Background

Palawan stretches for roughly 450 km between Mindoro and Borneo and is split into more than 1,700 islands and islets. The provincial capital Puerto Princesa sits on the main island; El Nido and Taytay anchor the north; Coron and the Calamian group sit further north still on Busuanga; Balabac trails off to the south near the Sulu Sea. The geology is mostly Cretaceous limestone karst, which is why El Nido and Coron are full of jagged cliffs, hidden lagoons, and freshwater lakes lifted above the sea.

El Nido Bacuit Bay holds 45 named limestone karst islands. Boat tours are organized by the local tourism office into four standard circuits: Tour A (Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Shimizu Island, 7 Commando Beach), Tour B (Snake Island sandbar, Pinagbuyutan, Cudugnon Cave), Tour C (Hidden Beach, Matinloc Shrine, Secret Beach, Talisay Beach), and Tour D (Cadlao Lagoon, Paradise Beach, Natnat Beach). Tour A and Tour C are the two most photographed and the ones most travelers prioritize.

Coron sits on Busuanga in the Calamian group. Kayangan Lake is widely cited as one of the cleanest lakes in the Philippines, with visibility often above 25 m through brackish water held inside a limestone bowl. Twin Lagoon is reached through a low limestone arch at low tide or a ladder at high tide, and Barracuda Lake is a thermocline dive where temperature jumps from about 28 C to over 38 C as you descend. Coron's other claim to fame is its 12 Japanese WWII shipwrecks, sunk by US Navy carrier aircraft on 24 September 1944, including the Irako, Akitsushima, Olympia Maru, Okikawa Maru, Kogyo Maru, and Morazan Maru. Most lie between 10 m and 40 m and are dive-accessible.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park protects 5,754 hectares of karst and lowland forest on the west coast of the main island. The underground river runs 8.2 km, of which the lower 4.3 km is navigable by paddle boat through cathedral-sized limestone chambers. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1999 and it was named one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2012.

Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park lies in the middle of the Sulu Sea, about 150 km southeast of Puerto Princesa. It covers 970 km² across two atolls and the small Jessie Beazley Reef. It holds about 600 species of fish and 360 species of coral, and it is reachable only by liveaboard between mid-March and mid-June, when the seas are calm enough to cross. UNESCO listed it in 1993.

Other parts of the province add depth. Honda Bay outside Puerto Princesa offers easy island-hopping across five islets including Snake Island, Pandan Island, Cowrie Island, Luli Island, and Starfish Island. Sabang on the west coast is the gateway to the Underground River and also has a good mangrove paddle. San Vicente, halfway up the main island, is home to Long Beach, a 14 km uninterrupted strip of white sand widely cited as the second longest white sand beach in Asia. Balabac, far to the south, is a string of small islands near the marine border with Malaysia, with sea turtle nesting beaches, pink-sand bars, and very little tourism infrastructure.

How to plan it

Fly into the right airport. Manila MNL is the gateway. From Manila, AirAsia and Cebu Pacific run direct flights to Puerto Princesa PPS (1 hour 25 minutes), El Nido ENI via AirSWIFT only (1 hour 15 minutes, smaller ATR-72 plane, often pricier), and Coron Busuanga USU (1 hour). Cebu and Clark also have direct flights to PPS.

Combine the islands by van plus boat. Puerto Princesa to El Nido is a 5-6 hour shared van for around PHP 700. El Nido to Coron is a 4-hour fast ferry on Montenegro or AtoB for around PHP 1,800 in season (October to May). Out of season, that ferry runs intermittently and most travelers fly Manila to USU separately.

Time your trip carefully. Dry season runs December to May, peak January to April. Tubbataha is mid-March to mid-June only. The southwest monsoon hits June to October and El Nido boat tours can be cancelled for days. Christmas to New Year and Holy Week are the most expensive weeks of the year.

English is the working language for tourism across Palawan, and Tagalog plus the local languages Cuyonon and Tagbanua are also spoken.

Carry pesos and small bills. Card acceptance is patchy outside major hotels. ATMs in El Nido and Coron run dry on long weekends.

Is Palawan safe for travelers?

Yes. The main tourism corridor from Puerto Princesa to El Nido and across to Coron is secure and well-traveled. Far southern Palawan near Balabac is also safe but very remote. Watch for boat conditions during southwest monsoon and confirm life jackets on every island-hopping trip.

When is the best time to visit?

January to May is the dry, calm season. March to early June is the only window for Tubbataha liveaboards. June to October brings rain and occasional canceled boat tours, but it is also the cheapest time and the islands are noticeably emptier.

Do I need to book the Underground River permit in advance?

Yes. Daily permits are capped and high-season slots disappear 3-7 days ahead. Most Puerto Princesa hotels can arrange the permit and the round-trip transfer to Sabang for a small service fee.

Can I see all of Palawan in one week?

You can hit El Nido, Coron, and the Underground River in 7-8 days if flights cooperate. For Tubbataha or Balabac as well, plan 12-14 days.

Should I drink the tap water?

No. Stick to bottled or filtered water across Palawan. Most hotels provide refill stations.
