India Heritage Railways and Toy Trains: Darjeeling, Shimla, Nilgiri, Konkan and Vande Bharat Complete Guide 2026
Browse more guides: India travel | Asia destinations
TL;DR
I have ridden India's three UNESCO Mountain Railways, the Konkan Railway from Mumbai to Mangalore, and several Vande Bharat semi-high-speed routes. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (UNESCO 1999, 88km, 1881) climbs to Ghum at 2,257m. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (UNESCO 2005, 46km) uses a Swiss rack-and-pinion section. The Kalka-Shimla Railway (UNESCO 2008, 96km) threads 102 tunnels. Plan around weather, book IRCTC up to four months out, and pace yourself.
Why Visit India Railways in 2026
India runs the fourth-largest railway network in the world after the USA, Russia and China. The system carries about 23 million passengers across roughly 13,000 passenger trains every day on 68,000km of track, with 22,500-plus trains and 8,300-plus stations under the Indian Railways Ministry that was set up in 1947. About 1.4 million people work for Indian Railways, making it the single largest employer in India and the eighth-largest in the world.
For me, the reason to plan a trip around the rails in 2026 is that you can combine three UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India (inscribed in 1999, 2005 and 2008) with the Konkan Railway from 1998 and the new Vande Bharat semi-high-speed services running since 2019. Add the Maharaja Express, Palace on Wheels and Deccan Odyssey luxury services to the mix and you can build a 5-day, 8-day or 12-day plan that touches forests, deserts, tea estates, beaches and Himalayan ridges without ever spending long hours on a road.
IRCTC, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation founded in 2001, sells almost all of these tickets online. Foreigners can pair a 60-day e-visa for around USD 25 with the same booking system that locals use, so a self-built rail trip is more practical than it has been at any point in the last decade.
Background
The first commercial railway in India ran between Mumbai (then Bombay) and Thane, a 21-mile route opened on 16 April 1853. That single line grew into Great Indian Peninsular Railway and eventually into the Indian Railways Ministry, reorganised in 1951 into a zonal system that now counts 17 zones and 67 divisions.
Three Mountain Railways of India sit on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was inscribed in 1999, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway in 2005 and the Kalka-Shimla Railway in 2008. Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai, designed by Frederick William Stevens and opened in 1887, was inscribed separately in 2004. The Konkan Railway, completed in 1998 across 760km between Mumbai and Mangalore, is considered the biggest railway engineering project of post-Independence India.
The Vande Bharat Express, originally branded Train 18, started service in 2019 from the Integral Coach Factory at Chennai (Madras). It is a Made-in-India semi-high-speed train rated for 130km/h, and more than 75 Vande Bharat services were running by 2024 across long city pairs like New Delhi-Varanasi (about 11 hours), New Delhi-Howrah (about 17 hours) and New Delhi-Amritsar (about 6 hours).
English is universally used on rail signage along with Hindi and the relevant regional language from India's 22 scheduled tongues. The currency is the Indian rupee (INR) and the country sits on a single time zone, IST (UTC+5:30). The historical layers across the network run from late Mughal infrastructure into the British Raj era from 1858 to 1947 and on through the post-Independence build-out, including 1908 industrial cross-links like Tata Steel at Jamshedpur.
Five Tier-1 Rail Experiences
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (UNESCO 1999)
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is the original. Franklin Prestage's narrow-gauge 2-foot line opened in 1881 after surveys from 1879, climbing 88km from the plains to Darjeeling at 2,134m. The Toy Train, as everyone calls it, still uses heritage steam locomotives on certain joy-ride services along with diesel haulage on longer New Jalpaiguri (NJP) workings. I have done the 4 to 5-hour Darjeeling to Ghum loop several times, and the 100-plus bridges, the Batasia Loop and the Tindharia loop never feel routine.
Ghum station, at 2,257m, is the highest railway station in India. From Darjeeling I usually walk Mall Road, take a 4am car to Tiger Hill at 2,590m for the Kanchenjunga (8,586m) sunrise, and visit two or three of the 87 working tea estates that together produce roughly 8.5 million kg of tea a year.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway (UNESCO 2005)
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs 46km between Mettupalayam in the plains and Ooty (Udhagamandalam) at 2,240m via Coonoor. Built between 1899 and inaugurated in 1908, it is the only line in India to use a Swiss-pattern Abt rack-and-pinion system on the steep central section. The train crawls along at about 16km/h, which gives you a long, slow look at the Western Ghats forest.
From Ooty I have climbed Doddabetta (2,637m), the highest point in the Nilgiri Hills, and visited tea estates dating back to plantings around 1832. The Heritage status applies to the Tamil Nadu mountain section under the UNESCO 2005 extension of the Mountain Railways of India serial property.
