Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Complete Guide 2026: Hyderabad, Tirupati, Vizag, Amaravati, Warangal
TL;DR
I have travelled through the Telugu states a dozen times across two decades, and 2026 is the cleanest window I have seen to cover both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in one disciplined loop. Telangana hits its 12-year statehood mark in June, the Kakatiya capital at Warangal has fully digested its 2021 UNESCO inscription for Ramappa Temple, and Andhra Pradesh has restarted infrastructure work after the 2024 announcement reaffirming Visakhapatnam as the executive capital. Hyderabad anchors any sane itinerary with Charminar from 1591, Golconda Fort, Mecca Masjid, the Salar Jung Museum which holds the third-largest single-collector museum holding in the world, and Ramoji Film City spread across 2,000 acres as the largest film studio complex on the planet. Tirupati delivers Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, the world's richest temple by donations, with a structured Sri Vari Seva and Sri Padmavathi circuit downhill. Visakhapatnam handles the coast with Yarada Beach, Borra Caves, Araku Valley coffee country, and the INS Kursura Submarine Museum. Vijayawada and the Amaravati Buddhist site on the UNESCO Tentative List anchor the central Krishna belt. I budget 70,000 to 130,000 INR or roughly 840 to 1,560 USD for ten days at midrange comfort. October to March is the dry sweet spot. This guide gives you the full background, five Tier-1 anchors, five Tier-2 detours, cost math, a six-paragraph planning section, eight FAQs, Telugu phrases, cultural notes, prep checklist, three itineraries from 5 to 10 days, related guides, and government sources.
Why 2026
Three pieces line up for 2026 in a way they did not even two years ago. First, Ramappa Temple at Palampet near Warangal was inscribed by UNESCO in July 2021 as the Kakatiya Rudreshwara Temple, and the surrounding village access, lakeside parking, and interpretive signage have now had four full seasons to mature. The crowd is still nothing like Hampi or Khajuraho, which means I get the sandstone reliefs and the floating bricks of the vimana more or less to myself on a Tuesday morning. Second, Telangana state crosses its 12-year mark in June 2026, having separated from Andhra Pradesh on June 2, 2014 with Hyderabad as a shared capital. That shared-capital arrangement formally ended in 2024, and Hyderabad is now the undivided capital of Telangana while Andhra Pradesh has confirmed Visakhapatnam as its executive capital after years of switching between Amaravati and a three-capital model. Third, the Vande Bharat and new Vande Metro services have stitched Secunderabad, Warangal, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Tirupati into a single rail spine that I now use instead of flying short hops. Add the fact that the rupee is sitting around 83 to 84 against the dollar, and a traveller from the United States, the UK, or the eurozone gets very strong value per day. If you have been postponing the Telugu states because they felt scattered, 2026 is the cleanest year to fix that.
Background
The Telugu-speaking region has one of the longest unbroken political memories in the subcontinent. The Satavahana dynasty ruled from the 2nd century BCE to the 2nd century CE with Amaravati on the Krishna River as a major Buddhist centre, where the Mahachaitya stupa was carved with limestone medallions that now sit in the Chennai Government Museum, the British Museum, and the Amaravati site museum. The Ikshvakus followed at Nagarjunakonda, a Buddhist university and stupa complex that was painstakingly relocated to an island when the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir was built in the 1960s. The Pallavas and the Eastern Chalukyas shaped temple architecture along the Krishna and Godavari deltas, and the Kakatiya dynasty from the 12th to 14th centuries built Warangal Fort, the Thousand Pillar Temple, and Ramappa Temple. Vijayanagara absorbed the south after the Kakatiyas fell, and Lepakshi in present-day Anantapur district preserves the hanging pillar and the unfinished Kalyana Mantapa from that era. The Qutb Shahi sultans ruled from Golconda between 1518 and 1687, founding Hyderabad in 1591 with Charminar at its centre, before Aurangzeb absorbed the territory into the Mughal empire. The Asaf Jahi Nizams ruled from 1724 until accession to the Indian Union in 1948, leaving behind Chowmahalla Palace, Falaknuma, the Salar Jung collection, and a Hyderabadi cuisine that fuses Persian, Turkic, Telugu, and Marathwada elements. Telangana separated from Andhra in 2014, Hyderabad remained shared until 2024, and the two states now run independent tourism, transport, and capital projects.
