TL;DR
Sichuan packs the planet's largest captive panda population, five UNESCO sites, and the spice-numb cuisine that shaped modern Chinese cooking inside one 486,000 km² province. I spent eighteen days circling Chengdu, the Tibetan plateau valleys, and the Min River temple towns. This guide covers visas (240-hour transit through Chengdu plus the standard 90-day tourist), Alipay setup, altitude prep for 3,300 m Jiuzhaigou, and how to book pandas before 07:30.
Why Visit Sichuan in 2026
Three reasons pushed Sichuan to the front of my 2026 plans.
The visa picture favours independent travellers. China reopened standard tourist visas at USD 140 for 90 days from most passports, and Chengdu sits on the approved list for the 240-hour visa-free transit policy: 54 eligible passports can enter for ten days with an onward third-country ticket. I used the transit route on my first visit and the L visa on my second.
Chengdu is the panda capital of the planet. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding opened in 1987 with six rescued bears; its 200-hectare campus now hosts over 120 individuals. The province also runs Wolong National Nature Reserve in the Qionglai mountains, with roughly 100 wild pandas in a 2006 UNESCO biosphere.
Five UNESCO sites sit inside one province: Jiuzhaigou Valley (1992), Huanglong (1992), Mt Emei with the Leshan Giant Buddha (1996), Mt Qingcheng with Dujiangyan (2000), and the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries covering Wolong (2006). Add Tang carvings and the Three Kingdoms temples and you have eight to twelve days of dense sightseeing.
Background and Context
Sichuan ("four rivers") covers 486,000 km², the fifth largest province, with 84 million people, the fifth most populous. The land splits into the low Sichuan Basin (200 to 700 m, rice and rapeseed) and the Tibetan plateau west (Aba and Ganzi prefectures, 3,000 to 6,000 m).
Chengdu, the capital, was founded around 311 BCE under the Qin and kept its name 2,300 years. The metro covers 1,656 km² with 21 million residents. Mandarin is official; Sichuanese runs on market stalls. Currency yuan (CNY); time zone UTC+8.
Eight recognised ethnic groups appear: Han (95 percent), Tibetan, Yi, Qiang, Hui, Miao, Naxi, Lisu. Qiang concentrate around Maoxian and Wenchuan; Tibetans dominate Aba and Ganzi including Jiuzhaigou and Daocheng; Yi live in Liangshan to the south.
Chengdu and the Giant Panda Research Base
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding sits twelve km north of the centre. Opens 07:30; arrive by 07:15 for active feeding pandas before the buses. Tickets 55 CNY (USD 7.60), book three to seven days ahead through the official WeChat mini-program (foreigners can register a passport), daily cap 60,000.
The 200-hectare campus splits into the Sunshine Nursery, Moonlight Nursery, Sub-adult Yard, Adult Yard, and a red panda area. I counted nineteen giant pandas across my morning loop plus eight red pandas. The Giant Panda Museum covers Ailuropoda melanoleuca taxonomy and the 2016 IUCN reclassification from Endangered to Vulnerable.
Beyond pandas: Wuhou Temple (50 CNY) honours Zhuge Liang and the Shu Han state (221 to 263 CE), adjoining Jinli Old Street for snacks. Kuanzhai Alley preserves three Qing hutongs. People's Park holds Heming Teahouse (15 CNY for an afternoon of jasmine refills). Wenshu Monastery, a 7th-century Tang Buddhist complex, is free and runs a good vegetarian lunch.
Sichuan food is one of the Eight Great Traditions, built on mala (la chilli plus ma numbing peppercorn from Zanthoxylum bungeanum). I ate hotpot at Shu Jiu Xiang, mapo tofu at the 1862 Chen Mapo Doufu shop, dandan noodles from a 12 CNY cart near Chunxi Road, and twice-cooked pork at a family place.
Jiuzhaigou Valley UNESCO 1992
Jiuzhaigou sits 450 km north of Chengdu in Aba Tibetan and Qiang Prefecture. The 720 km² reserve became UNESCO in 1992 and Man and Biosphere in 1997. The Y-shape splits into three forks (Shuzheng, Rize, Zechawa) meeting at Nuorilang, with elevations 2,000 to 4,500 m.
The colours are the draw. 108 alpine lakes (haizi), coloured by calcium carbonate, algae, and reflected forest, show turquoise, cobalt, jade, and banded greens. Nuorilang Falls runs 270 m wide and 24 m tall, among the widest travertine waterfalls on Earth. Pearl Shoal Falls drops 28 m across a calcium shelf upstream.
The 2017 magnitude 7.0 earthquake damaged Sparkling Lake; the park fully reopened in 2023 with daily caps (41,000 peak, 20,000 off-season) and reservation-only entry. The 169 CNY ticket plus 90 CNY shuttle covers internal transport.
