Grenada Complete Guide 2026: Spice Island, St George's, Carriacou & Underwater Sculpture Park

I spent fourteen nights in Grenada in March 2026, splitting time between St George's, Grand Anse, Gouyave on the west coast, and a four-night side trip to Carriacou. I came back convinced this 344 square kilometre Commonwealth Area is one of the most under-discussed Caribbean stops, partly because Grenadians do not market hard, and partly because most travellers stop at Barbados or St Lucia and never bother with the southern stretch. The country produces around 20% of the world's nutmeg in good years, sits on a horseshoe harbour the colour of pool tile, and hosts the first underwater sculpture park ever built. This guide is my full notes from that trip, prices verified, with practical answers for Indian passport holders, retirees, and divers.

Why Visit Grenada in 2026

Grenada gives Indian passport holders a 90-day visa-free stamp on arrival, with the standard requirement of an onward ticket and proof of accommodation. I showed my return flight to Mumbai via London and the first three nights of my Airbnb booking, and the immigration officer at Maurice Bishop International stamped me through in under four minutes. There is no online form, no eVisa fee, no waiting period.

Grand Anse Beach runs three kilometres of white sand along the southwest coast and routinely lands on the World's Top 10 Caribbean Beaches lists. Spice Island Beach Resort and Sandals Grenada (opened December 2013) anchor the strip, but the public beach access points are wide open and free.

The Molinere Beauséjour Marine Protected Area, north of St George's, holds the Underwater Sculpture Park that Jason deCaires Taylor began installing in 2006. Seventy-five sculptures now sit between three and eight metres deep, most famously the Vicissitudes ring of 26 children figures and the Lost Correspondent reading his desk on the seabed. Coral has been attaching to the cast for two decades, turning the figures into living reef.

Then there is the spice angle. Grenada is the Nutmeg State, and its nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, clove, vanilla, cocoa, and allspice show up in every market, distillery, and chocolate bar across the island. The Gouyave Nutmeg Processing Plant (operating since 1948) reopened gradually after Hurricane Ivan flattened it in 2004, and I toured the working sorting floor for two US dollars.

Background: From Kalinago to Commonwealth Area

Christopher Columbus sighted Grenada on his third voyage in 1498 and named it Concepción, but Spain never settled. The Kalinago (Island Carib) population held the island until French colonists from Martinique arrived in 1650 and pushed inland. The conflict ended at Sauteurs in 1651, when around 40 Kalinago men leapt from a 40-metre cliff rather than surrender. Locals still call the cliff Carib's Leap, and Sauteurs (the French word for "leapers") kept the name.

France held Grenada from 1650 to 1763, building forts and starting sugar plantations. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 handed the island to Britain, with one brief French recapture from 1779 to 1783 before Britain took it back permanently. Slavery was abolished across the British Caribbean on 1 August 1834, a date Grenadians still observe as Emancipation Day.

Independence came on 7 February 1974 under Eric Gairy. Five years later, on 13 March 1979, the New Jewel Movement led by Maurice Bishop seized power in a bloodless coup. Bishop ran a left-wing government with Cuban and Soviet ties until 19 October 1983, when his deputy Bernard Coard arranged his arrest and execution at Fort George. Six days later, on 25 October 1983, US forces launched Operation Urgent Fury, the Cold War invasion that displaced the Coard faction and restored constitutional government. I will not take a political position on the events of October 1983, but the facts are taught in Grenadian schools and printed on memorial plaques at Fort George.

Today Grenada is a Commonwealth Area of roughly 110,000 people, with King Charles III as head of state and a Governor-General resident in St George's. The capital, Grand Anse, Gouyave, Sauteurs, and the sister islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique form the inhabited core of a seven-island archipelago.

Tier-1 Sights

St George's, the Capital

St George's sits on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as a colonial port town. The French founded it in 1763 as Fort Royal, and the British renamed it after their patron saint. The Carenage, the horseshoe harbour that wraps the town centre, is the postcard image everyone remembers. Fishing sloops, ferry boats, and the occasional super-yacht share dock space, and the painted warehouses along the inner curve sell spice baskets, cocoa balls, and saltfish patties.

Fort George, built by the French in 1705 on the headland above the harbour, costs 5 US dollars to enter. The view from the ramparts covers the whole Carenage and the open Caribbean to the west. The memorial plaque marking the spot where Maurice Bishop and seven colleagues were shot on 19 October 1983 is set into the courtyard wall.

