India Christian Heritage 2026: Saint Thomas, Kerala, Goa, Velankanni, Mumbai and Bandel Pilgrim Guide

TL;DR

I planned three trips across Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and West Bengal to follow India's Christian story from the 52 CE Saint Thomas landing at Cranganore to the 2 million pilgrims at Velankanni. Christians form 2.3 percent of India (28 million), Kerala 18 percent, Goa 25 percent, and Mizoram, Nagaland and Meghalaya all above 86 percent. This guide covers four pilgrim circuits, costs in INR and USD, three itineraries, eight FAQs and phrases in five languages.

Why Visit India Christian Heritage in 2026

One fact surprises most visitors I meet: Christianity reached India in 52 CE, when the Apostle Saint Thomas stepped ashore at Cranganore in Kerala, decades before it took root in most of Europe. I followed that story across five regions in 2026.

The 22nd Solemn Exposition of the relics of Saint Francis Xavier at Basilica Bom Jesus ran from 21 November 2024 to 5 January 2025, drawing the largest Catholic gathering Asia hosts in any decade. Old Goa, inscribed by UNESCO in 1986 for its churches and convents, was visibly fuller during my late January visit. Velankanni Pilgrim Town, 8 km along the Nagapattinam coast in Tamil Nadu, remains the second largest Marian pilgrimage in Asia after Lourdes, with around 2 million pilgrims arriving each year and the main Velankanni Festival across late August into early September.

I followed four classic Christian pilgrim routes: Kerala (Syrian Orthodox, Mar Thoma, Catholic Latin Rite), Goa (Portuguese Catholic 1510 to 1961), Velankanni and Chennai in Tamil Nadu, and Mumbai with Bandra Mount Mary Basilica from 1640. A fifth stop in Bandel, West Bengal, covers the Portuguese Augustinian Basilica from 1599 about 50 km from Kolkata. With eleven main Christian denominations and 28 million members, the depth on the ground feels larger than the 2.3 percent national share suggests.

Background

I think of Indian Christianity in three waves. The first is apostolic. Saint Thomas the Apostle landed at Cranganore (today's Kodungallur, Kerala) in 52 CE, founded seven and a half churches along the Malabar Coast, and was martyred at Mylapore near Madras around 72 CE. From this root grew the Syrian Orthodox tradition, the Mar Thoma Church and the Eastern Catholic communities I met across central Kerala.

The second wave is Portuguese. They established their Indian capital at Goa in 1510 and held parts of the western coast until December 1961. Portuguese missionaries built the Catholic Latin Rite presence in Old Goa, Bandel and Bombay. Saint Francis Xavier reached Goa in 1542 and died in 1552, and his incorrupt body now rests at Basilica Bom Jesus, built 1594 to 1605.

The third wave is British and Protestant. The Raj ran from 1858 to 1947, though Protestant missionary work began earlier. The Welsh Calvinistic Methodist mission sent Thomas Jones to the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya in 1841, the Welsh reached the Mizo around 1894, and American Baptist William Pettigrew began work among the Naga in 1872. The result today: Mizoram 87 percent Christian, Nagaland 87 percent, Meghalaya 86 percent, the highest shares anywhere in India. The Khasi and Jaintia kept their matrilineal society alongside their new faith, and Sixth Schedule with Article 244A still shield those tribal arrangements.

Within India's 28 million Christians (2.3 percent), eleven main denominations cover Syrian Orthodox, Mar Thoma, Latin Rite Catholic, Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankara, Anglican via Church of South India, Church of North India, Baptist, Pentecostal, Lutheran and Methodist. Across all five circuits I found a Christian, Hindu and Muslim cohabitation I want to describe with respect: shared streets, festivals and food, with churches, temples and mosques often within five minutes of one another.

