Ghana Complete Guide 2026: Accra, Cape Coast Castle, Mole NP, Kumasi & the Volta Region
TL;DR
I went to Ghana for the history first. Accra surprised me with Black Star Gate, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and a working fishing harbour at Jamestown. Cape Coast Castle (UNESCO 1979) and Elmina Castle (built 1482, the oldest European structure south of the Sahara) want two slow days. Kakum's 350 m canopy walkway 30 m up, Mole's 4,840 km² of elephants, Kumasi's Manhyia Palace plus Kejetia Market with 11,000 stalls, Larabanga's 13th-century mud mosque, Wli's 80 m falls and Lake Volta's 8,502 km² tie it together. Budget USD 60 a day backpacker, USD 130 mid-range, USD 280 comfortable. Dry season November to March. eVisa USD 35 for 60 days.
Why Ghana in 2026
Ghana's tourism story since 2019 has been remarkable. The Year of Return that August marked 400 years since the first 20 enslaved Africans reached Jamestown, Virginia in August 1619. Ghana invited the diaspora home, over 600,000 visitors came, and receipts hit an estimated USD 1.9 billion. The campaign rolled into Beyond the Return from 2020, a ten-year framework for African-diaspora travel, investment and citizenship pathways. That arc still carries the energy in Accra and Cape Coast.
The eVisa launched widely from 2023 (including for Indian passport holders) at USD 35 for a single 60-day entry, processed in 5 to 7 working days. Visa-on-arrival at Kotoka runs USD 150 and is for exceptional cases only. Ghana has had eight peaceful elections under the Fourth Republic since 1992. The economy rides on gold, oil and cocoa (world's second-largest cocoa producer), and cedi volatility through 2022 to 2025 means USD prices keep dropping for visitors.
Ghana is also compact for what it holds. From Accra: Cape Coast Castle in three hours, Kumasi in five, Mole NP in a long day, Wli Falls in another. Few African countries pack this much heritage, savanna, rainforest and coast inside one circuit.
Background
Long before Europeans reached the Gulf of Guinea, the forested middle belt and the savanna north of it carried serious states. The Bono and Denkyira kingdoms ran the gold trade. Around 1680 Osei Tutu founded the Ashanti (Asante) Empire at Kumasi, and in 1701 the priest Komfo Anokye is said to have caused the Golden Stool, the Sika Dwa Kofi, to descend from the sky as the soul of the Asante nation. The empire grew until British forces ended Asante sovereignty by 1900, but the Asantehene and the Golden Stool survived as the spiritual centre of the Akan world, and still do.
Portuguese caravels reached the Gold Coast in 1471. In 1482 they finished São Jorge da Mina at Elmina, the oldest European-built building south of the Sahara still standing. The Dutch took Elmina in 1637 and held it until 1872. The British built Cape Coast Castle from 1664. The Danes ran Christiansborg (Osu Castle) from 1661. Across roughly three centuries, an estimated 10 to 12 million Africans were trafficked across the Atlantic, and a heavy share were forced through the doors at these castles. The "Door of No Return" is not a metaphor. It is a low wooden gate that opened directly onto the surf where ships waited. I will not romanticise any of this: at both castles I walked quietly, listened to the guides, and did not photograph the dungeons.
The British formalised the Gold Coast colony in 1874. Kwame Nkrumah led the country to independence on 6 March 1957, the first sub-Saharan African colony to break free, and Ghana became a Republic on 1 July 1960. After military coups between 1966 and 1983, multiparty democracy resumed in 1992. Eight clean elections later, Ghana is one of the steadiest democracies on the continent.
Tier-1 Anchors
1) Accra, the Capital
I gave Accra three days and could have used four. Independence Square (Black Star Square) sits on the Atlantic edge of the old colonial core. Built in 1961 for Queen Elizabeth's visit, it covers roughly 33,000 m², anchored by Black Star Gate, the Independence Arch and the Eternal Flame of African Liberation lit by Nkrumah. It is most alive on 6 March, Independence Day.
