Best Two-Day Ooty and Coonoor Trip From Bangalore

I've driven from Bangalore to Ooty four times in the last three years, and the trip I keep coming back to is the short one. Two days, one night, with the second half of Day 2 spent in Coonoor on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. People in my office plan five-day Nilgiri itineraries that try to cram Mudumalai, Kotagiri, Avalanche Lake and Pykara Falls into one trip, then come back exhausted. The shorter version, done honestly, is the one that actually works.

This is the version I run when a friend visits from Hyderabad on a Friday evening and has to fly back Sunday night. I'll share the INR prices I paid in February 2026, the train booking trick that nobody tells you, and the one decision (Ooty stay vs Coonoor stay) that changes the whole feel of the weekend.

Why Two Days Is Enough For Ooty And Coonoor

Bangalore to Ooty is 270 km. On paper that sounds like a four-hour drive. In practice it's closer to seven hours including the slow stretch through Bandipur, the climb up the 36 hairpin bends near Gudalur, and at least one chai stop at Kamat Lokaruchi outside Mysore. So Day 1 is essentially a driving day with a check-in and one short outing in the evening.

Day 2 is the real day. You wake up early, ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway down to Coonoor, see Sim's Park and the viewpoints, eat a long lunch at a tea estate, and drive back to Bangalore. The reason this works as a two-day plan is that Ooty town itself doesn't need a full day. The Botanical Garden, Doddabetta Peak and the lake are done in three to four hours. The real depth in the Nilgiris is in Coonoor and the surrounding tea estates.

Bangalore To Ooty: The Real Drive Numbers

The route I drive every time is NH-275 from Bangalore to Mysore (140 km, three hours), then NH-766 through Bandipur Tiger Reserve into Tamil Nadu, exiting near Gudalur and climbing to Ooty (130 km, three to four hours). Total fuel cost in my Hyundai Verna is about INR 2,400 round trip at current diesel prices.

Two things I've learned the hard way:

Bandipur closes at 9 PM and opens at 6 AM. Vehicle traffic is banned through the tiger reserve overnight to protect wildlife. If you leave Bangalore after 2 PM on Friday, you'll likely sit at the Bandipur gate near Gundlupet for an hour or take the longer Wayanad detour. I leave by 6 AM Saturday or by 11 AM Friday to avoid this.
The 36 hairpin bends after Gudalur aren't difficult, but they're slow. Allow 90 minutes from Gudalur to Ooty even though it's only 50 km. If anyone in the car gets motion sick, this is the section where it happens.

If you don't want to drive, here are the real public transport options I've used:

KSRTC Airavat (Volvo AC sleeper): INR 750 to 1,100 one way. Departs Majestic in Bangalore around 9 PM, arrives Ooty around 6 AM. Book on the KSRTC website (ksrtc.in), not third-party apps.
Private Volvo (KTC, SRS): INR 900 to 1,400. Slightly better seats, similar timing.
Taxi one-way from Bangalore: INR 5,500 to 7,500 for a sedan, INR 7,500 to 9,500 for an Innova. I use this when I'm with three or four people and want to stop for photos along the way.

Day 1 Plan: Drive, Check In, Botanical Garden

Here's how Day 1 actually goes if you leave Bangalore at 6 AM Saturday.

6:00 AM - Leave Bangalore via Mysore Road.
9:30 AM - Breakfast at Kamat Lokaruchi (Mysore bypass). Order the neer dosa with kori gassi. About INR 350 for two.
12:30 PM - Cross Bandipur Tiger Reserve. Speed limit 40 km/h, enforced. Don't stop the vehicle inside the reserve.
2:30 PM . Reach Ooty, check in, quick lunch.
4:00 PM , Government Botanical Garden. Entry INR 30 (INR 15 children, INR 50 camera). 55 acres, laid out in 1848. Two hours at an easy pace. The Italian-style terrace and the 20-million-year-old fossilised tree trunk are worth finding.
6:30 PM - Walk the Ooty Lake area. Boating INR 200 to 600. The lake is the weakest sight in Ooty. I skip it and do tea at Modern Stores instead.
8:00 PM , Dinner at Earl's Secret or Hotel Junior Kuppanna for Chettinad. INR 600 to 1,200 for two.

If you arrive late (Friday night drive), the entire Day 1 plan shifts to Sunday morning and Day 2 becomes Sunday. Same content, different sequence.

Doddabetta Peak: Worth The Climb

Doddabetta is the highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 metres, 10 km outside Ooty. Entry is INR 7, and the telescope at the top costs an additional INR 10 per person.

You drive up, walk the last 200 metres to the summit, look through the telescope at the tea estates and on a clear morning at the plains of Coimbatore, and you're done in 45 minutes. It's the cheapest viewpoint experience anywhere in South India.

Go between 7 AM and 10 AM. By midday the cloud cover rolls in and you see nothing. I learned this on my first trip when I went at 3 PM and stared at white fog for 20 minutes.

