Best Hill Stations to Visit in Tamil Nadu and Kerala

I've been driving up and down the Western Ghats for nearly fifteen years, and the stretch between Tamil Nadu and Kerala has my attention more than any other corner of India. The two states share a mountain spine, but the hill towns feel completely different. Tamil Nadu's leans into colonial-era English town flavour with boating lakes and convent schools. Plus kerala's leans into tea estates and plantation bungalows. I pair one from each state on a single trip - that's what this guide is built around. Numbers below are INR rates I paid or saw on receipts between November 2025 and February 2026.

1. Ooty (Udhagamandalam), Tamil Nadu

Ooty is the most familiar name on this list, and for good reason. It sits at 2,240 m in the Nilgiris and stays cool round the year. From Bangalore the drive is 290 km and takes about 6 hours through Mysuru and Bandipur. From Coimbatore the climb is shorter , 90 km and 3 hours.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the main draw. The toy train runs Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Ooty and the steam haul up to Coonoor is a UNESCO heritage section. I paid INR 215 for Second Class and INR 545 for First Class on the morning service. Book six to eight weeks ahead through IRCTC because the tourist windows fill almost instantly during summer holidays.

Doddabetta Peak at 2,637 m is the highest point in the Nilgiris. The viewpoint has a small telescope house, and on a clear morning before 9 am you can see across to the plains of Coimbatore. Pykara Lake, 19 km from town, has boating in pedal and motorboats , INR 200 to INR 700. The Government Botanical Garden costs INR 50 and is worth a morning walk in May during the flower show.

Sterling Ooty Elk Hill runs INR 5,500 to INR 9,000 in shoulder season; YWCA Anandagiri stays my budget pick at INR 2,200. From Bangalore, my two-day Ooty and Coonoor itinerary from Bangalore walks through the exact route I take.

2. Coonoor, Tamil Nadu

Coonoor is what Ooty used to be twenty years ago - slower, leafier, with tea gardens you can walk into. It sits at 1,850 m, about 19 km below Ooty on the Nilgiri Railway line. I spend more nights here than in Ooty proper now.

Sim's Park is the centre of town, INR 30 entry, with around 1,000 plant species across 12 hectares. Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose are the viewpoints I send everyone to , Dolphin's Nose looks down into the Catherine Falls gorge. Highfield Tea Estate runs a factory tour and tasting for INR 100 that explains orthodox versus CTC processing.

Hayfield Resort costs INR 5,500 with a tea-estate-facing balcony and breakfast. Acres Wild, run by a cheesemaker, is INR 6,500 and you get to watch farmstead cheddar being made. La Belle Vie has rooms from INR 4,200. Coonoor pairs well with a day in Ooty , train up in the morning, see Ooty till 4 pm, descend for the evening light.

3. Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu

Kodai is the quieter sister of Ooty, perched at 2,130 m in the Palani range. Plus from Madurai it's 120 km and a 3-hour climb. From Bangalore I fly into Madurai and rent from there , the direct drive through Dindigul is a 460 km haul.

Coaker's Walk is a 1-km cliff-edge promenade laid out in 1872 by Lt. Coaker. INR 30 fee. Be there for sunrise, not the crowded sunset slot. Pillar Rocks , three vertical granite columns about 7 km from town - disappears into mist by 11 am, so go early. Bryant Park next to the lake costs INR 30 and runs a horticultural show every May.

The lake is star-shaped and has cycle rentals at INR 100 an hour. Berijam Lake, 22 km out, needs a forest-department permit (INR 100 per head plus vehicle charges) and only allows limited vehicles a day - apply at the District Forest Office on the morning of your visit.

Carlton Hotel Kodaikanal runs INR 6,500 standard and INR 11,000 for a lake-facing suite. Plus the Tamara Kodai is a converted convent, INR 14,000 , worth it once for the architecture. 4. Yercaud, Tamil Nadu

Yercaud is what I recommend to people who have already done Ooty and Kodai. It sits at 1,515 m on the Shevaroy Hills above Salem. From Bangalore it's 220 km and 4 hours via Hosur, with 20 hairpin bends in the last 28 km.

