This is the most complete WA arc you can stitch together without doubling back, and it covers desert geology, reef diving, wine country and a working convict prison in roughly two weeks.
Background
WA covers about a third of the Australian continent. Perth sits closer to Jakarta than to Sydney, which is part of why the state feels separate. Australia has 20 UNESCO World Heritage Sites; WA holds four of them: Shark Bay (1991), Purnululu / Bungle Bungles (2003), Australian Convict Sites including Fremantle Prison (2010), and Ningaloo Coast (2011). Aboriginal occupation here goes back 50,000 years through Noongar, Yamatji, Yawuru and Gija country, with European contact starting around 1616 when Dirk Hartog left a pewter plate on an island in Shark Bay. The Swan River Colony was founded in 1829 and Fremantle Prison ran from 1851 until 1991, the longest-serving prison in WA history.
The geology is older than the human story by a long way. The granite at Wave Rock dates to roughly 2.7 billion years. The stromatolites at Hamelin Pool are living mats of cyanobacteria, the same lineage of organism that first put oxygen into Earth's atmosphere about 3.5 billion years ago. The Bungle Bungles were laid down as river sediments about 350 million years ago and only revealed to the wider world in 1983, when an aerial film crew flew over them.

Tier 1 - five destinations to anchor a trip
1. Perth and Rottnest Island Quokka
Perth is the launchpad and worth two days on its own. Kings Park covers 400 hectares right on the edge of the CBD, bigger than Hyde Park in London and with a better view of the Swan River. Cottesloe Beach is the local Sunday ritual, and Fremantle Prison (UNESCO 2010, ran 1851-1991) does day tours for AUD 24 plus a torchlight tour after dark for a bit more. The convict-built limestone walls and the cell-block graffiti are the parts most people remember.
Then Rottnest Island, 19 km off the Fremantle coast. Ferry runs about AUD 109 round-trip, bike hire AUD 35 per day, and that's basically how everyone gets around since cars aren't allowed. You can ride the full 19 km island loop in a long morning, stop at Bathurst Lighthouse, and you'll meet quokkas at Thomson Bay or near the bakery. They are the world's happiest-looking marsupial and they walk straight up to you. Don't feed them. Just crouch low for the selfie.
Mid-range budget runs AUD 200-450 per day in Perth. Rottnest is a day trip if you're tight on time, two nights if you want the empty western beaches to yourself.
2. Margaret River and Cape-to-Cape Track
Margaret River is about a 3-hour drive south of Perth and produces roughly 22% of Australia's premium wine from a region that holds more than 200 wineries. Cape Mentelle planted vines here in 1970 and helped put the region on the map. Most cellar doors will run a tasting flight for AUD 15-30, and the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the locals' picks if you only have one stop.
The other half of the region is the karri and marri forest. The Cape-to-Cape Track runs 135 km between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin and you can walk a single section, like the day-walk between Prevelly and Hamelin Bay, without committing to the whole thing. Hamelin Bay has stingrays in the shallows that come right up to the sand. Stay 2-3 days if you can. One day for wineries, one for the coast, one for the forest and the limestone caves at Mammoth or Lake Cave.
3. Ningaloo Reef UNESCO 2011 + Shark Bay UNESCO 1991
These two sit on the same Coral Coast drive, roughly a 12-hour run north of Perth, so most travellers fly into Exmouth (EXM) for Ningaloo and either drive south to Shark Bay or fly the connector. It saves about three days.
Ningaloo is the world's largest fringing reef at 260 km, sitting right against the shore of Cape Range National Park. You can snorkel from the beach at Turquoise Bay without a boat. The signature experience is the whale shark swim, March through July, around AUD 480 for a full day with the spotter plane and crew. Humpback season (August to October) is when migaloo whales come through and operators run swim-with-humpback trips too.
Shark Bay was Australia's first UNESCO listing in 1991. Three things to do here, in order of priority. Monkey Mia, where wild bottlenose dolphins have been visiting the beach for fish since the 1960s (entry AUD 13). Hamelin Pool, where the stromatolites are the closest you'll ever come to seeing what life on Earth looked like 3.5 billion years ago, before flowers, before fish, before bones. And Shell Beach, where the sand isn't sand at all but 110 km of tiny white cockle shells piled metres deep, packed so tight that locals once quarried them as building blocks.
