Cheapest Shortest Way From London to Auckland, New Zealand

Browse more guides: New Zealand travel | Oceania destinations

I keep getting the same email from friends in London who want to visit family in Auckland: "Saikiran, what is the cheapest way and the shortest way, and please tell me they're the same flight." They aren't the same flight, almost ever. After helping six people book this route in the last fourteen months, and after doing it myself in September 2025, I've a stable answer. London to Auckland is one of the longest commercial city pairs sold on a single ticket. But there's no nonstop yet, the carriers know it, and the pricing reflects both the distance and the lack of choice.

This piece is the long version of the answer I send those friends. Real numbers in pounds, dollars, and New Zealand dollars. But real layover times. The hubs I would actually pick versus the ones I would only take if the price gap was massive. And a clear-eyed look at Qantas Project Sunrise.

The honest distance problem

The great-circle distance from London to Auckland is about 18,330 kilometres, or 11,390 miles. No twin-aisle aircraft in regular passenger service today can carry a profitable payload that far against typical winds in both directions year-round. The closest comparison is Qantas QF9 Perth to London at about 14,500 kilometres, which already pushes the 787-9 to its weight-restricted limits in winter. London to Auckland is roughly four thousand kilometres further. So every itinerary today puts a hub in the middle, and the choice of hub decides almost everything else: total elapsed time, fare, layover comfort, and whether you need a transit visa.

Project Sunrise: the direct flight that is still not flying

Qantas announced Project Sunrise in 2017 to fly Sydney to London and Auckland to New York nonstop. The aircraft is the Airbus A350-1000 ULR, with an extra centre fuel tank pushing range to roughly 18,000 kilometres. Original entry into service was 2025. That slipped to late 2026, then publicly to mid 2027, and the last operational update in early 2026 hinted at further delay because of certification work on the centre tank and Trent XWB-97 maintenance intervals.

Sydney to London is the one I track because if Qantas ever flies it, an LHR-AKL connection through SYD on a single Qantas ticket becomes attractive. Cabins are rumored at 238 seats: 6 first, 52 business, 40 premium economy, 140 economy. But pricing target is a 20 percent premium over connecting fares, so GBP 1,800 to GBP 3,400 economy. I would not hold a 2026 trip waiting for it.

The five real one-stop options today

These are the five routings I've actually flown, booked for friends, or priced repeatedly in the last twelve months. All times are total elapsed including layover, all fares are typical round-trip economy from London with at least 30 days notice and outside Christmas peak.

  1. Singapore Airlines via SIN: LHR-SIN 13h, SIN-AKL 10h, total 28h. GBP 1,200 to GBP 2,400. 2. Emirates via DXB: LGW or LHR to DXB 7h, DXB-AKL 17h nonstop, total 30h. GBP 1,100 to GBP 2,300. 3. Qatar Airways via DOH: LHR-DOH 7h, DOH-AKL 18h nonstop, total 30h. GBP 1,150 to GBP 2,400. 4. Cathay Pacific via HKG: LHR-HKG 12h, HKG-AKL 11h, total 27h. GBP 1,300 to GBP 2,500. 5. Air New Zealand via LAX: LHR-LAX 11h, LAX-AKL 13h, total 28h. GBP 1,400 to GBP 2,700. US transit visa required for Indian passport holders and several others.

In April 2025 I paid GBP 1,287 round-trip on Singapore Airlines LHR-SIN-AKL with a seven-hour Changi layover each way. That's the sweet spot fare and the routing I default to when someone asks me the one-line answer.

Comparison table at a glance

Carrier Hub Total hours GBP low to peak Verdict
Singapore Airlines SIN 28h 1,200 to 2,400 Best balance of price, time, layover quality
Emirates DXB 30h 1,100 to 2,300 Cheapest reliable mainline, longest second leg
Qatar Airways DOH 30h 1,150 to 2,400 Excellent business class, tight DOH connections sometimes
Cathay Pacific HKG 27h 1,300 to 2,500 Shortest total time, HKG transit straightforward
Air New Zealand LAX 28h 1,400 to 2,700 Convenient if connecting onward in NZ, US visa hurdle
Scoot plus partner SIN or PER 32h to 38h 950 to 1,800 Cheapest two-stop, baggage and meal extras add up
Qantas Project Sunrise none direct ~22h target 1,800 to 3,400 expected Not flying yet, watch 2027

Cathay through Hong Kong is technically the shortest at 27 hours including layover, and on a clean schedule it can come down to 25h 30m. Singapore is one hour longer but consistently cheaper. Emirates and Qatar both run that monster 17 to 18 hour second leg from the Gulf to Auckland and the in-cabin fatigue is real even in a good seat.

