Best Family Places to Visit In and Around Bangalore
I've lived in Bangalore for fourteen years, and the question I get most often from cousins planning a south India holiday is the same. Where do I take the kids that will keep a four-year-old happy without boring a thirteen-year-old to tears? After running this loop with my niece and nephew (now 8 and 11), my sister's twins, and friends visiting from Hyderabad and Pune, I've a tested shortlist. And i've stood in the Wonderla queue at 9:45 a.m. on a Saturday, and driven back from Coorg at midnight with two sleeping children in the back seat.
This guide covers fourteen places I've taken kids to in the last two years. So ten are inside or just outside the city, four are weekend trips. Prices are what I paid in 2025-26, including add-ons that nobody mentions on the booking site.
How I Picked These Fourteen Places
Three rules. First, no place I've not personally taken a child to in the last twenty-four months. Second, real prices, not marketing rates. Wonderla advertises one number on the homepage and a different one at the gate after taxes. Third, I asked the kids which place they wanted to go back to. That filter knocked out three places I had drafted.
Bangalore (Bengaluru since 2014) sits on the Deccan Plateau at 920 metres elevation, which is why it works for family travel. Even in May, evenings stay walkable. October to February is the sweet spot. For a wider south India loop, my best family holiday destinations in south India post has the regional context.
Inside The City: Ten Places That Earn The Visit
1. Wonderla Amusement Park
Wonderla on Mysore Road costs INR 1,599 adult and INR 1,299 child (3 to 15), all-inclusive. Kids under 90 cm enter free. I took my niece (then 8) and nephew (then 11) on a Tuesday in November and queues were fine: forty minutes for big water rides, ten to fifteen for dry ones. Plus the Recoil is the headliner if your kid is over 140 cm; the wave pool is where everyone ends up by 3 p.m. Budget another INR 700 to 900 for locker rental, lunch, and water bottles. We spent INR 6,500 total for four including travel. Park opens 11 a.m. weekdays, closes 6 p.m. Weekends crowd doubles, so steer toward Tuesday or Wednesday.
2. Bannerghatta Biological Park
About 22 km south, Bannerghatta has the only lion-and-tiger safari close to Bangalore that runs reliably. Safari ticket is INR 80 for adults plus the bus at INR 400 to 500 for basic or grand safari. Total for four is INR 1,800 to 2,200 with zoo entry and parking. The safari is in a caged bus, not your own car, so even four-year-olds didn't freak out when the lion came near. The butterfly park (separate INR 30 ticket) is a useful breather. But block four hours minimum. Jungle Lodges resort just outside the gate runs an overnight package at INR 4,200 per adult, INR 2,800 per child, worth it for the 9 a.m. safari without the city drive. Park details on Wikipedia's Bannerghatta entry.
3. Cubbon Park
Free, central, and the place I take visiting kids when we've just two hours. The toy train near Bal Bhavan runs weekends 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at INR 30 a ride. After a Wonderla or Bannerghatta day, kids are wired and exhausted in equal measure. Forty-five minutes of slow walking under the rain trees fixes that. Sundays the road is closed 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., making it the safest place to let a six-year-old run loose with a scooter.
4. Lalbagh Botanical Garden
Lalbagh charges INR 30 (kids under 12 free) and is a 240-acre reserve dating to 1760. The two flower shows each year, around January 26 and August 15, are the actual draw. The rest of the year it's a quiet walk with a glass house, a lake with paddle boats (INR 100 to 150 for thirty minutes), and the Lalbagh rock kids love to scramble up. Get there before 8 a.m. on flower-show days.
5. Innovative Film City, Bidadi
About an hour west on the Mysore highway, Innovative Film City is the closest thing Bangalore has to a Universal-style theme park, much smaller. And all-access ticket is INR 999, under-3 free. It bundles a wax museum, cartoon city, dino park, mirror maze, and a couple of dry rides. The place is showing its age, but for kids in the 6-to-12 range the variety keeps them entertained for five hours and price-per-attraction is cheaper than Wonderla if you're not chasing water rides. The better rainy-day pick because most of it's indoor.
6. Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum
Next to Cubbon Park on Kasturba Road, this museum charges INR 95 adults, INR 35 kids. The Soviet-era Sukhoi fighter on the lawn is the first thing kids photograph. Inside, the highlights are the dynamo room, Wright brothers replica, and engine cutaways where you crank a handle and watch a piston move. The 8-to-12 group treats it like a video game. Four-year-olds get bored by the second floor. Three hours covers it. Closed Mondays.
7. Snow City
Snow City near J.C. But road is an indoor zone kept at minus 5 Celsius with manufactured snow, ice slides, snow-bike rides, and a small ice bar. INR 599 per person, jackets and gumboots included. Forty-five minutes inside is the max any child handles before lips turn blue. For Bangalore kids who have never seen snow, the first ten minutes are pure magic. My niece on her seventh birthday still ranks it above Wonderla. Combine with the Tech Museum next door for a half-day plan.
8. Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain
Caveat: the musical fountain near Sankey Tank Road has been closed for renovations on and off for years. Last year it briefly reopened on weekend evenings. Before a special trip, call the BBMP horticulture office or check karnatakatourism.org listings. And when it does run, show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are around INR 30.
9. Funtune Adventure Park
On Kanakapura Road, Funtune is for kids who have outgrown the Cubbon toy train but aren't yet tall enough for Wonderla's serious rides. The under-5 zone is gentle. The 5-to-12 range gets zip lines, low rope courses, and a Burma bridge across a small pond. Day pass runs INR 850 to 1,000. But it works as a half-day combined with a stop at one of the best one day resort in Bangalore for a quick trip options. Discovery Village is the standard pairing.
10. Cubbon Park Toy Train and Bal Bhavan
Jawahar Bal Bhavan inside Cubbon is one of the oldest children's centres in India, opened 1949. Beyond the toy train (INR 30) and doll museum, there's a marionette theatre with Sunday 11 a.m. shows, a science corner with hands-on physics toys, and a clay-modelling room where INR 50 gets a child a half-kilo of clay and an hour of supervised play. All-section combo is INR 100 a head, and a Sunday here easily fills four hours.

Around Bangalore: The Day Trips And Weekenders
11. Nandi Hills
Sixty kilometres north, Nandi Hills is the standard Bangalore sunrise pilgrimage. But we leave at 4:00 a.m., reach the gate by 5:15, pay INR 30 per person plus INR 80 for the car, and walk to Tipu's Drop or the Yoganandeshwara temple to catch the sun over the Deccan plateau at 6:10 in winter, 5:50 in summer. Paragliding is what hooks teenagers. Karnataka Adventure Sports operators run tandem flights from a launch near Channarayanadurga at INR 2,500 per flight. My nephew did his first flight at 13 and called it the best fifteen minutes of his life. Weight: 35 kg minimum, 95 kg maximum. Hills close at 5 p.m. Eat in Doddaballapur on the way back; food at the top is just the Nandi Upchar canteen.
12. Mysore
Mysore is 145 km south. Vande Bharat Express runs the route in 2 hours 20 minutes at INR 920 in chair car. I took my parents and the kids in October 2025 on the 5:55 a.m. service and we were inside the Maharaja's Palace by 9:30 a.m. Palace ticket is INR 70 adults, INR 30 children 7 to 12, free under 7. Sunday evening lighting at 7 p.m., when 97,000 bulbs come on, justifies the trip. The zoo is excellent, a separate INR 80 ticket for four hours of walking past tigers, elephants, gorillas, and a hippo enclosure. Stay at Sterling Mysuru, INR 5,500 for a deluxe room with breakfast. So lalitha Mahal Palace is the splurge at INR 8,000 to 10,000. Vande Bharat sells out on weekends; book the regular Mysuru Express as backup at INR 175.