4. Pinnacles, Wave Rock, and Karijini
The desert and gorge country. The Pinnacles at Nambung National Park sit about 2 hours north of Perth and look like a yellow-sand graveyard full of limestone tombstones, some of them 4 m tall. AUD 17 per vehicle gets you in. Drive at sunset. The shadows are the whole point.
Wave Rock is a 4-hour inland drive east of Perth near Hyden, a 15 m high by 110 m long granite wave frozen in mid-curl. The granite itself is 2.7 billion years old, which is hard to feel until you put your palm on it. There's a small town and not much else, so plan it as an overnight or a long day from Perth.
Karijini National Park is the Pilbara, deep red rock, narrow gorges with cold pools at the bottom. Hancock Gorge, Weano, Joffre, Kalamina. The drive in is 1,400 km from Perth, so most people fly into Paraburdoo or pair it with a Karratha business stop. If you only ever do one Pilbara hike, pick the Hancock Gorge climb down to Kermits Pool. Bring water shoes.
5. Broome, Kimberley, and Bungle Bungles UNESCO 2003
The far north, and the hardest to reach. Fly into Broome (BME). Cable Beach runs a uninterrupted 22 km of pale sand on the Indian Ocean. Camel rides at sunset are the thing every brochure shows, and yes, they're worth doing once.
The Kimberley is the wider region: red dirt, gorges, waterfalls that only exist for half the year. The Gibb River Road (660 km of mostly unsealed driving) connects Derby to Kununurra and is the classic 4WD trip. El Questro Wilderness Park, Bell Gorge and Mitchell Falls are the headline stops.
The Bungle Bungles (Purnululu UNESCO 2003) are the orange-and-black striped beehive domes of 350-million-year-old sandstone, only properly mapped from the air in 1983. Most people see them on a scenic flight from Kununurra or Halls Creek (around AUD 400-700) because the road in is rough and a 2-3 day commitment by 4WD. Worth every dollar. The stripes come from cyanobacteria growing on the wetter bands and clay and iron oxide on the drier ones.

A meal sit-down in Perth is around AUD 25-45, a cellar-door lunch in Margaret River AUD 50-90, and the north (Broome, Exmouth) runs noticeably higher because everything is trucked in. Hotels mid-range are AUD 180-350 in the south, AUD 250-450 up north in dry season.
How to plan it
Fly into Perth (PER) for the south, Exmouth (EXM) for Ningaloo, and Broome (BME) for the north. Most international flights land in Perth. Qantas, Virgin and Rex run the domestic legs. PER to BME is about 2 hours 40 minutes by air, versus three full days by road.
Time it for May to October if you're going north of Carnarvon. The wet season turns Kimberley roads to red soup and closes everything from December to March. Perth and Margaret River are good year-round, though summer (December to February) gets hot and dry, and winter (June to August) is wet and cool but the wineries still open.
Hire a 4WD if you're doing the Gibb River Road, Karijini or Cape Range. Anywhere else, a 2WD is fine. Fuel is AUD 2.20-2.80 per litre once you're north of Geraldton, and stations can be 200 km apart.
Carry Australian dollars and a card. Most places take tap-to-pay but the Kimberley still has cash-only roadhouses.
FAQ
Is Western Australia safe for travelers?
Yes. Petty crime in Perth nightlife strips on Saturdays, snake and crocodile risk in the north (saltwater crocs in Kimberley rivers, never swim where signs warn). Sun is the bigger danger than anything else. Wear a hat.
When is the best time to visit?
May to September across the whole state. April and October are shoulder months and you'll get fewer crowds but slightly less reliable weather up north.
Do I really need 10-14 days?
If you want Perth, Margaret River and one northern UNESCO site, ten days is the floor. To do Ningaloo and the Bungle Bungles properly, push to 14. Anything less and you'll be on planes more than ground.
Can I see quokkas anywhere besides Rottnest?
A small population lives at Bald Island and parts of the south-west forest, but Rottnest is the only place where you'll reliably meet them at arm's length. Don't touch, don't feed, AUD 300+ fine.
Should I drink the tap water?
Tap water in Perth, Fremantle, Margaret River and most regional towns is fine. Some Kimberley communities are on rainwater tanks; bottled is safer there.