Two-stop bargain routings worth knowing

If the goal is the lowest GBP number and you can sacrifice eight to ten hours, two-stop combinations help. Scoot sells LHR via SIN with a Singapore Airlines feeder, then SIN-AKL. I've seen GBP 950 round-trip in May shoulder. Another option is LHR-PER on Qantas with separate PER-AKL on Air New Zealand or Jetstar; as a self-transfer with 16+ hours in Perth this can drop to GBP 1,050.

The catch with self-transfer is that one missed flight is your problem. I'll only do it with at least 18 hours buffer and a refundable hotel near the second hub. But i pay the extra GBP 150 for a single-ticket itinerary every time.

For readers who add a Southeast Asia stopover into the same trip, the maths gets more interesting. But singapore is the natural overnight halt, and from there continuing to Bangkok is cheap. I wrote up the connector pricing in cheapest flights from Europe to Thailand booking tips, and a full ground itinerary in the best 2 week travel itinerary in Thailand.

When to fly: the months that move the price

Auckland is in the southern hemisphere so the seasons are inverted from London. NZ summer is December through February, also Christmas and school holiday peak. Fares spike: round-trip the week before Christmas regularly sells for GBP 2,200 plus, and last-minute tickets in early December 2025 hit GBP 2,650 on Emirates and GBP 2,800 on Singapore.

The shoulder windows I aim for are late April to mid May, and September through mid November. April-May 2025 I paid GBP 1,287 on Singapore Airlines. October 2024 a friend paid GBP 1,150 on Emirates. So june through August is a third option: winter in NZ, often under GBP 1,200, but expect 14 degrees Celsius daytime, 7 at night, plenty of rain in Auckland.

Calendar fare alerts on Skyscanner catch the dips. I set three alerts: LHR to AKL, LGW to AKL, and London to AKL flexible.

Layover strategy: the difference between two trips and one ordeal

A 90-minute connection in Singapore sounds efficient and is often a mistake. If LHR-SIN is delayed an hour, which happens roughly one flight in five in my log of fourteen segments since 2022, you miss the onward and Singapore Airlines puts you on the next day's flight. On a 90-minute connection your bag may also not make it. I shoot for six to eight hours minimum, ideally overnight 12 to 14 hours.

Changi is the most layover-friendly hub right now. So the free Singapore city tour runs four to five times a day, takes 2.5 hours, requires a same-day onward boarding pass and a passport eligible for visa-free entry. Indian passport holders qualify under the VFTF program with a valid onward ticket and onward visa. NZ counts. I've used the tour twice; airport showers in T3 are GBP 8.

Doha and Dubai are functional but less interesting. Hong Kong is fine and HKG airport hotels are easy. LAX is the worst layover of the five because of US Customs-then-recheck flow, which adds an hour minimum.

What you actually pay on the ground in Auckland

Auckland is expensive by global standards. A reasonable city centre hotel in April runs NZD 220 to NZD 320 per night, which is roughly GBP 105 to GBP 152 at the April 2026 rate of about 2.10 NZD per GBP. A hostel dorm bed is NZD 55 to NZD 80. Eating out costs NZD 25 to NZD 45 for a main at a normal restaurant in Ponsonby or the CBD. SkyBus from the airport into the city is NZD 18 one-way, NZD 32 return, takes 45 minutes. An Uber from AKL to the CBD is NZD 55 to NZD 80 depending on time of day.

For a wider sense of what high-cost destinations look like I went through a few of these comparisons in most expensive city or country visited and trip budget, and Auckland sits squarely in the upper-middle bracket alongside Sydney and Reykjavik.

