Singapore Complete Guide 2026: Marina Bay, Sentosa, Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown and Hawker Heritage
TL;DR
Singapore is the easiest big-bang Asia trip I plan for friends. It is 728 km of island city packed with Marina Bay Sands (2010), Gardens by the Bay with 18 Supertrees, Sentosa with Universal Studios (2010) and the S.E.A. Aquarium (2012), plus 100 plus hawker centres that earned UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2020. Indians get 30 days visa-free, the MRT runs on 8 lines, Changi has been Skytrax World's Best Airport 13 years in a row, and Maxwell chicken rice still costs SGD 4 to 8. I suggest 3 days for a first taste, 5 for a proper visit, 7 if you want the Zoo, Night Safari and Pulau Ubin. Best months: February to April and September to November.
Why Singapore Is Worth It in 2026
I keep coming back because the city keeps adding reasons. In 2026 Singapore is in its 61st year as an independent republic, having marked 60 years on August 9 2025. PM Lawrence Wong, the fourth PM since 1965, took office on May 15 2024 after Lee Hsien Loong stepped down following 20 years in the job.
For Indian travellers the timing is excellent. Indian passport holders get 30 days visa-free entry with an onward ticket and accommodation booking. A 96-hour visa-free transit stay is also available for many nationalities, which makes Singapore a logical stopover between India and Australia, Japan or the US west coast.
Hawker culture became UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage on December 16 2020. The 100 plus hawker centres serve roughly 800,000 meals a day, and food prices stay sane even as everything else inflates: chicken rice at Maxwell is SGD 4 to 8 while the hotel attached charges SGD 600 a night. Changi opened its Jewel mall and indoor waterfall in 2019, the Thomson East Coast MRT line keeps extending, and Singapore is now a 5G nation with about 6 million people inside one of the cleanest urban environments anywhere.
Background: From Sang Nila Utama to Lawrence Wong
The island shows up in records as Temasek, a Srivijaya-era trading post. The founding legend points to Sang Nila Utama, a Srivijayan prince who reportedly landed in 1299, saw what he believed was a lion, and named the place Singapura (Lion City in Sanskrit). The Sultanate of Johor later controlled it, but it stayed a fishing settlement until the British arrived.
Sir Stamford Raffles landed on January 29 1819, signed treaties with local Malay chiefs and set up a free port for the British East India Company. By 1826 Singapore was part of the Straits Settlements with Penang and Malacca. Migrants from southern China, Tamil Nadu and the Malay Archipelago shaped today's mix: 74 percent Chinese, 14 percent Malay, 9 percent Indian, 3 percent Eurasian and others.
World War II hit hard. The Battle of Singapore ended with the British surrender on February 15 1942, the largest capitulation in British military history. Japanese occupation ran until August 30 1945. The Sook Ching massacre between February and March 1942 killed tens of thousands of ethnic Chinese civilians. The formal Japanese surrender ceremony for Southeast Asia took place at City Hall on September 12 1945.
Self-government followed in 1959. Lee Kuan Yew became the first PM at age 35 leading the People's Action Party. Singapore joined the Federation of Malaysia on September 16 1963, but separation came on August 9 1965, making it the only modern country to gain independence against its own will. The political timeline since: Lee Kuan Yew 1959 to 1990, Goh Chok Tong 1990 to 2004, Lee Hsien Loong 2004 to 2024, Lawrence Wong from May 15 2024. GDP per capita has climbed past USD 90,000 on a 728 km island. Chewing gum was banned in 1992. Around 50 percent of residents use public transit daily.
Tier 1 Sights: The Marina Bay Set Piece
Marina Bay Sands and the SkyPark
Marina Bay Sands opened in 2010, designed by Moshe Safdie, built for around USD 8 billion. Three hotel towers each 55 floors and 200 metres tall carry a 1.2 hectare SkyPark roof. The SkyPark Observation Deck (57th floor) is open to non-guests at SGD 32; the 150 metre Infinity Pool, the world's longest raised swimming pool, is hotel-guest only at USD 400 to 1,500 a night. Spectra, the free outdoor light and water show, runs nightly at 8 PM and 9 PM with a third Friday and Saturday show, each about 13.5 minutes. I plant myself on the Event Plaza boardwalk around 7:40 PM.