Tier-1 Highlights

Kerala: Saint Thomas, Syrian Orthodox and the Cochin Cross-Heritage

Kerala carries the deepest Indian Christian roots, and the state is 18 percent Christian today. I started at Kodungallur, the historical Cranganore where Saint Thomas arrived in 52 CE, and worked south through Mar Thoma and Catholic Latin Rite parishes. Around 13 km away sits Cheraman Juma Mosque, founded around 629 CE, which several Kerala traditions regard as the oldest mosque on the subcontinent and which sits within the same coastal cultural zone that received Saint Thomas.

In Fort Cochin I visited St Francis Church, built in 1503 and recognised as the first European-built church in India. Vasco da Gama was buried here for fourteen years from 1524 to 1538 before his remains went back to Lisbon, and his original tombstone is still on the floor. A short walk away in Mattancherry I reached the Paradesi Synagogue, dedicated in 1568 and the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth. The Cochin Jewish community has fallen from about 3,000 in 1948 to a few dozen today, and the Anjuvannam copper plate of around 1000 CE records its early trading privileges. I walked all three sites in one afternoon, and the closeness of synagogue, Catholic church and Hindu temple is the clearest expression of pan-Kerala heritage I know.

Old Goa: UNESCO Churches and Convents 1986

Old Goa was inscribed by UNESCO in 1986 for its churches and convents from the Portuguese 1510 to 1961 era. Basilica Bom Jesus, built 1594 to 1605, holds the incorrupt body of Saint Francis Xavier who died in 1552. The 22nd Exposition from 21 November 2024 to 5 January 2025 set a record for Asian Catholic pilgrim numbers, and the Basilica remains the central Asian Catholic pilgrim centre between expositions. Se Cathedral, built 1562 to 1619, is the largest Catholic church in Asia at roughly 76 m by 55 m.

Three more sites sit within walking distance: the Convent of St Francis of Assisi from 1521, the Church of Saint Cajetan from 1665 modelled on St Peter's in Rome, and the Chapel of Saint Catherine. Goa is 25 percent Christian, and the pan-Goa heritage in villages around Old Goa, from azulejo tilework to Konkani hymns, kept reminding me that the Portuguese 1510 to 1961 footprint is not only urban.

Velankanni: Madonna Apparition 1560 and 2 Million Pilgrims a Year

Velankanni Pilgrim Town sits 8 km along the Nagapattinam coast in Tamil Nadu. The Annai Velankanni Basilica, founded in 1583 and rebuilt over centuries, marks where Our Lady is said to have appeared to a young cowherd around 1560. Pope John XXIII raised it to Basilica Minor in 1962, and around 2 million pilgrims arrive each year, with the main Velankanni Festival across late August into early September on a nine-day novena cycle. I went in October to avoid the peak and still found the precinct full. Velankanni is the second largest Marian pilgrimage in Asia after Lourdes, and the pan-Tamil Christian heritage, with Tamil hymns and prasadam-style blessed items, makes it feel deeply Indian.

Mumbai: Bandra Mount Mary Basilica 1640

Mumbai is around 5 percent Christian, about 2.5 million people, and Bandra is the heart of the city's Catholic life. Mount Mary Basilica was founded in 1640 on a hill above Bandra, and the annual Bandra Fair in early September draws more than a million visitors over the octave of the nativity of Mary. The 5.6 km Bandra-Worli Sea Link opened in 2009 connects Christian Bandra with Hindu Walkeshwar and the Banganga tank in one quick line. The Bandra Christian community has shaped Maharashtra Catholic life since the Portuguese arrived in the 1530s.

Bandel: Portuguese Bengal 1599

In West Bengal I took a 50 km train from Kolkata along the Hooghly River to Bandel Basilica, founded in 1599 by Portuguese Augustinian Friars. It is the oldest Christian church in Bengal, and the Cardinal Pinto chapel inside holds an image of Our Lady of Happy Voyage that local fishermen still visit. Bandel forms the easternmost point of the historic Portuguese coastal cross from Goa across Bengal and out to Pondicherry French territory.

