Best Traditional Comorian Moroni, Mt Karthala 2,361 m, Anjouan Ylang-Ylang, Mohéli Marine Park, Coelacanth and Comoros Deep Heritage Tour Destinations

TL;DR

The Union of the Comoros packs a 2,361 m active volcano, a 1427 Friday mosque, the world's ylang-ylang capital, a marine park older than most African ones, and a fish thought extinct for 80 million years - all on three sovereign islands totalling 1,861 km². Five anchor stops:

  • Moroni and Old Friday Mosque 1427 - the working capital with a Swahili medina.
  • Mt Karthala 2,361 m - active shield volcano, world's largest volcanic crater 4 km × 3 km.
  • Anjouan and ylang-ylang fields - 70% of global ylang-ylang oil, the perfume base of Chanel No. 5.
  • Mohéli Marine Park 2001 - Comoros' first protected area, green turtles and dugongs.
  • Coelacanth and Lac Salé - the 1938 living-fossil discovery, plus crater lakes and beaches.

Plan 7-10 days.

Background

The Union of the Comoros is a 1,861 km² archipelago of about 875,000 people in the Mozambique Channel, between Madagascar and the East African coast. The country is made up of three sovereign islands - Grande Comore (Ngazidja), Anjouan (Ndzuani) and Mohéli (Mwali) - plus a fourth island, Mayotte, which has been a French overseas department since 2011 after voting to remain French at independence. France ruled the archipelago from 1841, and the Comoros declared independence on 6 July 1975 (Mayotte excepted). Since then the country has counted around 20 attempted coups, which is part of the reason tourism remains a niche, low-volume activity.

There are 0 UNESCO World Heritage sites at present; the Sultanates of the Comoros (the medinas of Moroni, Mutsamudu, Iconi and Domoni) sit on the UNESCO Tentative List. Despite the small size, Comoros produces roughly 70% of the world's ylang-ylang essential oil, the floral note in Chanel No. 5 and many other fine perfumes. The other globally recognised export is biological - the coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae), a "living fossil" first caught off East London, South Africa in 1938 and later confirmed to live around the Comoros at depths of 200-700 m.

Major Comorian characteristics:

  • Population ~875,000 across 1,861 km², three sovereign islands.
  • Mt Karthala 2,361 m - active shield volcano, last eruption 2007, caldera 4 km × 3 km.
  • Anjouan 424 km², second-largest island, ylang-ylang and clove production.
  • Languages: Shikomori (Bantu, official), Arabic and French.
  • Currency: Comorian franc (KMF), pegged at 491.97 KMF = 1 EUR.
  • Religion: Sunni Islam ~98%; modest dress expected, especially near mosques.
  • Best season: May-October (cool-dry); December-March cyclone risk.

Tier 1 - five destinations to anchor a trip

1. Moroni Capital and Old Friday Mosque 1427 + Bangwe Plateau

Moroni sits on the western coast of Grande Comore at the foot of Karthala. The Old Friday Mosque (Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi / Badjanani) was built in 1427 on the harbour, with a square minaret and a small courtyard above the dhow port; non-Muslim visitors are not allowed inside the prayer hall, but the lanes of the Medina around it are walkable. Volo Volo market sells kofia caps, vanilla, cloves and ylang-ylang oil. Itsandra Beach 6 km north and Lac Salé crater lake 25 km north are easy half-day trips from the capital.

Walking the medina is free; mosque exteriors require modest dress (covered shoulders and knees, women should carry a head covering). A taxi across town runs KMF 1,500-3,000. Mid-range budget runs €100-250 per day in Comorian terms - a guesthouse with breakfast (KMF 25,000-45,000), grilled fish at a beach paillote (KMF 2,500-4,000), and a half-day driver.

2. Mt Karthala 2,361 m and Largest Volcanic Crater World 4 km × 3 km

Mt Karthala is one of the world's largest active volcanoes by volume and has the world's largest volcanic crater by surface area at roughly 4 km × 3 km. It last erupted in April 2005, January 2006 and most recently in January 2007, when a small ash plume coated villages on the western flank. The standard climb is a 2-day return from the village of M'Vouni (or Boboni), about 1,000 m of vertical to a crater-rim camp at ~2,300 m, sleeping in tents because there is no refuge.

Expect KMF 25,000-40,000 per person for a guide (mandatory) and KMF 50,000-80,000 if you include porters, food and tents through a Moroni operator. Carry warm clothing - overnight at the rim drops to 8-12 °C even in the dry season, and the summit is often in cloud after 09:00. The descent into the caldera itself is a separate, longer trek and requires permission and a stronger party.