Gardens by the Bay
Gardens by the Bay opened in 2012 on 101 hectares of reclaimed land east of Marina Bay Sands. The two conservatories are the Cloud Forest, with a 35 metre indoor mountain and the world's tallest indoor waterfall, and the Flower Dome, a 1.2 hectare cool dry biome with rotating floral displays. A combo ticket is SGD 53. Outside sits the Supertree Grove: 18 vertical tree-like structures 25 to 50 metres tall, built to harvest solar energy and channel ventilation for the domes. The OCBC Skyway loops 22 metres of walkway at 128 metres up, SGD 14. The Garden Rhapsody light and sound show is free at 7:45 PM and 8:45 PM, about 13.5 minutes, and pairs nicely with Spectra.
Esplanade, Merlion and ArtScience Museum
The Esplanade Theatres on the Bay opened in 2002 across about 60,000 square metres with an 1,800 seat concert hall. Its durian-shape facade carries around 7,000 aluminium sunshade spikes. The Merlion at the mouth of the Singapore River dates from 1972, 8.6 metres tall, spits water into the bay. The ArtScience Museum (2011) sits beside the casino in a 21 finger lotus shape with rotating exhibits at a steady 24 degrees inside. The Helix Bridge, 280 metres of double helix DNA pattern, joins Marina Centre to Marina Bay Sands.
Sentosa Island
Sentosa is a 5 km island linked by a bridge, the Sentosa Express monorail (opened 2007, SGD 4) and the Singapore Cable Car from Mount Faber (30 minutes, SGD 35).
Universal Studios Singapore opened in 2010 with 7 zones (Hollywood, New York, Sci-Fi City, Ancient Egypt, Lost World, Far Far Away, Madagascar) and around 30 attractions including Battlestar Galactica and Transformers. A 1-day ticket runs SGD 89 to 99, a 2-day pass SGD 158. S.E.A. Aquarium (2012) holds about 100,000 marine animals from 800 species; its Open Ocean Habitat features an 18 metre underwater viewing tunnel with manta rays and hammerhead sharks (SGD 49). Adventure Cove Waterpark (2012) has slides and a wave pool. Mega Adventure Park includes the MegaZip and iFly, a 4 minute indoor skydive simulating an 18 metre drop. Skyline Luge has 4 downhill tracks across about 1.5 km. Wings of Time at Siloso Beach runs at 7:40 PM and 8:40 PM, about 8 minutes, SGD 18.
Resorts World Sentosa (2010) houses one of Singapore's two integrated casinos. Sentosa's three beaches: Siloso (3.2 km of golden sand), Palawan (rope bridge to a southernmost-point-of-continental-Asia marker) and the quieter Tanjong.
Chinatown
Chinatown covers about 1.5 square kilometres south of the Singapore River. The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple opened in 2007 across 4 levels with what the temple counts as 5 million Buddhist artifacts and the sacred tooth in a stupa on the upper floor (free).
Maxwell Food Centre has run since the 1950s with around 100 stalls. Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice is the dish locals point to first; a plate of the unofficial national dish costs SGD 4 to 8. Smith Street now hosts open air stalls and shophouse restaurants. Sri Mariamman Temple (1827) is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, Dravidian style with a 5 tier gopuram and roughly 72 Hindu deities carved above the gate (free). The Chinatown Heritage Centre on Pagoda Street occupies 3 restored 1850s shophouses showing immigrant living conditions.
Little India
Little India runs along Serangoon Road. The Tekka Centre combines a wet market and hawker stalls. Mustafa Centre is open 24 hours across 4 floors selling gold to electronics; I have used it for emergency suitcase repairs at 2 AM. Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple was founded in 1855 on Race Course Road, dedicated to Kali.
Kampong Glam
Kampong Glam is the historic Malay quarter. Sultan Mosque was first built 1824 to 1828 and expanded in 1928 with the large onion dome you see today. Haji Lane is a narrow shophouse street of independent fashion boutiques and cafes. The Malay Heritage Centre occupies the former Istana Kampong Glam, built around 1840 as the Sultan's royal residence.
Hawker Centres and the National Plate
Hawker culture in Singapore was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list on December 16 2020. More than 100 hawker centres serve roughly 800,000 meals a day. Core dishes for first timers: Hainanese chicken rice (unofficial national dish), Hokkien mee (prawn and pork noodle stir fry), char kway teow (flat rice noodles with cockles), laksa (coconut curry noodle soup), roti prata, satay and chilli crab. Lau Pa Sat at Telok Ayer is a Victorian cast iron pavilion from 1894, on the site of the first market opened in 1838. After 7 PM Boon Tat Street alongside closes for Satay Street.
The Singapore Sling was invented in 1915 at the Long Bar of Raffles by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon. Tiger Beer was first brewed in 1932. A Sling at the Long Bar costs around SGD 35.
