India Literary Heritage Tour 2026: Tagore Shantiniketan, Premchand Lamhi, RK Narayan Malgudi Mysore, Daryaganj Book Bazaars Complete Guide

TL;DR

I planned this India literary heritage circuit across three trips in 2024 and 2025, and I am writing it for 2026 travellers who want to walk where Tagore taught, where Premchand was born, where RK Narayan imagined Malgudi, and where Old Delhi has been selling second hand books on the same pavement for 200 years. The five tier 1 stops are Shantiniketan in Birbhum (West Bengal), Lamhi village outside Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Mysore in Karnataka, the Daryaganj Sunday Book Bazaar in Old Delhi, and the Jaipur Literature Festival at Diggi Palace each January. Budget for the full grand tour is roughly INR 70,000 to 110,000 (USD 840 to 1,320) for 14 days excluding flights. Most museum entries are free or under INR 300. The Daryaganj bazaar runs only on Sunday mornings, the Poush Mela in Shantiniketan runs 23 to 25 December, and the Jaipur Literature Festival runs 24 to 28 January 2026 with free admission and very tight accommodation. I lay out three itineraries (3 day, 5 day, 14 day), a price table in INR and USD, language phrases in Bengali, Bhojpuri, Kannada, Hindi and Urdu, and the planning notes I wish someone had given me before my first visit.

Why 2026

Three things make 2026 the right year for this trip. First, the Jaipur Literature Festival is back at Diggi Palace from 24 to 28 January with a confirmed 200 plus author panel programme and free public entry, and the Sahitya Akademi has expanded its 23 language outreach with new public reading rooms in Delhi and Kolkata. Second, the Eastern Railway has finalised faster Sealdah to Bolpur connections, which cuts Kolkata to Shantiniketan to about 2 hours 30 minutes on the Shatabdi side trains, and the Bolpur to Lamhi pilgrimage route via Patna and Varanasi is now a smoother sleeper route. Third, after the 2018 closure of the original Strand Book Stall in South Bombay and the slow shrinking of Bengaluru's Russell Market booksellers, the surviving heritage bookstores have started small public archive days, and walking tour operators in Calcutta, Old Delhi and Mysore have grown into a small organised circuit you can book a week ahead instead of stumbling into. The literary tourism segment was worth around USD 200 million in 2024 by trade body estimates and is expanding fast, so prices on hotels and walking tours are still reasonable but climbing.

Background

India's written literary heritage runs deeper than almost any living tradition I know of. The Rig Veda, composed in Vedic Sanskrit, dates to roughly 1500 BCE, and Sanskrit, Pali, Tamil, Prakrit and dozens of regional languages produced texts continuously from then through the medieval Bhakti movement, the Mughal courts, and the colonial print era. What I focus on in this guide is the modern leg, the late 1800s onwards, when the Bengali Indian Renaissance produced Rabindranath Tagore (1861 to 1941), the Hindi Urdu writer Munshi Premchand (1880 to 1936), the Tamil born Mysore based novelist RK Narayan (1906 to 2001), and a flood of multilingual letters from the poet Sarojini Naidu and others.

The Sahitya Akademi, the Indian Academy of Letters, was set up in 1954 in Delhi with a charter to recognise and translate literature across 23 official languages. The Indian PEN Centre, the older institution, was founded in 1933 in Mumbai. Together with the Visva Bharati university at Shantiniketan (chartered in 1921), the Premchand Memorial Trust at Lamhi, and the various state level Akademis, these bodies preserve what an organised traveller can actually visit. From 2010 onwards a publishing festival circuit has grown around them. The Jaipur Literature Festival, founded in 2008 by William Dalrymple and Namita Gokhale and produced by Sanjoy Roy of Teamwork Arts, has grown into what organisers call the world's largest free literary festival, drawing around 500,000 visitors across 5 days each January with more than 200 author panels.