Tier-2 Highlights

Chennai: San Thome Basilica and Saint Thomas Tomb

Chennai's San Thome Basilica in Mylapore covers the traditional 72 CE tomb of Saint Thomas the Apostle, who according to local memory was martyred on Little Mount nearby. The current Cathedral Basilica was rebuilt in 1898 in a neo-Gothic plan, and it is one of only three basilicas worldwide built directly over the tomb of an Apostle. I paired this with Velankanni in a single Tamil Nadu loop.

Pondicherry: French Catholic Heritage

Pondicherry was French from 1674 to 1954 and I felt that history along the seafront. Notre Dame des Anges, originally built in 1789, faces the sea, while Sacred Heart Basilica from 1908 carries Gothic Revival stained glass. I added the small Saint Michel chapel and a quiet hour at the nearby Aurobindo Ashram. The pan-French Indian Christian heritage felt different from the Portuguese style further west.

Mumbai Cross-Heritage Beyond Bandra

Beyond Mount Mary I spent time at St Thomas Cathedral in Fort, consecrated in 1718 as the first Anglican church in Bombay, and at the Afghan Church in Colaba from 1858. The Mumbai Christian cross between Catholic Bandra and Anglican Fort, with Tamil and Bengali parishes between, makes the city a microcosm of Indian Christianity.

Northeast Seven Sisters: Welsh and American Baptist Christian Belt

Mizoram is 87 percent Christian, Nagaland is 87 percent, and Meghalaya is 86 percent, the highest shares in India. The Welsh Calvinistic Methodist mission sent Thomas Jones to the Khasi Hills in 1841, the Welsh reached the Mizo around 1894, and American Baptist William Pettigrew began work among the Naga in 1872. The Hornbill Festival in Nagaland runs 1 to 10 December and brings together 16 major Naga tribes. Sixth Schedule and Article 244A protect tribal land and law, and the Khasi and Jaintia matrilineal society remains living daily practice.

Jewish Heritage: Cochin and Bnei Menashe

India's Jewish heritage is tiny but threaded through the Christian story. The Paradesi Synagogue at Mattancherry was dedicated in 1568 and is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth. Cochin's Jewish community has dropped from about 3,000 in 1948 to a few dozen today, while the Bnei Menashe community in Manipur and Mizoram represents a separate cross-northeast tradition. The Anjuvannam copper plate of around 1000 CE records the early settlement that traces back to the same coastal openness that welcomed Saint Thomas in 52 CE.

Auto rickshaw, 5 km city ride 80 to 200 1 to 2.50
e-Visa, 60 days 2,100 25

I treated Heritage Hotels India, with more than 1,500 member properties across the country, as my anchor lodging network, and I budgeted around 100 to 500 USD per night for those stays while keeping mid-range hotels around Velankanni and Bandel under 50 USD. The 22nd Bom Jesus Exposition between 21 November 2024 and 5 January 2025 pushed Goa room rates up sharply, so I locked in my January nights six months ahead.

Planning

The best window for the full Christian Heritage Pilgrim Tour is October to March, when most of India sits cool between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius. Christmas on 25 December is celebrated widely, Easter in March or April is biggest in Kerala and Goa, the Velankanni Festival runs late August into early September, and the Goa Carnival is a 3-day pre-Lent event in February. Monsoon from July to September is moderate on the Tamil Nadu and Bengal sides but heavy in Goa and Kerala, while April to June can reach 45 degrees in the north. November to January brings smog in Delhi and I packed an N95 mask for transit days.

For paperwork I used the Indian e-Visa at 25 USD for a 60-day entry. Book any pan-India Christian Heritage circuit six to twelve months ahead, especially during Bom Jesus expositions, the Velankanni festival, and the Hornbill Festival from 1 to 10 December. Heritage Hotels India properties fill quickly across these windows.

Flights are easy. Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa connect Cochin COK, Goa GOI and MOPA, Tiruchirappalli TRZ for Velankanni, Mumbai BOM, Kolkata CCU, Chennai MAA, and Pondicherry via Chennai. Domestic legs run one to three hours, and international flights from Europe, the Gulf or East Asia land in six to nine hours.