Singapore Botanic Gardens and Raffles Hotel
Singapore Botanic Gardens was founded in 1859 in its current form, covers 82 hectares, and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, the first and only tropical botanic garden on the list. The National Orchid Garden inside covers 1.4 hectares and displays around 60,000 orchid plants from roughly 1,000 species. Wider gardens are free, Orchid Garden SGD 5.
Raffles Hotel opened in 1887 and reopened after restoration in 2019 as a 5 star colonial palace. Joseph Conrad stayed in 1888, followed by Rudyard Kipling and W. Somerset Maugham. The formal Japanese surrender for Southeast Asia took place across the road at City Hall on September 12 1945. Tea at the Tiffin Room or a Sling at the Long Bar is the easy way to walk the lobby without a room booking.
Tier 2 Sights: Beyond the Bay
Singapore Zoo opened in 1973 on 28 hectares at Mandai with open enclosures. Night Safari opened in 1994 as the world's first nocturnal zoo. River Wonders (formerly River Safari) opened in the 1990s and early 2000s as the Asia themed river park with giant pandas and the Mekong tank. Jurong Bird Park (1971) closed in 2023 and was replaced by Bird Paradise at Mandai the same year. A 4 park combo pass beats buying separately.
Pulau Ubin is the rustic 8 square kilometre island off the northeastern coast, reached by 10 minute bumboat from Changi Point. Chek Jawa Wetlands at the eastern tip cover about 1 square kilometre of intertidal flats with six ecosystems meeting at one shoreline. Around 100 residents still live in Singapore's last surviving kampong. I hire a bicycle for SGD 8 to 15.
Chijmes is a former Catholic convent and school completed in 1854, now a courtyard of restaurants and a wedding venue around its restored chapel. St Andrew's Cathedral, the Anglican mother church from 1862, is a short walk away. Henderson Waves (2008) is a 274 metre pedestrian bridge in an undulating wave shape, 36 metres above Henderson Road, part of the Southern Ridges trail.
Costs in SGD, USD and INR
Exchange rate snapshot for May 2026: SGD 1 is about USD 0.76 and INR 64, or equivalently USD 1 buys SGD 1.32 and INR 84 buys USD 1. SGD is pegged on a floating basis against a trade weighted basket, and the Brunei dollar trades 1 to 1 with SGD inside both countries.

Planning Your Trip
Indian passport holders get 30 days visa-free, but officers check onward ticket and accommodation, so book both before you fly. A 96 hour visa-free transit applies to many other nationalities. The SG Arrival Card (free, ICA website) must be filled within 3 days of arrival; ignore third party sites charging for it.
Peak weather for sightseeing is February to April and September to November, daytime highs around 30 to 32 degrees with humidity slightly lower. June to August can bring transboundary haze from Indonesian forest fires. December is the peak rainy month with brief afternoon thunderstorms.
Changi Airport (SIN) was Skytrax World's Best Airport 13 consecutive years through 2023 and returned to the top in 2024 to 2025 in several surveys. The Jewel complex (2019) contains the 40 metre Rain Vortex indoor waterfall and is open to transit passengers. Changi serves more than 300 destinations across 100 plus airlines.
The MRT runs on 8 colour coded lines (North South, East West, North East, Circle, Downtown, Thomson East Coast, Sentosa Express and Light Rail). About 50 percent of residents use public transit daily. Tap an EZ-Link or Singapore Tourist Pass card, or a contactless Visa or Mastercard. Standard MRT fare SGD 1.50 to 3. Bus routes are dense with 24 hour services. Grab is the local ride hail.
Food is the cheapest expense outside public transit. Hawker culture has been UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2020, and a plate of chicken rice, Hokkien mee, char kway teow, laksa or roti prata costs SGD 4 to 8. Restaurants in malls add 10 percent service charge and 9 percent GST. Tap water from PUB is drinkable everywhere. Tipping is not customary.
Laws to remember: no chewing gum since 1992 (importing is fined; pharmacy-prescribed gum allowed since 2004), jaywalking SGD 50 to 500, smoking only in marked outdoor areas, littering fines scale fast.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Singapore? No. 30 days visa-free is granted on arrival with proof of onward travel and accommodation. The 96 hour visa-free transit is also available for several other nationalities. Fill the SG Arrival Card online through ICA within 3 days of arrival.
What is the easiest way to get around? The MRT covers 8 lines and reaches almost every neighbourhood. Tap an EZ-Link card or any contactless Visa or Mastercard at the gate. Fares are SGD 1.50 to 3. Taxis use the meter, flag fall SGD 4 plus around SGD 1 per km. Grab is the local ride hail app.
When is the best time to visit? February to April and September to November give the most reliable weather. June to August occasionally brings haze. December rain is heavy but brief.