Nine Tibetan stockaded villages sit inside the boundary. Shuzheng village hosts a small museum showing yak-butter tea and prayer wheels. Best season: late September through mid-November for autumn colour against blue water; I went mid-October and counted seven species of foliage from one viewpoint.
Leshan Giant Buddha UNESCO 1996
Leshan sits 130 km south of Chengdu at the confluence of the Min, Dadu, and Qingyi rivers. The Giant Buddha, carved into the Lingyun red sandstone cliff between 713 and 803 CE under the Tang, depicts Maitreya seated with hands on knees. At 71 m, it is the tallest pre-modern stone Buddha on Earth: ears 7 m, shoulders 28 m.
The monk Haitong commissioned it to calm dangerous river currents and gouged out his own eyes when officials tried to take the funds. The drainage system carved behind the head, ears, and chest still functions, an engineering choice in the UNESCO citation.
The cliff staircase descends 250 m to the right of the head. Arrive at 07:30 opening to avoid the ninety-minute peak queue. The 80 CNY ticket includes Lingyun Temple. A 70 CNY boat ride reveals the "Sleeping Buddha" silhouette of Mt Wuyou, Lingyun, and Guishan ridges, with the Giant Buddha carved into the chest of the figure. Sunset light wins. Leshan pairs with Mt Emei under the same 1996 inscription. HSR from Chengdu East runs hourly, 65 CNY second class, 56 minutes.
Mt Emei UNESCO 1996
Mt Emei rises to 3,099 m in southern Sichuan, one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China. The 154 km² scenic zone holds 31 active monasteries. Buddhism arrived on Emei in the 1st century CE; Puxian (Samantabhadra) became the mountain's patron.
Wannian Temple, founded 1153 under the Song, holds the bronze Samantabhadra cast in 980 CE: 7.85 m tall on a six-tusked white elephant, 62 tonnes of solid bronze. The Beamless Brick Hall protecting it is the only large structure of its era still standing.
The Golden Summit, reached by bus to Leidongping plus a six-minute cable car (120 CNY round trip), holds the 48 m gilded bronze Puxian completed in 2006 with ten faces on four elephants. The platform offers sunrise, sea of clouds, and the occasional Buddha's Halo when mist cooperates.
Tibetan macaques concentrate near Qingyin Pavilion and the Ecological Monkey Reserve. They target plastic bags and food; I lost a granola bar in thirty seconds. The 185 CNY mountain ticket runs 48 hours, suiting a two-day plan with a monastery guesthouse overnight (200 to 350 CNY per bed).
Dujiangyan Irrigation System UNESCO 2000
Dujiangyan sits 55 km northwest of Chengdu and is one of the oldest functioning hydraulic works on Earth. Commissioned in 256 BCE by Li Bing and his son Li Erlang under the Qin, it still controls the Min River and irrigates over 5,500 km² across more than forty cities, 2,282 years later.
Three components do the work without dams. The Fish Mouth Levee (Yuzui) splits the river into the Inner (irrigation) and Outer (flood) channels, with the curve passively shifting flow ratio by season. The Flying Sand Weir (Feishayan), a low spillway, lets excess water spill back during floods and sweeps sediment with it by centrifugal force. The Bottle Neck Channel (Baopingkou), a 20 m gap cut through Mt Yulei by fire-and-water rock cracking over eight years to 251 BCE, controls maximum irrigation flow.
The Anlan Cable Bridge spans 200 m over the channels, dating before the 5th century in original bamboo form. Erwang Temple honours Li Bing and Li Erlang with the maxim "Dig the channel deep, build the spillway low" (深淘滩, 低作堰). The 80 CNY ticket plus 15 CNY cart covers the 4 km loop in three to four hours.
Huanglong UNESCO 1992
Huanglong sits 130 km north of Jiuzhaigou at 1,700 to 5,588 m, with the visitor circuit at 3,100 to 3,569 m. The 700 km² reserve got UNESCO status in 1992 for the largest open-air calcium carbonate terrace system on Earth.
A 3.6 km travertine ridge runs down the valley like a yellow dragon's spine, accumulated over 600,000 years from calcium-saturated groundwater. The system holds 3,400 pools. The Multicoloured Pond (Wucai Chi) covers 21,000 m² and 693 pools in turquoise, jade, gold, and lavender.
The hike runs 8 km with 400 m vertical gain at altitude. A 280 CNY cable car bypasses most of the climb. The 170 CNY entry runs March to mid-November. Oxygen canisters sell at 15 CNY and on-site oxygen shelters appear every kilometre.
