Tamil Nadu has the most useful weekend-trip cluster I've found anywhere in India. From Chennai you can be on a beach by 9 PM, in a hill station by sunrise, or in a Chola-era temple courtyard before lunch. From Bangalore the western edge opens up - Hogenakkal, Yelagiri, Yercaud , all within four to five hours. From Hyderabad, an overnight train delivers you to Salem or Madurai before breakfast. This is the list I wish someone had handed me my first month in the south. Real INR prices, the road numbers I drove (NH-32 to Pondicherry is the one I know best), and trips that fit a two-day window.