Sentosa: Cable Car, Sentosa Express or walk? I prefer the Singapore Cable Car from Mount Faber for the first arrival because the 30 minute ride over the harbour is the sightseeing in itself. After that, the Sentosa Express at SGD 4 is the cheapest way around, and the Sentosa Boardwalk gives a free walk from VivoCity if you want to save the fare. Wings of Time at Siloso Beach closes most days at 8:48 PM.
What is hawker centre etiquette? Chope your table with a tissue packet placed on a seat, then go order. Carry your own tray back to the return rack when you finish. Pay at the stall, mostly cash though more stalls now take PayNow QR. Tipping is not done.
Is tap water safe? Yes, fully drinkable across the island. PUB tap water is among the cleanest in the world and is often safer than bottled.
What plug type and voltage? Type G, the same three rectangular pin plug as the UK, at 230V 50Hz. No adapter is needed for most India travellers using UK style chargers, otherwise a universal adapter handles it. ETIAS does not apply because Singapore is not in Europe.
Are the chewing gum and other fines real? Yes. Chewing gum import has been restricted since 1992. Jaywalking fines range from SGD 50 to 500, smoking outside marked areas SGD 200 first offence, and littering SGD 300 to 2,000 with community work for repeat offenders. None of this affects normal tourist behaviour.
Useful Phrases in English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil
Singapore has 4 official languages: English (working language for everyone), Mandarin (39 percent of households), Malay (national language, 14 percent) and Tamil (around 3 percent). You can use English everywhere, but a phrase in the speaker's home language is appreciated.
- Hello: Hello / Ni hao / Selamat pagi (Malay good morning) / Vanakkam (Tamil)
- Thank you: Thank you / Xie xie / Terima kasih / Nandri
- Yes / No: Yes No / Shi De Bu Shi / Ya Tidak / Aam Illai
- Please: Please / Qing / Tolong / Tayavu Seythu
- Excuse me: Excuse me / Bu hao yi si / Maaf / Mannikkavum
- How much: How much / Duo shao qian / Berapa harga / Evlavu
- Where: Where / Zai nar / Di mana / Enge
- Toilet: Toilet / Ce suo / Tandas / Kalivarai
- Water: Water / Shui / Air / Tanneer
- Delicious: Delicious / Hen hao chi / Sedap / Suvai
- Help: Help / Bang wo / Tolong saya / Udavi seyungal
- Goodbye: Bye / Zai jian / Selamat tinggal / Poyitu varugiren
- Sorry: Sorry / Dui bu qi / Maaf / Mannikavum
- I love you: I love you / Wo ai ni / Saya cinta kamu / Naan unnai kadhalikkiren
- Lah / Lor / Leh: untranslatable Singlish particles that everyone uses for emphasis
Cultural Notes
Singapore is a multiracial republic. The Constitution recognises 4 official languages and 4 main ethnic groups (Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian Others). 11 public holidays cover major faiths: Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Haji, Deepavali, Vesak Day, Good Friday, Christmas, New Year, Labour Day, and National Day on August 9.
English is the working language for business, government and schooling. Singlish, the local Creole mixing Hokkien, Malay, Tamil and Cantonese particles, is the social shorthand: "can lah" for yes, "shiok" for excellent, "makan" for eat. None of it is rude. Hawker culture is the most visible cultural institution; UNESCO inscribed it in 2020, NEA licences and inspects stalls, and tray return is expected after a 2021 rule change.
Singapore is not a place to argue with public officials or front line staff. Speak calmly, follow signs, queue properly. I share dates rather than opinions: Lee Kuan Yew led from 1959 to 1990, his successors followed without coups, and Lawrence Wong became PM on May 15 2024.
Pre-Trip Preparation
Book your return or onward flight and at least the first 2 nights of accommodation before you board, and fill the SG Arrival Card via the ICA website or app within the 3 day window before landing.
Plug type G, 230V 50Hz, same as UK. Most UK and India chargers fit; bring a universal adapter for anything else. The country is 1 degree north of the equator, so SPF 50 zinc, a wide brim hat and a small umbrella are useful year round. Daytime 28 to 32 degrees with humidity around 80 percent. Pack light cotton layers because indoor air conditioning runs at 20 to 22 degrees everywhere.
ATMs accept Visa and Mastercard; DBS and OCBC charge no extra foreign withdrawal fees. Cards work nearly everywhere except small hawker stalls, and those increasingly take PayNow QR. Buy an EZ-Link card for SGD 10 (SGD 5 fare, SGD 5 deposit) at any MRT station or tap a contactless card directly. GrabPay and PayNow are the dominant cashless apps.