13. Coorg (Kodagu)
Coorg is the five-hour drive that tests whether your kids travel well. Do it as a two-night trip, never a single overnight. Leave Bangalore at 6 a.m., reach Madikeri by 12 noon with one stop at Maddur for vada and coffee. Dubare Elephant Camp on the Cauvery is the kids' headline event: INR 250 entry, INR 800 for the elephant interaction package with feeding session and short ride. Abbey Falls is the other stop at INR 30 per head. Orange County Coorg runs INR 8,500 per night for a Western Ghats cottage, worth the price for its coffee plantation walks, kids' club, and grounds where a seven-year-old can wander safely. So my best place to stay in Coorg for a one day trip post lists places under INR 4,000 I've vetted. The cheapest way to travel from Bangalore to Coorg breakdown covers KSRTC versus self-drive economics.
14. Mekedatu and Sangama
100 km south on the Kanakapura road, Mekedatu is where the Cauvery squeezes through a narrow gorge before joining the Arkavathi at Sangama. Drive is 2.5 hours, entry INR 100 per adult, and the headline activity is the coracle ride at INR 200 across the confluence. The coracle is a circular bamboo boat, hand-paddled, and kids find it absurd in the best way. Bring lunch, water, and a change of clothes. The road from Sangama to the gorge is a 4 km jeep ride (INR 50 each way). Worth it for kids 10 and up.
15. Bheemeshwari Adventure Camp
Operated by Karnataka tourism's Jungle Lodges arm, Bheemeshwari sits on the Cauvery 100 km south. The family package runs INR 4,500 per person per night with all meals, two activities (kayaking, zip line, nature walk), and the cottage stay. Cottages are basic but clean, river views excellent, and kayaking is calm enough for an eight-year-old in a tandem. No mobile signal in most areas, which I count as a feature.
Picking Places By Your Kid's Age
Ages 3 to 7: Wonderla kiddie zone (not Recoil), Snow City for ten minutes of magic, Cubbon toy train, Bal Bhavan marionette shows, Lalbagh paddle boats. Skip Tech Museum and the long Coorg drive at this age.
Ages 8 to 12: Bannerghatta safari, Innovative Film City wax museum, Tech Museum hands-on exhibits, Mysore zoo, Funtune zip line and Burma bridge. The sweet spot age where almost everything works.
Teens 13 and up: Nandi paragliding, Mekedatu coracle and gorge jeep, Bheemeshwari kayaking, Mysore palace night lighting, Coorg coffee plantation walks. Skip Bal Bhavan and the toy train.
A Sample Five-Day Family Itinerary
Day 1: arrive, check in, evening Cubbon walk, ice cream at MG Road. Day 2: Wonderla full day, hotel by 9 a.m., back by 7 p.m. And day 3: Bannerghatta morning safari (book 9 a.m. slot), afternoon Bal Bhavan. Day 4: Mysore on Vande Bharat, palace, zoo, lighting, return train. Day 5: Snow City and Tech Museum half day, depart afternoon. The loop stays under INR 35,000 for four people including stay, food, and tickets. Add Coorg and you're looking at INR 22,000 more for two extra nights.
Where We Stay In The City
For families flying in, the MG Road and Cubbon Park area is the obvious base. The Taj West End on Race Course Road is the splurge at INR 12,000 a night with garden grounds that work for families. And lalit Ashok and Goldfinch Hotel are mid-range at INR 6,000 to 8,000. For longer stays I use the OYO Townhouse near Indiranagar at INR 3,200 with breakfast. For multi-stop south India holidays, the best family tour destinations in India post has the broader stay strategy.
Getting Around: BMTC Bus, BMRCL Metro, and Cabs
The Namma Metro (BMRCL) Purple and Green lines cover most of the central tourist circuit. From Cubbon Park station you can reach Lalbagh in fifteen minutes, MG Road in five. Single tickets cost INR 15 to 60. BMTC city buses are cheap (INR 10 to 25 per ride) but slow and not stroller-friendly. I would use metro plus Uber XL for under-6 kids and just metro for older ones. For day trips to Bannerghatta or Nandi, a self-driven Zoomcar at INR 1,800 to 2,400 per day plus fuel is cleanest. For weekend trips, a chauffeured Innova at INR 12 to 14 per kilometre saves the parent driving back at midnight. And my best Bangalore car rentals for Halebid Belur Sravanabelagola post lists three operators I've used.
