India Festival Tourism Complete Guide 2026
TL;DR
I have travelled inside India for festival weeks across eleven states, and the country runs on around fifty plus major festivals every year. Diwali in October to November, Holi in March, Durga Puja in October, Pongal in mid January, Bihu in April, Onam in August to September, Dussehra in October, Goa Carnival in February and the twelve year Kumbh Mela form the core circuit. Eight Indian entries sit on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Plan six to eighteen months ahead.
Why Visit India Festival Tourism 2026
India has roughly 1.4 billion residents, 22 official languages and four main festival traditions covering Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Indigenous communities. Hindus are about 79 percent of the population, Muslims about 14 percent, Christians around 2 percent, Sikhs about 1.7 percent, Buddhists around 0.7 percent, Jains about 0.4 percent and Tribal animist groups around 1 percent. Each community keeps its own calendar, so my trip notebook for any month carries more than one festival on the same week.
Eight Indian inscriptions sit on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2008: Yoga in 2016, Norouz as a shared Persian New Year in 2009, Kalbeliya of Rajasthan in 2010, Lavani of Maharashtra in 2010, Garba of Gujarat in 2023, Bihu of Assam in 2024, Durga Puja of Kolkata in 2021 and Sankirtana of Manipur in 2013. Kumbh Mela was added in 2017. Mughal, Iranian and British layers sit on top of older Vedic and Tamil Sangam roots. After Independence in 1947 and Republic Day on 26 January 1950, the central government turned festival tourism into a soft power tool.
Background
India runs through Hindu lunar dates for most festivals, the Tamil solar calendar for harvest events and the Gregorian calendar for Christian and Republic Day functions. The Hindu calendar is split across regions, so Diwali in Mumbai and Deepavali in Chennai can fall on slightly different dates. I always double check with a local family before I book any internal flight.
The 22 official languages create a layered greeting culture. In a single week in Mumbai I have wished neighbours Diwali Mubarak in Hindi, Subho Bijoya in Bengali to a Durga Puja committee, Pongal Vazhthukkal in Tamil, Onam Aashamsakal in Malayalam at a Kerala canteen and Bohag Bihu Mubarak in Assamese to a Guwahati student. The four festival traditions cross constantly. Eid Mubarak greetings move into Diwali wishes in Old Delhi within two weeks, Christmas at St. Paul's Cathedral in Kolkata follows Durga Puja immersions, and Vesak, Mahavir Jayanti and Gurpurab share the same tourism corridor.
5 Tier-1 Festivals
Diwali, Hindu festival of lights, October to November
Diwali, also called Deepavali in the South, runs five days during the Hindu month of Kartik. The festival honours Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya. Homes use clay diyas, oil lamps, fireworks and sweet boxes. I have spent the main night on Marine Drive in Mumbai, in Connaught Place in Delhi and in the gullies of old Jaipur, and each city builds a separate atmosphere.
Since the new Ram Mandir opened in Ayodhya, the Deepotsav event on the Saryu riverfront has scaled massively. In 2024 the city lit 28 million oil lamps in one evening, a Guinness record. Diwali remains the largest pan India Hindu festival, so domestic flights and hotels in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Jaipur fill by August.
Holi, Hindu spring colours, March
Holi falls on the Phalguni Purnima full moon in March. The Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon stretches across four days, with women playfully striking men with sticks while the men shield themselves and respond with coloured water, reenacting the Krishna and Radha legend. The wider Mathura, Vrindavan and Govardhan circuit celebrates for about a week. I once joined the Brij Bhumi 84 kos Parikrama, a 252 kilometre seven day walking pilgrimage looping Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon and Gokul.
Bhang lassi is part of the local Holi culture but it is stronger than tourists expect. I cap myself at one small glass, and I wear old white cotton clothes. Holi is a pan India spring festival, with strong celebrations in Jaipur, Pushkar, Varanasi and even Goa.
Durga Puja, UNESCO ICH 2021, Kolkata, October
Durga Puja in Kolkata received UNESCO ICH status in 2021. The festival celebrates Goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. The main public viewing window covers four days from Saptami to Vijaya Dashami, although the wider Navaratri spans ten days. Bengal builds more than 4,000 pandals, the temporary art pavilions that host the idols, and Kolkata alone hosts roughly 3,000.
The Bengal Renaissance, anchored by Rabindranath Tagore from 1861 to 1941, shaped the artistic standard. On Vijaya Dashami evening, families immerse the idols in the Hooghly and call out Bolo Durga Mai Ki Jai. Bengali diaspora communities in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad mirror the festival.
Pongal, Tamil, 14 to 17 January
Pongal is a four day Tamil harvest festival running 14 to 17 January, anchored on the solar Tamil New Year. The four days are Bhogi, Surya Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kanu Pongal, honouring the Sun God and Lord Indra. The roots reach into the Sangam era, more than 2,000 years old. I greet Tamil families with Pongal Vazhthukkal.
