I came back to Udaipur in February 2026 to look at the Taj Lake Palace ballroom for a client and I left thinking the same thing I have thought since 2022. There is no other country on earth where you can rent a palace built in 1746, hire 400 musicians, feed 1,200 guests on hand made marigold mandaps and still spend less than a comparable wedding in Tuscany. The Big Fat Indian Wedding format gives you 3 to 7 days of programming. Day one is usually a welcome dinner. Then Mehndi with henna artists at sunrise. Haldi with turmeric paste in the courtyard. Sangeet with a 90 minute Bollywood dance set. The Pheras themselves, the seven sacred Saath Phere steps around the fire, usually take the third or fourth morning. Vivek Oberoi got married in 2010, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in 2012, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma in 2017 at Borgo Finocchieto, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh in 2018 at Lake Como, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur in December 2018, Isha Ambani in Udaipur in 2018 for a reported USD 100 million plus, and the Anant Ambani plus Radhika Merchant wedding in 2024 that crossed USD 600 million across multiple cities, the costliest private wedding in recorded history. After each of those events, my inbox filled with brides asking for the same backdrops.

Udaipur, Rajasthan

Udaipur is the royal heritage wedding capital of India and I send roughly half my Rajasthan clients here. The Taj Lake Palace was built in 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II as a summer pleasure palace on a four acre island in Lake Pichola. It opened as a hotel in 1963 and runs 83 rooms today. Jai Mahal Palace dates to 1745 and is also a Taj heritage property with 100 rooms across 18 acres of Mughal gardens. Samode Palace, an hour outside the city, was built in 1487 and runs 43 suites. Suryagarh Palace in Jaisalmer pairs well as a second venue. Heritage wedding packages in Jaipur sit at USD 150K to 800K plus.

Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Jodhpur is the Blue City, with the Mehrangarh Fort founded by Rao Jodha in 1459 sitting 122 m above the plain on a sandstone outcrop. The fort itself rents for cocktails and Pheras at premium rates. The real prize is Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1944 by Maharaja Umaid Singh in an Edward Lutyens influenced art deco style with 347 rooms, ranked as the world's largest private residence after Buckingham Palace. Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar is the Maharashtra hill station three hours from Pune, sitting at 1,353 m elevation. The Wai to Mahabaleshwar corridor has eight boutique wedding resorts. Packages run USD 50K to 300K plus and the monsoon greenery from October onward suits outdoor mandaps.

Mussoorie

Mussoorie sits at 1,880 m in Uttarakhand and the British established it as a hill station in 1827. Heritage properties along Mall Road accommodate 100 to 250 guest weddings at USD 50K to 300K plus. The Savoy Hotel, opened in 1902, runs the period ballroom.

The Indian destination wedding industry hit USD 50 billion plus in 2024. With 1 million plus weddings a year and 1,500 plus heritage hotels operating wedding venues, India sits as the second largest wedding market in the world after the United States.

Planning

I always tell clients November through March is the only real wedding season in India. Daytime sits at 10 to 25°C across most of the country and humidity drops. Peak demand is the November to February window inside that band. April and May are warm shoulder dates with 35°C plus afternoons. Monsoon from July to September is unworkable for outdoor mandaps. Summer at 45°C plus across the north from April to June is also not viable. Lock Royal Heritage venues 12 to 18 months out and 5 star Mumbai, Goa and Kerala properties at 6 to 12 months.

For visa logistics, India runs an e-visa program at USD 25 for a 60 day stay for citizens of more than 160 countries. Indian nationals living abroad use OCI or PIO cards. Foreign wedding guests should apply for the standard e-Tourist visa rather than the e-Business visa. Family Wedding Tourism is a recognized purpose of travel and customs lets in personal jewelry up to declared limits.

Flights run through Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet for domestic legs. International hubs are Delhi DEL, Mumbai BOM and Bangalore BLR, with Bangalore now overtaking Mumbai on international transfer volume. 5 star hotels include airport pickup in the wedding package as standard. Lock the hotel block at the same time you sign the venue contract.

Internal transport across the Royal Heritage Rajasthan circuit uses domestic flights between Udaipur UDR, Jaipur JAI and Jodhpur JDH. Goa flies in through GOI, Kochi through COK and Mumbai through BOM. The new Vande Bharat semi high speed trains connect Mumbai to Ahmedabad and Delhi to Varanasi for guest movement. Private luxury cars run USD 80 to 150 per day. Helicopter charters for Royal Wedding cross venue events run USD 2,500 to 5,000 per hour, mostly used for Mumbai to Udaipur transfers and Goa coastal sweeps.

Climate is continental in the north and tropical in the south. Summer hits 45°C plus from April to June across Rajasthan and the north plains. Monsoon runs July to September. Winter October to March is the only sensible wedding window. Smog blankets Delhi from November to January and I steer clients away from the capital during those months.