A short walk inland is Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, opened in 1992 on the 21-hectare site where Nkrumah declared independence. The mausoleum is sober and the museum runs through his Pan-African philosophy. Entry GHS 60, camera fee GHS 30.
Jamestown is the oldest district, a working fishing harbour where wooden pirogues come in at dawn. The Jamestown Lighthouse (1871, rebuilt 1930) costs GHS 30 to climb. Brazil House is a small museum on the Tabon people, Afro-Brazilian returnees from Bahia in 1836 who built this quarter. The Ramseyer Presbyterian Church (1888) anchors the central street. Osu Castle (Christiansborg), Danish-built from 1661 and a slave-trading post before becoming the seat of government, sits east of Jamestown and requires advance permission.
For shopping I used Makola Market and the Arts Centre at Osu for Kente, beads and adinkra prints. Labadi Beach (La Pleasure Beach) is GHS 30 to enter; weekends bring live highlife bands. The W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Centre, where the Pan-Africanist lived from 1961 and is buried, is a quiet stop near the airport. Accra Sports Stadium (40,000 capacity) hosts Black Stars matches.
2) Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle
These two are why most diaspora travellers come, and they are the heart of the UNESCO Forts and Castles listing inscribed in 1979 (26 sites along roughly 500 km of coast).
Cape Coast Castle was first a Swedish lodge (1653), then Danish, then Dutch, and from 1664 British. It became the headquarters of the Royal African Company. The male dungeons held up to 1,000 men at a time in cells where I could not stand upright; the female dungeons are smaller and the guide explained their history with the dignity it deserves. The "Door of No Return" opens onto the beach where slave ships took on their human cargo. Entry GHS 80 (foreign visitor), plus GHS 150 for a still camera and GHS 35 for a phone permit. The upstairs museum traces the entire transatlantic trade. President Obama and family visited in 2009. Maya Angelou came multiple times. Both castles are pilgrimage sites for African-American and Afro-Caribbean visitors, and the tone is set accordingly.
Elmina St George's Castle sits 12 km west. Built by the Portuguese in 1482, taken by the Dutch in 1637 and run until 1872, it is the oldest extant European building south of the Sahara. I walked the courtyard, the Portuguese chapel turned Dutch auction hall, the governor's quarters, the women's punishment cell, and the Door of No Return. Entry GHS 80. The fishing port outside, beneath Fort St Jago, is one of the most photographed working harbours in West Africa; I asked before photographing people.
Sleep in Cape Coast town. I stayed two nights to give each castle a full morning and a free afternoon to walk the Pra estuary and recover.
3) Kakum National Park and the Coast
Kakum is 33 km north of Cape Coast, an easy half-day if you start early. The park covers 360 km² of primary rainforest, gazetted in 1992. The Canopy Walkway, opened in 1995, is the only one of its kind in Africa: seven hanging bridges totalling about 350 m at up to 30 m above the forest floor. Entry plus canopy walk is around GHS 80 for foreign adults. The 06:30 sunrise tour costs extra but rewards with mist, birdsong and a real chance at hornbills and Diana monkeys.
The park holds forest elephants (rarely seen), bushbabies, bongo and over 250 bird species. A two-hour ground trail is included. The nearby Domama Rock Shrine, sacred to the Akan, can be added with a guide.
4) Mole National Park and Larabanga
Mole is Ghana's largest and oldest protected area, gazetted in 1958, covering 4,840 km² of Guinea savanna. The elephant population sits around 700, along with 92 mammal species including kob, hartebeest, warthog and baboon. What makes Mole special is the walking safari: you follow an armed ranger across the savanna at GHS 100 to 150 per person for two hours. The Mole Motel sits on an escarpment overlooking two waterholes; from the pool deck I watched elephants drink at 16:30 without moving.