Fort Frederick, completed by the British in 1779 on Richmond Hill, offers the better photo angle because it looks back at Fort George with the harbour behind. Entry is free, and a taxi from the Carenage runs about 6 US dollars one way.

The Sendall Tunnel, opened in 1894 and cut 100 metres through the volcanic ridge that separates the Carenage from the Esplanade, is the oldest road tunnel in the Caribbean. It is single-lane, signal-controlled, and pedestrians walk through alongside the cars.

St George's Anglican Cathedral, consecrated in 1818, sat roofless for fifteen years after Hurricane Ivan tore through on 7 September 2004. Restoration finished in 2018. Two other churches, the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the Presbyterian Kirk, complete the three-spire skyline that defines the town.

The Grenada National Museum, founded in 1976 in a former French barracks and prison from 1704, holds the islands' archaeology, slavery, and independence collections. Entry is 5 EC dollars (about 2 US dollars). Hurricane Ivan damaged roughly 85% of the buildings in St George's in 2004, and the rebuilt town centre still shows patches of corrugated roofing on older houses.

Grand Anse Beach

Grand Anse runs three kilometres south of St George's, with calm Caribbean Sea water and a gentle shelf that lets you walk out 30 metres before the sand drops away. Spice Island Beach Resort, locally owned by the Hopkin family, sits at the south end and charges 350 to 900 US dollars a night depending on season.

Sandals Grenada opened in December 2013 as the chain's eighth Caribbean property (the original Sandals opened in Jamaica in 1981). All-inclusive rates run 600 to 1,500 US dollars per couple per night. Public access points to Grand Anse are unmarked but obvious: look for the gaps between hotel fences along the parallel road, and walk straight through.

Underwater Sculpture Park

I booked a snorkel tour through Native Spirit Scuba for 95 US dollars. The boat leaves Grand Anse at 9 am, runs 25 minutes north past the airport to the Molinere Beauséjour Marine Protected Area, and drops anchor over Vicissitudes. The water sat at 27 degrees in March, visibility around 15 metres.

Jason deCaires Taylor installed the first sculptures in 2006, and the park grew to 75 figures by 2024. Vicissitudes (26 children holding hands in a circle, three metres down) is the renowned image; Lost Correspondent (a man at a desk reading a 1980s newspaper) is the diver favourite. Coral has attached to almost every piece, and parrotfish, sergeant majors, and the occasional reef shark cruise through.

Tours run 80 to 120 US dollars for snorkel, 90 to 130 US dollars for a single-tank dive at up to 40 metres on the deeper outer site. Reef-safe sunscreen has been mandatory across the marine protected area since 2020.

Waterfalls

Concord Falls, on the leeward side near Gouyave, drops in three tiers totalling 65 metres. The first tier sits 200 metres from the road and costs 5 US dollars. The second and third require a 45-minute guided hike (10 US dollars extra) through cocoa and nutmeg plantations.

Annandale Falls, 30 minutes inland from St George's, is a single 9-metre drop with a swimming pool at the base. Local guys jump from the top for tips (around 5 US dollars). Entry is 4 US dollars.

Royal Mt Carmel Falls, the tallest cascade on the island at 21 metres, sits in the eastern parish of St Andrew. Entry is 5 US dollars and a 15-minute walk down a forested path gets you to the base.

Spice Tour: Gouyave and Belmont Estate

Gouyave Nutmeg Processing Plant has run since 1948. Hurricane Ivan destroyed roughly 90% of Grenada's mature nutmeg trees in September 2004, and recovery to around 25% of pre-Ivan output had only been achieved by 2024. The tour (2 to 5 US dollars) walks you through sorting, grading, and shelling, and the smell of dried mace and warm nutmeg oil filled the building.

Belmont Estate, a working cocoa plantation dating to the 1700s, runs a Tree to Bar tour for 25 US dollars including lunch. You crack pods, taste fresh pulp, watch fermentation boxes, and finish at the small chocolate factory where they press 71% organic bars. Vanilla, clove, cinnamon, and allspice trees grow on the property and the guide pulls leaves and pods to crush in your hand.

