Mumbai runs a different style of Diwali. The Queen's Necklace, the curve of Marine Drive from Nariman Point to Chowpatty, is lit end to end on Lakshmi Puja night with the city skyline reflecting in the Arabian Sea. Bandra West runs its own street decoration competition, with Catholic and Hindu neighbourhoods lighting up adjacent streets.

The unique Mumbai feature is the Diwali boat parties. Private operators run sunset to midnight cruises from the Gateway of India past Marine Drive and back, at 4,500 to 12,000 INR per head including dinner. Diwali in Karnataka has regional flavour: first day is Neeru Tumbuvudu, second is Naraka Chaturdashi with a pre dawn oil bath ritual, and third is Lakshmi Puja. 9. Kolkata, West Bengal: Kali Puja, The Bengali Diwali

Bengal celebrates Diwali night as Kali Puja, the worship of Goddess Kali rather than Lakshmi. The Kalighat Temple in south Kolkata and the Dakshineswar Kali Temple on the Hooghly river run all night puja programmes from sunset on Karthik Amavasya.