Mt Qingcheng UNESCO 2000
Mt Qingcheng, ten km south of Dujiangyan, rises to 1,260 m and is a birthplace of Taoism. Zhang Daoling founded the Way of the Celestial Masters here in 142 CE. Front Mountain holds Jianfu Palace (730 CE), Tianshi Cave (where Zhang Daoling preached), and Shangqing Palace. Three to four hours round trip with a 60 CNY cable car option; entry 80 CNY. Back Mountain is a six to eight hour day hike through waterfalls and Cuiyinghu lake.
Wolong National Nature Reserve
Wolong protects 200,000 hectares in the Qionglai mountains, 130 km west of Chengdu, with over 100 wild giant pandas plus snow leopards, takins, and golden monkeys. The Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries UNESCO inscription (2006) covers Wolong with six other reserves and nine scenic parks across 924,500 hectares.
The Hetaoping Wolong Conservation Centre, rebuilt after the 2008 earthquake, runs the leading captive breeding program. The "panda keeper for a day" volunteer programme runs 700 CNY including enclosure cleaning, bamboo prep, and supervised feeding. The drive from Chengdu via the rebuilt Wenchuan expressway takes three hours.
Daocheng Yading
Daocheng Yading sits in Garze Tibetan Prefecture, eleven hours by car or one hour by air (Daocheng Yading Airport DCY, the world's highest civil airport at 4,411 m). The 1,344 km² reserve holds the Three Sacred Mountains of regional Tibetan Buddhism: Mt Xiannairi (6,032 m, Avalokitesvara), Mt Chanadorje (5,958 m, Vajrapani), and Mt Yangmaiyong (5,958 m, Manjushri).
Joseph Rock photographed the area in the 1920s and his images may have inspired the Shangri-La of Hilton's 1933 Lost Horizon. The Milk Lake (4,650 m) and Five Colour Lake (4,700 m) day hike starts at Luorong Pasture (4,180 m); I spent two nights in Daocheng town (3,750 m) acclimatising first. Ticket 270 CNY plus 80 CNY shuttle plus 80 CNY cart.
Larung Gar Sertar Buddhist Academy
Larung Gar, in Sertar County of Garze Prefecture at 4,000 m, is one of the largest Buddhist institutes in the world. Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok founded it in 1980 with thirty students; the population grew to an estimated 40,000 monks and nuns in tens of thousands of red wooden cabins down both valley walls.
Access takes commitment: 18 to 20 hours from Chengdu by road. Foreign access varies by year; confirm current rules with a registered local agency before booking. Viewing platforms above the valley have remained open while interior access has been restricted.

Planning the Trip
The weather window splits the year. March to early June is dry and mild in Chengdu (15 to 25 C) with clear western valleys. September to mid-November is the second prime window; mid-October is peak autumn colour in Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong. July to August brings plum-rain monsoon, daily mountain storms, and landslide closures. Winter (December to February) keeps Chengdu cool and closes Huanglong entirely.
Visas have two paths. The standard L visa runs USD 140 (USD 185 for US passports) for 30 to 90 days, applied through the China Visa Application Service Centre. The 240-hour transit policy, expanded in December 2024, lets 54 eligible passports enter at Chengdu Tianfu or Shuangliu, stay ten days, and travel inside Sichuan plus neighbouring zones with an onward third-country ticket. India is not on the eligible list, so Indian passports need the L visa.
Flights from India: occasional direct on Sichuan Airlines or Air India, or via Hong Kong (Cathay), Bangkok (Thai), Kuala Lumpur, or Kunming (China Eastern). Total 10 to 16 hours; round-trip economy INR 38,000 to 75,000 (USD 455 to 900) in shoulder seasons.
Internal transport: HSR east and south, flights or long-distance buses for north and west. Chengdu East and South stations cover HSR including Leshan-Emeishan and Chongqing. Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU) airports run flights to Jiuzhaigou (JZH), Daocheng Yading (DCY), and Kangding (KGT). Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou is a one-hour flight or eight-to-ten-hour bus.
Payment is mostly mobile. Alipay and WeChat Pay both opened to foreign cards in 2023 and accept Visa, Mastercard, and Amex with passport verification. Download both before flying, link a card, and test before relying on them. Cash works at major hotels and gates but vanishes at street stalls. Major bank ATMs accept foreign cards (20 CNY fee).
Chengdu is humid subtropical: summer 32 C, winter 4 to 8 C. Jiuzhaigou runs ten degrees colder. Huanglong and Daocheng need down layers even in July. Temples require covered shoulders and knees; slip-on shoes help at Mt Emei monasteries.
FAQs
Q1. Visa or 240-hour transit through Chengdu?
Indian passports need the L visa (USD 140, 30 to 90 days, applied via the China Visa Application Service Centre). The 240-hour transit policy applies to 54 eligible passports (EU, UK, Australia, NZ, Japan, Korea, Russia, Brazil, others) and requires an onward third-country ticket and travel inside the approved zone.
Q2. How do I pay when foreign cards rarely swipe?