The peak zone is rural Tamil Nadu, from Madurai and Thanjavur to villages around Coimbatore. Chennai also hosts kolam rangoli competitions, jallikattu bull events in surrounding districts and family meals built around the sweet pongal rice dish boiled in fresh milk inside a clay pot.
Bihu, Assamese New Year, UNESCO ICH 2024, 14 to 15 April
Bohag Bihu, the Assamese New Year, falls on 14 to 15 April and joined the UNESCO ICH list in 2024. Assam keeps three Bihu festivals: Bohag Bihu in April, Magh Bihu in January for the harvest and Kati Bihu in October for the standing crop. The Bohag Bihu Mela extends roughly one month from late March into April, with Bihu dance circles in paddy field villages around Guwahati, Jorhat and Sivasagar.
Bhupen Hazarika, the Bharat Ratna recipient who lived from 1926 to 2011 and is fondly called Bhupen Da, lifted Assamese music into national consciousness, and his songs still play on every Bihu stage.
5 Tier-2 Festivals
Onam, Kerala, August to September
Onam is a ten day Kerala harvest festival between August and September honouring the legendary King Mahabali and Vishnu's fifth avatar Vamana. The dates run from Atham to Thiruvonam. The Onasadya feast is a 26 dish vegetarian Kerala thali served on a banana leaf, and I always book a homestay in Alleppey or Kochi so a local family invites me to one. Pulikali, the tiger dance of Thrissur, and Vallam Kali, the snake boat race on Punnamada Lake including the Nehru Trophy in August, frame the visual side of the festival.
Dussehra, Mysore, October, ten days of royal heritage
Dussehra at Mysore Palace, also called Amba Vilas Palace which was completed in 1912, lights more than 100,000 bulbs every evening for ten days during Navaratri, closing on Vijayadashami. The Jamboo Savari procession features richly caparisoned elephants leading the royal Dasara parade through the city. The Wodeyar Dynasty, which ruled Mysore from 1399 to 1947, started the format, and the Karnataka state government keeps it going as a heritage event.
Kumbh Mela, twelve year cycle, the largest religious gathering in the world
The Kumbh Mela rotates between Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik on a twelve year cycle, with smaller Ardha Kumbh editions roughly every six years. The 2025 Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj from 13 January to 26 February drew more than 660 million pilgrims, making it the biggest gathering in recorded human history. The next full Kumbh at Prayagraj falls in 2037. The bathing site sits at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. UNESCO inscribed Kumbh Mela on the ICH list in 2017.
Goa Carnival, February, three days of Portuguese heritage
Festa do Carnival, the Goa Carnival, runs three days in February before Lent and reflects Portuguese Catholic heritage from the 1510 to 1961 era when Goa was a Portuguese colony. King Momo leads the opening procession through Panaji, with floats moving on to Margao, Vasco and Mapusa. About 25 percent of Goa identifies as Catholic, and the Susegad easy going attitude shapes the Mardi Gras style energy. I treat it as a beach plus carnival weekend rather than a religious event.
Eid ul Fitr, Muslim Islamic festival, April after Ramzan
Eid ul Fitr closes thirty days of Ramzan fasting and usually falls in April for the next few years on the Gregorian calendar. Friends greet each other with Eid Mubarak. Jama Masjid in Old Delhi, with a courtyard capacity near 25,000 worshippers, hosts one of the most photographed Eid prayers in the country. India's Muslim population of about 14 percent makes it a major minority festival, with strong gatherings in Hyderabad, Lucknow, Bhopal, Srinagar and Mumbai.
Festival Cost Table INR and USD
| Category | INR per night | USD per night | Notes |

| Budget guesthouse, peak festival | 2,000 to 8,000 | 25 to 100 | Book six to twelve months out |
| Mid range hotel, peak festival | 6,000 to 25,000 | 75 to 300 | Festival cities surcharge |
| Luxury heritage, peak festival | 16,000 to 65,000 | 200 to 800 | Mysore Palace area, Kolkata Park Street |
| Festival photography pass | Free | Free | Pandal viewing free, sanctum prohibited |
| Curated festival package | 40,000 to 250,000 | 500 to 3,000 | Six to twelve nights, transfers, guide |
| Inter festival travel | 2,500 to 12,000 per day | 30 to 150 per day | Trains, flights, meals |
| Kumbh Mela tent city | 8,000 to 80,000 | 100 to 1,000 | 2025 rates, book twelve to eighteen months out |
The peak festivals require six to eighteen months of advance booking. Kumbh Mela demands the longest lead time. The Maha Kumbh of 2025 in Prayagraj generated more than 660 million pilgrim visits across about six weeks, the largest religious gathering in recorded history, and the next Prayagraj edition is in 2037. Diwali alone is estimated to power more than one billion US dollars in retail and travel turnover.