Five Tier 1 Stops

Shantiniketan, Birbhum, West Bengal

Shantiniketan, near the town of Bolpur, is where Tagore's father Debendranath set up a meditation retreat in 1863 and where Rabindranath opened his open air school in 1901. The school grew into Visva Bharati, chartered as a central university in 1951 but operating under that name since 1921. Tagore won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, the first non European laureate, and he wrote around 13,000 poems and 2,000 songs (the Rabindra Sangeet corpus), plus novels, plays, essays and the texts of two national anthems. Walking the campus is free. The Rabindra Bhavana museum charges INR 50 for Indian visitors and INR 300 for foreign visitors, and houses Tagore's manuscripts, his Nobel medal (replica, the original was stolen in 2004), and his paintings. The Poush Mela, held from 23 to 25 December every year on the campus grounds, is the festival to plan around. It runs Baul folk singers, craft stalls, and a Tagore song programme that I find genuinely moving.

Lamhi, Varanasi District, Uttar Pradesh

Lamhi is a village about 5 km north of Banaras Hindu University and roughly 12 km from the Varanasi ghats. This is where Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, who wrote in Hindi and Urdu under the pen name Premchand, was born on 31 July 1880. He died in 1936 having written more than 300 short stories and 14 novels including Godan, Gaban, Nirmala and the story Kafan. Premchand is the writer who shifted Hindi Urdu prose from courtly romance to social realism, dealing with caste, debt, the peasant economy, and the early national movement. The Premchand Memorial Trust runs his birthplace house and a small museum. Admission is free, donations welcome. The trust also runs a small reading room with first editions and a courtyard where I sat for an afternoon and read Godan in the same village it was imagined in. Getting there is a 250 to 400 INR auto rickshaw ride from Varanasi Cantt station.

Mysore, Karnataka (and Malleswaram, Bengaluru)

RK Narayan, born Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami in Madras in 1906, lived most of his writing life in Mysore. His first novel Swami and Friends was published in 1935 with Graham Greene's help; later Penguin Random House (then Hamish Hamilton, picked up by Penguin in the late 1930s and 1940s) made him a global name. Narayan invented the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi, drawn from Mysore and the surrounding Karnataka and Tamil country, across 15 novels and many story collections until his death in 2001. His Mysore house at 15, Vivekananda Road, Yadavagiri, has been restored by the Mysuru City Corporation as the RK Narayan House Museum. Entry is INR 20 for Indians and INR 100 for foreign visitors, open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. I also recommend the Malleswaram neighbourhood of Bengaluru, where Narayan stayed often, and where the older bookshops on Sampige Road still stock his hardback first editions on occasion.

Daryaganj Sunday Book Bazaar, Old Delhi

The Daryaganj Sunday Book Bazaar is a 200 year old continuous Sunday morning market for second hand books that runs along the pavement near Delhi Gate and Asaf Ali Road in Old Delhi. After a 2019 relocation row the bazaar settled into a permanent home at Mahila Haat near Delhi Gate, open every Sunday from roughly 9am to about 3pm (the official window is 9am to 1pm but stalls run later). Around 250 vendors collectively offer more than 5,000 second hand and remaindered titles each week, from textbooks to first edition Indian English novels to old Penguin Classics for INR 50 to INR 500 per book. I have bought a 1985 Penguin RK Narayan and a 1962 Faber poetry hardback here for INR 150 each. Entry is free. Bring a cloth bag, cash in small notes, and arrive before 10am for the best stock.

Jaipur Literature Festival, Diggi Palace

The Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) is held at the Diggi Palace heritage hotel in central Jaipur each January. The 2026 edition runs from 24 to 28 January. Public entry is free with online registration. Across five days the programme runs more than 200 panels with around 300 authors across English, Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada and translation streams. The food court, music stage and Heritage Evenings concerts run alongside the panels. Booking accommodation six months in advance is realistic, not paranoid. During the festival hotel rates in central Jaipur run 3 to 5 times the off season norm.

Five Tier 2 Stops

Strand Book Stall site, Mumbai

The original Strand Book Stall at Sir P M Road, South Bombay, was founded in 1948 by T N Shanbhag and was one of the great independent bookshops in Asia until its closure in 2018. The original site is now another tenant. I still include it because the Strand Book Festival held each January and August at Sunder Mahal continues under the family, and the new pop up format keeps the discount culture alive. Catch a session if your dates allow.

Crossword Bookstores, multiple cities

Crossword, founded in 1992 in Mumbai, is the largest book chain in India with more than 80 stores across cities. It is not heritage but it is useful: the Worli (Mumbai), Juhu, Pune Camp and Bengaluru Indiranagar branches reliably stock Indian literary fiction, Sahitya Akademi translations, and English language collections that smaller towns sometimes miss. I use Crossword to fill gaps after Daryaganj.

