India Honeymoon Destinations: Andaman, Kashmir, Kerala, Coorg, Goa, Udaipur, Darjeeling and Shimla Complete Guide 2026

TL;DR

India gives newly married couples eight headline honeymoon regions in one country. I plan trips around Andaman beaches, Kashmir houseboats, Kerala backwaters, Coorg coffee hills, Goa Indo-Portuguese coast, Udaipur royal lakes, Darjeeling tea slopes and Shimla colonial hill stations. Expect 4 to 7 day stays, USD 500 to USD 5,000 budgets, and an industry topping USD 5 billion with over 1 million Indian honeymoons every year.

Why Visit India Honeymoon Destinations 2026

I rate India as the most varied honeymoon country I have ever planned, and 2026 is a strong year to go. Andaman & Nicobar Havelock Radhanagar Beach was named Asia's best beach by TIME in 2004 and still rules barefoot luxury. Kashmir Srinagar Dal Lake offers shikara rides and houseboat sleeps. Kerala backwaters around Vembanad Lake at 2,033 km² are the country's calmest water honeymoon. Coorg in Karnataka grows 33% of India's coffee. Goa carries Indo-Portuguese history from 1510 to 1961. Udaipur's Lake Palace from 1746 is royal heritage at its purest. Darjeeling's Toy Train holds a UNESCO listing from 1999. Shimla served as British India's summer capital from 1864 to 1939.

The India honeymoon industry crossed USD 5 billion in 2024, with more than 1 million Indian honeymoons booked every year. Bollywood honeymoon culture popularized this circuit through celebrity couples, and the wider Indian wedding cycle of 3 to 7 day ceremonies, with Sangeet, Mehndi, Haldi and Pheras as pre-wedding rituals, feeds directly into post-wedding honeymoon culture. I see 250 to 2,000 guest weddings followed by quiet two-person retreats, and I think no other country gives couples this breadth.

Background

The Indian wedding industry sits around USD 50 billion across roughly 1.5 million weddings each year, and the honeymoon slice is growing about 12% annual. Heritage Hotels of India lists over 1,500 properties, many of them former royal residences now hosting couples. The Modi government's 2017 "Wed in India" campaign pushed domestic destinations hard, and 2017 onwards Bollywood films and celebrity coverage made Kerala backwaters the honeymoon capital of India while Andaman & Nicobar Havelock Radhanagar Beach rode its 2004 Asia best beach badge into Instagram fame.

There are eight pan-Indian honeymoon destinations I keep recommending: Andaman, Kashmir, Kerala, Coorg, Goa, Udaipur, Darjeeling and Shimla. Couples spend 4 to 7 days at each, and many split a fortnight across two regions. The model supports Indian royal heritage tourism, sustains the Indian cottage industry through curated craft buys, and works as dual tourism because both Indian domestic couples and international foreign visitors share the same circuit. Indian royal heritage stays anchor about half of premium bookings I plan.

Five Tier-1 Destinations

Andaman & Nicobar Havelock Swaraj Island

I send beach-first couples to Havelock, now officially Swaraj Island. Radhanagar Beach runs about 2 km of white sand, TIME ranked it Asia's best beach in 2004, and Elephant Beach is the snorkel spot. Kalapathar Beach gives the sunrise view. Aquatica with Mike and Madhumati handles scuba for first timers. The 2018 six-month rehabilitation closure protected the reef, and the marine ecology is in better shape because of it. Cellular Jail in Port Blair is a dignified historic add. Honeymoon cocktail couples favour Taj Exotica Havelock, Munjoh, Niraamaya and Barefoot, with rates from USD 250 to USD 1,500 per night.

Kashmir Srinagar Dal Lake

Kashmir is my houseboat pick. Dal Lake covers 22 km² with shikara boat rides, and the 1,400+ houseboats are converted barges from British colonial heritage and Maharaja designs of the 1880s. Floating vegetable gardens drift between mooring lines at sunrise. The Mughal gardens reading list runs Shalimar Bagh 1619, Nishat Bagh 1633, Chashme Shahi 1632 and Pari Mahal 1650. Gulmarg at 2,650 m runs the Gondola, a 5 km lift to 3,950 m and the world's second highest cable car. After the August 5 2019 Article 370 abrogation J&K became a Union Territory under direct rule, and I tell couples plainly: book with a known agent, follow advisories, and the experience is calm and welcoming.