Tier-1 Anchors
Hyderabad: Charminar, Golconda, Salar Jung, Ramoji, and the biryani question
Hyderabad is where I start every trip into the Telugu states because the airport is the cleanest in the region and the city packs five top-tier anchors inside a 50 kilometre radius. Charminar was completed in 1591 by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, four minarets each 56 metres tall framing a square arch at the heart of the Old City. I climb it at 9 am before the bazaar traffic peaks, then walk to Mecca Masjid next door, which holds bricks from Mecca in its central arch and seats around 10,000 worshippers. The Salar Jung Museum is a 20-minute auto ride away and holds the world's third-largest single-collector museum holding by breadth of objects, including the veiled Rebecca marble, the double statue of Mephistopheles and Margaretta, and Aurangzeb's sword. Golconda Fort sits 11 kilometres west of the city, a 16th century citadel famous for the clap-echo system at the Bala Hissar gate that signals across the ramparts. The sound and light show in the evening covers Qutb Shahi history without padding. Ramoji Film City lies 30 kilometres southeast on the Vijayawada highway, a 2,000 acre complex that holds the Guinness record for the largest film studio complex in the world, with backdrops for Bahubali and dozens of Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi productions. On biryani, I split test runs between Paradise in Secunderabad and Bawarchi in RTC X Roads. Paradise is the cleaner, more reliable plate. Bawarchi is the spicier, denser, more characterful one. Try both, do not pick a side online before you taste.
Tirupati and Tirumala: the world's richest temple
Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, perched on the seventh hill of Tirumala above Tirupati town in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, is the world's richest temple by recorded donations, regularly logging more than 3,000 crore rupees in annual hundi income. Around 60,000 to 100,000 pilgrims pass through daily on normal days, climbing past 1,00,000 during Brahmotsavam in September. I always book the Sri Vari Seva or the 300 rupee special darshan ticket on the TTD portal four to eight weeks ahead, which compresses a 20-hour general queue into about 3 hours. The Ananda Nilayam gold-plated vimana over the sanctum is the unmistakable visual. Downhill in Tirupati town, the Sri Padmavathi Temple at Tiruchanur, dedicated to the consort of Venkateswara, is treated as a mandatory bookend; pilgrims say a Tirumala visit is incomplete without Padmavathi. I also add Sri Kalahasti, 36 kilometres east, one of the Pancha Bhuta Stalams representing the air element, and Kanipakam Vinayaka Temple, 65 kilometres northwest near Chittoor town, where the swayambhu Ganesha idol is said to grow each year. Photography is banned inside the main sanctum and on the hill core area. Dress code is enforced strictly: dhoti or pyjama with upper cloth for men, saree or salwar for women.
Warangal and Ramappa: the Kakatiya UNESCO core
Warangal sits 145 kilometres northeast of Hyderabad and is the easiest Tier-1 add-on, either as a Vande Bharat day trip or a one-night halt. Warangal Fort, the Kakatiya capital from the 12th to 14th centuries, is best read as a ruined square with four ornate stone toranas at the cardinal points, each carved with floral motifs that became the official emblem of Telangana state after 2014. The Thousand Pillar Temple at Hanamkonda, built by Rudradeva in 1163, is a trikutalayam with shrines to Shiva, Vishnu, and Surya around a central mandapa, with a recently restored stepped tank. Bhadrakali Temple on a small hilltop between Warangal and Hanamkonda holds an 8 foot stone idol of the goddess in a seated posture, unusual for South India. Pakhal Lake, 50 kilometres east, is a 13th century Kakatiya irrigation tank that doubles as a wildlife sanctuary with crocodile sightings. The headline is Ramappa Temple at Palampet, 75 kilometres northeast of Warangal town, inscribed by UNESCO in July 2021 as the Kakatiya Rudreshwara Temple. The 13th century sandstone shikhara is built of lightweight bricks that reportedly float in water, the basalt nandi at the entrance is one of the largest in the country, and the bracket figures of dancing women on the eastern face are some of the finest medieval reliefs in South India.