If you've a car, combine Doddabetta with the Tea Factory and Tea Museum on the same road (INR 10 entry, free tea tasting). This adds another hour before catching the train to Coonoor in the afternoon.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway: Booking And Reality

This is the core experience of the trip. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the Mountain Railways of India listing along with Darjeeling and Kalka-Shimla. It's the only rack railway in India, opened in 1908, and still uses the original Swiss Abt rack-and-pinion system on the steep gradients between Mettupalayam and Coonoor.

For a two-day trip you'll not do the full Mettupalayam-Ooty route (that's six hours and starts at 7 AM from Mettupalayam). You want the Ooty to Coonoor leg, which is 19 km and takes about 80 minutes. There are typically four trains per day in each direction. The morning departures from Ooty are around 9 AM, 9:15 AM and a midday one around noon.

Pricing as of 2026:

Second class: INR 50
First class: INR 270 to 295

Both classes have bench seating and open windows. First class is in a separate coach with fewer passengers and slightly better-padded seats. I usually book second class because the windows and view are identical, and the carriage atmosphere is more local.

The booking trick nobody tells you: The Ooty to Coonoor train sells out 60 days in advance during peak season (April-June, October-November). You can't walk up and buy a ticket on the day. You must book on IRCTC (irctc.co.in) the moment the 60-day window opens. Set a calendar reminder. Train number 56136 is the standard Ooty-Coonoor service to look for.

If IRCTC is sold out, the alternative is to take the train in the opposite direction (Coonoor to Ooty in the morning) which sometimes has tatkal availability, or simply take a taxi to Coonoor (INR 800 one way) and ride the train back to Ooty in the afternoon, which is usually less booked.

Day 2 Plan: Train To Coonoor And Sim's Park

Here's the Sunday plan that works.

7:00 AM - Breakfast at hotel. Check out and store luggage at reception (most hotels allow this until 6 PM).
8:30 AM . Drive to Ooty railway station, park car (INR 100 day parking).
9:15 AM . Board the Nilgiri Mountain Railway to Coonoor. Sit on the right side of the carriage going down for the best valley views.
10:35 AM . Arrive Coonoor. Hire a local taxi for the day, INR 1,800 to 2,400 for four hours covering Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose, Lamb's Rock and a tea estate.
11:00 AM . Sim's Park. INR 30 entry. About 12 hectares, more wooded and less manicured than the Ooty Botanical Garden. The Lily Pond and the rare Rudraksha tree are the things to find. About 90 minutes.
12:45 PM - Drive to Dolphin's Nose viewpoint (INR 10 entry, 12 km from Coonoor). The view drops into Catherine Falls and the Coimbatore plains. On a clear day spectacular, on a foggy day a complete waste. Lamb's Rock is on the same road, 5 km before Dolphin's Nose, also INR 10. Combine both.
2:30 PM , Late lunch at Highfield Tea Estate or La Belle Vie's restaurant. Budget INR 800 to 1,500 for two with a tea factory tour included at Highfield (INR 100 per person).
4:30 PM , Return to Ooty by taxi (INR 800) or the late afternoon train if you booked it. Pick up car, start drive to Bangalore.

If you started this Sunday morning rather than Saturday morning, you would do the drive back Monday morning instead and add Lamb's Rock and Catherine Falls in more depth.

Coonoor Vs Ooty: Where Should You Actually Stay?

This is the decision that shapes the trip. I've stayed in both, twice each.

Stay in Ooty if: This is your first Nilgiris trip. You want to be close to the Botanical Garden, Doddabetta and the train station. You're budget-conscious and want options under INR 2,000.

Stay in Coonoor if: You've been to Ooty before. You want a quieter base, tea estates, walking trails and silence. You're willing to drive 20 minutes for the train. Coonoor stays trend more boutique and more expensive.

My recommendation for a first-time two-day trip: stay in Ooty on Saturday night for logistics. If you come back for three nights, switch to Coonoor.

Where To Stay: Real Hotels And Real Prices

Acres Wild is a 22-acre organic farm that makes its own cheese, runs short cheesemaking workshops (INR 3,500 per person, book ahead), and feels nothing like a hotel. If your budget allows it, do it. Otherwise La Belle Vie at INR 6,500 is the better value heritage stay in Coonoor.

The YWCA at INR 1,500 is the best budget option in either town. 1920s building, clean sheets, INR 200 breakfast. Bring earplugs because the floors creak.

What To Eat In Ooty And Coonoor

The Nilgiris food scene isn't a destination on its own, but there are four places I always come back to.

Earl's Secret, Fern Hill, Ooty , Continental and Indian fusion. The pepper steak is the order. INR 1,200 for two with a drink.
Hotel Junior Kuppanna, Ooty , Chettinad. The Kola Urundai (mutton balls) is the order. INR 600 for two.
Modern Stores, Charing Cross, Ooty , Cake shop with homemade chocolates and tea. The plum cake is real, not the supermarket version. INR 250 for a slice and chai.
La Belle Vie, Coonoor , Even if you don't stay there, the tasting menu is worth the trip. INR 1,800 per person.