The town wraps around Yercaud Lake. Boating costs INR 100 for a 30-minute pedal boat. But lady's Seat and Gent's Seat overlook the plains; Pagoda Point has a small Shiva shrine and the best sunset view I've seen in this region. Killiyur Falls drops 100 m and is a 1.5-km walk from the road - skip it after heavy rain.

Yercaud is coffee country, not tea. Skandashramam Estate runs a INR 200 walk with tasting. The town is small enough to cover in a day and a half . A 2-night escape, not a long base.

Sterling Yercaud rooms run INR 4,500 to INR 6,500. Grange Resort, a colonial bungalow restoration, charges INR 3,800. GRT Boutique Yercaud is the newer option at INR 5,200. Most hotels fall in the INR 1,800 to INR 3,500 band , the value pick of the five Tamil Nadu hill stations.

5. Yelagiri, Tamil Nadu

Yelagiri is for anyone in Chennai or Bangalore with a Friday evening free. Plus it's 230 km from Chennai (4 hours) and 160 km from Bangalore (3 hours) . The easiest weekend hill in the south. The plateau at 1,410 m holds 14 villages, which gives it a more rural feel than the others.

Punganoor Lake in the centre has boating and a small park. Jalagamparai Falls, 8 km out, runs strong from October to January. Swamimalai Hill behind the town is a 4-km hike on a well-marked trail. The Nature Park has a small zoo and children's play area for INR 30.

Paragliding runs December to February - INR 3,500 for a 15-minute tandem with a Tamil Nadu Adventure Tourism operator. I tried it last January; the ridge gives 8 minutes of valley airtime before the landing field.

Sterling Yelagiri runs INR 4,200. And lakeforest Wellness Resort is the upmarket option at INR 7,500. For a weekend, I rarely spend more than INR 12,000 total per person - which is why I keep coming back.

6. Munnar, Kerala

Munnar sits at 1,600 m in Idukki, surrounded by tea estates the British carved out in the 1880s. From Cochin (Kochi) it's 130 km and 4 hours. From Madurai it's 160 km - my preferred route, climbing through the Theni hills and crossing into Kerala at Bodi-Munnar via Top Station.

Anamudi at 2,695 m is the highest peak in South India, inside Eravikulam National Park. And summit treks need special permission and are rarely granted, but the park opens daily except during calving season (usually Feb-Mar). Entry INR 200 plus INR 50 for the shuttle from Vaguvarai gate. It's the last refuge of the Nilgiri tahr . I've seen herds of 20 to 30 grazing within 10 m of the path.

The Kannan Devan Hills Tata Tea Museum at Nallathanni costs INR 175 and walks you through 130 years of plantation history. Kundala Lake, Echo Point, Mattupetty Dam and Top Station make a logical day-loop. Top Station at 1,700 m looks across into Tamil Nadu's Kurinji hills, where the Neelakurinji bloom every 12 years (last in 2018).

Spice Tree Munnar at Chinnakanal charges INR 12,000 with valley-facing villas. Sterling Munnar runs INR 4,500 to INR 9,500. Tea Country by KTDC is the public-sector option at INR 4,800 with an unbeatable location. The Tall Trees Munnar, inside a 66-acre cardamom estate, sits at INR 9,200 and is where I send honeymooners. For a state-wide sweep, my 7-day Kerala itinerary builds Munnar into the middle leg.

7. Wayanad, Kerala

Wayanad is a district, not a single town, so the experience depends on your base. Kalpetta is the district headquarters and most central. From Bangalore it's 280 km (6 hours). From Calicut just 85 km and a 2.5-hour climb.

Edakkal Caves are the headline - two rock shelters at 1,200 m with petroglyphs dated 6,000 BCE to 1,000 BCE. INR 50 entry, plus a stiff 1.5-km uphill walk. Plus go before 11 am.