Visakhapatnam, Yarada, Borra, Araku, and the submarine
Visakhapatnam, called Vizag locally, is the coastal anchor of Andhra Pradesh and was reaffirmed as the executive capital of the state in 2024. The city sits between two ridges on the Bay of Bengal and gives me three full days of varied terrain. Yarada Beach on the southern side, reached by a coastal switchback past the Dolphin's Nose lighthouse, is the cleanest swimmable beach within the city and far less crowded than the central RK Beach. The INS Kursura Submarine Museum on RK Beach is a decommissioned Soviet-built Foxtrot class submarine beached in 2002 and converted into a walk-through gallery; the conning tower views and torpedo room are surprisingly intact. Borra Caves, 90 kilometres inland on the Araku rail route, are limestone karst caves where the Gosthani River emerges, with a natural Shiva lingam formation that local Jatapu and Porja tribal communities have venerated for centuries. Araku Valley sits at 910 metres in the Eastern Ghats and produces the only Indian coffee with a recognised geographical indication outside Coorg and the Western Ghats. I take the morning Vistadome train from Visakhapatnam to Araku, do the Tribal Museum and the Padmapuram Gardens, sleep at an APTDC haritha resort, and ride back the next afternoon. Add Simhachalam Temple on the city's northern ridge for a 13th century Lord Narasimha shrine where the deity is covered in sandalwood paste except on Akshaya Tritiya.
Vijayawada, Amaravati, and the Lepakshi Buddhist-Vijayanagara axis
The Krishna River valley between Vijayawada and Amaravati is the spiritual centre of Andhra Pradesh and one of the most overlooked Tier-1 zones in South India. Vijayawada is a working river city dominated by Kanaka Durga Temple on Indrakeeladri Hill, where the goddess is said to have killed Mahishasura before slaying him again at Mysore. The Prakasam Barrage spans the Krishna at the city centre and the Undavalli Caves, 8 kilometres southwest, are rock-cut Hindu and Buddhist caves from the 4th to 5th centuries CE with a four-storey monolithic facade and a reclining Vishnu in the upper chamber. Amaravati, 40 kilometres west, was the capital of the Satavahanas and an early Buddhist centre where the Mahachaitya stupa once stood encased in carved limestone slabs; the site museum holds replicas and surviving fragments, and the broader Amaravati region is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. Lepakshi, technically in Anantapur district of southern Andhra Pradesh but easiest reached as a side trip from Bengaluru, is a 16th century Vijayanagara temple complex famous for the hanging pillar that does not touch the floor, the unfinished Kalyana Mantapa, and the Veerabhadra murals on the inner ceiling that I rank with Ajanta for sheer narrative density.
Tier-2 Detours
Nagarjuna Sagar and Nagarjunakonda Island
Nagarjuna Sagar dam, completed in 1967 across the Krishna, drowned the original Buddhist university site of Nagarjunakonda, which was relocated stone by stone to an island in the reservoir. A small ferry runs from Vijayapuri South to the island, and the museum on the island holds 3rd century Ikshvaku stupas, viharas, and inscribed limestone slabs. Plan a full day from Hyderabad, 150 kilometres each way.
Undavalli Caves
Eight kilometres from Vijayawada, the Undavalli Caves are a four-storey monolithic rock-cut complex from the 4th to 5th centuries CE, originally Buddhist and later converted to a Hindu Vaishnavite site. The top floor holds a reclining Vishnu carved from a single granite block. I pair this with a Krishna River sunset at Bhavani Island.
Konaseema delta
The Konaseema region around Amalapuram in East Godavari district is the green coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh, formed by the seven distributaries of the Godavari. Coconut plantations, paddy fields, country boat rides, and the Antarvedi temple at the river mouth make this the slow, rural counterweight to the temple circuits. Two nights at a homestay near Dindi resets the pace.