Grand Etang National Park

The park covers 1,180 acres of tropical rainforest at 530 metres elevation, centred on Grand Etang Lake, an 18-hectare volcanic crater lake. The Grand Etang Visitor Centre opened in 1970 and charges 4 US dollars.

Mona monkeys (Cercopithecus mona), introduced from West Africa in the 1700s by slave-ship crews, hang around the parking area waiting for fruit. The rangers charge 5 US dollars to let you feed them banana from your hand, which is the only sanctioned interaction.

Sauteurs and Leapers Hill

The cliff at Sauteurs where roughly 40 Kalinago men leapt to their deaths in 1651 rather than submit to French colonial rule is now a small park with interpretive signs. Entry is free. The Caribs' Leap memorial faces north toward Carriacou.

Levera Beach and Sandy Island

Levera National Park covers the northeast tip, with mangrove lagoons, a beach where leatherback and hawksbill turtles nest from April to September, and Sandy Island just offshore. I did not see a turtle (March is outside the nesting window) but the empty beach and the view of Carriacou 25 kilometres north made the drive worth it.

Carriacou and Petite Martinique

Carriacou (34 square kilometres, population around 7,500) sits 35 kilometres north of Grenada. The Osprey ferry leaves St George's daily at 9 am, takes 90 minutes, and costs 80 EC dollars round trip (about 30 US dollars). SVG Air also flies the route in 20 minutes for 110 US dollars.

Hillsborough is the capital, a one-street town with a museum, a few rum shops, and the dock. Anse La Roche on the northwest coast is the postcard beach, a 30-minute hike or 15-minute boat ride. Sandy Island, a sandbar with five palm trees offshore from Hillsborough, costs 25 US dollars round trip in a local skiff.

The Big Drum Festival runs annually in March or April and was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017 (note: I am citing the inscription year as commonly listed locally; check UNESCO's official register for the formal year). Traditional wooden boat-building still happens on the beach at Windward, where shipwrights cut frames from white cedar with hand tools.

Petite Martinique (2.4 square kilometres, population around 600) sits two kilometres east of Carriacou and faces the Atlantic. Ferries run twice daily from Hillsborough for 15 EC dollars round trip.

Tier-2 Sights

Belmont Estate beyond the cocoa tour also runs goat farming, a small heritage museum, and a Saturday spice market that pulls farmers from the surrounding parishes.

La Sagesse on the south coast has four small beaches separated by rocky points, a mangrove walk, and a small inn that serves lobster lunch for 35 US dollars.

Annandale Falls combined with the 30-minute drive from St George's makes the easiest half-day waterfall trip if you are short on time.

River Antoine Estate, founded in 1785, is the oldest functioning rum distillery in the Western Hemisphere and still grinds cane on a water-powered wheel built in the 1800s. The Rivers Rum they bottle at 75% overproof is too strong to take on a plane, so they bottle a 69% version for export. Tour is 8 US dollars including a tasting that will rearrange your sinuses.

Lance aux Épines on the south coast holds the quiet beach hotels, the True Blue Bay Resort, Hog Island (accessible by causeway), and Phare Bleu marina at Pointe Calivigny.

Cost Table

The local currency is the East Caribbean Dollar (XCD). The fixed rate has held at 2.70 XCD to 1 US dollar for decades. As of May 2026, 1 US dollar bought roughly 84 Indian rupees, so XCD 1 equals about INR 31. US dollars are accepted in almost every hotel, restaurant, and dive shop, often at the round rate of 2.5 to 1.

The national dish is oil down: breadfruit, salted pork, callaloo, dumplings, and turmeric simmered in coconut milk in a single pot. Every roadside restaurant serves it for 11 to 18 US dollars, and Friday is the traditional cooking day.

Westerhall Distillery has produced rum at the Westerhall Estate since 1854. Their 12-year Plantation rum and the Strong Rum Jack Iron go for 17 to 40 US dollars a bottle.

Planning the Trip

Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) on the southwest peninsula handles direct flights from London (British Airways), Toronto (Air Canada, Sunwing), New York and Boston (JetBlue), Miami and Charlotte (American), and most Caribbean capitals (Caribbean Airlines, LIAT successor InterCaribbean). From India, the cheapest routing in March 2026 was Mumbai-London-Grenada on British Airways for around 95,000 INR return.