Kalka-Shimla Railway (UNESCO 2008)
The Kalka-Shimla Railway covers 96km, was completed in 1903, and was inscribed by UNESCO in 2008. It threads 102 tunnels (with Barog tunnel at 1.144km the longest) and roughly 1,073 bridges. I rode the Shivalik Deluxe Express, which covers Kalka to Shimla in around 5 hours, for about 300 INR in heritage class. There are several other heritage trains on the line including the Himalayan Queen.
Shimla itself sits between 2,100m and 2,455m and rewards walking. I always make time for Christ Church (1857), Viceregal Lodge (1888), a steep hike to Jakhoo Temple at 2,455m and a coffee at Cool Cottage off Mall Road.
Konkan Railway
The Konkan Railway was finished in 1998 and stretches 760km from Roha (south of Mumbai) to Mangalore through Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. It has 92 tunnels and around 2,000 bridges, including the 6.5km Karbude tunnel, which was the longest in India when it opened. The line crosses Western Ghats sections inscribed by UNESCO in 2012.
I have ridden Mumbai to Madgaon (Goa) on a daytime Vande Bharat service that now does the run in about 8 hours, and the longer 12-hour Madgaon to Mangalore section in monsoon (July to September) on a regular express. Monsoon is the most scenic time, with waterfalls everywhere and green hills, but landslip risk is real and you should check for cancellations.
Vande Bharat Express
Vande Bharat is the semi-high-speed face of modern Indian Railways. Production runs out of the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, and by 2024 more than 75 Vande Bharat services were running. Max speed is 130km/h in service. I have used Vande Bharat for New Delhi to Varanasi (about 11 hours), New Delhi to Amritsar (about 6 hours), and parts of the New Delhi to Howrah run (about 17 hours with intermediate stops). It is fully Made in India under the Indian Railways production push.
Five Tier-2 Rail Experiences
Maharaja Express, Palace on Wheels and Deccan Odyssey
For luxury rail, IRCTC runs the Maharaja Express, usually a 7-night itinerary across north India at around USD 5,000 to USD 15,000 per person depending on cabin. Palace on Wheels covers Rajasthan over 7 nights for around USD 5,000 to USD 10,000. Deccan Odyssey runs 7-night Maharashtra and west-coast loops for around USD 4,000 to USD 8,000. Indian royal heritage trains as a category sit in the USD 5,000 to USD 15,000 band for 7-day trips, and onboard wedding photographers can charge USD 5,000 to USD 50,000 for these services.
Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai
Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), inscribed by UNESCO in 2004, is a Victorian Gothic building from 1887 designed by Frederick William Stevens. About 3 million daily commuters pass through it. This is also the historical end point of the 1853 Great Indian Peninsular Railway, which I think of as the symbolic kilometre zero of Indian rail.
Indian Coffee House and railway food culture
The Indian Coffee House cooperative society was founded in 1942 and now runs 400-plus outlets across the country, many of them near big stations. On board, IRCTC pantry cars and platform refreshment rooms keep simple meals at 50 to 300 INR. For a deeper food layer, Saravana Bhavan (founded 1981) now has 350-plus outlets worldwide, useful at southern terminals.
Mumbai suburban network
The Mumbai suburban (local) network moves around 7.5 million passengers a day across the Western, Central and Harbour lines. It is the busiest commuter rail network in the world. I avoid peak hours but a 30-minute ride between Churchgate and Bandra in the late morning is a useful slice of how India actually uses its 1853-rooted railway.
Indian Railways institutional layer
The Indian Railways Ministry was set up in 1947. The current 17-zone structure dates from a 1951 reorganisation and supports 67 divisions. IRCTC was founded in 2001 to handle catering, ticketing and tourism. The Vande Bharat programme that began in 2019 sits inside this same institutional ecosystem and confirms India's place as the fourth-largest railway network in the world.

| e-visa India, 60 days | about 2,000 | about 25 |
Booking is through IRCTC online or via agents. Premium Tatkal opens advance windows tighter to date; the standard advance booking window opens 120 days (4 months) before departure for general classes, and 6 to 12 months out for the luxury trains.
Planning (6 Paragraphs)
The best overall window for Indian rail travel is October to March, when most of the country sits between roughly 10 and 25 degrees Celsius. Monsoon from July to September is peak for the Konkan Railway because the Western Ghats waterfalls come alive, but landslip and slow running are part of the deal. Summer from April to June can push past 45 degrees in the plains; I avoid it for long-distance rides. Winter December to January adds smog in Delhi and the Gangetic plain, so I carry an N95 mask. For the Toy Trains specifically, Darjeeling reads best in April to June and September to November, Nilgiri runs best October to May, and Kalka-Shimla is at its peak March to June and September to November. Vande Bharat is comfortable year-round because the coaches are fully air-conditioned.