Install both Alipay and WeChat Pay before flying. Both accept Visa, Mastercard, and Amex after passport verification. Test with a 1 CNY top-up before relying on them. Cash works at hotels, major restaurants, and tourist gates but disappears at street stalls and taxis. Carry 1,000 to 2,000 CNY as backup; ATMs at Bank of China, ICBC, and China Construction Bank accept foreign cards.
Q3. How far in advance to book the Panda Base, and when to arrive?
Three to seven days ahead via the official WeChat mini-program. Daily cap 60,000; peak-season weekends (April, May, October) sell out by mid-week. Arrive at the south gate by 07:15 for 07:30 opening; by 10:00 the bears retreat to shade. Allow three to four hours.
Q4. How serious is altitude sickness at Jiuzhaigou and beyond?
Real but manageable at Jiuzhaigou (gate 2,000 m, viewpoints 3,100 m). Mild symptoms hit 30 to 50 percent of arrivals. Huanglong (3,100 to 3,569 m) and Daocheng Yading (Luorong 4,180 m, lakes 4,700 m) are harder. Acetazolamide 125 mg twice daily, started one day before 2,500 m, helps (consult a doctor first). Oxygen canisters sell at park shops (15 to 30 CNY).
Q5. Vegetarian options in Sichuan and at Buddhist temples?
Workable. Mapo tofu (temple-style without pork), dry-fried green beans, spicy diced potato, fish-fragrant eggplant, and the cold appetisers are reliably plant-based. Hotpot offers a mushroom broth alongside the chilli broth. Wenshu in Chengdu, Wannian on Mt Emei, and Manjushri Hall at Qingcheng run vegetarian set menus from 30 to 80 CNY without meat, onion, or garlic.
Q6. What does mala taste like and how do I order non-spicy?
Mala combines la (Capsicum heat) and ma (Sichuan peppercorn numbing-tingle from hydroxyl-alpha-sanshool, which activates the same nerve receptors as touch). The result buzzes on the lips and softens the chilli burn. For low spice ask for wei la (very mild) or bu la (none). Most hotpot restaurants offer a yuanyang ("mandarin duck") split pot.
Q7. Are Western apps blocked, do I need a VPN?
Yes. The Great Firewall blocks Google, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter/X, and most Western news sites. Apple iCloud, FaceTime, iMessage, and Bing mostly work. Install a paid VPN (ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Astrill) before leaving home; downloading inside China is difficult. Mobile data on a roaming foreign SIM bypasses the firewall entirely.
Q8. How to approach the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake heritage?
The Wenchuan earthquake of 12 May 2008, magnitude 7.9, killed 87,000 people, injured 374,000, and left 4.8 million homeless; the epicentre lay 80 km northwest of Chengdu. Beichuan Old Town, preserved as a memorial, displays the destroyed centre as it was. Visit quietly and skip selfies. Rebuilt Qiang villages host respectful cultural programmes. Aftershocks ceased years ago and infrastructure is fully restored with seismic reinforcement.

Cultural Notes
Sichuan runs 95 percent Han with significant Tibetan, Yi, Qiang, Hui, Miao, Naxi, and Lisu minorities in western and southern prefectures. The Qiang, one of the oldest continuously identified peoples in China, lost heavily in the 2008 earthquake; several Qiang villages were rebuilt with UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage support.
Religious life runs three streams. Mahayana Buddhism dominates eastern temples (Wenshu, Wannian). Tibetan Vajrayana follows the four schools across Aba and Garze. Taoism has its institutional birthplace at Mt Qingcheng, founded 142 CE by Zhang Daoling. Confucianism, ancestor veneration, and folk practice run alongside.
Sichuan cuisine is one of the Eight Great Traditions, built on mala, Pixian douban (fermented broad-bean and chilli paste from Pixian county), and techniques of dry-frying, twice-cooking, and small-pot stir-frying. Signature dishes: hotpot, dandan noodles, mapo tofu, kung pao chicken, twice-cooked pork, fish-fragrant eggplant.
Sichuan opera (Chuanju) is the regional theatre form. Its signature is bian lian (face-changing), in which performers switch painted silk masks in a fraction of a second through sleight-of-hand passed down inside families. The technique is protected as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Shows run nightly at Shufeng Yayun Teahouse (150 to 320 CNY).
The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is endemic to Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu. The 2021 census estimated 1,864 wild individuals across six mountain ranges, with Min and Qionglai (both in Sichuan) holding the most. IUCN reclassified the species from Endangered to Vulnerable in 2016.
The Three Kingdoms (220 to 280 CE) live on across Sichuan because the Shu Han state (221 to 263 CE) was based here under Liu Bei. Zhuge Liang's campaigns and reforms became foundational moral stories. Wuhou Temple honours him and Liu Bei together, the only such joint shrine in the country.