Planning Notes Six Paragraphs
The best window for inbound festival travel runs October through March, with daytime temperatures across most of the country sitting between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius. Diwali in October to November, Durga Puja in October, Dussehra at Mysore in October, Pongal across 14 to 17 January, Goa Carnival in February, Holi in March, Bihu on 14 to 15 April and Onam across August to September all sit inside or close to this band. The 2025 Maha Kumbh is finished, so the next full Prayagraj Kumbh is the 2037 edition.
Foreign visitors need an e Visa at around 25 US dollars for 60 days, or a regular tourist visa from the nearest mission. Indian passport holders move freely. I file a Family Tourism visa for relatives joining from abroad. For peak festivals in Kolkata, Madurai, Guwahati, Kochi and the Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore triangle, I book accommodation six to eighteen months ahead. Kumbh Mela needs twelve to eighteen months for tents at the Sangam.
Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa Air cover Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin and Hyderabad. I book peak festival weekends six to twelve months in advance. On the ground, Vande Bharat semi high speed trains link most festival cities, the Yamuna Expressway covers the 165 kilometre Delhi to Agra run in about two hours, and the KMP Western Peripheral Expressway skirts Delhi traffic toward Mathura. The Mumbai to Goa coastal corridor, the Kolkata to Delhi Rajdhani route and the Chennai to Bangalore line all run reliably during festival peaks.
The climate is continental, with summer highs above 45 degrees Celsius from April to June. Monsoon runs July through September. Winter from October through March is the ideal festival season, although Delhi, Punjab and Haryana suffer post Diwali smog from November through January and I carry N95 masks. Northeast India around Bihu in April is humid and warm.
Festival dress matters more than guidebooks admit. I rotate saree, lehenga, sherwani or kurta and dhoti by region. White cotton old clothes are required for Holi. Onam calls for a Kerala mundu, Bihu for an Assamese gamosa, Pongal for simple Tamil wear, Mysore Dussehra for royal style attire. Christmas favours neat Western wear, Eid clean modest cuts. Photography inside pandals and at outdoor processions is generally free, but every sanctum I have visited prohibits cameras.
8 FAQs
How fast does the e Visa process for Indian festival trips?
The standard tourist e Visa for 60 days at around 25 US dollars usually clears in three to five business days. I apply at least three weeks before peak festivals. Indians need no visa. A Family Tourism visa is the right path for non resident relatives. For Kumbh Mela 2037 I will start paperwork at least six months ahead.
How do ATMs, cards and the festival economy work?
ATMs are widely available in festival cities and dispense Indian Rupees. USD exchange counters operate in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai airports. UPI is the default for street vendors. Diwali alone is estimated to drive more than one billion US dollars in festival economy turnover.
Where can I buy alcohol during the festivals?
Goa Carnival has the most permissive licensing, with bars and restaurants serving openly. The Bihu Mela in Assam features local rice based beverages in licensed venues. Mysore Dussehra has licensed outlets. Dry Hindu pilgrim cities such as Mathura, Vrindavan and Tirumala enforce alcohol bans, and I respect those rules.
What about vegetarian and special dietary food?
India is the easiest country in the world for vegetarians. Kerala's Onasadya is a 26 dish vegetarian feast on a banana leaf during Onam. Diwali sweets, Holi gujiyas, Durga Puja Bengali mishti doi, Pongal Tamil meals and Bihu Assamese fish thalis cover every taste.
What is the dress code at temples and festival venues?
Festival traditional Indian wear is the safest choice. Saree, lehenga, sherwani, dhoti or kurta keep me out of trouble. Holi demands white cotton old clothes. Onam is paired with a Kerala mundu, Bihu with an Assamese gamosa, Pongal with Tamil veshti and Mysore Dussehra with royal heritage attire.
How does the Kumbh Mela cycle actually work?
Kumbh Mela rotates between Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik on a twelve year cycle, with smaller Ardha Kumbh editions every six years. The 2025 Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj from 13 January to 26 February drew more than 660 million pilgrims and is the largest religious gathering in recorded human history. The next full Prayagraj Kumbh is in 2037. The Sangam Triveni at the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati confluence is the central bathing point.
Why is Durga Puja in Kolkata so special?
Durga Puja received UNESCO ICH status in 2021. Kolkata in October hosts a four day public viewing window inside the wider ten day Mahishasura Mardini story. Bengal builds more than 4,000 pandals. Vijaya Dashami immersion in the Hooghly closes the festival. Book Kolkata accommodation six months out. Festival photographers charge between 5,000 and 50,000 US dollars for full wedding style coverage.