Kerala Backwaters

Kerala backwaters are the slow honeymoon. Vembanad Lake at 2,033 km² is India's largest lake, Punnamada Lake holds the snake boat race route, and over 1,500 houseboats, the Kettuvallam with its curved bamboo roof, are a craft you find nowhere else. I add Munnar at 1,500 to 1,800 m for Tata tea plantations, Periyar Tiger Reserve at 925 km² in the Cardamom Hills, and Wayanad in the Western Ghats which got UNESCO listing in 2012. My hotel shortlist runs Niraamaya Surya Samudra Kovalam, Brunton Boatyard Kochi, Kumarakom Lake Resort and Vythiri Resort Wayanad, at USD 200 to USD 1,500 per night.

Coorg Kodagu Karnataka

Coorg, the Kodagu district of Karnataka, grows about 33% of India's coffee. Madikeri sits at 1,170 m. Abbey Falls, Raja's Seat at sunset, Talacauvery at 1,341 m as the Cauvery River source, and Dubare elephant camp fill a four-day couples loop. Vivanta Coorg and Tata Coffee Plantation properties anchor the high end at USD 150 to USD 1,000 per night. I often pair Coorg with Wayanad in Kerala, since the Western Ghats run continuously across both states and the drive is short.

Goa Indo-Portuguese Coast

Goa carries Portuguese rule from 1510 to 1961 in its architecture, food and language. Cidade de Goa Vivanta, Park Hyatt Goa Resort, Taj Holiday Village, ITC Grand Goa and Goa Marriott give five-star choice. The 8 km Calangute, Baga and Anjuna beach strip is the social run, and Old Goa was UNESCO listed in 1986 for its churches and convents. The Mandovi River cruises and the Goan susegad easy-going pace work for couples. Goa is about 25% Christian, which shapes the cuisine and the wedding crossovers. Rooms run USD 150 to USD 800 per night.

Five Tier-2 Destinations

Udaipur Rajasthan

Udaipur is my royal heritage pick. Lake Pichola measures roughly 4 km by 3 km and was completed in 1362. Lake Palace dates to 1746 and was built by Maharana Jagat Singh II. Jagmandir Island goes back to 1551, and Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace crowns the hills above the city. Couples often hold a wedding and then a honeymoon at the same property. Taj Lake Palace, Oberoi Udaivilas and Leela Palace run USD 250 to USD 2,000 per night. I think Udaipur is the strongest royal heritage Rajasthan honeymoon address.

Darjeeling West Bengal

Darjeeling sits at 2,134 m. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Toy Train, UNESCO listed in 1999, covers 88 km and opened in 1881. Tiger Hill at 2,590 m gives the Kanchenjunga 8,586 m sunrise view. The district holds 87 tea estates producing about 8.5 million kg per year. Mayfair Darjeeling and Glenburn Penthouse are my couples picks for Bollywood-style Bengal heritage with a clear Indian royal heritage thread.

Shimla Himachal Pradesh

Shimla at 2,200 m was British India's summer capital from 1864 to 1939. Mall Road is the walking spine, Christ Church dates to 1857, Viceregal Lodge to 1888. The Kalka-Shimla Railway, UNESCO listed in 2008, covers 96 km, opened in 1903, and runs through 102 tunnels and over 1,073 bridges. Wildflower Hall in Mashobra is the standout hotel. I think Shimla is the cleanest pan-Himachal heritage option with the British 1864 to 1939 summer capital storyline intact.

Auli Uttarakhand

Auli is my winter ski honeymoon pick. The Garhwal Himalaya resort sits at 2,500 m with a 1,150 m Olympic-grade descent. Trishul Mountain forms the backdrop, and the cable car runs 4 km, the world's second longest ropeway. December to March is peak. I pair Auli with a short Rishikesh stop for couples who want adventure inside a cross-Garhwal Uttarakhand honeymoon.

Lonavala Khandala Maharashtra

Lonavala and Khandala in the Western Ghats, UNESCO listed in 2012, sit at 624 m between Mumbai and Pune. Tiger Point is the viewpoint. The drive from Mumbai is about two hours. Rooms run USD 100 to USD 500 per night. I use Lonavala as a budget cross-Mumbai weekend honeymoon when full circuits are not in budget.

Cost Table (INR / USD)

Tier 7-day budget Property style
Budget USD 500 to USD 1,500 (INR 42K to INR 1.25L) Homestays, 3-star, Goa shacks
Mid USD 2,000 to USD 3,500 (INR 1.7L to INR 2.9L) Vivanta, Park Hyatt second tier
Royal heritage USD 1,000 to USD 5,000 (INR 84K to INR 4.2L) Heritage Hotels of India 1,500+ properties
Luxury USD 5,000 to USD 15,000 (INR 4.2L to INR 12.5L) Taj Lake Palace, Oberoi Udaivilas, Leela

Pan-Indian honeymoon heritage rates land at USD 250 to USD 2,000 per night across Vivanta, Taj, Oberoi, Leela and Park Hyatt. The wider industry sits at USD 5 billion in 2024 with 1 million plus Indian honeymoons per year.

