along all major Nepali trekking routes. You get a private twin room with a shared squat or sit-down toilet, a wood-stove dining hall, and a fixed menu (dal bhat, fried rice, momo dumplings, noodle soup, pancakes, eggs). Rooms cost NPR 500-1,500 (USD 4-12), with the unspoken expectation that you eat dinner and breakfast at the same lodge, where meals run NPR 600-1,400 (USD 5-11). The system means you do not need to carry a tent, stove, or food, and the social atmosphere in the dining halls is one of the best parts of the experience.
Is Lumbini worth a detour? Yes, if you are interested in Buddhism, history, or archaeology, and especially if you are combining it with Chitwan or crossing into India at Sunauli. Two days is enough: one for the Sacred Garden, the Mayadevi Temple, and the Ashoka Pillar; one for the Monastic Zone, where the Chinese, Korean, German, and Thai monasteries are individually worth half a day. The Bhairahawa airport (BWA) opened in May 2022, 25 km away. Avoid April-June, when Terai temperatures regularly hit 42°C.
What about Chitwan in monsoon? Chitwan is open year-round but mid-June to mid-September flooding can close internal park roads, and many jungle walks and canoe trips are suspended. October to early March is the prime window, with comfortable 22-28°C daytime temperatures and the best rhino-sighting odds because the tall elephant grass has been cut and water levels are low.
Nepali phrases and cultural notes
A few words in Nepali transform every interaction. "Namaste" (with palms together at the chest) for hello and goodbye. "Dhanyabad" for thank you, used sparingly because the cultural baseline is that small services do not require formal thanks. "Sanchai chha?" for "are you well?", with the response "Sanchai chha." "Kati ho?" for "how much?" "Tapaaiko naam ke ho?" for "what is your name?" "Pani" for water, "khaja" for snack, "didi" and "bhai" for older sister and younger brother (used widely to address waitresses and porters respectfully).
Cultural notes: dal bhat (lentil soup, rice, vegetable curry, sometimes meat or fish) is the national meal and the trekker's fuel, eaten twice a day at almost every teahouse with unlimited refills for one fixed price. Momo (steamed Tibetan-style dumplings, usually buff or vegetable), thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup), and sel roti (sweet ring-shaped rice bread, especially at Tihar) round out the road menu. Nepal is constitutionally secular as of 2007 but the culture is overwhelmingly Hindu (81%) and Buddhist (9%) with strong syncretic overlap, especially in the Newar tradition where Hindu and Buddhist deities share temple complexes. Tihar (the 5-day festival of lights, late October or early November) and Dashain (the 15-day autumn festival, September-October) are the two largest holidays. Remove leather (belts, wallets, camera straps) before entering Hindu temples and Pashupatinath in particular; walk clockwise around stupas and chortens; do not point your feet at altars or shrines; do not pat children on the head.
Pre-trip preparation
Visa. Apply for e-visa within 15 days of arrival at nepaliport.immigration.gov.np or get visa-on-arrival at KTM, Bhairahawa (BWA), Pokhara (PKR), or any major land border. USD 30 (15 days), USD 50 (30 days), USD 125 (90 days), all multi-entry, paid in cash USD/EUR/GBP/AUD/CAD/JPY/CNY/INR.
Power. 230 V, 50 Hz, plug types C, D, and M (the same as India). Load-shedding has largely ended in Kathmandu and Pokhara since 2018, but trekking-region teahouses still rely on solar and micro-hydro and charge NPR 200-500 (USD 1.50-4) per device per hour above 3,500 m. Carry a 10,000-20,000 mAh power bank and a head torch.
SIM and connectivity. Two carriers: Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Ncell. Both sell tourist SIMs at the KTM arrivals hall for NPR 500-1,200 (USD 4-9) with 5-20 GB validity. Coverage on Annapurna and Everest is patchy above 4,000 m; Everest Link Wi-Fi on EBC route is USD 4-8 per day for 1-2 GB. Buy your SIM before leaving Kathmandu.
Health prep. Diamox prescription (1 month supply at 125-250 mg, generic in Nepal under "Diamox" or "Acetazolamide" at NPR 15-25 per tablet). Travel insurance with helicopter evacuation up to 6,000 m and trekking cover (World Nomads, IMG Patriot, or specialist providers like Global Rescue at USD 12-20 per day). Hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus, rabies pre-exposure (3 doses over 28 days), and Japanese encephalitis (for Terai stays in monsoon) are the standard travel-clinic recommendations.
Clothing. Layered system. Base layer (merino), insulated mid layer (fleece or synthetic), down jacket rated to minus 10°C minimum for EBC at night, wind- and waterproof shell, trekking trousers, gloves and a beanie. Trekking boots (broken in) and 3 pairs of merino hiking socks. Sleeping bag rated minus 10°C comfort (rentable in Kathmandu Thamel for USD 1-2 per day). Sunglasses category 3 or 4 for glacier light at Kala Patthar and Thorong La. Water purification tablets or a SteriPen, because plastic bottles are banned above the Khumbu entry gate and the ACAP boundary.