Park entry GHS 100 (foreign adult) plus GHS 60 per vehicle. Tamale (TML) is the closest airport, 3.5 to 4 hours by road from the park gate at Larabanga.
Larabanga village holds the Larabanga Mosque, dated to the 13th century by oral tradition (carbon dating on the timbers points to around the 17th century, but the older date is the one used locally). Either way, it is one of the oldest Sudano-Sahelian mud-and-stick mosques in West Africa, with conical towers and a low whitewashed prayer hall. Non-Muslims cannot enter, but the caretaker explains the building, the Mystic Stone legend, and the Yendi Naa pilgrimage links. Donation GHS 20 to 30.
5) Kumasi and the Ashanti Kingdom
Kumasi was founded as the Asante capital around 1680 and remains the spiritual centre of the Akan world. Manhyia Palace, built in 1925 to replace the older palace burned by the British in 1874, is the residence of the Asantehene. The current king, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reigned since 1999; when his procession passes, traffic stops and people kneel. The Manhyia Palace Museum (GHS 60) covers the regalia, the genealogy back to Osei Tutu I, and the colonial wars. Time your visit for an Adae festival (every 42 days in the Akan calendar, six Akwasidae cycles per year) if you can.
In Bonwire village, 18 km northeast, master weavers hand-loom Kente cloth. I watched a single 4-inch strip take shape and bought a stole with known provenance. A real silk Kente runs USD 200 plus; cotton stoles start around USD 30.
The Komfo Anokye Sword Site, inside the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital grounds, marks where the priest is said to have planted the sword in 1701 that no man can pull out. The Cultural Centre (opened 1985) covers Akan crafts in one place. Kejetia Market, West Africa's largest with around 11,000 stalls across 12 hectares, was renovated in 2021 and is now divided into manageable sections. A morning and a local guide (GHS 100) is plenty.
Tier-2 Stops
6) Volta Region and Wli Falls
The Volta Region tucks against the Togo border in the southeast. Wli Falls (Agumatsa) drops about 80 m at the lower fall and is generally rated the highest waterfall in West Africa, with an upper fall of roughly 30 m above. Entry GHS 50 with a mandatory village guide. The 45-minute walk in crosses nine log bridges. Hohoe is the base. I also climbed Mount Afadja (Afadjato), Ghana's highest point at 885 m, in about two hours up. Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, where habituated mona monkeys come out at dawn for bananas, is 30 minutes away.
7) Lake Volta and Akosombo Dam
Akosombo Dam, completed in 1965 on the Volta River, created Lake Volta at roughly 8,502 km², the world's largest reservoir by surface area. The dam supplies most of Ghana's electricity through the Volta River Authority. From Akosombo town I took the Dodi Princess weekend cruise (GHS 250 to 350) to Dodi Island. Longer ferries run from Akosombo to Yeji and on to Buipe near Tamale (around 24 hours), still a working route for fishing communities.
8) Cape Three Points, Busua and Beyin
The western coast feels different. Cape Three Points is the southernmost tip of Ghana, with a small lighthouse and a basic eco-lodge. Busua is a surf town with mellow beach breaks and a small expat scene. Beyin, further west, is the gateway to Nzulezo, a 600-year-old stilt village built entirely over Lake Tadane and on UNESCO's tentative list since 2000. The trip is a 45-minute pirogue paddle through papyrus channels; entry was GHS 60 plus the boat fee.
9) Aburi Botanical Gardens and the Akuapem Hills
Aburi sits 30 km north of Accra at about 460 m, which means cool air and easy hiking. The Aburi Botanical Gardens were founded in 1890 by the British and hold the original cocoa tree planted from seedlings linked to Tetteh Quarshie, the Ghanaian smith who returned from Fernando Pó with cocoa pods in 1879 and seeded the industry that now makes Ghana the world's second-largest cocoa producer. Entry was GHS 30. Combine it with a stop at the Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm at Mampong-Akuapem for the full story.