Planning Section

Season. I rate October to March as the cool 10 to 25 degrees C window and the ideal pan-India honeymoon season. Winter December to February is peak for Andaman, Kashmir Gulmarg and Shimla snow. Summer April to May suits Auli skiing tail-end and Mughal Gardens bloom. Monsoon July to September is peak ayurveda season for Munnar, Wayanad and Periyar. April to June hits 45 degrees C in Goa and Udaipur, so I avoid those then. For royal heritage stays I book 6 to 12 months ahead.

Visa. Indian e-visa runs USD 25 for 60 days for most foreigners; Indian passport holders need nothing internally. Andaman foreigners get a 30-day Restricted Area Permit free on arrival at Port Blair. Kashmir no longer needs an Inner Line Permit for Indians since August 2019. The visa runs under family tourism category, and the Wed in India campaign from 2017 simplified honeymoon arrivals.

Flights. Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Vistara and Akasa cover domestic. The eight honeymoon airports I work with are Port Blair IXZ for Andaman, Srinagar SXR for Kashmir, Cochin COK for Kerala, Bangalore or Mangalore for Coorg, Goa GOI, Udaipur UDR for Rajasthan, Bagdogra IXB for Darjeeling, and Chandigarh IXC for Shimla. Domestic legs run 1 to 3 hours, international 6 to 9 hours. Book heritage hotels and flights 6 to 12 months early.

Internal travel. Vande Bharat trains, the 165 km Yamuna Expressway Delhi to Agra in two hours, the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and the KMP Western Peripheral Expressway take care of north India ground transfer. The Maharaja Express, Palace on Wheels and Deccan Odyssey luxury seven-night trains are themed royal heritage circuits. The Indian Coffee House chain, founded 1942, gives reliable multilingual food stops pan-India.

Climate. Continental: hot summer 45 degrees C plus April to June, monsoon July to September, cold winter 5 to 20 degrees C December to January, and smog AQI risk November to January in Delhi. Andaman is dry October to May. Kashmir is best April to October. Kerala backwaters work year-round. Coorg, Goa and Udaipur are at their best October to March.

Dress. Smart-casual works almost everywhere. Traditional Indian dress, the Saree, Lehenga, Sherwani or Bandhgala, comes out for Sangeet, Mehndi, Haldi and Pheras pre-wedding ritual photography. Bollywood post-wedding honeymoon casual is fine. Royal heritage weddings push formal. For photography I bring at least one outfit that respects Indian heritage and one Royal Heritage Rajasthan Bollywood themed set.

Cultural Notes

The Indian wedding economy at roughly USD 50 billion is huge, and the honeymoon slice at USD 5 billion plus runs about 1 million Indian honeymoons annual. Bollywood honeymoon culture popularized this circuit through celebrity couples, and a typical Indian wedding stretches across 3 to 7 day ceremonies covering Sangeet, Mehndi, Haldi and Pheras as pre-wedding ritual sequence. Guest counts run 250 to 2,000 people, and the post-wedding honeymoon culture is now standard. Heritage Hotels of India lists 1,500+ properties, the market grows about 12% annual, and Modi's 2017 "Wed in India" campaign moved bookings inward.

The eight pan-Indian honeymoon destinations I work with: Andaman, Kashmir, Kerala, Coorg, Goa, Udaipur, Darjeeling and Shimla. Couples stay 4 to 7 days at each. Indian royal heritage is one anchor; Indian cottage industry preservation through hand looms, copper, brass, silk and tea is another. The model is dual tourism, both domestic Indian and international foreign visitor, and the same circuit fits both.

Region specifics: Andaman & Nicobar Havelock Swaraj Island Radhanagar Beach 2 km Asia's best beach 2004; Kashmir Srinagar Dal Lake 22 km² with 1,400 plus houseboats and the Mughal Gardens of 1619, 1633, 1632 and 1650, plus the Gulmarg Gondola at 3,950 m; Kerala Vembanad 2,033 km² with 1,500 plus Kettuvallam houseboats; Coorg coffee at 33% of India's output; Goa Indo-Portuguese from 1510 to 1961 and around 25% Christian; Udaipur Lake Pichola 1362 and Lake Palace 1746; Darjeeling Toy Train UNESCO 1999 and 87 tea estates; Shimla 2,200 m and Kalka-Shimla Railway UNESCO 2008.