Best Months To Plan This Trip

I've been to Ooty in February, April, June, October and December. Here's what I've seen.

February to mid-March: My favourite. Dry, cool (10-22°C), the flower show is sometimes on (May usually), no rain, clear views from Doddabetta. This is the month to visit.
April to early June: Peak summer in the plains drives Indian tourists up. Ooty is full, hotels double their rates, the train sells out 60 days ahead. Beautiful weather but expensive and crowded.
June to September: Monsoon. Heavy fog, leeches on the trails, viewpoints often invisible. I would not go.
October to November: Post-monsoon. Everything is green, waterfalls are full, fewer crowds than April. This is the second-best window.
December to January: Cold (can drop to 4°C at night), some days clear and beautiful, some days completely fogged in. Tea estates look best in this season.

What To Pack For Two Days In The Nilgiris

I've made the mistake of underpacking warm clothes twice. Even in March the Coonoor mornings drop to 8°C and the train ride at 9 AM is cold with the windows open.

One light jacket or hoodie (mandatory, even in summer)
Comfortable walking shoes (the gardens are on slopes)
Sunglasses (the high-altitude sun is harsh)
A poncho or compact umbrella (Coonoor gets surprise drizzles)
ID for the train booking (IRCTC requires the same name and ID as the booking)
Cash, around INR 3,000 to 5,000 (smaller shops in Coonoor don't always accept UPI)

Common Mistakes I See People Make

Trying to do Mudumalai on the same trip. Mudumalai needs its own day. If you stop the car in the tiger reserve for a "quick safari" you'll be fined.
Driving back to Bangalore on Sunday night. You arrive at 1 AM exhausted. Either leave Sunday morning early after a quick Coonoor breakfast, or take Monday off and leave Sunday at 4 PM with a Mysore overnight.
Booking the train at the station. Counter sales for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway are minimal, especially in peak season. IRCTC booking opens 60 days ahead and you should book on day one.
Visiting Doddabetta after lunch. You'll see fog and white walls. Go before 10 AM.
Skipping Coonoor. Most first-time visitors stay in Ooty and never make it to Coonoor. The Coonoor side of the Nilgiris is the better half. Plan for it from Day 1.

Is two days really enough for Ooty and Coonoor?

Yes, if you accept that Day 1 is a travel day with one short evening outing. The full Day 2 covers the train, Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose and a tea estate. And if you want to add Pykara Falls, Avalanche Lake or Mudumalai, add a third day.

How much does the whole trip cost from Bangalore for two people?

Driving your own car, mid-range hotel: INR 12,000 to 16,000 total including fuel, two nights of stay, all entry tickets, train tickets and meals. Add INR 8,000 if you take a private taxi instead of driving. Less if you take the KSRTC bus and stay at the YWCA, you can do it for under INR 6,000 per couple.

Can I do this trip without a car?

How early should I book the Nilgiri Mountain Railway tickets?

The booking window opens 60 days before travel. For weekend travel between February and June, book on day one of the window. So for weekday travel in October-November you can usually book within two weeks of travel.

Is the road from Bangalore safe at night?

NH-275 to Mysore is fine at night. NH-766 through Bandipur Tiger Reserve is closed to vehicles between 9 PM and 6 AM. Plus plan to be past Gundlupet before 8:30 PM or wait until 6 AM.

Will I see tigers in Bandipur on the drive through?

Almost never. The drive-through happens at 40 km/h with traffic and you're not allowed to stop. Elephants and spotted deer are common sightings. For tigers you need a proper morning safari from inside the reserve.

Is Coonoor better than Ooty?

For a quieter, less commercial experience, yes. Coonoor has fewer tourists, better tea estates, and more boutique stays. Ooty has more attractions, easier logistics and cheaper rooms. For a first-time two-day trip, base in Ooty and visit Coonoor for one day. And for a return visit, base in Coonoor.

What about altitude sickness?

Ooty sits at 2,240 metres and Doddabetta at 2,637 metres. This is well below the altitude where most people feel sickness. If you've heart or breathing conditions you might notice mild breathlessness on stairs, but it isn't a real concern for most travellers.

My Honest Take

I've done a lot of weekends out of Bangalore. So coorg, Chikmagalur, Wayanad, Yelagiri, Yercaud. The Ooty-Coonoor weekend is the one I recommend most often because it bundles three things into 48 hours: a serious mountain drive through one of India's best tiger reserves, a UNESCO World Heritage train ride that costs less than a coffee, and a quieter half-day in Coonoor that most people miss.

The mistake is treating Ooty as the whole trip. Ooty is the warm-up. Coonoor is the actual destination. Plan around the train booking, base in Ooty for logistics, and give Coonoor at least four hours on Day 2.