NZeTA, IVL, and the small fees that catch travellers out

Every UK passport holder and every Indian passport holder going to New Zealand for tourism needs the NZeTA, the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority. It costs NZD 23 if you apply through the official immigration mobile app and NZD 17 if you apply via the website. On top of that you pay the IVL, the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, currently NZD 100 since the increase in October 2024. Combined that's about GBP 58 added to the trip cost per person, valid for two years and multiple entries.

Apply at least 72 hours before departure. Mine took 11 minutes to come back the first time and 36 hours the second, so the variance is real. The form needs your passport, a credit card, and a recent photo. The airline will check it at LHR check-in and the gate, so don't skip it.

Australia's transit position is similar in spirit. If you route via SYD or MEL on the Qantas one-ticket option I keep watching for, you need an Australian ETA even for transit longer than eight hours that requires you to clear immigration. Plus flights connecting in under eight hours through the international terminal at SYD without leaving sterile don't need it, but Qantas will tell you on the day. For a sense of what is on the Australian side of that connection I pulled together the most beautiful beaches in Australia for tourists.

Transit visa rules by hub, the short version

Singapore: Indian passport holders qualify for VFTF if conditions are met. UK passport holders don't need any transit visa. EU passport holders the same.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi: UAE allows international transit without a visa as long as you stay airside. If you want to leave the airport on a layover, a 48-hour or 96-hour transit visa via Emirates or Etihad costs about USD 30 to USD 60 and approval takes 24 to 48 hours.

Doha: Qatar runs a free transit visa program that lets you leave the airport for 6 to 96 hours. Apply through the Discover Qatar website. But approval is usually within 24 hours.

Hong Kong: most Western passports including UK get 90 days visa-free. Indian passport holders need a Pre-arrival Registration which is free and online, takes a couple of days.

LAX: US transit means clearing US immigration. Indian passport holders need either a B1/B2 visa or a C-1 transit visa. If you don't already have a US visa don't route through LAX. The same applies for several other passports including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and most Sub-Saharan African passports. UK passport holders use ESTA, which is USD 21 and takes minutes.

Jet lag, the real cost of the route

LHR to AKL is a 12 hour time zone shift in April-October and 13 hours in NZ summer because of daylight saving. That's the maximum possible time difference on Earth. I've flown this six times now and the pattern is clear: westbound LHR to AKL is harder than the return because you're losing day-night cycles in the wrong direction.

What works for me, and what I tell every friend asking: pick a flight that lands in Auckland in the late afternoon or early evening local time. That gives you four to six hours of forced sunlight before bed, you sleep through the night more or less, and you're back on local time by day three. The Singapore Airlines SQ285 schedule lands AKL around 23:55 which I find harder than the Cathay CX111 landing around 16:00 local. And pick the schedule that lands in daylight even if it costs GBP 80 more.

Caffeine cutoff at noon for the first two days. No alcohol on the flight. One melatonin 0.5mg about 90 minutes before local bedtime in Auckland. Drink water aggressively, two litres minimum on the SIN-AKL leg. So this is unglamorous advice and it works.

For shorter, easier alternatives if Auckland is a stretch this trip, I've written up some less time-zone-brutal options in best places to visit outside London in one week itinerary, which keeps you under three time zones.

Baggage, seats, and what the cheap fare actually includes

Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qatar, Cathay, and Air NZ all include 30kg checked baggage on standard economy fares to AKL, plus 7kg cabin. And this matters because the comparable Scoot or self-transfer cheapest fare often includes 0kg checked. Adding 25kg to a Scoot booking after the fact costs about GBP 110 round-trip, which closes the gap with the mainline fares quickly.

Seat selection: free at check-in 24 hours before departure on all five mainline carriers I listed. Paid extra-legroom seats run GBP 60 to GBP 140 per leg and on a 13 hour LHR-SIN segment I think they're worth it once. Standard seats on the A350 and 777-300ER configurations these airlines fly are 17.5 inches wide which is fine. Avoid 787-9 economy on the Auckland routes if you're tall, the 17.0 inch width and 31 inch pitch is genuinely tight for 11 hours.