Anantapur, Lepakshi, and Puttaparthi
Anantapur district anchors southwestern Andhra. Lepakshi is covered above. Puttaparthi, home of the Sathya Sai Baba ashram, is 80 kilometres west and worth a half-day stop for the ashram complex and the Chaitanya Jyoti Museum even for non-devotees. Penukonda Fort, 40 kilometres north of Lepakshi, was a Vijayanagara summer capital and is almost entirely tourist-free.
Bhadrachalam and the Ramayana
Bhadrachalam, on the Godavari in eastern Telangana, holds the Sri Sita Ramachandraswamy Temple, said to mark the spot where Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana spent part of their exile in the Dandakaranya forest. The Sri Rama Navami Kalyanam in April is the largest such celebration in South India.
Cost (INR and USD)
For a midrange traveller in 2026 I plan as follows.
- Domestic flight Delhi or Mumbai to Hyderabad: 5,000 to 8,000 INR or 60 to 96 USD one way
- 3 star or 4 star hotel in Hyderabad, Vizag, or Tirupati: 3,500 to 6,000 INR per night or 42 to 72 USD
- TTD 300 rupee special darshan: 300 INR or 3.6 USD per person; Sri Vari Seva is free but requires booking
- Ramoji Film City day pass: 1,250 to 1,750 INR or 15 to 21 USD
- Vande Bharat Secunderabad to Visakhapatnam chair car: around 1,900 INR or 23 USD
- Auto and Uber within Hyderabad per day: 600 to 1,000 INR or 7 to 12 USD
- Restaurant meal at Paradise or a sit-down Andhra meals: 350 to 700 INR or 4 to 8 USD
- Driver and small SUV per day inclusive of fuel: 4,500 to 6,500 INR or 54 to 78 USD
- Total for 10 days midrange comfort: 70,000 to 130,000 INR or 840 to 1,560 USD per person twin sharing
Tirupati free queues are possible but plan 16 to 24 hours; the small ticket cost saves a day.
Planning by Month
October to early December is the cleanest window of the year. The southwest monsoon is gone, the northeast monsoon mostly hits coastal Tamil Nadu, and temperatures sit between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius across the plateau. This is when I take groups out.
Mid-December through February is the cool dry season inland. Hyderabad mornings can drop to 12 degrees Celsius, which is comfortable for Charminar and Golconda walking. The coast at Vizag stays warmer at 20 to 28 degrees Celsius. Christmas and New Year see Tirupati queue lengths balloon; book accommodation by October.
March is the shoulder. Days warm to 32 to 36 degrees Celsius inland, but Lepakshi and Anantapur are still tolerable. Sri Rama Navami at Bhadrachalam falls in March or April depending on the lunar calendar and is worth planning around if you want to witness the Kalyanam.
April through June is the inland heat trap. Hyderabad and Warangal regularly cross 40 degrees Celsius and Anantapur touches 44. I do not recommend the plateau in this window unless you confine yourself to early morning walks and air-conditioned interiors. Vizag and the Konaseema coast stay around 32 to 36 degrees Celsius with sea breeze and remain doable.
June to September is the southwest monsoon. Telangana gets moderate rain, coastal Andhra gets heavier rain especially in July and August, and Araku Valley turns deep green. The Tirumala Brahmotsavam, the biggest annual festival at the world's richest temple, runs for nine days in September or October depending on the Sravana Nakshatra. Hotels in Tirupati double in price during these dates; book three months ahead or skip the festival window.
For most North American, European, and Australian travellers, I recommend either late October to mid-December or mid-January to mid-March. Avoid the long weekend around Republic Day on January 26 if you want quiet temples.
FAQs
How do I book Tirumala darshan from abroad and how long does it really take
Use the TTD official portal, ttdsevaonline.com, and create an account at least eight weeks ahead. The 300 rupee special darshan slot fills first; if it is full, try the Sri Vari Seva at no cost, which gives you priority entry in exchange for one to two hours of voluntary service in the kitchens or queue lines. With a booked slot, plan 3 to 5 hours from entry at Vaikuntham Queue Complex to exit past the Ananda Nilayam. Without a booking, expect 16 to 24 hours in the free queue.