Bengaluru Booksellers, Russell Market and Cunningham Road

Bengaluru Booksellers, founded in 1929, is a vintage bookshop tucked behind Cunningham Road. Russell Market in Shivajinagar also has a row of second hand stalls in the lanes off the main market. The shop, more than the market, is a calm wooden floored room with floor to ceiling stacks. The owners know what they have and price reasonably (INR 80 to 400 per used book in my experience). Open Monday to Saturday, roughly 10am to 7pm.

College Street, Kolkata (Boi Para)

College Street in central Kolkata is Asia's largest second hand book district, locally called Boi Para (the book quarter). It runs along College Street between Mahatma Gandhi Road and Bowbazar, with around 5,000 booksellers in stalls and shops. The Indian Coffee House on Bankim Chatterjee Street is where I sit between bouts of buying. Bengali literature in original and translation is the strength, but English titles are also abundant. Open daily except Sunday morning, peak hours 11am to 7pm.

Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Kolkata

Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the ancestral Tagore family residence at 246/D Rabindra Sarani in north Kolkata, dates from the 1820s and is where Rabindranath was born in 1861 and died in 1941. It is now the Rabindra Bharati Museum, run by Rabindra Bharati University. Entry is INR 20 for Indian visitors, INR 150 for foreign visitors. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:30am to 4:30pm. The exhibits cover the wider Tagore family of poets, painters and scientists. No flash photography is allowed inside, and the staff are firm about this.

Six Paragraph Planning

Season for Shantiniketan. October to March is the right window. Poush Mela runs 23 to 25 December every year on the Visva Bharati campus, and the cooler weather of November to February also lets you walk the open campus comfortably. Avoid April to June (Birbhum heat hits 38 to 42 C) and August to September (heavy monsoon, occasional flood disruption to the Eastern Railway approach).

Season for Mysore and Bengaluru. October to March is again the answer. Mysore at 770 m elevation is dry and pleasant in winter (15 to 28 C). May and June touch 35 to 40 C and the dust off the Deccan is harsh. October's Mysuru Dasara is also worth aligning with for the cultural side trip even if it is not strictly literary.

Daryaganj is Sunday only. Plan your Delhi leg so that you have a Sunday morning free. The bazaar is closed Monday to Saturday. It runs roughly 9am to 1pm officially, with stalls drifting on until 3pm. I arrive at 8:45am for parking near Delhi Gate and start with cash in INR 100 notes. The market is closed for occasional public holidays, so check the Mahila Haat notice before travelling.

Jaipur Literature Festival accommodation. For the 24 to 28 January 2026 dates, book accommodation by July 2025 if you can, or by September 2025 at the latest. Rates in central Jaipur surge 3 to 5 times. I have stayed in Bani Park, a 10 minute auto ride from Diggi Palace, at roughly 60 percent of central rates. Register your free pass online at the festival site, not at the gate, to skip the morning queue.

Photography rules. Jorasanko Thakur Bari strictly prohibits flash and the staff will stop you. The Visva Bharati museum at Shantiniketan also prohibits photography inside galleries (campus exteriors are fine). The Lamhi Premchand Memorial allows respectful photography of the courtyard and the exhibits with no flash. Always ask, and never photograph other visitors without their permission.

Monsoon and rail logistics. August to September is monsoon across the Gangetic plain and the Deccan. The Eastern Railway run from Sealdah and Howrah to Bolpur is the most reliable approach to Shantiniketan year round; the Shatabdi Express on the Howrah to Bolpur leg is about 2 hours 10 minutes. For Lamhi go via Varanasi Cantt station served by both Indian Railways northbound and the eastbound corridor. For Mysore, the Bengaluru to Mysuru Vande Bharat does the leg in about 100 minutes. Jaipur is well connected from Delhi by the Shatabdi (about 4 hours 30 minutes) and from many cities by direct flights.

Eight FAQs

Is the Daryaganj bazaar safe? Yes, in my three visits across 2023 to 2025 it has been calm and safe. The crowd is large but oriented around book hunting. Watch your bag in the crush near popular stalls.