Kuruva Island is a 950-acre river delta on the Kabini, open October to May (closed during the southwest monsoon). INR 80 entry includes the bamboo raft crossing. Banasura Sagar Dam is India's largest earth dam , speedboat rides INR 200. Tholpetty and Muthanga sanctuaries run jeep safaris at INR 350 plus INR 100 camera fee; elephants, gaur and the occasional leopard are common.

Vythiri Resort costs INR 11,500 and treehouse rooms book months ahead. Banasura Hill Resort is INR 9,800 in full mud architecture. And wayanad Wild by CGH Earth is the mid-range pick at INR 8,500 with meals. Pepper Trail is the budget option at INR 3,200.

I would not visit Wayanad in July or August. Leeches make forest paths miserable and several lookouts close for landslide risk. Pick September through May instead , see my best month to visit Kerala season guide.

8. Vagamon, Kerala

Vagamon is what I recommend when people want something quieter than Munnar but still in Idukki. It sits at 1,100 m, lower than the others, with rolling green meadows that look more like Scotland than South India. From Kottayam it's 65 km and 2 hours; from Cochin, 100 km and 3 hours.

The Pine Forest, planted by the British in the 1940s, is a free walk-through plantation. Murugan Mala, Thangal Para and Kurisumala form a three-religion trail . Hindu, Muslim and Christian sites within 2 km of each other. And the meadows themselves are open grazing land where you can wander without permits.

Paragliding from Vagamon Hills runs November to early March. A tandem costs INR 3,500 for 10 to 12 minutes and you land in a meadow 4 km from launch. Vagamon Adventure Park has zip-lining and rappelling for INR 1,500 to INR 2,500.

Vagamon is undeveloped compared to Munnar, which is part of the appeal. Vagamon Heights runs INR 6,200. KTDC Vagamon is INR 3,800. Mountain Walk Resort with valley-edge cottages is INR 7,500.

9. Thekkady (Periyar), Kerala

Thekkady is the town next to Periyar Tiger Reserve, and the experience revolves around the 925-sq-km wildlife reserve at 900 m. From Madurai 140 km (3.5 hours); from Cochin 190 km (4.5 hours).

The signature activity is the KFDC boat ride on Periyar Lake - 90 minutes, INR 300 upper deck and INR 225 lower deck. The first boat at 7:30 am gives the best chance of elephants drinking at the shore. Tickets are issued only on the day, so reach by 6:30 am.

Bamboo rafting is the better experience for a full day - INR 2,000 for a guided 8-hour walk-and-raft inside the protected zone, limited to 24 permits a day. The Tiger Trail (one and two-night forest walks) runs INR 5,000 to INR 9,500, led by reformed poachers now employed as guides. Plus spice plantation walks are INR 350. The Mudra Cultural Centre runs Kathakali and Kalaripayattu at 6 pm and 7 pm for INR 250.

Spice Village by CGH Earth charges INR 11,000 with full board. And cardamom County is INR 6,800. Greenwoods Resort runs INR 4,500.

10. Ponmudi, Kerala

Ponmudi sits at 1,100 m, 55 km from Trivandrum, deep in the Agasthyamala biosphere. This is the least-developed hill station on the list. The road has 22 hairpin bends in the last 6 km and there are no large hotels at the top.

KTDC runs the only major property - Golden Peak at INR 4,200 with cottage rooms. Outside that, a handful of homestays charge INR 1,500 to INR 2,500. The viewpoints - Sunset Point and the old British meteorological station , give clean views into the Agasthyakoodam range. The Deer Park has spotted deer in a fenced enclosure (INR 30). The Kallar river at the base of the climb is good for shallow swimming.

Ponmudi suits travellers who want quiet without the resort polish of Munnar or Wayanad. I would block 1 night here on a Trivandrum-based itinerary, paired with Varkala two days later.

11. Vythiri, Wayanad (Resort Cluster), Kerala

Vythiri functions as a resort cluster within Wayanad rather than a hill town. The micro-climate is wetter than the rest of Wayanad , 4,000 mm annual rainfall - which gives the area its rainforest cover.

