Ayodhya transformed since January 2024

Old Ayodhya was a quiet temple town. Narrow lanes. But cycle rickshaws. Maybe 50,000 pilgrims on a busy weekend. Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir consecration and visit

The mandir itself is the reason almost everyone comes. The current structure is the first phase: ground floor and main sanctum opened in January 2024, first and second floors still under construction through 2025-2026, full completion targeted for late 2026. Hanuman Garhi, the always-busy mandir

Locals will tell you to visit Hanuman Garhi before the main mandir. And they're right. The 10th-century shrine sits atop a small hill reached by a 76-step climb (roofed, with shoe storage at the base), and tradition says you should seek Hanuman's permission first before going to Ram Lalla.

Kanak Bhawan sits a five-minute walk from Hanuman Garhi and gets nowhere near the same crowds, which is a small miracle considering the place is dedicated to Sita and Ram together. Legend says Queen Kaikeyi gave it to Sita as a wedding gift. Plus the current structure dates to 1891, rebuilt by the Tikamgarh royal family. Free entry, soft afternoon light through latticed windows, three idol pairs in gold ornaments.

A short rickshaw ride away (₹50 to ₹80) is Treta Ke Thakur, the ancient temple believed to mark the spot of Ram's Ashwamedha Yagna. It opens to the public only on Ekadashi tithi each lunar month . Most days the gates are shut. Worth checking the panchang before you plan, because if your dates align it's a quieter, more atmospheric darshan than the main mandir. And the idols of Ram, Sita, Lakshman, Bharat, Shatrughan and Hanuman are carved from a single black sandstone slab and are believed to be from the era of Vikramaditya.

Saryu Ghat evening aarti

Every evening at 6 pm sharp, the priests at Naya Ghat on the Saryu river light the giant brass diyas and start the 90-minute aarti ceremony. Bhajans first, then the lamp ritual, then conch shells. The crowd settles on the wide stone steps, locals bring their own diyas in leaf bowls (₹20) to float on the water.

Budget options: Yatri Niwas at Ayodhya Cantonment runs ₹600 to ₹1,200 a room and is decent. Dharamshalas attached to akharas accept walk-ins for ₹200 to ₹500 but are basic - shared bathrooms, early curfew. Homestays on MakeMyTrip and Booking.com have multiplied through 2025; ₹1,800 to ₹3,500 gets you a clean room with breakfast in a family setup.

Food is the easy part. Sai Baba Mandir Bhajan Lodge serves bhandara prasad meals at ₹50 to ₹150. Best months and festivals

October to March is the season. Daytime highs of 18 to 28°C, cool evenings, low humidity, no rain. December and January get genuinely cold , pack a light jacket for early-morning Hanuman Garhi visits. Ram Navami (March or April depending on tithi) and Deepotsav (one or two days before Diwali, October-November) are the two peak festivals. Both are worth experiencing once if you can tolerate crowds - Deepotsav 2024 lit up 25 lakh diyas across the ghats and broke its own Guinness record.