3. Anjouan Ndzuani 424 km² and Ylang-Ylang 70% World Production

Anjouan, local name Ndzuani, is the second-largest sovereign island at 424 km² and the most mountainous, peaking at Mont N'Tringui 1,595 m. Mutsamudu is the capital, with a 1786 citadel above a dense Swahili-Arab medina of carved doors. Domoni on the east coast is older, founded in the 9th-10th century, and is on the UNESCO Tentative List. Tatinga (Tatringa) waterfall and Dziancoundré waterfall are two-hour walks from Bambao, where you can also see colonial-era ylang-ylang distilleries - the island produces the bulk of the global ylang-ylang essential oil supply.

The inter-island ferry from Moroni to Mutsamudu costs KMF 5,000-15,000 depending on operator and weather, but the crossing is rough and frequently cancelled; AB Aviation flies the same route in 30 minutes for around KMF 60,000 one-way. Guesthouse rooms in Mutsamudu run KMF 20,000-40,000.

4. Mohéli Mwali Marine Park 2001 + Green Turtles and Dugongs

Mohéli, local name Mwali, is the smallest sovereign island and the quietest. The Mohéli Marine Park, established in 2001, was the first protected area in the Comoros and now part of a larger Mohéli National Park. The southern beaches of Itsamia and Nioumachoua are major nesting beaches for green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) - peak laying runs roughly June-August, hatchings September-November. The park's lagoons also hold a small population of dugongs and sizeable humpback whale traffic July-October.

Park entry is around KMF 10,000 (about €20) per visitor; community-run guesthouses in Itsamia and Nioumachoua run KMF 15,000-30,000 with meals included. Snorkelling boat trips around the îlots de Nioumachoua run KMF 25,000-50,000 per group.

5. Coelacanth Latimeria and various Comoros

Coelacanth: the coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae) is a "living fossil" - the first modern specimen was caught off East London, South Africa in December 1938, after the lineage was thought to have been extinct for around 80 million years. The Comoros are the species' best-known habitat; specimens live at 200-700 m depth on volcanic slopes off Grande Comore, and several preserved animals are displayed at the CNDRS museum in Moroni. Lac Salé crater lake, Itsandra Beach 6 km north of Moroni, Chomoni Beach with its black-and-white sand, the Trou du Prophète cove and Domoni's old town complete a varied cultural-tourism circuit. Most of these sights are free; the museum entry runs KMF 1,000-2,000.

Tier 2 - for longer trips

  • Combined Indian Ocean arc: Comoros, Mayotte, Madagascar, and Seychelles.
  • Combined Swahili arc: Comoros, Zanzibar, and Lamu (Kenya) + Mozambique Island.
  • Academic and craft programmes: ylang-ylang distillation tours in Bambao (Anjouan), Coelacanth research visits at the CNDRS, and the medina restoration sites of the Sultanates of Comoros tentative listing (Iconi, Moroni, Mutsamudu, Domoni).

Cost comparison

Item Budget (KMF) Mid-range (KMF) Notes

Object prices: Comorian moderate-expensive - meals KMF 1,500-5,000, hotels KMF 25,000-90,000.

How to plan it

Fly Prince Said Ibrahim International (HAH), Moroni - connections via Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Dar es Salaam or Paris (via Mayotte/Réunion). AB Aviation handles inter-island hops Moroni-Mutsamudu and Moroni-Fomboni.

Time around May-October for dry-cool weather and lowest cyclone risk; December-March is cyclone season and many beach lodges close.

Shikomori, Arabic, and French are widely used in tourism; basic French is the most useful traveller language. English is limited outside upper-end Moroni hotels.

Carry KMF, euros widely, and cards limited - ATMs exist in Moroni and Mutsamudu but fail often, and most guesthouses are cash-only. Bring euros to change at BIC or Exim banks.

FAQ

Is Comorian safe for travelers? Generally yes - among the safer Indian Ocean destinations for street crime, but check your government travel advisory before booking, as political flare-ups have happened.

When is the best time to visit? May to October for dry, cooler weather; July-September is peak for whales and turtles around Mohéli.

Are these traditions changing? Heritage continuation is strong - Friday mosque attendance, the Grand Mariage (anda) ceremonies and ylang-ylang distillation are still active, though the ylang-ylang industry faces price pressure from Madagascar.

Should I drink the tap water? No - bottled water always; a 1.5 L bottle runs KMF 500-800.