Peak season is December to April, dry and warm at 26 to 30 degrees. Hurricane season runs June to November with peak activity in September, the same month Ivan hit in 2004. Spicemas Carnival runs the second week of August (7 to 14 August in 2026), with J'Ouvert at 4 am, Jab Jab covered head to toe in molasses or oil, and the Big Drum band competitions. The Carib Festival on 26 April commemorates the 1651 leap.

English is the official language. Grenadian Creole (Patois, also written Patwa) blends English, French, and West African vocabulary, and you will hear it everywhere outside the hotels.

Drive on the left, UK style. An International Driving Permit is required and police do check at random stops. Roads are narrow, hilly, and busy with mini-bus drivers who do not believe in lane discipline. I rented a small SUV for 75 US dollars a day from a local outfit at the airport and was glad for the high clearance on the road to Royal Mt Carmel Falls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Grenada?
No. Indian citizens get 90 days visa-free on arrival. Bring a return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation for the first few nights.

When is the best time to visit?
December to April is dry and reliable. Spicemas (7 to 14 August 2026) is the cultural highlight if you can tolerate the humidity. Avoid September if you are nervous about hurricanes; that is peak storm month.

How much does the Underwater Sculpture Park cost?
Snorkel tours run 80 to 120 US dollars including boat from Grand Anse or the Carenage. Trip duration is 1.5 hours, with about 45 minutes in the water over the sculptures. Single-tank dives run 90 to 130 US dollars.

Should I take the ferry or fly to Carriacou?
The Osprey ferry is 30 US dollars round trip and takes 90 minutes each way. The SVG Air flight is 110 US dollars and takes 20 minutes. I took the ferry both ways and was fine, but anyone prone to seasickness should fly.

Is driving on the left difficult?
It is the only option. UK-style left-hand traffic, IDP required, narrow roads, and aggressive mini-bus drivers. If you are not confident, hire a driver for 120 to 150 US dollars per day.

What is the plug type?
Type G, the same three-pin UK plug used in India for newer fittings, at 220 to 240 volts and 50 hertz. Indian appliances work without an adapter in most cases.

Is tipping expected?
Yes, 10 to 15% at sit-down restaurants if service is not already added. Most tourist-facing restaurants add 10% automatically. Round up taxi fares.

Is it safe to talk about the 1983 US invasion?
Yes, but as factual history rather than current politics. Operation Urgent Fury on 25 October 1983 is taught in schools and commemorated. Maurice Bishop is widely revered, and his portrait hangs in many homes. Read the room and let locals lead the conversation.

Cultural Notes

The population is roughly 85% of West African descent, with smaller East Indian (around 7%), mixed, and European communities. Family networks are tight, Sunday church is widely observed, and quiet greetings on the street are expected even between strangers.

Spicemas Carnival runs 7 to 14 August 2026 over four days. J'Ouvert at 4 am Monday morning is the most famous element: Jab Jab and Jab Molassie revellers covered head to toe in oil, molasses, mud, or paint, dancing through St George's behind soca and drum bands until dawn. Big Drum Music from Carriacou, formally recognised by UNESCO in its intangible heritage work in 2017, anchors the more traditional events on the smaller island.

Maurice Bishop (13 March 1979 to 19 October 1983) remains a profoundly respected figure. The international airport carries his name, his portrait sits in homes and rum shops, and his birthday (29 May) is informally observed. The Bernard Coard faction that killed him served prison terms and was released in stages between 2007 and 2009. The US invasion on 25 October 1983 ended the People's Revolutionary Army government and is officially commemorated as Thanksgiving Day in Grenada on the same date. I will not take a political position; locals hold a range of views and the history is sensitive but openly discussed.

Pre-Trip Preparation

  • Confirm 90-day visa-free entry with a return or onward ticket and accommodation for the first stay
  • Pack a Type G plug adapter for older sockets (some properties still use Type A or B from the post-1983 US-supported reconstruction era)
  • Buy reef-safe mineral sunscreen before arrival; Molinere Beauséjour MPA has banned chemical sunscreens since 2020 and supplies on the island are limited and overpriced
  • Bring DEET-based mosquito repellent; dengue and Zika are present, particularly in the wet season
  • Carry an International Driving Permit if you plan to rent
  • Mix of cash and cards: US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, XCD is the official local currency, and Visa and Mastercard work at hotels, supermarkets, and most restaurants but not at roadside spice stalls
  • Bring small US dollar bills for taxis, tips, and entrance fees