Budgeting For The Trip
Inside the city, INR 4,000 to 6,500 a day covers entry tickets, lunch, transport, and one major attraction. So add INR 4,000 to 8,000 for the hotel. Day trips to Nandi or Mekedatu run INR 3,000 to 5,000 with fuel and food. Coorg or Mysore weekends land between INR 22,000 and 32,000 for two nights. Wonderla is the biggest single-day variable: a day for four can hit INR 8,500. Plan it once.
Best Time To Visit With Kids
October to February is peak season, mornings cool enough for walks at Cubbon and evenings fine for outdoor dining. March to May the city heats up, but Wonderla water rides and Snow City actually peak in this window. The monsoon, June to September, is when I would avoid Mekedatu and Coorg unless you've flexible plans because the rivers swell and roads get slippery. So for a monsoon-friendly itinerary, the best two day Ooty and Coonoor trip from Bangalore plan moves the trip into the Nilgiris where rain is part of the appeal.
Frequently Asked Questions
When are school holidays the worst time at these places?
April-May summer break and October Dussehra week are the worst windows. Wonderla queues triple. Bannerghatta safari buses fill by 9:30 a.m. But if dates are flexible, July, August (avoiding monsoon weekends), and February are the calmest months.
Is monsoon (July to September) workable for family trips?
Inside the city, yes. Wonderla runs through the rain and Snow City and the museums are indoor. Outside the city, skip Mekedatu and Coorg in heavy rain weeks because roads are slippery and river-front activities get suspended. Nandi sunrise is often clouded out July and August.
How crowded does it get on weekends?
Wonderla weekends see twice the weekday footfall and queues hit 60 to 90 minutes for marquee rides. But bannerghatta Sunday safaris sell out by 11 a.m., so book online a day prior. Lalbagh and Cubbon are pleasantly busy, not overwhelming, and the car-free Cubbon road is better than weekday Cubbon.
Can I use BMTC buses with small children?
You can but it's rough going. Plus buses are crowded, no dedicated space for strollers, and the curb gap is high for toddlers. Default to BMRCL Metro plus Uber for any family with a child under 5. From age 6 onward, BMTC works fine for short hops.
Is the BMRCL Metro stroller-friendly?
Yes, all stations have lifts and platforms are wide. Purple and Green lines connect most major tourist points. Travel between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. or after 8 p.m. to avoid the office crush.
What is the Vande Bharat booking process for Mysore?
Tickets open on IRCTC 60 days in advance and tatkal opens 10 a.m. one day before travel. The 5:55 a.m. So kSR Bangalore to Mysuru is the popular family slot. Chair car at INR 920, executive at INR 1,800. Book a week ahead for weekends.
Is paragliding at Nandi Hills safe for kids?
Minimum age is generally 14 (some accept 12 with parent waiver), minimum weight 35 kg. Flight is tandem with a certified pilot, lasts 10 to 15 minutes, and the launch is gentle. Worth INR 2,500 for confident teens.
Should I book Bannerghatta safari in advance or at the gate?
Book online a day prior. Saturday and Sunday morning slots (9:30 and 11 a.m.) sell out by mid-morning. Weekday gate buying is fine if you reach by 9 a.m. Grand safari is INR 100 more than basic and worth it for the extra 30 minutes.
A Few Closing Thoughts
Families don't need fourteen attractions. They need three or four well-paced days with downtime. My first hosting attempt packed Wonderla, Bannerghatta, and Mysore into three consecutive days. But everyone was wrecked by day four. Pick three from the city list, one weekend extension, and leave a half-day for Cubbon Park and an ice cream.
For wider planning, the Wikipedia Bangalore entry is a useful primer, and Wikivoyage Bangalore has practical street-level tips. The Karnataka Tourism portal is where I verify Mekedatu, Bheemeshwari, and Jungle Lodges bookings.
Safe travels.