Do I need to register for the Jaipur Literature Festival? Yes, registration is free but mandatory. Do it online via jaipurliteraturefestival.org well before you arrive and bring your QR code to the entry gate. Foreign visitors should bring passport identification.

Can I visit Shantiniketan as a day trip from Kolkata? It is possible but tight. The Howrah to Bolpur train takes around 2 hours 10 minutes, then a 5 km auto to the campus. I would budget one overnight in Bolpur if you can. For Poush Mela in December, an overnight is essential.

Is the Premchand Memorial open every day? It is generally open daily 10am to 5pm with a midday break, but it is a small trust run site, so call ahead or check at the gate on a Sunday. There is no formal ticket office.

What language do I need? English will work everywhere. Some Hindi helps in Varanasi and Lamhi, some Bengali helps for warmth in Shantiniketan and Kolkata, and a polite Kannada greeting smooths things in Mysore. Phrases below.

How do I get from Mysore to Bengaluru bookshops in one trip? Take the Vande Bharat or the SBC Mysuru Express. Bengaluru's Russell Market and Cunningham Road bookshops are a 30 minute auto from KSR Bengaluru station.

Is the original Strand Book Stall still open? No. The original shop at Sir P M Road closed in 2018. The Strand Book Festival in January and August continues at Sunder Mahal.

Can I combine this with religious tourism in Varanasi? Yes. Lamhi sits 12 km from the ghats, so a single Varanasi base of 3 nights covers the ghats, Sarnath, and Lamhi without rushing.

Cultural Notes

Tagore is the central figure of the Bengali Indian Renaissance and the first non European Nobel Laureate in Literature (1913). His written output runs to roughly 13,000 poems and 2,000 songs, along with novels, short stories, plays and a sustained body of essays on education and nationalism. Visva Bharati, founded as an open air school in 1901 and chartered as a central university in 1951, embodies his syncretic cultural thought: arts taught under the trees, music as a daily practice, and the world community welcomed as students.

Premchand wrote in both Hindi and Urdu and is the writer who carried modern social realism into north Indian prose. Godan (The Gift of a Cow, 1936), Gaban, Nirmala, and the short stories Kafan, Idgah and Poos Ki Raat established him as the pioneer of the Hindi Urdu modern narrative. His Lamhi village is small, dusty in summer, green in October, and his presence is felt in the modest one storey house preserved by the memorial trust.

RK Narayan, with his fictional South Indian town of Malgudi, is the writer who carried Indian English fiction to a global readership through Penguin from the late 1930s onwards. Malgudi is drawn from Mysore and the surrounding Karnataka and Tamil country, and the Mysore house in Yadavagiri is where most of his late work was written.

Daryaganj's Sunday book bazaar is a continuous 200 year tradition that runs from British Raj era pavement selling through the Mughal Old Delhi cultural thread into the present. It is one of the great pavement cultures of the subcontinent, and stepping into it is stepping into a layer of Delhi older than independence.

The Jaipur Literature Festival was founded in 2008 by William Dalrymple and Namita Gokhale, with event design by Sanjoy Roy of Teamwork Arts. It has grown into what organisers describe as the world's largest free literary festival, with around 500,000 footfalls and 300 plus authors over 5 days each January.

Pre Trip Checklist

Schedule a Sunday morning in Delhi for the Daryaganj bazaar, 9am to about 1pm at Mahila Haat near Delhi Gate.
Book Bolpur accommodation by June 2026 if you want to attend Poush Mela 23 to 25 December.
Book Jaipur accommodation by July 2025 (six months prior) for the 24 to 28 January 2026 festival, expect a 3 to 5 times surge on rates at Diggi Palace area hotels.
Note photography rules: no flash inside Jorasanko Thakur Bari, no photography inside Visva Bharati museum galleries, respectful courtyard photos only at Lamhi.
Bring comfortable walking shoes for College Street Kolkata where 5,000 booksellers cluster across walkable lanes; cotton clothing for Mysore and Lamhi; layers for Shantiniketan in December evenings.

3 Day Bolpur and Shantiniketan Weekend (December, Poush Mela)

Day 1 (Friday): Howrah to Bolpur on the Shatabdi (2h 10m), check into a guesthouse near the Visva Bharati gate, evening Baul music at the Khoai haat.