How do I greet people respectfully across communities?
I greet with Namaste or Namaskar to elders, Salaam Alaikum to Muslim friends, Sat Sri Akal to Sikh hosts and Merry Christmas to Christian neighbours. During festivals I match the calendar: Diwali Mubarak, Holi Hai, Subho Bijoya, Pongal Vazhthukkal, Bohag Bihu Mubarak, Onam Aashamsakal, Happy Dussehra and Eid Mubarak.

Cultural Notes
India's fifty plus major festivals every year sit on top of 22 official languages and 1.4 billion residents. The eight UNESCO ICH inscriptions, Yoga 2016, Norouz 2009, Kalbeliya 2010, Lavani 2010, Garba 2023, Bihu 2024, Durga Puja 2021 and Sankirtana 2013, plus Kumbh Mela 2017, frame the festival map I use. Mughal, Iranian and British layers added language, food and architectural mixing that still shapes how I shop and eat during any festival week.
Diwali is the largest pan India Hindu festival. The five day Kartik sequence honours Krishna in some regions, Goddess Lakshmi nearly everywhere, and Lord Rama at Ayodhya. The Ram Mandir Deepotsav lit 28 million oil lamps in 2024, a Guinness record. Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon and Gokul together form the Brij Bhumi 84 kos Parikrama, a 252 kilometre seven day pilgrimage that doubles as a Diwali and Holi heritage corridor.
Holi stages the Krishna and Radha play wash story across four days at Barsana and Nandgaon. Wider Mathura, Vrindavan and Govardhan celebrations stretch close to a week. Bhang lassi is the local drink, and the full Phalguni Purnima March moon anchors the dates. Holi honours Lord Krishna as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Durga Puja in Kolkata is more than a religious event, it is a public art biennale that resets every year. Bengal builds over 4,000 pandals. The Bengal Renaissance shaped the aesthetic. Vijaya Dashami immersions close the four day public window inside the wider ten day Goddess Durga story. Diaspora celebrations in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad give a backup if Kolkata flights sell out.
Pongal in Tamil Nadu, 14 to 17 January, runs Bhogi, Surya Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kanu Pongal. The Sun God and Lord Indra sit at the centre, with Sangam era roots reaching back 2,000 years. Bihu in Assam covers Bohag Bihu on 14 to 15 April, Magh Bihu in January and Kati Bihu in October, with Bhupen Hazarika's songs as the soundtrack.
Onam in Kerala stretches ten days from Atham to Thiruvonam, with the Onasadya 26 dish thali, Pulikali tiger dance and the Vallam Kali snake boat race on Punnamada Lake including the Nehru Trophy. Dussehra at Mysore Palace lights 100,000 bulbs for ten days, with the Jamboo Savari elephant procession on Vijayadashami, a template set by the Wodeyar Dynasty from 1399 to 1947.
Kumbh Mela is the largest religious gathering on the planet. The 2025 Prayagraj edition crossed 660 million pilgrims between 13 January and 26 February, and the next full Prayagraj cycle is 2037. The Triveni Sangam at the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati confluence is the bathing point. Goa Carnival in February sits at the opposite spiritual pole, a three day Portuguese Catholic heritage event with King Momo's procession through Panaji, Margao, Vasco and Mapusa, anchored in the 1510 to 1961 colonial layer and the Susegad easy going culture.
Pre Trip Checklist
I keep an e Visa or Indian passport, a Family Tourism visa where needed, INR cash plus a small USD reserve, six to eighteen months of advance hotel booking for peak festivals, twelve to eighteen months of advance booking for Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, six months for Durga Puja in Kolkata and Universal Type C, D and M power adapters for the 230 volt Indian supply.
For dress code I pack a saree or lehenga and a sherwani or kurta dhoti, old white cotton clothes for Holi, a Kerala mundu for Onam, an Assamese gamosa for Bihu, simple Tamil wear for Pongal, royal heritage style attire for Mysore Dussehra and clean modest cuts for Christmas, Eid Mubarak and Diwali functions.
I plan around the monsoon between July and September, target the ideal festival window of October to March and carry an N95 mask for post Diwali smog from November through January in Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. I drink only bottled or filtered water.
Festival photography is generally free, but professional festival photographers in Kolkata, Mysore and Mumbai charge between 5,000 and 50,000 US dollars for full wedding style coverage. Drone permission needs central or state clearance well in advance.
For alcohol I rely on Goa Carnival licensed bars, the Bihu Mela's local Assamese drinks, licensed outlets in Mysore during Dussehra and licensed restaurants in big cities. I treat Mathura, Vrindavan and Tirumala as dry pilgrim zones and follow the rule without complaint.