For internal transport I used the Vande Bharat semi-high-speed network, the Yamuna Expressway 165 km between Delhi and Agra in around two hours, and the Eastern Peripheral and KMP Western Peripheral expressways around Delhi. For a slower premium option, the Maharaja Express, Palace on Wheels and Deccan Odyssey luxury trains run 7-night circuits. The Indian Coffee House cooperative, founded in 1942, gave me cheap multilingual meals in almost every city.

India runs continental in the north with hot summers above 45 degrees from April to June, a southwest monsoon from July to September, and cool winters between 5 and 20 degrees from December to January, with Delhi AQI usually highest from November to January.

On dress, I covered shoulders and knees inside churches, removed shoes at Hindu temples, and treated mosque interiors with full modesty. Inner sanctums at some Catholic shrines and Hindu temples prohibit photography. The Mughal, Indo-Saracenic and British heritage layers all sit alongside the Christian story, and a simple Christmas, Eid Mubarak or Diwali greeting opens doors.

FAQs

  1. How fast is an Indian e-Visa? The e-Visa usually arrives within 72 hours at 25 USD for 60 days. Indian nationals need no visa. Book the Christian Heritage Pilgrim Tour and Heritage Hotels India properties six to twelve months ahead, especially around the Velankanni festival when up to 2 million pilgrims arrive.

  2. Where do I get cash? ATMs are widely available across Cochin, Goa, Velankanni, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Pondicherry, dispensing INR. USD changers are common in airports and major hotel zones, and most cards accept cash advance.

  3. Can I buy alcohol along this route? Goa, Mumbai, Chennai and Pondicherry have licensed bars and shops. Bihar has been dry since April 2016, and Gujarat sells through a permit system. Reserve jungle camps and Heritage Hotels India properties at 100 to 500 USD per night carry full bar service. Sikh pilgrim cities and strict Hindu pilgrim centres such as Mathura, Vrindavan and Tirumala run dry.

  4. Vegetarian or non-vegetarian along the route? Christian, Catholic, Anglican and Welsh missionary areas all eat meat and fish freely. Goan Portuguese cuisine and Kerala Syrian Christian cuisine anchor the non-veg tradition, while Bengali Christian families share pan-Bengal sweet traditions. Pan-Tamil Iyengar Brahmin cuisine is fully vegetarian, and Indian Coffee House from 1942 with Saravana Bhavan (350 plus outlets worldwide since 1981) give reliable veg options for 50 to 300 INR a meal.

  5. Dress code at churches, and can I take photos? Shoulders and knees covered inside Catholic monasteries across Goa and at the Bom Jesus 22nd Exposition between 21 November 2024 and 5 January 2025. Other days are casual. Photography is free across most Christian Heritage sites including the Bom Jesus exposition exterior, but inner sanctuaries at some Catholic shrines prohibit it. Heritage Hotels India properties allow heritage photography freely.

  6. Main Christian denominations in India? Christians are 2.3 percent of India, about 28 million. Kerala 18 percent, Goa 25 percent, Mizoram, Nagaland and Meghalaya 86 to 87 percent. Eleven main denominations cover Syrian Orthodox, Mar Thoma, Latin Rite Catholic, Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankara, Anglican via Church of South India, Church of North India, Baptist, Pentecostal, Lutheran and Methodist. Welsh missionary Thomas Jones reached Meghalaya in 1841, the Welsh reached the Mizo around 1894, and American Baptist William Pettigrew began work among the Naga in 1872.

  7. What should I expect at Velankanni? A 12-day pan-India Christian Heritage Pilgrim Tour runs 1,500 to 3,000 USD per person depending on Heritage Hotels India inclusions. Velankanni Pilgrim Town receives around 2 million pilgrims a year, peaks late August into early September, and centres on Annai Velankanni Basilica founded 1583 to mark a 1560 Madonna apparition. Pope John XXIII raised it to Basilica Minor in 1962, and it is the second largest Marian pilgrimage in Asia after Lourdes.

