I've been doing the Nairobi to USA run for nearly nine years now, visiting a cousin in Atlanta and a brother who moved to Houston back in 2018. The Two Realistic Departure Airports

If you're flying to the USA from Kenya, you're flying from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. Mombasa (MBA) handles flights to Dubai, Doha, Addis, and a few European seasonal charters, but it doesn't have direct connections to the USA. Plus eldoret (EDL) is even more limited.

I've tried the Mombasa start three times. And each time the saving was either zero or negative once I added the NBO connector. Unless you value the convenience over money, fly to Nairobi first, even if it means a domestic hop on Jambojet or Kenya Airways the day before.

Route Options at a Glance

There are essentially seven serious options to get from Nairobi to a major US gateway. One direct, the rest with a single stop. I'm not counting two-stop itineraries because the savings rarely justify the extra exhaustion and missed-connection risk.

Prices are economy round-trip, taxes included, sourced from my own bookings between January 2025 and March 2026 plus the live searches I ran while writing this. Kenya Airways Direct: The Pride Tax

Kenya Airways launched the NBO to JFK direct route in October 2018 and it remains the only nonstop between Sub-Saharan Africa and the East Coast. About 15 hours westbound, just under 14 eastbound thanks to tailwinds. I've flown it five times.

The honest assessment: the plane is a 787-8, the seats are normal economy 3-3-3, the food is acceptable Kenyan-international fusion, and the cabin crew is genuinely warm. It isn't luxury, it's just direct. That directness is what costs you. Even in low season the round-trip rarely dips below USD 1,200, and during December I've seen it touch USD 2,400.

Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa: My Default Cheap Option

Turkish Airlines via Istanbul: Best Value for Comfort

Turkish runs NBO to Istanbul (IST) twice daily, with onward connections to JFK, IAD, ORD, LAX, SFO, MIA, and IAH. Total trip time is 21 to 25 hours.

What makes Turkish the sweet spot is the new IST airport. If your layover is over six hours, Turkish gives you a free city tour or hotel night. Plus the economy meal service onboard is the best I've had outside the Gulf carriers.

Pricing in shoulder months sits between USD 850 and USD 1,200 round-trip. I paid USD 891 in June 2025 for NBO-IST-JFK return. Even peak December usually stays under USD 1,700.

Qatar Airways via Doha: When You Want Service

Qatar is consistently rated one of the world's best airlines and the experience matches the rating. The NBO to DOH leg is about 5 hours, then DOH to the US runs 13 to 16 hours depending on destination. Hamad International in Doha is genuinely the most comfortable transit airport I've used, and the airline's privilege club status earns are generous.

Round-trip pricing runs USD 850 to USD 1,200 in low season, USD 1,500 to USD 1,800 in peak. I've paid as low as USD 877 to JFK in April 2025 and as high as USD 1,766 in late December. Emirates via Dubai: Comfortable but Pricier

Emirates flies NBO to DXB three times daily and from DXB connects to JFK, EWR, IAD, ORD, LAX, SFO, BOS, MIA, and IAH. The A380 on certain US routes makes for a noticeably smoother long-haul ride.

Pricing wise, Emirates has shifted upward over the past two years. Round-trip used to start around USD 850 in low season, but in 2025 and 2026 I've struggled to find anything below USD 900, and December consistently breaks USD 1,900. And the product is excellent, the lounges are world-leading if you've status, and Dubai is a genuinely interesting layover city if you're stopping for 12 hours or more.

When I book Emirates: if I want a stopover in Dubai, if I'm travelling with my wife who prefers their crew, or if a specific sale makes it competitive with Qatar.

KLM via Amsterdam and Air France via Paris: The European Routes

KLM and Air France are both SkyTeam partners with Kenya Airways, which means earning miles is straightforward if you fly the Kenyan flag carrier sometimes. KLM operates NBO to Amsterdam (AMS) daily, and from AMS you can connect to almost every major US gateway. Air France runs NBO to CDG with similar onward connectivity.

The European routes are usually slightly more expensive than the Gulf or Turkish options. So kLM round-trip runs USD 1,000 to USD 2,300, Air France USD 950 to USD 2,200. The advantage is the European layover if you want to stretch a trip into a multi-destination break, and the baggage handling reliability at AMS and CDG is significantly better than what you get at busier Gulf hubs.

One annoying detail: both KLM and Air France in basic economy include only 1 piece of 23kg checked baggage on Africa-US routes. Adding a second bag costs USD 100 to USD 200 each way, which can easily wipe out the price advantage.

Booking Timing: When to Actually Click Buy

After tracking my own bookings and a spreadsheet of friends' bookings for over four years, the pattern is consistent.

The cheapest window for NBO to USA is 8 to 12 weeks before departure. Earlier than 12 weeks and the airlines have not yet released their cheaper inventory. Later than 8 weeks and prices start climbing weekly, sometimes daily in the final 3 weeks.

Baggage Reality Check

Most carriers on the NBO to USA route include 2 pieces of 23kg checked baggage on US-bound flights in standard economy. The exceptions matter. KLM, Air France, and certain Lufthansa fares include only 1 piece. flydubai code-shares can sneak in with reduced baggage allowance even when the marketing says Emirates.

Realistically, the only viable Mombasa-origin option is to fly Kenya Airways or Jambojet to NBO and pick up your international connection there. Sometimes Qatar offers MBA to DOH directly with onward to USA, but the connection windows are usually unfavourable and the saving versus a separate Mombasa-Nairobi-Doha-USA itinerary is small.

Eldoret has even fewer options. EDL to NBO via Kenya Airways or Jambojet is the only real path, and you should plan a same-day connection only if your domestic flight is at least 4 hours before your international departure.