On paperwork, I use the Indian e-visa at about USD 25 for 60 days. Indian and OCI passport holders are visa-free for entry. IRCTC online handles ticketing, with the general advance window at 120 days (4 months) and Premium Tatkal opening one day before for time-critical seats. For Maharaja Express, Palace on Wheels and Deccan Odyssey, I book 6 to 12 months ahead; even Vande Bharat business class can sell out a week or two before departure on popular pairs.
For flights, Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet cover the domestic legs. The five or six core airports that pair well with the heritage rail trips are Bagdogra (for Darjeeling, about 4 hours by road to NJP and on to the toy train), Coimbatore CJB (for the Nilgiri line, about 3 hours by road to Mettupalayam), Chandigarh or Delhi (with a 5 to 6-hour drive or train to Kalka and onward to Shimla), Mumbai BOM (for the Konkan hub), and Madgaon (Goa) or Mangalore MAJ for the southern end. Vande Bharat connects New Delhi to Howrah over about 17 hours and is a useful long anchor.
Internally, I treat Vande Bharat (75-plus services in 2024) as the spine for plains travel, slot in the three UNESCO Toy Trains for the hill sections (Darjeeling, Nilgiri, Kalka-Shimla), drop in the Konkan Railway for the Mumbai to Madgaon and Madgaon to Mangalore coast, and add a Maharaja Express, Palace on Wheels or Deccan Odyssey segment if the budget allows. IRCTC online holds all of these inside a single account, against the larger frame of Indian Railways' 67 divisions and 17 zones.
Climate-wise, India runs continental in the north (summer above 45 degrees, monsoon July to September, winter 5 to 20 degrees) and tropical in the south. The Darjeeling Toy Train peaks April to June and September to November, Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs best October to May, Kalka-Shimla peaks March to June and September to November, and Delhi smog from November to January is genuinely heavy on the AQI; an N95 is sensible.
For dress, I pack smart-casual as default. Vande Bharat business class tends to lean a bit formal. Maharaja Express, Palace on Wheels and Deccan Odyssey have dinner dress codes that lean to smart formal. Toy Train rides on the mountain lines are fully casual. Heritage 1st-AC compartments lean smart. Photography is broadly free on heritage Toy Train steam services, but reserved photo packages on luxury trains can be quoted separately.
Eight FAQs
Visa and entry. Indian e-visa runs about USD 25 for 60 days and is granted in a few business days. Indian and OCI passport holders are visa-free. IRCTC online handles ticketing for all classes. Premium Tatkal opens 1 day before travel; the general advance window is 4 months. Maharaja Express and Palace on Wheels usually need 6 to 12 months. India's network remains the fourth-largest in the world, with 1.4 million Indian Railways staff making it the largest employer in India and the eighth-largest in the world.
Money and payments. ATMs across INR are widely available; my IRCTC online payments work on most international Visa and Mastercard. USD changers operate at airports and big-city hubs, and cash advance fees on foreign cards can run 2 to 4 percent.
Alcohol on board and at destinations. Delhi is licensed, Mumbai and Goa and most of Karnataka are licensed, and Bihar has been a dry state since April 2016. Gujarat needs a tourist liquor permit. Jungle camps near reserves run licensed bars. Maharaja Express, Palace on Wheels and Deccan Odyssey carry licensed onboard bars in 1st-class service. Heritage Toy Train rides do not serve alcohol.
Food on the rails. Indian rail dining is broad: South Indian dosa, idli and sambar in the south; North Indian Mughlai and Punjabi in the Delhi belt; Bengali sweets across the eastern stretch; Bihari litti chokha in the central plains; UP Awadhi closer to Lucknow. The Indian Coffee House (founded 1942) runs 400-plus outlets in many languages. Saravana Bhavan (founded 1981) has 350-plus outlets worldwide. IRCTC pantry cars and station refreshment rooms keep simple meals at 50 to 300 INR.
Dress codes and photography. I treat default dress as smart-casual; Vande Bharat business class leans formal, the three luxury trains have dinner dress codes, the Toy Trains are casual, and 1st-AC compartments lean smart. Photography is free on heritage steam Toy Train services. Reserved photo and video packages on Maharaja Express and Palace on Wheels can be billed separately.