  8. What is the Saint Thomas Cross? The Saint Thomas Cross or Mar Thoma Sleeva is an early Christian carved stone cross found across Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It commemorates the Apostle who reached Cranganore Kodungallur in 52 CE and was martyred at Mylapore around 72 CE. The cross appears at San Thome Basilica in Chennai, across pan-Kerala Christian sites and across Goa.

Phrases I Used

I picked up enough in five languages to manage greetings, basic prayer vocabulary and short church conversations. The first column gives Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali and English Christian usage.

  1. Namaste, Hindi general greeting.
  2. Namaskaram, Malayalam greeting in Kerala.
  3. Vanakkam, Tamil greeting at Velankanni and Chennai.
  4. Namaskar, Bengali greeting at Bandel and Kolkata.
  5. Christian, Isaai in Tamil, Khrishtiyan in Hindi.
  6. Saint, Punyavan in Malayalam, Punyavan in Tamil contexts.
  7. Apostle, Sleeha in Malayalam Syrian Christian usage.
  8. Catholic, Katholikka.
  9. Protestant, Protestant or Sabha.
  10. Pentecostal, Pentecost Sabha.
  11. Eastern Orthodox, Purvasabha Orthodox.
  12. Syrian Orthodox, Suriyani Orthodox.
  13. Anglican, Anglican or CSI Sabha.
  14. Christmas, Bada Din in Hindi, Christmas across all languages.
  15. Easter, Easter or Punyathna in Malayalam church usage.
  16. Pentecost, Pentecost Naal.
  17. Mass, Qurbana in Syriac usage, Mass in Latin Rite parishes.
  18. Eucharist, Pavithra Qurbana.
  19. Bible, Bible or Veda Pustak.
  20. Cross, Sleeva in Malayalam Syrian usage, Cross in English.

Cultural Notes

The respectful starting point on the whole circuit was the 52 CE Saint Thomas arrival at Cranganore. The Apostle is shared memory across Syrian Orthodox, Mar Thoma and Catholic Latin Rite parishes, and the cross-confessional Saint Thomas Day pilgrimage along the Malabar Coast still pulls members from all eleven main denominations. The Welsh missionary work since 1841 in Meghalaya and American Baptist work since 1872 in Nagaland sit beside this older Apostolic root rather than replacing it.

In Old Goa I learned to slow down inside Basilica Bom Jesus, where Saint Francis Xavier has rested incorrupt since 1552 and where the 22nd Exposition between 21 November 2024 and 5 January 2025 drew Asian pilgrim numbers locals still talk about. Se Cathedral at 76 m by 55 m is the largest Catholic church in Asia, and the Convent of St Francis of Assisi from 1521 with Church of Saint Cajetan from 1665 round out the UNESCO 1986 inscription. Goa is 25 percent Christian, and the pan-Goa Catholic heritage from the Portuguese 1510 to 1961 era is visible from azulejos to feast day calendars.

Velankanni rewards a quiet posture. The 1560 Madonna apparition, the 1583 basilica, the 1962 elevation to Basilica Minor under Pope John XXIII, and the steady 2 million pilgrims a year over the 8 km Nagapattinam coast precinct give the place a weight the Tamil Christian community carries with care.

In Mumbai, Bandra Mount Mary Basilica from 1640 anchors the pan-Indian Christian cross between Catholic, Anglican, Tamil, Bengali and Welsh-rooted northeast Methodist congregations. The 5.6 km Bandra-Worli Sea Link from 2009 ties Christian Bandra to Hindu Walkeshwar and the Banganga tank in a single line. Bandel Basilica from 1599 represents the Portuguese pan-Bengal Christian heritage 50 km from Kolkata along the Hooghly River. In the northeast, the 80 percent plus Christian belt of Mizoram, Nagaland and Meghalaya, the Khasi and Jaintia matrilineal society, the Hornbill Festival across 1 to 10 December with 16 tribes, and Sixth Schedule with Article 244A form the youngest layer of Indian Christian heritage. I tried throughout to honour the Hindu, Muslim and Christian cohabitation that frames pan-India life.