Meals: included on all mainline. Special meals (vegetarian, Hindu meal, Asian vegetarian, Jain) need to be booked at least 24 hours before, and I always recommend booking them because the special trays come out before the regular service and you get to start eating sooner.

Frequently asked questions

Do UK passport holders need a visa to enter New Zealand?
No traditional visa, but you do need the NZeTA at NZD 23 via app or NZD 17 via website, plus the IVL of NZD 100. That's approximately GBP 58 combined. Apply at least 72 hours before departure through the New Zealand immigration website.

Do Indian passport holders need a transit visa for Singapore on the SIN routing?
If your layover is under 96 hours and you've a confirmed onward ticket plus a valid New Zealand NZeTA, you qualify for the Visa Free Transit Facility and don't need a Singapore visa. If you want to leave the airport for the free city tour, the same VFTF applies. Carry printed copies of your NZeTA approval and onward boarding pass.

Do Indian passport holders need a transit visa for Dubai?
For airside-only transit, no. If you want to leave DXB during a layover, apply for a 48-hour or 96-hour Emirates transit visa via the Emirates website at USD 30 to USD 60. Approval takes 24 to 48 hours.

Do Indian passport holders need a transit visa for Hong Kong?
You need a free Pre-arrival Registration (PAR), online, takes two to three working days. With PAR you can transit and leave the airport for up to seven days.

Can I route through the US without a US visa as an Indian passport holder?
No. US transit always requires either a B1/B2 visa or a C-1 transit visa. If you don't have one, route through Singapore, Dubai, Doha, or Hong Kong instead.

What is the cheapest single-ticket round-trip I should expect to find?
GBP 1,100 to GBP 1,250 on Emirates or Singapore Airlines in April-May or September-October shoulder, booked 60 to 90 days out. GBP 950 is achievable on Scoot two-stop but with baggage and meal extras the realistic landed cost is closer to GBP 1,100.

How bad is the jet lag in real terms?
Plan for three days of significant adjustment westbound and two days returning eastbound. Pick flights landing in Auckland in late afternoon, force daylight exposure, defer alcohol and afternoon caffeine for two days. Most travellers feel functional but tired by day two and normal by day four.

What baggage allowance comes standard?
Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qatar, Cathay Pacific, and Air New Zealand all include 30kg checked plus 7kg cabin in their Auckland economy fares. Scoot and other low-cost options often include zero checked baggage and add-ons run GBP 110 to GBP 160 round-trip for 25 to 30kg.

Safety and the local context

Auckland is one of the safer big cities I've walked at night, but New Zealand isn't without its hazards once you move beyond it. South Island terrain, rivers, and weather kill more travellers than Auckland traffic ever will. I went through the specifics in most dangerous places in New Zealand and why so I would not repeat the list here, but if your itinerary extends to Fiordland, Tongariro, or the West Coast glaciers please read it before you book the campervan.

For external sources I trust on the practical side: the airport itself has a good page at Auckland Airport on Wikipedia, country-level practical orientation at Wikivoyage New Zealand, the official tourism site at newzealand.com, and live fare comparison at Skyscanner.

My one-line recommendation if you ask me at a coffee

Singapore Airlines LHR-SIN-AKL with a seven-hour layover at Changi, booked 60 days ahead in April-May or September-October, GBP 1,200 to GBP 1,350 round-trip, 28 hours total elapsed, 30kg baggage, free city tour or rooftop pool during the layover, lands AKL with afternoon daylight on the right schedule. If the price gap to Emirates via DXB is more than GBP 100 cheaper, take Emirates and accept the longer second leg. If you've no US visa avoid LAX. If Cathay HKG is within GBP 50 of the Singapore fare and the schedule lands in daylight, take Cathay because it's genuinely the shortest at 27 hours.

That's the answer I would've liked the first time I tried to book this route in 2019 and spent a confused weekend on Skyscanner. So the route is long, the fare ranges are wide, and the cheapest option is almost never the shortest. Pick the layover hub first, the carrier second, and the price third, and the trip works out fine.