10) Nzulezo (combined with Beyin above)
I have grouped Nzulezo with Beyin since the access logistics are identical and most travellers do them together. The village is reached only by canoe, the houses sit on stilts driven into the lakebed, and the community has lived here for around six centuries. Respect the no-photo signs around the chief's house and the shrine.

Planning
Visa. Ghana eVisa from 2023 (including Indian passports) at USD 35 for a single 60-day entry, processed in 5 to 7 working days through gis.gov.gh. Multi-entry USD 60. Visa-on-arrival at Kotoka costs USD 150 and is only granted in exceptional cases. Yellow fever certificate is checked at immigration. Malaria prophylaxis advised. Onward ticket proof sometimes requested.
When to go. Dry season November to March. December to February brings the harmattan, Saharan dust that softens the heat. April to October is rainy, heaviest June and July. For Year of Return anniversary energy and the Emancipation Day Jamestown street festival on 1 August, go late July to early August. For Mole wildlife, December to April is best.
Getting in. Kotoka International (ACC) in Accra is the hub, served from Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Lagos, London, New York and Washington. Kumasi (KMS) and Tamale (TML) handle domestic flights on Africa World Airlines and PassionAir.
Getting around. STC and VIP run intercity coaches on Accra-Kumasi, Accra-Cape Coast and Accra-Tamale at fixed prices. Metro Mass Transit is the cheaper state operator. Tro tros cover short and medium hops. Bolt and Uber both work in Accra; Bolt is more reliable in Kumasi. I used a hired car with driver for the Mole leg.
Food. Jollof rice (Ghana's rivalry with Nigeria and Senegal over whose is best is a permanent conversation), waakye (rice and beans with shito and gari), banku and tilapia, fufu with light or groundnut soup, red red (beans and fried plantain), chinchinga kebabs. Star, Club and Gulder are local lagers. Palm wine is best fresh in the countryside.
Languages. English is official. Twi (Asante and Akuapem Akan) is the most useful second language nationally. Fante on the coast, Ga in Accra, Ewe in the Volta Region, Dagbani in the north.

Cultural Notes
Akan day names. Children are traditionally named by the day they were born. A boy born on Monday is Kwadwo, a girl Adwoa. Tuesday is Kwabena and Abenaa. Wednesday is Kwaku and Akua. Thursday is Yaw and Yaa. Friday is Kofi and Afua. Saturday is Kwame and Ama. Sunday is Kwasi and Akosua. Kofi Annan was born on Friday. Kwame Nkrumah on Saturday.
The Golden Stool. The Sika Dwa Kofi is not a throne to sit on; it is the soul of the Asante nation. Nobody, not even the Asantehene, sits on it. In 1900 the British Governor Frederick Hodgson demanded to sit on it, triggering the War of the Golden Stool led by Yaa Asantewaa, the Queen Mother of Ejisu. She lost the war but the stool was hidden and preserved.
Greetings. The Akan handshake ends with a snap of the middle finger against the other person's middle finger. Start the handshake from the right side of the group; reversing direction is considered rude. Always use the right hand to give, receive and eat. The left hand alone is impolite.
Dress. Beachwear at Labadi and the resort coast is fine. In Kumasi, the north and any rural village I covered shoulders and knees, and at Larabanga I dressed conservatively as a sign of respect. Funerals are major social events and visitors are often welcomed; wear black or red and white if invited.
The Cape Coast and Elmina visits. Speak quietly in the dungeons. Do not photograph inside the female dungeons or the condemned cell. Tipping the castle guides GHS 50 to 100 is appropriate. Many African-American visitors come with libations and brief private ceremonies at the Door of No Return; give them space.
The jollof debate. Ghanaian jollof uses long-grain rice and a tomato-pepper base cooked down low. Do not say Nigerian jollof is better unless you are looking for a long, friendly argument.