Paradise versus Bawarchi for Hyderabadi biryani: which one wins
Both. Paradise in Secunderabad is the more consistent, cleaner, mass-volume operation and is the safer first taste. Bawarchi in RTC X Roads is spicier, richer, and more old-city in character. Locals are split roughly 50-50. Order the mutton dum at both, on separate days, and decide for yourself. Skip the chicken if you are testing.
Is it easy to be vegetarian in the Telugu states
Yes. Andhra and Telangana have some of the strongest vegetarian traditions in India outside Gujarat. Andhra meals are a thali of rice, sambar, rasam, two or three vegetable curries, pickles, papadam, and curd, often with gongura or mango pickle. Tirupati and Tirumala are entirely vegetarian zones. Hyderabad Old City around Charminar is the only stretch where non-vegetarian dominates.
Is Ramoji Film City worth a full day
If you travel with children or have any interest in Indian cinema, yes. The 2,000 acre complex is the largest in the world and you can comfortably spend eight hours touring sets used for Bahubali, RRR, and dozens of older Telugu and Hindi films. If you have only one day in Hyderabad and have already seen film studios elsewhere, skip it and use the day for Golconda plus Salar Jung.
Are Visakhapatnam beaches safe for swimming
RK Beach in the city centre has strong undertow currents and lifeguards routinely restrict swimming to ankle depth. Yarada Beach, 15 kilometres south past Dolphin's Nose, is calmer in winter months but still not a swim destination by global standards. Rishikonda Beach on the northern side is the most reliable for shallow swimming.
Do I need Telugu or will Hindi and English work
In Hyderabad, English and Hindi work well alongside Telugu. In Vizag and Vijayawada, English works in hotels and Telugu dominates on the street, with Hindi understood by most. In Tirupati, expect Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada in roughly equal measure given the cross-state pilgrim traffic. A few Telugu phrases go a long way.
When is the Tirumala Brahmotsavam and should I attend
Brahmotsavam runs for nine days in September or October, timed to the Sravana Nakshatra of the Telugu month of Kanya. It is the largest annual festival at the world's richest temple, with the Garuda Seva procession on day five drawing more than a million pilgrims. Attend only if you are comfortable with extreme crowds and have a confirmed accommodation and darshan booking made at least three months in advance.
Can I do Hyderabad to Tirupati by road in one day
Yes but it is a 560 kilometre drive that takes 9 to 11 hours including breaks. I prefer the overnight Charminar Express train or the Vande Bharat which is faster, and a domestic flight from Hyderabad to Tirupati or Renigunta which takes 70 minutes and costs 3,500 to 5,500 INR.
Telugu Phrases
- Namaskaaram: Hello and respectful greeting
- Dhanyavaadalu: Thank you
- Daya chesi: Please
- Entha?: How much?
- Ayushman bhava: May you have long life, blessing used by elders
Cultural Notes
The Telugu states are roughly 85 percent Hindu, with a significant Muslim minority concentrated in Hyderabad where the Old City around Charminar runs close to 30 percent Muslim. Christian, Sikh, Jain, and Parsi communities are smaller but historically present, especially in coastal Andhra and old Hyderabad. The Buddhist heritage of Amaravati and Nagarjunakonda predates the current religious map by nearly two millennia and shows up in archaeology rather than worship. Telugu is a Dravidian language spoken by around 75 million people across the two states and the diaspora, written in a rounded script descended from the Kadamba and old Telugu-Kannada lineage. Hyderabadi biryani uses the dum technique with sealed lids and slow charcoal heat; Andhra cuisine outside Hyderabad runs on gongura sorrel leaves, raw mango, dry red chilli, and tamarind, balanced by filter coffee and curd rice. Kuchipudi, born in Krishna district, is one of the eight classical Indian dance forms and is taught seriously across both states alongside Bharatanatyam from the southern border districts. The Telugu film industry, based in Hyderabad and increasingly called Tollywood, is the largest film industry in the world by number of films produced per year, ahead of Hindi cinema by volume. Charminar's four minarets, completed in 1591, are the visual symbol of the city and feature on Telangana state insignia. Modesty in temple dress is enforced strictly at Tirumala, Simhachalam, and Bhadrachalam; carry a dhoti or shawl.