Toy Train logistics. The three UNESCO Mountain Railways are Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (UNESCO 1999, 88km, 1881), Nilgiri Mountain Railway (UNESCO 2005, 46km, 1899 to 1908) and Kalka-Shimla Railway (UNESCO 2008, 96km, 1903). Book on IRCTC up to 4 months out. AC 1st-class on the heritage sections runs 300 to 1,000 INR. Heritage steam and diesel joy rides run 4 to 5 hours on the Darjeeling to Ghum to Kurseong to NJP corridor.
Luxury rail logistics. Maharaja Express (7-night IRCTC tourism product), Palace on Wheels (Rajasthan 7-night) and Deccan Odyssey (Maharashtra 7-night) sit in the USD 5,000 to USD 15,000, USD 5,000 to USD 10,000 and USD 4,000 to USD 8,000 bands respectively. Indian royal heritage trains as a class run USD 5,000 to USD 15,000 for 7-day product. Onboard wedding photography packages run USD 5,000 to USD 50,000. Advance booking 6 to 12 months is normal.
Konkan Railway specifics. Konkan Railway is the 760km Mumbai to Mangalore line, opened 1998. It carries 92 tunnels and about 2,000 bridges including the 6.5km Karbude tunnel. Madgaon (Goa) to Mangalore takes about 12 hours on a regular express. A daily Vande Bharat now covers Mumbai to Madgaon. Monsoon (July to September) is the most scenic window across the Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala coastal stretch in and around the Western Ghats UNESCO area inscribed in 2012.

Cultural Notes
Indian Railways is the fourth-largest railway network in the world after the USA, Russia and China, with about 68,000km of track, 22,500-plus trains and 8,300-plus stations supporting around 13,000 passenger trains and 23 million passengers daily. The first commercial line ran Mumbai to Thane (21 miles) on 16 April 1853; Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus opened in 1887 and was inscribed by UNESCO in 2004; Tata Steel set up Jamshedpur in 1908 across the same rail era. The three Mountain Railways of India (UNESCO 1999, 2005 and 2008) gather Darjeeling, Nilgiri and Kalka-Shimla into one serial property. The Konkan Railway from 1998 (760km Mumbai to Mangalore) and Vande Bharat from 2019 (Train 18) mark the modern engineering peaks. The Indian Railways Ministry was set up in 1947; 1.4 million staff make it India's biggest employer and the 8th largest in the world. IRCTC, founded in 2001, runs tickets, catering and tourism.
On the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Franklin Prestage's 88km 2-foot narrow-gauge line from 1879 to 1881 climbs to 2,134m at Darjeeling, with Ghum at 2,257m the highest railway station in India. There are over 100 bridges, plus the Batasia Loop and Tindharia loop, and Toy Train heritage steam and diesel joy rides run 4 to 5 hours along Darjeeling to Ghum to Kurseong to NJP. Around 87 tea estates in the area produce about 8.5 million kg of tea each year.
On the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the 46km Mettupalayam to Coonoor to Ooty line was built between 1899 and inaugurated in 1908 using a Swiss-pattern rack-and-pinion section, running at about 16km/h with Ooty at 2,240m and Doddabetta at 2,637m. The first plantings around the Tea Museum site date to about 1832. The Tamil Nadu Mountain Railway heritage adds depth to a southern leg.
On the Kalka-Shimla Railway, the 96km line from 1903 includes 102 tunnels (Barog at 1.144km is the longest) and around 1,073 bridges. The Shivalik Deluxe Express covers Kalka to Shimla in about 5 hours for around 300 INR. Christ Church (1857), Viceregal Lodge (1888) and Jakhoo Temple at 2,455m are the obvious extras.
On the Konkan Railway, the 760km 1998 corridor from Mumbai to Mangalore has 92 tunnels, about 2,000 bridges and the 6.5km Karbude tunnel as its longest, with Madgaon to Mangalore taking about 12 hours. Mumbai to Madgaon is now a daily Vande Bharat service. Monsoon coastal scenery across the Western Ghats UNESCO 2012 area is the highlight.
On the Vande Bharat Express, the Train 18 design from 2019 is fully Made in India, max 130km/h, with 75-plus services by 2024 across long city pairs. The Indian Railways Production Unit at Chennai (Madras) Integral Coach Factory builds the rakes. Routes I have used include New Delhi to Varanasi (about 11 hours), New Delhi to Howrah (about 17 hours including stops) and New Delhi to Amritsar (about 6 hours).
On the luxury circuit, Maharaja Express (7-night IRCTC product), Palace on Wheels (Rajasthan, 7-night) and Deccan Odyssey (Maharashtra, 7-night) run in USD 5,000 to USD 15,000, USD 5,000 to USD 10,000 and USD 4,000 to USD 8,000 bands. Onboard wedding photography packages can quote USD 5,000 to USD 50,000.