Vythiri Resort itself charges INR 11,500 for the standard pool villa and INR 22,000 for tree-houses. For a long weekend with no sightseeing agenda, this is the cluster I recommend - stay in, walk the estate, eat the plantation lunch.

Pookode Lake, shaped like the map of India, is 5 km away. Boating INR 75. Soochipara Falls is 25 km from Vythiri, drops 200 m in three tiers, INR 50 entry.

12. Practical Notes for Both States

A few things I've learned the hard way. School holidays in both states run mid-April to early June. Hotel rates can double, and the ghat sections to Ooty and Kodai develop 4-hour traffic queues. If you can travel mid-September to mid-December or mid-January to mid-March, do that.

Combos: Bangalore-Coorg-Ooty is a 5-day loop. Cochin-Munnar-Thekkady-Madurai is a 6-day TN+KL run. Calicut-Wayanad-Coorg pairs the wettest and driest Ghats in 4 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How early should I book the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and which class is worth it?
Six to eight weeks ahead through IRCTC, particularly for the steam haul up to Coonoor. I prefer Second Class at INR 215 , the open windows give a better feel for the scenery. First Class at INR 545 has reserved seating but slightly less air. The descent service is easier as a tatkal booking.

2. Do I really need a permit for Eravikulam National Park?
Yes . Entry is regulated and timed. The park reopens after the calving closure (usually Feb-Mar). Online tickets release through the Kerala Forest portal a few days before each open day. INR 200 adult plus INR 50 shuttle from the Vaguvarai gate. Walk-in tickets are limited; arrive by 7 am if you haven't booked.

3. How bad are leeches during monsoon in Wayanad and Munnar?
Bad enough that I don't walk forest trails between mid-June and early September. Ankle-high leech socks (INR 250 from Kalpetta market) help, plus salt or tobacco paste on your boots. The leech-free season runs October to May. Roads stay fine; walking gets unpleasant.

4. When do school holidays affect prices the most?
Mid-April to early June for both states, plus Diwali week and Christmas-New Year. Hotel rates can rise 60 to 80 percent. Mid-September to mid-October and mid-January to mid-March give the best weather-to-price ratio.

5. Is the food vegetarian-friendly across these hill stations?
Both states are excellent for vegetarians. Tamil Nadu has pure-veg restaurants in every market . Sree Aryaas in Ooty and Hotel Astoria in Kodai are reliable. Kerala leans towards mixed menus, but you'll find sadhya (banana leaf thali) in any town for INR 150 to INR 250. Jain food is harder to find outside main towns , call ahead if needed.

6. Are there AC trains to the gateway cities?
Yes. For Ooty/Coonoor, the West Coast Express and Bangalore-Coimbatore Intercity reach Coimbatore Junction. For Munnar, train to Ernakulam Junction. For Kodai, Madurai. For Wayanad, Calicut. AC 3-tier from Bangalore to Coimbatore is about INR 825; sleeper INR 290. Rail-then-road beats driving the full distance during summer crowds.

7. Can I do Munnar and Ooty on the same trip without doubling back?
Yes. Drive Cochin to Munnar (4 hours), 2 nights, then Munnar-Pollachi-Coimbatore-Coonoor-Ooty in a single day (about 7 hours with stops). Routes through the Anamalai Hills with a Pollachi lunch break. Reverse it if you start from Bangalore.

8. What is the safest way to handle ghat-road driving for first-timers?
Use a local driver. Self-drives like Zoomcar are fine on highways, but the 36 hairpins on Ooty's Kallar-Coonoor stretch and 14 on Kodai's Dindigul road need confidence with engine braking. Drivers cost INR 1,500 to INR 2,000 a day. Avoid these roads after sunset.

These hill stations aren't interchangeable. Plus ooty has everything close by. Coonoor and Vagamon are the quiet ones. Wayanad and Thekkady put wildlife at the centre. Yercaud and Yelagiri are budget weekend picks. Munnar is the photogenic compromise. Pick based on what you want from the trip.
